Canada’s got Drake, Justin Bieber, Carly Rae Jepsen, and now it’s “Got Talent,” too.
The global Fremantle format makes its triumphant return after 10 years off air, heading to Rogers Sports & Media-backed channel Citytv for a local adaptation of Simon Cowell’s hit talent show. “Canada’s Got Talent” enjoyed just a single season on Citytv back in 2012, with judges including actor Martin Short, opera singer Measha Brueggergosman and musician Stephan Moccio.
The format will make its comeback in partnership with Fremantle and McGillivray Entertainment Media Inc., who are on board as producers. Production will kick off this fall, with a premiere set for spring 2022. Citytv has signed on for a nine-episode run.
Cowell has judged on “Britain’s Got Talent” and “America’s Got Talent” for several years, and Variety understands he will have some on-screen involvement in the Canadian edition as well. The executive, who broke his back last year,...

“Hell’s Kitchen” is back on home base on Fox after skipping a week due to the World Series. Just to jog your memory, the previous episode had a whole lotta shaking-up going on as Chef Gordon Ramsay decided to deep-six the Rookies vs. Veterans premise of Season 18 after both teams stumbled through dinner service. Now, the Red Team is all male and the Blue Team is all female. We will soon see how that works out on Episode 5, “Fish Out of Water.”
9:00 p.m. The recap of last week made me nostalgic after seeing how the Rookies came on strong in that weird snow-themed challenge involving soup and hearing the All-Stars grouse about always losing. Shock, awe and a lot of smoking followed in the wake of Chef Ramsay’s switcheroo of the players. As Ex-Veteran Bret Hauser put it so elegantly, “That was unexpected as ‘bleep.’”

On tonight’s episode of Hell’s Kitchen, Grammy-nominated pianist and composer Stephan Moccio makes a special guest appearance. While guest stars of a musical nature aren’t common on Hell’s Kitchen, Chef Ramsay explains that great chefs, like great musicians, must be versatile in a wide variety of cooking styles. It doesn’t sound like Moccio will play a role throughout the episode, as the teams are given the challenge to cook halibut seven different ways for Michelin star chef David LeFevre. Plus, during the dinner service, the focus appears to be on communication and support. However, the contestants should be thrilled to be […]

Avril Lavigne's first single in five years will blow fans out of the water. After weeks of social media promotion, Lavigne just released "Head Above Water" from her upcoming album. She co-wrote the ballad with Travis Clarke and Stephan Moccio, its producer. In a letter to her fans published last week, she wrote, "I spent the last few years at home sick fighting Lyme Disease. Those were the worst years of my life as I went through both physical and emotional battles. I was able to turn that fight into music I'm really proud of. I wrote songs in my bed and on the couch and recorded there mostly as well. Words and lyrics that were so true to my experience came pouring out of me effortlessly....

“The Launch,” Big Machine Records President/CEO Scott Borchetta’s singing competition on Canadian Television (CTV), is getting a second season, having landed an exclusive worldwide distribution deal with Sony Pictures Television (Spt). The show is set to begin filming in Toronto this coming Fall for the 2018-19 season.
After just one season on the air, the show has seen success from its graduates the likes of which most reality competition shows strive for: six of the series’ singles have seen major traction, including four No. 1 songs on iTunes Canada: Poesy’s “Soldier of Love,” Logan Staats’ “The Lucky Ones,” Elijah Woods x Jamie Fine’s “Ain’t Easy,” which was recently certified platinum, and The Static Shift’s “Wide Awake.”
That success, Borchetta tells Variety, is validation that “we might really have something here.”
The idea for “The Launch” came to Borchetta shortly after completing his final season as...

While diverse, this year's nominees in the Academy Awards' Best Original Song category are competing on an even playing ground. Most of the writers and performs are first-time nominees, with two-time Best Documentary winner J. Ralph and, now, eight-time Best Original Song Nominee Diane Warren as the exceptions. Still, it's an Oscar-winner free game and has many hitmakers vying for a very rare award for musicians to nab.

If the name of our country's latest reality franchise is any indication, "Canada's Got Talent" ("Cgt") has a lot to prove.
Premiering tonight on Citytv, "Cgt" will showcase the talent Canadians have to offer. Recently, during a "Canada's Got Talent" press conference and screening, the producers showered the series with praise and adoration: "Everything about this show is world-class," promises Scott Moore, the head of Rogers Broadcasting.
So does it live up to the hype?
It's Home-Grown
Inevitably, "Canada's Got Talent" is going to be compared to the American version. There are obvious similarities in terms of format, but the panel feels Canada has a greater diversity of abilities to showcase.
"The kind of multicultural act you witness in the very first show, and there are many, many more to come, are not typically the same kind of acts [as the American series]," says executive producer John Brunton. "There are things that happen here in Canada,...
