Comedian Harry Deansway’s infringement case against Steve Coogan’s production company Baby Cow is going to trial, Variety can confirm.
Numerous attempts to reach an out of court settlement collapsed and a trial date has been tentatively set for Oct. 2024.
Deansway, whose real name is Joshua Rinkoff, filed suit against Baby Cow last year in the U.K. High Court, claiming that the prodco’s head of comedy Rupert Majendie had copied the format of his YouTube show “Shambles” to develop the stand-up series “Live at the Moth Club.”
Majendie is the creator of “Live at the Moth Club,” which aired on UKTV in December 2022, and is also credited as an executive producer and director.
“It is extremely disappointing that my friend Rupert Majendie, head of comedy at Steve Coogan’s Baby Cow should have copied my original work like this without so much as courtesy call,” Deansway told Variety in a statement.

Comedian Harry Deansway is suing Steve Coogan’s production company Baby Cow over a comedy series called “Live at the Moth Club,” which he claims rips off his YouTube show “Shambles.”
In his filing, Deansway, whose real name is Joshua Rinkoff, describes “Shambles” as a sitcom “centered around a live comedy night” at a run-down club struggling to make ends meet. The show blends fact and fiction by combining a sitcom set behind the scenes of the club with real comedy performances in front of a live audience.
“Shambles,” which featured appearances from well-known comedians including Aisling Bea and Dan Schreiber, was released on YouTube in 2013 as a six-part series, followed by a second season in 2015.

Baby Cow are the production company behind some of the U.K.’s best-loved comedy shows, including “Gavin and Stacey” with James Corden and Ruth Jones, Julian Barratt and Noel Fielding’s “The Mighty Boosh” and “This Time With Alan Partridge” starring Steve Coogan as the cringe-worthy fictional television host.
It was a prescient Coogan who founded Baby Cow alongside producer Henry Normal in 1998, long before talent-led production companies were a thing. In 2016 BBC Studios took a majority stake in the company, with Coogan staying on as a shareholder and creative director. He also stars in many (although not all) of the company’s projects – which span TV, film, comedy and drama – including the recent Channel 4 series “Chivalry,” in which he plays an old-school film producer getting to grips with a changing world opposite Sarah Solemani, and upcoming feature film “The Lost King,” about an amateur historian who finds...

In Steven Cantor's Dancer, Sergei Polunin burns bright with a ferocious energy. British Royal Ballet's youngest ever male principal dancer, Polunin, has been compared to Nureyev and dismissed as party boy by the media. The documentary, executive produced by Steve Coogan, Carolyn Marks Blackwood, Christine Langan, Henry Normal, Jamie Schutz, and Nichola Martin, with producer Gabrielle Tana, creatively avoids neither side, and, with extensive access to the Polunin family and archival footage, paints a far more complex picture of the young man and his journey.
Sergei Polunin: "You cannot create more steps for ballet. Everything is already developed but you can freshen it up ..."
Growing up in Kherson, Southern Ukraine, where "everybody was poor," Sergei says, "you don't feel the difference.

The two production companies will outline the support offered by Coogan and Henry Normal's production company Baby Cow in a letter to the BBC's Director of Television Danny Cohen today (March 4).

According to The Guardian, Avalon's Jon Thoday and Hat Trick's Jimmy Mulville will also challenge Cohen and Tony Hall to a live televised debate on the future of the channel, which is set to move online this autumn.
They write: "The subject should be, 'Is a reduced spend on younger viewers by the BBC avoidable and will BBC Three online succeed?' We suggest this be broadcast live on BBC Three."

