Henry Rollins thought he had it rough when, on Black Flag’s 1984 album Slip It In, he sang about “drinking black coffee, black coffee, drinking black coffee, staring at the wall.” But, hey, at least he got coffee.
That’s more than Jane, the protagonist of The Yellow Wallpaper, has.
Played by Alexandra Loreth (who also co-wrote the script with director K Pontuti), Jane is a woman in America during the 1800s, which means she’s basically a second-class citizen. She has, however, fulfilled her sole purpose in life, at least according to the patriarchal attitudes of the time: she’s given birth to a child.
Now, as a treatment for postpartum depression (once believed to be a byproduct of “female hysteria”), Jane is taken to a remote country manor to “rest.” In other words, she’s confined to a small bedroom with bars on the windows and furniture nailed to the floor.

We got a little breather from Elias on Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 1 Episode 4, but that doesn't mean we got relief from violence and bloodshed.
As the Bau seeks answers about who Sicarius is and how to stop him, they're eager to link cases with any similarities.
Unfortunately, there is no shortage of troubled minds out there just waiting to inflict pain on others.
It's always boggled my mind that so much violence is rooted in similar trauma.
Gale and Jude were victims of a horrible crime when they were younger, and the only way they knew to address it was to inflict similar pain on others.
I've not spent any time understanding the whys behind that behavior, as it's so foreign to me that I prefer to live in a bubble where it doesn't exist.
But the Criminal Minds universe has always pulled from actual criminal theories, and the fact...

I confess: I had a really, really hard time deciding what grade to give Grimm Season 6 Episode 8 because I was just too busy laughing my head off.
It was just so difficult to take "The Son Also Rises" with any amount of seriousness, particularly as a person with a degree in English and a modicum of scientific understanding.
In one of the most blatant riffs on Mary Shelley's Frankenstein I have ever seen, Grimm had pretty much everything except for villagers wielding torches and pitchforks!
The whole thing was started by the un-subtley named Victor Shelley got into a car accident with his son, killing (not mostly killing, or nearly killing, but actually killing!) said son.
In a feat of astonishing scientific brilliance (otherwise known as magic), Dr. Shelley and his colleagues actually managed to resurrect the son! They literally brought him back from the dead!

It seems unlikely there is anything in the apothecary that can fix this one.
NBC announced today Grimm Season 6 would be its last.
This is hardly unexpected news, even if it is not the news any Grimm fans want to hear.
While it's been said that tightening up a season of a genre show can give it more focus and leaves less room for filler episodes that sometimes wander aimlessly throughout a season, Grimm has never really been a great offender in that area.
In recent seasons, their storylines have been well focused and even cases of the week seemed to tie into the overall arcs.
That's why the news came as a bit of a shock that Grimm Season 6 was not only being held for a January premiere but would only consist of 13 episodes.
But once the shock of that wore off, the reality set in. Grimm could be coming to an end.

When Grimm returns for its sixth season this fall, adversaries Nick and Captain Mayor Renard will take a page from the bros at Entourage and engage in a healing, “five-minute hug,” star Sasha Roiz predicts. (Sure, and if you believe that, we’ve got a Bauerschwein we’d like to sell ya.)

Grimm concludes season 5 with a two-part finale that kept the dramatic tension high throughout...
This review contains spoilers.
5.21 & 5.22 The Beginning Of The End
This season of Grimm has had its ups and downs, it’s fair to say. For the most part its now-established formula of fairy-tale creatures, romance, action and modern-day heroes and villains has continued to excite fans – but there have also been a few issues with pacing, gaps in storytelling and questionable plot twists.
The show’s two-hour season five finale, however, went above and beyond what we’ve seen this season. Despite its extended length, the episode crammed an awful lot in, yet remained fast paced, keeping the dramatic tension high at all times.
What really comes across is that Black Claw’s grip on society now seems unbreakable. The group’s plans to methodically infiltrate every aspect of government, police and other agencies is paying off,...

After treading water for weeks, Grimm is finally building up to the big end-of-season clash due in the approaching two-part finale...
This review contains spoilers.
5.20 Bad Night
As we crash inevitably onwards to next week’s two-hour season finale, Bad Night tries valiantly to inject some tension into the proceedings. And to some extent it works, with most of the episode focusing on Nick’s transformation from mild-mannered detective to a man consumed by a need for revenge against those who have taken his family.
It’s understandable, of course, that he’s feeling vexed after Black Claw forced Adalind to up and leave with their child, all so newbie politician Renard can benefit from a camera-friendly instant family. (There’s clearly more to it than that though, right?)
The writers are obviously attempting to portray a new darker side to Nick; a man driven by revenge...

Grimm finally focuses on the imminent threat represented by Black Claw in its latest episode...
This review contains spoilers.
5.19 Taming Of The Wu
After a few weeks of careful manoeuvring around some of the show’s key storylines, Taming Of The Wu finally throws that caution to the wind as our heroes find themselves increasingly shrouded in danger.
Forgoing the regular Wesen of the Week procedural, the show this week at last focuses on the imminent threat from Black Claw, with some of our favourite characters unaware of how much jeopardy they’re in.
Thankfully though we saw the welcome return of Hadrian’s Wall (Hw) warriors Meisner and Trubel, who have been Mia for the past few weeks – presumably taking the fight to all four corners of the earth in their mission to track down and destroy the bad guys.
It’s good to have them back.

This review contains spoilers.
5.18 Good To The Bone
With only a few more episodes left this season, Grimm is leaving it a little late to start ramping up the suspense. While this week we have another Wesen of the Week that occupies Nick for most of the episode, elsewhere the main story arcs of the season are neglected or unfold at a snail’s pace.
Don’t get the wrong, the episode was fine. It just feels like we deserve a bit more than something we’ve seen countless times already this season – particularly with only five episodes remaining.
We’re led to believe that Black Claw wants to infiltrate the Us government, and believes starting with Renard’s mayoral appointment is a good start.

