In the world of HBO Max’s period comedy Minx, Jake Johnson’s Bottom Dollar publisher Doug is king — and production designer Jeff Sage, along with set decorator Doug Mowat, helped build his castle.
The first season of HBO Max’s dramedy Minx is most obviously a time capsule of feminism, capitalism, race and sexuality, but it’s also a rare look back into the world of ’70s publishing. Sage tells The Hollywood Reporter when it came to the show’s main publishing environment, Bottom Dollar, they weren’t recreating the “very high gloss Playboy look where they really spent money on photography and beautiful models.” Instead, this was “low-rent soft-pornography.”
“In the day, that was a thriving business, that whole world of sort of B-magazines where the models aren’t that attractive, the photography is pretty lame, the sets and bathing suits are very simple,...

Eddie Murphy’s return as Prince Akeem Joffer in “Coming 2 America” (streaming now on Prime Video) brings the comedy franchise back to the fictional Zamunda, home to the royal family and its future heir.
Much of the Zamunda setting was recreated in Georgia, with the palatial palace brought to life courtesy of rapper Rick Ross, who opened the doors of his estate on the outskirts of Atlanta to the film’s production team.
Says production designer Jefferson Sage: “Our big problem was, where do we find a house that had the scale of the possibilities for a very lavish palace?”
Sage and his team scouted multiple locations before zeroing in on the Ross estate, which would serve as the bones of the lush royal palace.
The 45,000 square-foot mansion in Fayetteville, Ga. sits on 235 acres and was previously owned by boxer Evander Holyfield. With 12 bedrooms and a dining room that seats up to 100 people,...

Christopher Nolan, Leonardo DiCaprio, Inception Inception Review Part I Besides its intriguing philosophical issues, Inception is a sight to behold thanks to outstanding work by cinematographer Wally Pfister, production designer Guy Hendrix Dyas, and set decorators Larry Dias and Doug Mowat. Yet, what makes Inception visually stunning are its special effects, for Christopher Nolan relies not on odd or fake-looking computer-generated images, but rather on old-fashioned real stunts. That is not to say that CGI isn't employed at all, but that when it is, it is done effectively — not for cheap thrills or to save money. Scenes like the one where a hallway spins while characters have a fistfight, or another in which the city of Paris folds in over itself like a puzzle piece fitting in place are both well-crafted and amazingly fresh in a day and age when dazzling an audience is near-impossible. After all, with the advent...

Did the Oscars surprise anyone? Sci-Fi fans, we are of course still sore over Christopher Nolan’s snub for Best Director, but Inception still was recognized with four Oscars. Genre highlights from the 83rd Academy Awards also include Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland sweeping away the two coveted design awards in Art Direction and Costume Design and The Wolfman won for Best Makeup. Pixar‘s Toy Story 3 took home Best Animated Film and Best Song.
This Sunday’s broadcast of the 83rd Academy Awards on ABC attempted to reach out to a “younger crowd” with its choice of hosts, Anne Hathaway and James Franco, but the live broadcast dropped 9% in overall ratings compared to last year’s broadcast and down 12% in the 18-49 adult demographic. Still, the show entertained 37.6 million viewers with a show full of exposition to educate new viewers about the history of past Oscar winners.

It is that time of year again when Dread Central pays its respects to those who have worked in our beloved genre and made it to the red carpet on Oscar night 2011. The genre was in rare form when it came to the nominations. Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan was up for the gold in multiple categories (best picture, best actress, cinematography, and direction); even The Wolfman was on the short-list for best make-up. And win we did.
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves because therein lie the gems of VHS past for a large share of both the winners and folks who were nominated. Highlights include a win for Melissa Leo (nominated two years ago for Frozen River), whom we remember best as Judith 'MaMa' Baer in Deadtime Stories. And who could forget Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman in American Psycho? My fellow fright fiends, he brought home the gold last night.

… And so another year of the most boring and predictable awards ceremony on planet Earth has passed. There were cheesy speeches, somebody said the ‘f’ word and Colin Firth won an Oscar. The 83rd Annual Academy Awards were presented by James Franco and Anne Hathaway to what looks like very mixed reviews judging from responses this morning.
Below is a full list of winners and losers… since, like Highlander, there can only be one! Nice to see The Wolfman and Inside Job pick up major awards and Natalie Portman bag an Oscar. She was ace in Black Swan.

