Carrie Coon is confused and under the weather, though the two don’t appear to be connected. At the tail end of her March press tour for “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” the Emmy- and Tony-nominated actor caught a bug akin to bronchitis. “I don’t know if it’s bronchitis,” Coon said over Zoom. “I’m being dramatic… but that’s my job!”
Bronchitis or not, confusion isn’t one of her symptoms. It’s the result of a particularly complicated Emmy season. Typically held each September — a tradition that strains logic in and of itself, since no one really follows the old fall-to-spring broadcast television calendar anymore — the Emmys will be held twice in 2024. The 75th Primetime Emmys took place in January, after the original date in 2023 was pushed back to accommodate the WGA and SAG strikes, and the 76th Primetime Emmys are scheduled for September. Depending who you ask, the streaming wars are either over (and Netflix has won!) or still very much ongoing.
Well, if you came to this story, you’ve asked us. Our answer: Yes, Netflix has won first place, but the other podiums are still in play.
Historically, the way to evaluate streamers was by subscriber count. Though the industry’s grow-or-die era is over, subscribers are still very important to ranking the streaming services. Revenue may have taken over as the key-est of the KPIs (key performance metrics) for Netflix and others, but there is no revenue without subscribers.
We’ve recorded the subscriber counts for each of the major streaming services as of December 31, 2023. Netflix will report its Q1 results on April 18, 2024; everyone else will follow with their own updates.

Bertha Russell is staring out the window at the falling rain. Perched a few feet away, anxiously waiting, is her guest, but Mrs. Russell (played by Carrie Coon) pays her little mind. One gets the sense she could’ve stood there peacefully for 10 minutes, maybe 20, without eliciting any questions from the invited woman (a character best left unnamed), but a TV show can rarely ask its audience to sit in silence for that long, so Bertha pivots to her prey and dispatches with her quickly. “Some gossip has reached me that I confess I find disquieting,” she says, swatting away a follow-up query meant to steer focus to a separate topic. Instead, Bertha continues apace, proceeding to annihilate her visitor, bluntly laying out her failings before making clear she has no room for recourse. She will do what Bertha demands, or she will be further embarrassed — perhaps in public, rather...

There’s ample gold leaf in Season 2 of Julian Fellowes’ “The Gilded Age,” miles of flashy yardage, a flock of feathered hats and swoon-worthy Fifth Avenue ballrooms. For many viewers, this visual candy will be more than enough to soothe the hunger left in the wake of the creator’s massive British hit “Downton Abbey.”

Luke Grimes as Jake and Ellie Kemper as Helen in ‘Happiness for Beginners’ (Photo by Barbara Nitke / Netflix)
Netflix has released the first official photos from the upcoming film adaptation of Katherine Center’s bestselling novel Happiness for Beginners. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt‘s Ellie Kemper and Yellowstone‘s Luke Grimes star in the comedy premiering on July 27, 2023.
Kemper and Grimes are joined by Nico Santos, Blythe Danner, and Benjamin Cook. Shayvawn Webster, Esteban Benito, and Julia Shiplett also star.
Describing her attraction to the project, Kemper told Netflix’s Tudum she believed it “was such a well-told story of one woman’s experience in getting to know herself better.” Kemper added, “I was immediately excited about the prospect of playing a woman whose outlook on life, when we first meet her, isn’t so sunny. I’ve played a lot of optimistic rubes, and Helen was neither.”

Gossip Girl has always used social media to throw the lives of Manhattan’s teen Upper East Siders into a tizzy. We want to know what social media mediums the cast of Gossip Girl Season 2 loves most. In the video above, part of TV Insider’s Just Asking! series, they dish on the go-to accounts they turn to when in need of a laugh, inspiration, and sometimes even history and psychology lessons. Grace Duah (Shan Barnes) is holding out hope for Twitter, as that’s where her beloved K-Pop community flocks. “My Twitter Tl is just my BTS stan mutuals,” she says with a smile. “It’s a very safe space. They only really ever talk about K-Pop…with the occasional tea. I don’t feel overwhelmed when I go there.” A rarity for that site, indeed! HBO Max’s Gossip Girl season two is welcoming back original cast member Michelle Trachtenberg, reprising her role as Georgina Sparks. And the first three official photos from the upcoming second season even includes one showing Michelle as Georgina!
In an interview with Teen Vogue, showrunner Joshua Safran explained what Trachtenberg’s Georgina will add to the mix.
“What she brought to the original series was anarchy,” stated Safron. “She’s an anarchist. She’ll just do anything and just for any reason she decides. So we brought that energy to the first show, and then we brought that energy back to this one. She’s the same, and that’s what I think is so fun, that Michelle is older, we’re all older, Georgina is older yet has the exact same energy. She’s out of time.

And just like that, he’s single. In this Sex and the City–like dramedy, Uncoupled, from cocreators Darren Star and Jeffrey Richman, fortysomething real estate agent Michael Lawson (Neil Patrick Harris) is dumped at the birthday party he planned for longtime love Colin (Tuc Watkins). Ouch. Now heartbroken, Michael picks up the pieces — and explores the intricacies of dating as a gay man of a certain age. (Credit: Barbara Nitke/Netflix) Luckily, he has support from besties Suzanne (Tisha Campbell), Billy (Emerson Brooks), and Stanley (Brooks Ashmanskas), plus a newly divorced client (Marcia Gay Harden). Star and Richman conceived Uncoupled after several real-life long-term relationships they knew of “imploded in a very specific way. It’s your worst nightmare but also a great jumping-off point for a romantic comedy.” Ultimately, they say the show proves “on the other side of the worst thing that can happen is hope.” Uncoupled,...

