“Tenzing,” a film about the true story of Sherpa Tenzing Norgay’s 1953 trek to the summit of Mount Everest alongside Edmund Hillary, has been snapped up by Apple Original Films.
Casting is underway for Tenzing while “Loki” star Tom Hiddleston is set to play New Zealand mountaineer Hillary.
Willem Dafoe (“Eternity’s Gate”) is expected to star as English expedition leader Colonel John Hunt.
Apple acquired the rights the project in what was described as a “competitive situation” as Cannes kicked off. It is one of the first major deals to come out of the market as it goes into Day 3.
“Tibetan born Tenzing Norgay, alongside New Zealand mountaineer Edmund Hillary, both outsiders on a British Expedition, defied insurmountable odds to achieve what was once thought impossible, reaching the summit of the world’s tallest mountain, Mount Everest,” reads the logline. “After six previous attempts, Tenzing risked everything for one final venture.

The 3D team, which shot Avatar, set out on location to Everest for eight weeks, to recreate the epic tale of Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay’s conquest of Mt. Everest in 1953. The new footage has been merged with film and photographs of the 1953 expedition taken by Lowe and cleaned up, and retro-fitted into 3D – in the exact same way James Cameron converted his film Titanic. The result in merging the footage is seamless. The film is directed by Canadian-born filmmaker Leanne Pooley, who has directed over twenty features, including the documentaries Haunting Douglas, The Promise, Try Revolution, and Shackleton’s Captain. Her documentary The Topp Twins – Untouchable Girls won the People’s Choice Documentary Award at the Festival. Beyond The Edge will have its first screening at Tiff on Friday, September 6th and will be seeking distribution. Watch the first trailer below.

We're trying something a little different for today's cryptid feature: Slate.com's history blog “The Vault” shared this historical curiosity regarding the legendary Yeti, or “Abominable Snowman” – an apelike creature of Nepalese folklore and the subject of many legends and alleged sightings in the Himalayan Mountains. I'm sure you've heard all the good Yeti stories, but probably not this one: apparently the prospect of Yeti-hunting in Nepal was of some concern to the U.S. Government back in the day, enough to merit this 1959 Foreign Service memo from the newly-established American Embassy in Kathmandu titled “Regulations Governing Mountain Climbing Expeditions in Nepal – Relating to Yeti.” Following sightings of Yeti tracks by legendary explorers Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay in 1953, Yeti hunting became quite a phenomenon, with highlights including a 1954 “Snowman Expedition” to Mount Everest sponsored by the UK Daily Mail and a later mission financed by American oil tycoon and cryptid-hunter Tom Slick.

Tom Hardy is in early talks to star in Doug Liman's "Everest", an adaptation of Jeffrey Archer's historical novel "Paths of Glory", at Sony Pictures says Deadline.
Archer's book deals with the mystery of George Mallory's ascent of Mount Everest. The mountain climber made several attempts to be the first to reach the summit. However Mallory and partner Andrew 'Sandy' Irvine never returned from their June 1924 climb.
In 1999, Mallory's frozen body was found near the summit on the North Face, and debate has raged ever since about whether he was actually on his way down or up. Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay were the first to make a successful ascent of the peak in 1953.
Liman and Sheldon Turner have worked on the script and the project will be Liman's first one after he completes filming the Groundhog Day-style sci-fi drama "All You Need Is Kill" with Tom Cruise.

Edmund Hillary, with the help up Tenzing Norgay, famously became the first man to ever reach the summit of Mount Everest in 1953, but one can't ignore the efforts that George Mallory made before him. The British mountaineer was the first to ever try and scale the world's tallest mountain, attempting the climb three times before he died doing so in 1924 (disappearing along with climbing partner Andrew "Sandy" Irvine and lost until their bodies were discovered in 1999). While Everest has been scaled many times (though bodies are littered near the top of the summit of those who failed), the feat was symbolically important and for its...

Fascinating documentary about George Mallory's ill-fated Everest expedition. By Cath Clarke
In 1999, the top American mountaineer Conrad Anker discovered the body of George Mallory on Everest. Mallory and his young climbing partner, Sandy Irvine, disappeared in 1924, last spotted just 800 metres from the peak. The enduring mystery is whether they were going up or coming down (which would place them at the summit 30 years before Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary). In this National Geographic documentary Anker goes back to Everest to retrace Mallory's expedition. With the exception of some TV-duff recreations and CSI-style razzle-dazzle it is fascinating. What drives men and women to risk snow blindness, frostbite, (there is a gruesome story of a man coughing up a bit of frozen larynx) and a good chance of death on Everest? Mallory's famous answer was, of course: "Because it's there." The film is at its most absorbing as Liam Neeson narrates an account of Mallory's life,...