Produced as a feature – 4 TV half-hours – and as a 13 episode web series, Sos: Save Our Skins is the tale of two hapless British geeks who wake up in New York City to discover that the entire human race has vanished. But as they explore the seemingly empty world before them, Ben (Nat Saunders) and Stephen (Chris Hayward) soon realize they’re not alone after all. This new comedy sci-fi adventure launched on FEARnet in the U.S. in April on its new “Twisted Comedy” block and on Blue Ant Media’s Bite TV in Canada. This U.K.-Canada coproduction was produced by Steve Coogan and Henry Normal’s Baby Cow Productions in the U.K. and by Duopoly in Canada.
“We discovered Sos: Save Our Skins in a pitch session at the Just For Laughs Conference and were determined to find a way to finance it,” said Catherine Tait , Executive Producer. “Co-productions are challenging but in the case of Sos, the talent and final results were entirely worth the effort!”
Sos: Save Our Skins was created, written by and stars two of Britain’s in-demand comedy writing teams, Nat Saunders and Chris Hayward. Together they have contributed to hit U.K. shows such as Big Train (BBC), Smack the Pony (Channel 4), Trollied (Sky) and Fit (Cbbc), and created the popular web series Misey Bear(BBC). Sos also stars Hannah Spear (Versus Valerie, Sexy Nerd Girl) as Kill the cannibal and Peter Serafinowicz (Shaun of the Dead, Guardians of the Galaxy) as the voice of Andrew the Alien.
A sci-fi, comedy and horror homage, Sos: Save Our Skins sends Ben and Stephen on a desperate journey to find their loved ones, escape the jaws of death and work out why they’re two of the few remaining people on Earth. But the answer to the mystery is bigger, crazier and more apocalyptic than they could ever have imagined, and it puts the fate of the planet into their very stupid hands.
“Sos: Save Our Skins is part road movie, part sci-fi fantasy, part buddy movie, and even has a twisted love story at its heart, even if one of the lovers is a mass-murderer,” said Director and Producer, Kent Sobey.
The film version of Sos: Save Our Skins premiered at the 39th Boston Sci-Fi Film Festival in February, where Sorespot Movies observed, “[it] does not hold back with the comedy or the wildness of the plot”. The film also screened at the International Horror and Sci-fi Film Festival in Phoenix and the Sci-Fi London Film Festival (April 24 – May 4, 2014). It will screen at the St. Tropez International Film Festival (May 12 – 16, 2014).
The film was produced in association with the Independent Production Fund and with the participation of BBC Worldwide in the UK, FEARnet in the U.S. and Blue Ant Media in Canada.

Tonight (Tuesday, April 22) sees that rarest of beasts get an outing on ITV4 - a British animated series aimed exclusively at adults.
Warren United - co-created by Men Behaving Badly's Simon Nye and featuring the voice of BAFTA winner Darren Boyd - is a new animated sitcom about family, football and the passion of being a fan.
"While Warren United focuses on a bloke who's crazy about football, it's really about passion," said co-executive producer Henry Normal. "Football's about human stories - we've tried to capture that."
The first of six Warren United episodes airs tonight at 9pm, but could the series be at the forefront of an animation revolution in the UK?
On April 1, a new tax break for the UK animation industry went into effect, with many predicting a boost for UK-based production - but will that be enough to reverse the long-floundering fortunes of adult animation in Great Britain?...

The BBC turned down a second series of Alan Partridge's Mid Morning Matters, Baby Cow co-founder Henry Normal has revealed.
Steve Coogan's iconic character was resurrected for the comedy, which consisted of a series of online shorts by Foster's in 2011 before finding a home at Sky Atlantic.
Speaking to The Guardian, Normal said of the series: "It was great to do something on the internet which was only 11 minutes long. We did some specials for Sky, which again gave it a different life.
"Steve wanted to do other things. You do get with Alan, if they are sitting in a room long enough, they do get 'Alan mad'. Alanageddon."
Normal explained that the production company had taken the idea for a second series to the BBC in 2012, but the channel turned it down before it was eventually picked up by Sky.

Baby Cow Productions co-founder Henry Normal says that Steve Coogan's iconic character Alan Partridge is set to return in both a film sequel and a new special for British broadcaster Sky.
Speaking at Advertising Week Europe, Normal says: "We are planning a sequel, yes, that will be great. We are also looking at doing more Mid Morning Matters and another Sky special, a little bit like Coast with Alan Partridge, except I don't think he goes out of Norfolk."
Coogan's character is a fictional presenter and basically sends up sports commentators and chat show presenters. He's starred in numerous radio and TV series and specials since the early 1990s.
Normal adds that writing has begun and the film aims to begin filming late in the Summer. The first film, entitled "Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa" in the U.K. and released the other week as just "Alan Partridge" in the United States,...

Warren United follows the fortunes of Warren Kinglsey, an overweight kitchen salesman and dedicated football fan. It will air on ITV.
Written by David Quantick and Dominic Holland, the show will feature the voices of Darren Boyd (Spy), Morgana Robinson (House of Fools), Morwenna Banks (Peppa Pig), Johnny Vegas and Eleanor Lawrence (Common Ground).
The production comes from Baby Cow (Uncle, Gavin and Stacey, Mighty Boosh and Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa) and Canadian animation house Smiley Guy.

