The show must go on – until a strike is officially called. [Update — No strike!]
That was the word from inside TV’s late night talk shows and series, which continued to operate, business as usual, even as the possibility of a work stoppage on May 2 loomed large.
That has meant continuing to book guests, produce taped packages and plan for series road trips – all of which might not happen should the Writers Guild negotiating committee call for a strike.
“We’ll see what happens and take it from there,” said “The Late Late Show with James Corden” executive producer Ben Winston. ” We support the writers, we hope the strike doesn’t happen, because we want to carry on working and making a show. It’s concern for us. I think any decision on what we do, we’ll wait and hope it doesn’t happen and hope that everything works out.”

Odds And Sods: The cast of The Most Hated Woman In America answers life’s most existential questions
The new Netflix film The Most Hated Woman In America deals with some weighty and, at times, existential subject matter. It tells the story of Madalyn Murray O’Hair, an atheist activist who lobbied against the reading of the Bible in public schools and, in 1995, was kidnapped and murdered. At SXSW, we caught up with the team behind the film—Melissa Leo, Josh Lucas, Michael Chernus, and writer-director Tommy O’Haver—to see if they could answer some of life’s biggest questions.

Few actors can command the screen like Melissa Leo. She has cemented her status as a true scene stealing chameleon in films like The Fighter, Frozen River, Mildred Pierce, and The Big Short. And while she’s mostly regarded as a character, read supporting, actor, she gets a chance to show off her leading lady chops in The Most Hated Woman in America which debuts this week on Netflix. She plays atheist activist Madalyn Murray O’Hair who led a campaign that banned Bible readings in public schools.

The Most Hated Woman in America is a Netflix original movie that will premiere on March 24th. The film had it's premiere at SXSW just this past week and Cinelinx's Kelly McInerney had the chance to talk to Tommy O'Haver the writer and director of the film.
The Most Hated Woman in America is a true crime film based off of the actual story of Madalyn Murray O'Hair. Mrs. O'Hair founded the American Atheists in the 1960's, heavily assisted with keeping religion out of school and was one of the forerunners of the culture wars and separating church and state. The film is a biopic of her and how she and her family were kidnapped in the 1990's.
Tommy O'Haver has a well versed writing and directing career, having directed such films like 2004's Ella Enchanted and 2007's An American Crime. He doesn't really pay attention a specific genre when...

While introducing The Most Hated Woman in America at its SXSW world premiere, filmmaker Tommy O’Haver called his darkly satirical portrait of brazenly outspoken atheist activist Madalyn Murray O’Hair a “really sick and twisted” story.
Thanks to a tasty take-no-prisoners lead performance by Melissa Leo, it can also be a lot of fun, even if the Netflix original film’s dramatic dividends prove less satisfying.
A true-crime story surrounding the 1995 disappearance of the controversial American Atheists founder, who, along with her son and granddaughter, had abruptly gone missing from their Austin, Texas, home, the film wastes little time establishing who’s...

For a film to do justice to the life of America’s most famous atheist, Madalyn Murray O’Hair, it would need to be serious, salty, inspiring, rabble-rousing and not a little bit creepy. She was, after all, a victor in one of the most controversial Supreme Court Cases of the ’60s — ending compulsory Bible reading in public schools — as well as the founder of a movement of non-believers and, in the end, the victim of a most ignominious crime. Taking the sobriquet Life magazine once applied to her, director and co-writer Tommy O’Haver (“Ella Enchanted”) has named his biopic.

A militant defender of the 1st Amendment, Madalyn Murray O’Hair founded the American Atheists organization in 1963 after using her young son William as an opportunity to sue the Baltimore City Public School System, an effort that eventually reached the Supreme Court and effectively led to the end of mandatory Bible prayers in the nation’s education system. William, who now goes by the name Bill Murray, would grow up to become a Baptist minister — today, he serves as the chairman of the Religious Freedom Coalition, his life devoted to reversing the kind of secular progressivism that thrust his mother into the national spotlight.
Pulled taut between the disparate forces of fame and freedom, this is a uniquely American story that’s rich with relevant detail, tantalizingly sordid even before you get to the part where Madalyn is kidnapped from her Austin home in 1995, abducted alongside her underachieving son and Bill’s estranged daughter.

"Don't you know who I am?!" Netflix has debuted a trailer for a film titled The Most Hated Woman in America, which is also premiering at the SXSW Film Festival this month (like many other Netflix films). This tells the true story of the much debated rise and demise of a woman, named Madalyn Murray O'Hair, who was the founder of the "American Atheists" organization. She quickly became the "most hated woman in America", hence the title. Melissa Leo plays O'Hair, and the cast includes Juno Temple, Adam Scott, Josh Lucas, Vincent Kartheiser, Peter Fonda, Michael Chernus & Rory Cochrane. As interesting as this story seems, I'll watch it purely for Melissa Leo. She looks totally unrecognizable, always cool to see. Here's the first trailer for Tommy O'Haver's The Most Hated Woman in America, from YouTube: A true-crime biopic about the disappearance of Madalyn Murray O'Hair, founder of the "American...