In a surge reminiscent of its late-breaking Oscar season momentum, The King’s Speech triumphed at the 2011 Academy Awards, winning three of the final four categories including Best Picture, Best Actor (Colin Firth), and Best Director (Tom Hooper). The magnificent British drama took home four golden statues on Sunday, tieing Christopher Nolan’s Inception for the most Oscars, and narrowly beating critic favorite and three-time winner The Social Network.
Hosted by a smug, sleepy James Franco and a cheery, happy-to-be-there Anne Hathaway, the 3+ hour ceremony felt like an eternity. The next-generation actors were supposed to liven what is traditionally a stuffy telecast, but their monologue and subsequent appearances lacked the classy zingers of Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin’s banter or the pep of Hugh Jackman’s show.
Further attempts to appeal to a populist crowd, such as autotuning some of 2010’s big blockbusters or quipping about Charlie Sheen, fell flat,...

It’s Oscar time as the 83rd Academy Awards are about to start in Los Angeles and though the whispers on the wind blowing through Hollywood are telling us that these are the most easily predicted Oscars in years I’m still holding out for one or two surprises.

Football has the Super Bowl, baseball has the World Series, soccer has the World Cup and movies have the Academy Awards. Each year, Hollywood's schedule more or less culminates with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences handing out Oscars for the year's best films and Sunday, for the 83rd straight time, it happened again. Hosts James Franco [1] and Anne Hathaway [2] helped some of the most famous actors and actresses [3] in the world hand out the hardware for the best of 2010. Leading the pack with twelve total nominations [4] was The King's Speech, followed by True Grit with ten, Inception and The Social Network with eight, The Fighter with seven, 127 Hours with six, Black Swan and Toy Story 3 with five and The Kids Are all Right and Winter's Bone with four. And those just so happen to be the 10 films nominated for Best Picture. Did your favorite film take home an Oscar?...

It's hard to predict the winners of this year's Oscars because there is no clear-cut favorite. Last year, Kathryn Bigelow's "The Hurt Locker" started strong during awards season and maintained its dominance all the way to its Oscar best picture victory. This year, David Fincher's "The Social Network" triumphed in the beginning but the Oscar buzz surrounding the movie is slowly fading away.
But I still have my favorites and I will attempt to handicap the Oscars. Here are my predictions of who should take home Oscar gold at the 83rd Annual Academy Awards.

It’s that time again – the British version of the Oscars, without any of the glamour or buzz. As is always the way with the British Academy Film and Television Awards, the local films have pretty much cleaned up. The only real surprises are the awards that The King’s Speech didn’t win. But here’s an interesting dilemma – traditionally, the British winners don’t have as much success at the Oscars. Will we see a major change in the results in a week or two?
Some results are a delight – in particular, Chris Morris winning a Baafat for a comedy about suicide bombers – but others are a mystery. Why in the hell is there a separate award for British films if the result is that same as the Best Film catagory?

Even in London, where "The King's Speech" clearly had home-court advantage at the BAFTA Awards, the royal movie didn't win everything. One of the areas where it fell short was in Production Design, where the elaborate and densely layered work on "Inception" took home the prize for Guy Hendrix Dyas, Larry Dias and Doug Mowat. The three are also nominees at the Oscars in the Art Direction category, where they once again appear to be in a tight race with "King's Speech" for top honors. (The other nominees: "Alice in Wonderland,"...

It's good to be the King. And it's even better to be "The King's Speech" at the British Academy Film Awards, also known to people who don't like to type a lot as the BAFTAs. Continuing it's domination of awards season of late, "The King's Speech" was crowned with seven BAFTAs, including the awards for Best Supporting Actor (Geoffrey Rush), Best Supporting Actress (Helena Bonham Carter), Best Actor (Colin Firth), Best British Film, and Best Film. Yes, it was the best film made in England or anywhere else in 2010.
Cult film fans were well represented at the BAFTAs this year, at least in the categories "The King's Speech" wasn't elligible for. Chris Morris' terrorist slapstick comedy "Four Lions" won Best Debut by a British Filmmaker, Tom Hardy from "Bronson" and "Inception" won the Rising Star Award, and "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" won best Foreign Language Film.