The Wildest Dream, a docudrama set for September release, examines enduring exploration puzzle – but mystery remains
In so many ways, it was a peculiarly British expedition to Everest – with its four cases of Montebello champagne, 60 tins of quail and foie gras, 70 porters, 300 animals, and the climbers wearing hobnailed boots and gabardine jackets.
But, 86 years on, the mystery remains. Did the obsessed aesthete George Mallory and his colleague Sandy Irvine make it to the top and become the first people to conquer the world's highest and most formidable peak?
A documentary-drama, The Wildest Dream, to be released in cinemas in September, examines one of the most enduring and possibly unanswerable of exploration mysteries. While it does not offer a conclusion, it does throw up some fascinating new angles, and shows that the pair could have made it to the top.

It was a sleepless night, and I found myself rolling around in my sheets, as restless as I'd been in a long time, experiencing that uniquely displeasing kind of anxiety that you actually feel in your heart as the pressure builds. Could I really be considering this? Hell yeah, I could, and was--my turbulent bed thoughts were being disrupted by a 19,340 foot behemoth that was pulling me to it like an inescapable black hole. Sir Edmund Hillary, the New Zealander who first reached Mount Everest's peak with Tenzing Norgay in 1953, once responded tersely to a question posed to him by a reporter as to why he climbed mountains. "Because its there" Sir Edmund said. Luckily I find myself having more of a reason to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania January 7th, 2010. My friend Kenna, a talented singer and musician, has spent the...

Thanks for all the cold tips last night! I do keep a space heater in my room, and have an electric blanket on my bed so I'm on top of that already. Overall I'm just not a fan of bundling up like I'm headed up the mountain with Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary just to be able to sit comfortably in the living room. But! I will be back in Miami on Saturday evening, where the weather is currently mild to chilly. And we have once again arrived at Wednesday night, which means that... well right now it doesn't mean much because "Glee!" isn't going to be back until after the behemoth that is "American Idol" rolls through. Anyone looking forward to that? Well, here's what's on tonight:
8:00pm: "I Get That A Lot" on CBS. Special presentation. I think the entire premise of the show is celebrities pretending...

NEW YORK -- As spectacular as the IMAX format is, many films produced for it are little more than travelogues or nature documentaries. "Everest", an account of an expedition to climb the world's tallest, most-forbidding mountain, is an exception.
One of the best IMAX movies yet made, it is a powerful, absorbing adventure boasting a strong emotional component and amazing visuals. Premiering at the Sony Lincoln Square complex, the film should prove to be among the highest-grossing IMAX films to date.
A special, lightweight IMAX camera was devised for use under the arduous conditions posed by Everest, which has claimed more than 150 lives. The film chronicles the expedition of a group consisting of, among others, an American couple on their honeymoon, a Spanish woman and the son of Tenzing Norgay -- who, along with Sir Edmund Hillary, was first to climb the mountain in 1953.
The climb shown here was undertaken only a few days after the infamous 1996 tragedy that claimed eight lives, which lends much emotional weight to the narrative. The film documents the filmmakers' efforts to help rescue surviving members of the ill-fated group. Few will be unmoved upon hearing stories such as that of Rob Hall, the experienced guide who died alone on the mountain after talking to his pregnant wife via cell phone.
The film details the geology and history of Everest as well as the numerous dangers the mountain presents, including the ever-present, terrifying possibility of an avalanche. The extreme altitude and resulting lack of oxygen make for particularly treacherous conditions, though we are introduced to at least one climber who makes the ascent without benefit of additional oxygen for the "challenge."
"Everest" presents one amazing visual after another. Even the introductions to the principal characters, seen engaging in activities such as rock climbing on the shores of Mexico or cycling through the canyons of Utah, are stunning. The magnificence of the icy mountain is captured in spectacular fashion; were it not for the dangers presented so vividly, "Everest" would no doubt cause an upsurge in the number of mountain climbers.
