As their true motivations for the spontaneous road trip come to light, the unlikely pair must force one another to confront their issues, discovering that there might actually be more to love than just sex. The cast also includes Jordana Brewster, Vivica A. Fox, Amy Pietz, Anna Akana, and Rob Moran. This looks like a quirky, fun romantic adventure. I...

We live in scary times that can often feel like lot more unsettling than any fictional horror movie, but some of the best horror movies tap into real world terrors — and that’s especially true of the highlights from the last two decades of the genre, one of the most varied in its history. From graphic depictions of gory showdowns to subtler looks at psychological dread, the best horror movies of the 21st century typically focused on a handful of people struggling to survive a dark force beyond their comprehension. Who can’t relate to that? Here are 20 of the most potent examples, ranked from top to bottom.
20. “The Descent” (2005)
Neil Marshall’s economical monster movie takes place almost exclusively within the confines of a shadowy cave and the terrible, terrible things lurking within it. After a gradual beginning in which coworkers and friends venture into a cave during their...

Directed by Adam Wingard (VHS, A Horrible Way to Die) and set during a family reunion in a remote part of the countryside in the Us, You’re Next sees the moneyed Davison family besieged by lunatic killers in creepy animal masks. Fortunately, it turns out that Erin, the girlfriend of one of the eldest brother is something of a total bad-ass herself and is soon rallying the family around to fight back with makeshift weaponry and traps. Thus begins a small scale war with their attackers. Who will survive and what will be left of them?
Despite my initial excitement, I was actually fairly nonplussed by You’re Next at first. It seemed fairly stolid, with broadly drawn characters and an uninventive set up.

Character actor specialist, Chris Lilley, initially introduced audiences to his over-achieving, relentlessly self-absorbed and superficial private school girl character, Ja.mie King on 2005.s We Could Be Heroes, as one of six unlikely contenders for Australian of the Year. He then plunged her into the unchartered territory of public school on his next series, Summer Heights High in 2007. Now, Ja.mie is the centre of attention in Ja.mie: Private School Girl. A co-production of ABC, BBC and HBO, the series premiered last night on ABC1 to a total audience, inclusive of regional ratings, of 1.27 million. Memorable quotes and buzz words from the show were already trending on Twitter shortly after the first episode aired; particularly the term .quiche. which Ja.mie uses to describe someone who is especially attractive, or in her words, .better than hot.. Last month I walked out of a horror movie with results that I never saw coming. That movie was The Conjuring and what I never saw coming was how much I liked the movie, gushing might be a better way to describe it. What that movie lacked in originality made up for by very being very subtle and effective in making their movie unique. Right around that time, I saw a trailer for You’re Next, a home invasion type horror movie that seemed to destined to repeat the very thing The Conjuring was successful at. Leading up to the release of the film, the buzz for how good the movie was grew by the day and while I will always remain super skeptical about horror films, I still found myself excited to see this movie.

Rated R
Last month I walked out of a horror movie with results that I never saw coming. That movie was The Conjuring and what I never saw coming was how much I liked the movie, gushing might be a better way to describe it. Right around that time, I saw a trailer for You’re Next, a home invasion type horror movie that seemed to destined to repeat the very thing The Conjuring was successful at. Finished in 2011 and finally getting a wide release, comes the new home invasion horror film You’re Next. This entertaining, yet lopsided offering from the makers of V/H/S/ and The ABCs of Death is the right amount of gory in some parts and unabashedly fun in others. But it never really finds the space where it’s comfortable and ends up languishing in the land of what could have been. Still, You’re Next is an entertaining ride more often than it is not and is probably a movie best enjoyed rather than scrutinized.

The Animals Are Hunting You. Lionsgate delivers You're Next, a brutal home-invasion thriller in which no one is safe. While the blood and gore flow into theaters, check out what Cinelinx thought of this latest addition to the modern horror genre.