Nick Helm's BBC Three comedy series Uncle has been given a second series.
The show's return was confirmed by the BBC following the conclusion of series one this evening (February 17).
"I am gobsmacked that I have finally been involved in something that people like enough to warrant the need for more of it," said Helm.
"I am looking forward to working with all the cast and crew again, as making the first series was genuinely one of the most fun experiences I've ever had whilst still legitimately being able to call it work."
Henry Normal, from Baby Cow Productions, said: "You have to give respect to the BBC for taking a leap of faith on this show. It's a brave and different commission for BBC Three comedy. Together we have an exceptional team in front and behind camera.
"I love this show. It's a comedy with heart and bite and truth.

Ahead of it’s debut this Sunday (November 17) at the St. Louis International Film Festival, The Weinstein Company has released a new featurette for their upcoming film Philomena.
The real-life characters, Philomena Lee and Martin Sixsmith, are played by two actors at the very summit of their respective careers: the legendary Oscar-winning actress Dame Judi Dench (Skyfall, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Shakespeare In Love) and Steve Coogan (The Look Of Love, 24 Hour Party People), one of Britain’s leading comics and creator of the legendary TV and radio ‘personality’ Alan Partridge.
Based on the 2009 investigative book by BBC correspondent Martin Sixsmith, The Lost Child of Philomena Lee, Philomena focuses on the efforts of Philomena Lee (Dench), mother to a boy conceived out of wedlock — something her Irish-Catholic community didn’t have the highest opinion of — and given away for adoption in the United States. He's the tabloid whipping boy turned angel of vengeance; the TV comedian who's gone serious with his new film Philomena. At 48, Steve Coogan's career is going full tilt. So why does he have a massive chip on his shoulder, with 'mushy peas and a boat of gravy on the side'? Xan Brooks finds out
One rainy Friday in October, Steve Coogan takes a trip from the Lake District to an expensive part of London. He rolls into town a man in transit, still half-dressed for the country with a yellow tweed cap pulled down round his ears. The car ferries us through sodden streets to a private members club, where a table is booked in an upstairs room. But the hostess is stricken; the place has standards. She won't let him in until he takes off the cap.

Starring Dame Judi Dench and Steve Coogan in the leading roles, Stephen Frears’ Philomena is due to have its world premiere out in Venice tomorrow, before setting sail across the Atlantic for its North American bow at Tiff.
Continuing its presence on the festival circuit, the BFI have now announced that Frears’ latest feature will be this year’s American Express Gala, having its UK premiere at the Odeon Leicester Square on 16th October.
Falling pregnant as a teenager in Ireland in 1952, Philomena was sent to the convent of Roscrea to be looked after as a “fallen woman”. When her baby was only a toddler, he was taken away by the nuns for adoption in America. Philomena spent the next fifty years searching for him but with no success.

If you need to know more about Alan Partridge than just the names Steve Coogan, and the insufferably under-appreciated Colm Meaney, well, I suppose I could offer up the fact that the film is a hit in the UK. Actually, I suppose if the first part didn’t work, the second isn’t any more likely to sway you.
Nevertheless, Magnolia is bringing you the movie, and you should thank them for doing it.

The distributor has set an early 2014 release for the UK comedy smash following a North American rights deal with StudioCanal.
Alan Partridge, based on Norfolk’s notorious fictitious broadcaster created by Steve Coogan some 20 years ago, will receive its North American premiere at the 2013 New York Film Festival.
The first feature outing for Partridge sees the gaffe-prone former BBC talk show host embroiled in a siege at a radio station involving a disgruntled former employee. Colm Meaney, Simon Greenall and Felicity Montagu also star.
Declan Lowney directed the Baby Cow/Studiocanal production from a screenplay by Rob Gibbons, Neil Gibbons, Coogan, Armando Iannucci and Peter Baynham.
Kevin Loader and Henry Normal produced and Rob Gibbons, Neil Gibbons, Iannucci, Danny Perkins, Joe Oppenheimer and Christine Langan served as executive producers.

Fox has one of its better slates coming your way with the new season, especially if you take the midseason shows into account. Some of these shows may not jump out at you now as must-see, but some of them are going to take over, if I’m any judge anyway.
Clear showcase offerings Dads, Almost Human, and Us & Them are guaranteed to take off early. Almost Human has J.J. Abrams recognition to pull people in, though it looks to be a show that could flounder after a few episodes, even if I hope it doesn’t. The other two are going to become hits. Unfortunately, we have to wait until mid-season for the Gavin & Stacey remake.
Rake also looks like a winner, as long as the translation can be made to work as an Americanized product, and the show actually delivers what made the Australian original so brilliant.