They’re killing it. Not literally, mind you. But if being slayed by laughter is your thing, Season 2 of Hulu’s mystery-comedy Only Murders in the Building delivers. Just watch Martin Short hog the tabloid spotlight when he and his true-crime podcasting buds (Steve Martin and Selena Gomez) become persons of interest in a bloody murder. “They were wrong: Oliver Putnam can get arrested in this town — and oh baby, does that feel wonderful!” Barbara Nitke/Hulu Truly, comic chemistry is a wonder to behold, and Murders displays it in abundance whenever Short’s has-been theater director mocks Martin as Charles, a sweetly befuddled former TV cop. “Oh, look at the wheels turn slowly. So slowly,” Oliver quips as Charles processes the latest plot twist. And there are many, as the mirthful musketeers of amateur sleuthing once again try to solve a puzzling murder in the Arconia, their landmark Upper West Side apartment building,...

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the DVD I reviewed in this Blog Post. The opinions I share are my own.
It used to be we worried about the threat of artificial intelligence in movies like Colossus: The Forbin Project or “The Ultimate Computer” episode of Star Trek. Today, though, artificial intelligence is here thanks to Siri and Cortanna and their cousins. We talk to our phones and they answer back and these bots are growing increasingly sophisticated. As a result, what seemed ahead of its time a mere give years ago is looking increasingly prescient.
CBS’ Person of Interest arrived on September 22, 2011 and came with a fine pedigree having been created by Jonathan Nolan with J.J. Abrams on board as Executive Producer. Lifetime is staying in the "Project Runway" business for the foreseeable future: The cable network has renewed the fashion design reality series for three more seasons.
Deadline reports that Lifetime and "PR" producer The Weinstein Company struck a lucrative deal that will keep the series on the air through a 17th season, and the network has also renewed the two "Runway" spinoffs, "Project Runway All Stars" and "Project Runway Junior," for additional episodes as well. There’s no shortage of material when you’re staring in disbelief at the ridiculously rich, or making fun of them, but Odd Mom Out (built around Jill Kargman’s novels) has a strange feeling of over-familiarity.
Kargman stars as the “normal” forced into the world of New York’s super-elite, and while her daily routine is very similar to that of your average person tuning in (perhaps minus the walking around in her underwear all the time), she finds herself having to rub elbows with people she would rather have nothing to do with an awful lot of the time.
Said forced contact comes by way of school, and the mommy insanity that goes along with a Kindergarten by and for the hopelessly vapid. Although, new entrants in the fabulous world of intolerable people are Jill’s brother-in-law, and his wife, now that they’ve sold their bagel franchise for about $700 million.

Are we missing something? What's with all the animosity toward Michael C.? Sure, he's no Christian Siriano, but the guy seems fairly nice and capable enough to at least be on Project Runway -- not to mention talented in the judges' eyes. Yet, Thursday's episode opened and closed with the designers expressing disdain for the designer who's won two challenges so far. Perhaps there's something about him we haven't quite seen yet. What we did see, though, were some hideous dresses, courtesy of this week's models -- a bevy of former bridesmaids who brought their most frumptastic frocks to the runway.

Fresh off her memorable guest turn on ABC's Modern Family, my former Scrubs co-star is headed to 30 Rock to play the latest notch on Jack Donaghy's belt, sources confirm to me exclusively. Sarah Jessica Parker and the gang have been working on Sex and the City 2 for a few months now, and the set seems like it's a busy place. Carrie and her three pals have entertained their usual share of gentlemen, but the sequel is set to include all sorts of celebrity cameos from Penelope Cruz to Miley Cyrus and now even Tim Gunn. It's a major project that stars probably want to be a part of, but at the same time, it's nice when the focus is on the four main ladies. So, tell us - do you like all these Satc 2 cameos? Image courtesy Barbara Nitke/Bravo Do You Like All These Sex and the City 2 Cameos? Yes - It's awesome, the more the merrier! No - Too many bells and whistles! I just like the four friends.

Chatting With … Sri Rao
I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Sri Rao, the former head writer of last year’s best soap opera on either daytime or nighttime television, General Hospital: Night Shift. In addition to discussing his work on that gay-inclusive, critically acclaimed show, Rao also shared his thoughts on the depiction of gay characters in the genre, who should write gay characters, how As the World Turns handled the Luke and Noah storyline, as well as news about a new project very close to his heart.
[While very interesting and worthwhile, this interview is five pages long. To skip directly to this week's In My Humble Opinion, Gool Newsbeat and Scoops And Spoilers click here.]

AfterElton.com: You were the head writer for General Hospital: Night Shift. Had you written for soaps before that?
Sri Rao: No, this was my first foray into the soap opera genre. I had been watching General Hospital for my entire life. I’m a long-time fan of the show so I was very familiar with it.