Grimm needs to start picking up the pace as its fifth season nears its final sprint to the finish line...
This review contains spoilers.
5.17 Inugami
There was somewhat of a canine theme to this week’s Grimm instalment, what with a ghost dog Wesen and the continuing transformation of Sergeant Wu into Were-Wu.
This week’s Wesen crime was centred around vengeance, and once again, long-held traditions being at odds with the modern world. The case involving the Samurai-like Inugami was interesting because it examines particular cultural beliefs based on loyalty and protection, and an ancient killing ritual instead of the usual ‘rip and tear’ method of many an angry Wesen.
It was a solid plot that ran alongside the season’s ongoing story arcs that continue their slow trajectory.

Grimm season 5 takes on the world of evangelical preaching in its latest comic-tinged episode...
This review contains spoilers.
5.16 The Believer
First off, some good news for fans of Grimm: NBC has revealed that the show will be returning for a sixth season later this year, yay! It’s good to see the network supporting our favourite fairytale police procedural.
This week’s encounter with the Wesen world features an evangelical preacher who channels his inner Furis Rubian for his own ends. An accidental death leads Hank and Nick to the preacher’s door, and predictably we encounter large doses of religious fervour, delusion, betrayal and greed.
Being forced to deal with religious nut-jobs seems to bring out the snark in our favourite detectives, with Wu in particular delivering new levels of sarcasm when confronted with the case.
“What is this, some type of circus?” asks Hank...

5.15 Skin Deep
So beauty’s just skin-deep? Age is just a number? Yeah, right. This week we were treated to the creepy, Wesen version of Extreme Makeover, where those obsessed with youth and beauty will seemingly pay any price to maintain their looks.
Here, a local photographer scouts young, beautiful and naive victims at the local mall, showering them in flattery and promises of a successful modelling career. Fittingly, his true form shows him to be a Predator-like Wesen that uses its oversized mandibles to pierce the face of its victims and suck the youth out of them.

5.14 Lycanthropia
It was a bit of a mixed bag from the Grimm team this week, with a new case to solve, some ongoing storylines bubbling away in the background and a potentially interesting new development for one of our favourite characters.
The main plot draws upon The Hound Of Baskervilles – from where this week’s opening quote is also taken. While not werewolves as such, Lycanthropia is a Wesen-specific disease that turns Blutbaden into savage killers every time there’s a full moon. It’s down to Nick and the gang to investigate the killing of two campers in the woods and all noses point to it being the work of such a creature.
It was an interesting variation on the usual Wesen bad guy theme,...

Grimm takes a detour from recent revelations to turn in a wrestling-themed episode...
This review contains spoilers.
5.13 Silence Of The Slams
After the build-up to Grimm’s 100th episode last week, the show’s writers apparently felt the need to put a chokehold on some of the heavyweight storylines we’ve been treated to recently, and instead fall back on a regular Wesen-of-the-Week case.
It’s a shame the show is pulling its punches at this stage in the season when there’s so much going on, least of all a global Wesen uprising and the discovery of an ancient artefact that can heal the sick and dying. But no, let’s create an episode centred on the Portland wrestling scene!
Hands up; I love wrestling so seeing the two worlds collide did provide a little excitement this week. Sadly though, the plot wasn’t anything we...

This week Grimm hit its much talked-about 100th episode, and in the main, it didn’t disappoint.
Show creators Jim Kouf and David Greenwalt had previously teased a big reveal to the four-and-a half-season-long storyline involving those damn keys, but they were still in no hurry to reveal their secrets.

5.10 Map Of The Seven Knights
Road trip!
Yes it looks like the Grimm gang is finally off on a European adventure after they discover a series of mysterious links back to the old country.
Well, the links are actually the long-forgotten keys from season one, now that the writers seem to have remembered they exist. They were part of an important thread at the time, so we should be grateful that the story is being picked up again, even if it’s all still quite fuzzy at the moment. Essentially, they're a set of keys that produce a map to a place where something – no-one knows what – is buried. But let’s assume whatever it is, is really important.

Grimm ratchets up the horror in this week's season 5 episode, with some distressing scenes of torture...

5.9 Star Crossed
Grimm’s fifth season continued its descent into darker territory this week.
Alongside a behind-the-scenes glimpse into how Hadrian’s Wall operates, a Wesen storyline that fits well into the show’s main story arc and a potential jab at modern politics, we were also witness to some previously unseen levels of horror.
We are given a glimpse of how Meisner, Trubel and Eve have been working as a team to counter the threat of Black Claw. They each bring something different to the fight – whether that’s martial arts prowess, combat skills or mad telekinesis combined with a disconcerting lack of empathy – they get the job done. With its bunker HQ and latest surveillance technology it almost feels like a Hadrian’s Wall spin-off...

Last week Grimm returned with a bang.
This week, A Reptile Dysfunction (yep, comedy gold there) finds us back on more familiar ground, with the writers deciding they don’t want to jump wholeheartedly into the show’s biggest storyline to date just yet.
So while more information about Black Claw’s monstrous activities comes to light, the show clutches onto the comfort blanket that is a Wesen-of-the-Week story, which while mildly entertaining, served as little more than a distraction from the darker and much more interesting events that are unfolding from the Wesen Uprising.
This week involves a river monster called a Wasser Zahne that is hired by a couple of Luisant-Pêcheur (otter-like creatures acting out of character here) to exploit an old Loch Ness Monster-style myth in order to drum up business for their lakeside business. This inevitably goes wrong,...