At a remote, country estate, a wealthy couple are preparing to mark their 35th anniversary. The home invasion subset of horror has been mined for screams, laughs, and terror for forever, but every so often a movie comes along to breathe new life into the genre, and You’Re Next does exactly that. You’Re Next is startling, bloody, funny, and terrifying. There’s nothing scarier than someone breaking into your home — your fortress of solitude, your safety net — especially when it’s random and you don’t know why your life is ruined and your wife has a machete buried in her neck. This is magnified exponentially when said house is in some random woods in Missouri, and law enforcement is a ways away. You’ve seen all of this before, certainly, but You’Re Next packs enough new weapons, villains, characters, and a sense of humor to win you over.
But let’s backpedal: It’s Paul (Rob Moran) and Aubrey’s (Re-animator...

Lionsgate’s You’Re Next takes one of the most terrifying film genres, the home-invasion movie, and turns it on its head—adding dimension, drama, and bone-chilling realism to one of life’s most universal fears. The story follows an upper-class family, the Davisons, who are as rich as they are estranged. In an earnest attempt to bring everyone back together, Aubrey and Paul Davison decide to celebrate their wedding anniversary by inviting their four children and their significant others to a family reunion at their remote and slightly rundown weekend estate.
At first it seems like decades-old sibling rivalries will derail any hope of reconciliation. But that quickly, and very abruptly, becomes the least of the Davisons’ concerns when their home comes under siege by a mask-wearing team of crossbow-bearing assailants. The family has no idea who’s attacking them, why they’re under attack, or if the attackers...

Chicago – “You’re Next” is a brutal, blunt, bloody instrument of a horror film. It works as well as it does because of an engaging performance from a future star at its center and a writer/director team willing to get in, get gory, and get out.
I wish the set-up was a bit more engaging and the tone more consistent but there’s a lot to like here, especially for fans of the genre looking for something that doesn’t need a supernatural twist to stay scary. Every issue I had with “You’re Next” was beat into bloody submission by what works about it – it’s a primal force of a movie, a sledgehammer to a genre in need of waking up.
Rating: 3.5/5.0

Family dinners can be hell. Just ask the Davisons, or what's left of them, in the horror flick You're Next, opening Friday. During a rare family dinner to celebrate the wedding anniversary of Aubrey (Barbara Crampton) and Paul (Rob Moran), a mysterious gang of masked murderers invades the Davisons' grand backwoods vacation home, only to find out that one of the victims harbors a deadly secret themselves.
Director Adam Wingard may be best known for his low-budget horror films A Horrible Way to Die (which also co-stars Aj Bowen) and V/H/S, and it's this keen sensibility to make something visually grand out of nothing that puts You're Next ahead of other recent horror and suspense films. But that's not saying much.

Counting Sheep: Wingard Offers a Fun if Altogether Trivial Entry in Home Invasion Horror
Up and coming horror filmmaker Adam Wingard’s latest, You’re Next, is certainly an homage to home invasion genre horror classics. Attempting to avoid the pratfalls of an all too familiar set up, the film gets high marks for creating a refreshingly strong female protagonist and an extremely high vibe of tongue-in-cheek audacity. While the absence of misogynist undertones makes this an extremely pleasurable horror crowd pleaser, the predilection for cheap laughs lightens the thrills to such an extent that it flies past black comedy into parody during key sequences.
The film opens with the brutal murder of a man and his newly acquired young ingénue in a swank country abode. The words “You’re Next” get scrawled on the windows in between the murders of these two victims. Soon after, we’re introduced to...

But beware – they are on the move and might be in your neighborhood already.

Lionsgate will unleash Adam Wingard's 'You're Next' into theatres on 23 August and aside from all the great things we're hearing about the flick there's also been some great assets accompanying the lead up to the release. Including this new blueprint style one-sheet which features an entirely mapped out layout of the vacation home featured in the new home invasion horror and conveniently shaped I might add! Sharni Vinson ('Bait', 'Patrick'), Aj Bowen, Nick Tucci, Wendy Glenn, Rob Moran, Amy Seimetz, Joe Swanberg ('V/H/S') and Barbara Crampton ('Die, Maniacs, Die!') all star. Check out the cool new poster below....
