The history of movie culture is full of colorful characters committed to elevating the experience. Donald Rugoff’s exhibition and distribution company Cinema 5 paved the way for a second generation of companies enhancing cinematic culture like the studio (sm)art-house divisions and Landmark Theaters, and then a third wave of companies like the Alamo Drafthouse and A24, turning movie-going into an event. In Searching for Mr. Rugoff, film distribution veteran and producer Ira Deutchman goes back to an early mentor, inspired by a speech given by the great exhibitor Dan Talbot (proprietor of Lincoln Plaza Cinemas and New Yorker Films) at the Ifp Gotham Awards several years ago. In the speech as told by Talbot, Rugoff moved to Marthas Vineyard after having lost his company and started showing films in an old church.

Nick Nicolaou doesn’t have a perfect answer for why he does what he does. That is both the blessing and the curse of Abel Ferrara’s documentary ode to the tradition of New York cinephilia, “The Projectionist.” It can be a problem when a viewer has spent the length of a feature with a subject and at the end, still does not truly understand what drives him. Nicolaou tells Ferrara that he simply loves two things: “Making money and keeping neighborhood theaters alive.” Could it be that simple?

Back in August, the website, Monster Legacy, conducted an interview with Nick Nicolaou, co-founder of the Make-Up Effects Group, the company responsible for the special effects seen in the 2005 Man-Thing film. How the budget effected the film: Nick Nicolaou: We were approached by Brett Leonard and the production and were successful with our bid for the project. The script was cool — but so many things started to be cut and changed due to budgetary issues. I feel the final film lost so much by the time it got to the screen. There were more interesting character building ideas surrounding the Man-Thing creature, that showed his connection to the swamp and the environment. Many were heavily FX related, so they were the first to go. Why the change to Man-Thing's comic design: Nick Nicolaou: The Director & Production Designer wanted to “tweak” the design a little and Marvel were...

As his career expanded, he left behind the latex and Karo syrup and began creating characters in a different manner ... by portraying them on screen. An article for an Australian news outlet has revealed that Tom Savini came out of retirement to assist and supervise FX on two upcoming films: Redd, Inc. and Mary Doe . The former, directed by Daniel Krige, takes today's popular "strangers trapped in a single location" scenario, except this time it's strangers (led by an abducted web cam model) who wind up in an office and are subjected to sundry cruelty from a wrongly-convicted serial killer. Nicholas Hope plays the lead baddie against actress Kelly Paterniti. Savini has a cameo. Mary Doe , meanwhile, is seeking funds and aims to roll soon under the direction of Nick Nicolaou. That film is a zombie tale.

While Nick Nicolaou's upcoming independent zombie effort Mary Doe is a bit on the confusing side in terms of how it's all coming together, one thing is for certain ... with the addition of the great Tom Savini, Nicolaou and company are certainly headed in the right direction!
"We have been developing the project for 2 years now and setting up a solid platform to move from," Nicolaou told us earlier. My company, Make-up Effects Group, has been a force behind all my projects, and we have brought together an amazing array of production art and design, make-up effects, miniature models and animatronic creatures that you would never find in an independent film of our budget level.

I ran across the Facebook page for a new horror film that is currently in pre-production and it sure sounds promising. It is apparent that Mary Doe is in its early stages, but that does not mean I am not excited about this flick.
Here is what Make-up Effects Group [Meg] partner Nick Nicolaou told Fango about the project: “Mary Doe is a throwback to Aliens and The Thing, adding, “That’s the style we’re going for,” and Nicolaou notes, “It’s going to be old-school special effects, great characters, physical mutants and other creatures in there. It’s what we grew up with, in that period. It’s what got us into the industry that we love. We’re not going to go with those video-looking CG beings because we don’t have the money to do it, so we’ll do everything in-camera, in homage to all those films that really inspired us.
