With Pixar’s “Soul” winning two Oscars Sunday night for animated feature and original score, the timing couldn’t be better for “22 vs Earth,” a prequel short about why the skeptical sidekick (voiced by Tina Fey) refuses to be born (streaming April 30th on Disney+). Also returning is Alicia Braga as soul counselor Jerry.
Directed by “Soul” editor Kevin Nolting (a Pixar vet for nearly 22 years), the short provided an opportunity to dig more deeply into 22’s aversion to life until she meets jazz pianist Joe Gardner (Jamie Foxx), who’s determined to return to Earth to play professionally in New York. “All during the making of ‘Soul,’ we wondered why she didn’t want to be born,” said Nolting, who also edited the Oscar-winning “Inside Out” and “Up” for director/chief creative officer Pete Docter.

A new short from Pixar Animation Studios will revisit the skeptical new soul 22 long before she ever met Joe Gardner. Debuting on Disney+ on April 30, the animated 22 vs. Earth returns Tina Fey back to “The Great Before” as the voice of quick-witted and sarcastic soul 22.
Set before the events of Soul, the original short is directed by 21-year Pixar veteran Kevin Nolting.
“While making Soul, we talked about the why of a new soul not wanting to live on Earth, but it didn’t ultimately belong in that movie,” said Nolting. ‘22 vs. Earth was a chance to explore some of the unanswered questions we had about why 22 was so cynical. As a fairly cynical person myself, it felt like perfect material.”

“Chicago 7,” which is nominated for the film-editing Oscar along with “The Father,” “Nomadland,” “Promising Young Woman” and “Sound of Metal,” won in the Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic) category. “Palm Springs” won in the comedy category.
Since 2000, when Ace splits its film award into separate drama and comedy categories, one of its winners has gone on to win the Oscar for Best Film Editing 15 times in 21 years. All but one of those wins have come in the drama category.
“Soul” won the award for animated film, while “My Octopus Teacher” took the prize in the documentary category.

The film entailed four years of production and hundreds of workers. “I think most of the team were excited to stretch outside the box of what people might expect from an animated movie. Subjects like why are we alive? What are we doing with our time on Earth?” Docter says. Moviegoers think they understand the life of a screenwriter. Thanks to “Sunset Boulevard,” “In a Lonely Place,” “Barton Fink,” “The Player,” “The Muse,” “Seven Psychopaths,” “Adaptation,” “Trumbo,” “Mank” and others, the image is clear: Scripters are friendless, cynical people hunched over a solitary keyboard, plagued by self-doubt and studio interference.

For nearly 30 years now, Pixar fans have been scratching their heads over one major plot hole in the original Toy Story. If Buzz Lightyear doesn’t believe that he’s a toy for most of the movie, then why does he stop moving and act like an inanimate object whenever Andy or someone else walks into the room? Well, in the wake of the studio’s latest hit film Soul arriving on Disney Plus, one Pixar director has now addressed this long-running burning question.

Editors Margaret Sixel ("Mad Max: Fury Road") and Hank Corwin ("The Big Short") were the big Ace winners Friday night at the Beverly Hilton thanks to the split between drama and comedy. Meanwhile, "Inside Out" (edited by Kevin Nolting) and "Amy” (edited by Chris King) took animation and doc, respectively. This means"The Revenant" lost another opportunity for bragging rights for editor Stephen Mirrione. In terms of the bigger Oscar picture, Corwin becomes the frontrunner because of the surging momentum for "The Big Short," which took the PGA, although he'll have additional competition from Tom McArdle ("Spotlight"), who wasn't nominated by Ace but was nominated by the Academy for his less showy but very well crafted work on the Best Picture frontrunner. Pixar.s Inside Out has been a huge success for the beloved animation studio. Sunday night they won Eddies from the Editors Guild for best animated feature (Kevin Nolting), best feature film drama (Bob Murawski & Chris Innis) and best documentary (Geoffrey Richman), respectively. The Hangover won best feature comedy or musical (Debra Neil-Fisher). The Hurt Locker beat Avatar again, as it did with the Producers and Directors, but lost the Screen Actors Guild ensemble to Inglourious Basterds. One of the most interesting noms among the Ace’s lists is in the Documentary category – This Is It. Almost all but forgotten, except for those full-page Fyc ads of the Jackson rehearsal documentary in Variety. I’d love to see it as the big surprise Best Picture nominee on nomination morning. No film has won the Academy Award for Best Picture without also having received an Ace editing nom since “Ordinary People” in 1981.

As the nominations were unveiled Tuesday morning for the American Cinema Editors' 60th annual Ace Eddie Awards, this year's awards season is looking more and more like a Hollywood version of Comic-Con.
Just like the Art Directors Guild, the editors organization nominated "Avatar," "District 9" and "Star Trek."
Those three movies will compete for best edited dramatic feature film along with "The Hurt Locker" and "Up in the Air."
Two Meryl Streep vehicles -- "Julie & Julia" and "It's Complicated" -- were nominated in the best comedy or musical category along with "(500) Days of Summer," "The Hangover" and "A Serious Man."
For best animated film, the contenders are "Coraline," "Fantastic Mr. Fox" and "Up."
"This Is It," the Michael Jackson documentary, scored a slot in Ace's best documentary race alongside "The Cove" and "Food, Inc."
An honorary society of motion picture editors founded in 1950, Ace's noms usually point toward Oscar victory...