hollywoodnews.com: 2010 oozed fantastic films—but you wouldn’t know it for how completely “The King’s Speech” dominated prestigious award nominations. With 14 BAFTA nods, and many wins early in the program, it seemed the evening might be a sweep for the film. In the end, “The King’s Speech” only won in seven of the categories for which it was nominated, with other formidable films beating it out for the other half.
Included in its wins were Best Film, Outstanding British Film, Best Actor (Colin Firth), Best Supporting Actor (Geoffrey Rush), Best Supporting Actress (Helena Bonham Carter), Best Original Screenplay (David Seidler), and the Anthony Asquith Award for Film Music.
Beating it out were “Alice in Wonderland” for Best Makeup/Hair and Best Costume Design (Colleen Atwood), “Inception” for Best Sound and Best Production Design(Guy Hendrix Dyas, Larry Dias, Douglas A. Mowat), “The Social Network...

The 2011 Orange British Academy Film Awards were handed out today and to very little surprise The King's Speech led the way with seven BAFTA Awards as it was also the most nominated film among all nominees with 14 total nominations.
Among its achievements it took home Best Picture, Outstanding British Film, Best Actor for Colin Firth, Best Original screenplay for David Seidler and Best Score for Alexandre Desplat. Where the surprises came were in the supporting wins for both Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham Carter showing The Fighter apparently doesn't pack as much of a punch across the pond as it does here.
Also, for those of you trying to predict the Oscars and are wondering which direction to go with Best Director, David Fincher took home the award for The Social Network, one of three wins on the night for the film. Aaron Sorkin also won for Adapted Screenplay and Film Editing.

The Oscar nominations have been announced and it’s great to see Inception, Toy Story 3, Alice in Wonderland, Harry Potter, How to Train Your Dragon, Iron Man 2, Tangled, Tron, and Wolfman being honored this year. This year’s nominations hit the familiar marks that the sci-fi genre is most associated with in the categories of special effects, art direction, animation, costuming, and make-up.
Inception is the most visibly well-rounded in achievements in film-making and leads the sci-fi/fantasy pack with eight nominations, though director Christopher Nolan was snubbed in the Best Director nominations. Toy Story 3 follows with an impressive five nominations, and both films garnered nominations in the Best Picture category.
Check out the breakdown of the nominations by film, followed by a listing of all nominations by category. [Sci-fi nominees in bold]

Like we promised yesterday, the 83rd annual Academy Award nominations have been announced this morning -- following yesterdays Razzie nominees funnily enough! Announced at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Los Angeles, California by President Tom Sherak and last year's Best Supporting Actress winner Mo'Nique. So this means that the winners of these categories, will go on to be announced at the event itself - hosted by 2011 nominees Anne Hathaway, and James Franco (unfortunately Rickey Gervais was busy) - which is held February 27th.
Looking at the nominations for 2011, it looks like The King's Speech and The Fighter are looking at some good wins, with 12-13 nods each -- along with, of course The Social Network. But whats got me, is the lack of nominations for Nolan's Inception -- which was bloody fantastic, and my second favorite of the year.
It just seems that they are over shadowing it with dramas,...

Tom Hooper’s The King’s Speech lead the Oscar nominations this morning with twelve mentions, making the regal drama the film to beat at the 83rd Annual Academy Awards on February 27.
The Coen brothers’ True Grit followed closely with ten nominations and early frontrunner The Social Network finished with eight. “Ten seems like an awful lot,” the Coen brothers said in a joint statement Tuesday. ”We don’t want to take anyone else’s.”
All three were included in the “Best Picture” category, as expected, along with several other awards shoo-ins like The Kids Are All Right and Toy Story 3 (only the third animated film ever in the category). Winter’s Bone was the only surprise in the field of ten, possibly edging out Ben Affleck’s critically-acclaimed The Town or Mark Romanek’s Never Let Me Go, which were both snubbed from the ceremony entirely.

Okay. For most, this is not really that important. For us (for some unknown reason) the Academy Awards, and yes, even the nomination announcements, are marked days in our calendar. Since we gained the capacity to retain memories we’ve watched the Oscars and rooted for our favourite flicks… and by rooted we mean bet on the winners in hopes of walking away both Oscar prediction champion and with a few extra bucks in our pocket. This year the road starts here with the full list of nominees for the 83rd Academy Awards.
Before we get to the list we obviously have to add our two cents… The King’s Speech reigns supreme with the most noms (12 in total) and deservedly so But we think it will have a hard time winning anything except Best Actor for Colin Firth.