The history of America’s transgression tied to the separation of church and state has never occurred without strong opposition. The Most Hated Woman in America, an upcoming crime biopic directed by Tommy O’Haver (An American Crime), centers around the disappearance of Madalyn Murray O’Hair, who founded American Atheists, and was a key figure in the political culture war. After winning the Supreme Court lawsuit in Murray v. Curlett, which ended official Bible readings in American public schools in 1963, she would become a target among many people and go down in history as… well, the title says it all.
Featuring Melissa Leo in the lead role, as well as a cast including Josh Lucas, Adam Scott, Vincent Kartheiser and Juno Temple, the first trailer has now landed ahead of a Netflix debut and SXSW premiere. Produced by Elizabeth Banks, it looks to be a complex, intense character study on a controversial figure.

Following the success of its “Making A Murderer” series, Netflix is doubling down on the American true crime genre with a film about prominent atheist activist who was kidnapped in 1995, Madalyn Murray O’Hair. Co-produced by Elizabeth Banks, the film tells the story of O’Hair’s career as the founder of the group American Atheists, her landmark 1963 Supreme Court case that ended Bible-reading in public schools, and her shocking kidnapping in 1995.

When she learned that her son was being forced to recite the Lord’s Prayer in school, O’Hair filed a lawsuit against the Baltimore Public School System. Murray v. Though the title seems like it was designed just to inspire as many hateful YouTube comments as possible (seriously, check them out), Netflix’s The Most Hated Woman In America is actually about Madalyn Murray O’Hair, the founder of the American Atheists organization and a woman who successfully fought for the Supreme Court to ban compulsory Bible reading in public schools. As indicated by the title, her work angered a lot of people, which eventually lead to a kidnapping that nobody seemed particularly interested in solving.
Netflix’s version of the story was directed by Tommy O’Haver, and it stars Melissa Leo, Josh Lucas, Adam Scott, Vincent Kartheiser, and Juno Temple. It’ll be available for streaming on March 24.

As Donald Trump has shown, it takes a particular brand of awfulness to really galvanize an entire nation (and citizens around the globe) against you. And while Madalyn Murray O’Hair didn’t quite attract the same level of vitriol, she definitely earned the title “The Most Hated Woman In America.”
Starring Melissa Leo, Josh Lucas, Adam Scott, Vincent Kartheiser and Juno Temple, and directed by Tommy O’Haver (“Ella Enchanted,” “An American Crime“), the film follows O’Hair who’s atheist activist put her right in the middle of the cultural conversation during the ’60s.

Peter Fonda is set for a leading role in Netflix's original film "The Most Hated Woman in America".
The film will deal with the true story of Madalyn O'Hair (played by Melissa Leo), the outspoken and overbearing founder of American Atheists who got the Supreme Court to overturn prayer in public schools. O'Hair later was kidnapped and murdered at the hand of what was believed to be two ex-cons.
Fonda will play Reverend Harrington, a con-artist preacher who partners with O'Hair to do a tour of revival meetings to prey on the God-fearing aspect of his followers.
Netflix is financing and Tommy O'Haver directs from a script he co-wrote with Irene Turner. Filming is slated to begin on Monday.

Another great lineup of midnight movies for the ‘Reel Late at The Tivoli’ for late July through early September. It’s a typically good variety of titles that will draw the late night movie buff crowd and a couple of retro surprises are to be found. The Midnight Movie experience has always catered to a college-age crowd and that’s the way it should be. When I was that age, in the early ’80s, midnight standards included A Clockwork Orange (1971), The Graduate (1967), Night Of The Living Dead (1968), King Of Hearts (1966), and Harold And Maude (1971). Those last two haven’t shown in many years. King Of Hearts especially seems to have fallen off the cult movie radar , so imagine my surprise when I saw that the Tivoli had Harold And Maude as part of their new line-up. That’ll be some old school midnight fun...

We've got our eye on another fairytale remake, with today's news that Cate Blanchett may be lending her signature ice-cold gaze to the part of Cinderella's evil stepmother in Disney's upcoming untitled project. According to The Wrap, the "Hobbit" star is the first in talks to join Mark Romanek's live-action rendition on the classic tale.
Before you roll your eyes at the thought of yet another take on happily ever after, consider the plot, which follows a doomed politically arranged marriage plot involving a prince and, of course, Cinderella. With Blanchett and Romanek on board, we're thinking this one won't involve pumpkin carriages and talking mice.
With that said, this won't be the first twist added to the preexisting cookie-cutter storyline—from the Muppets to gender role reversals, we break down some of the most unexpected and wacky twists we've seen in Cinderella's movie past.

Kevin Kline, Tom Selleck kiss, In & Out Following my Valentine's Day post featuring lots of male-female kisses and embraces (and a few shapely legs, bare breasts, and sensuous lips, courtesy of, respectively, Silvana Mangano, Clara Calamai, and Jane Russell), here's the gay/lesbian version. This Gay Kiss Montage post was originally published in June 2007, when Turner Classic Movies ran a couple of dozen films featuring gay/lesbian/bi/etc. characters as part of their Screened Out series. Created in late 2006 by Robert Eldredge, the video was inspired by the finale of Giuseppe Tornatore's Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award winner Cinema Paradiso, in which Jacques Perrin watches clips — kisses, hugs, embraces, nudity, sensuality, expressions of human desire — that, decades earlier, had been cut from the films screened at his Italian village's old movie house. The local Catholic priest had found those bits of celluloid harmful to the town's morals and family values.

Underrated actor and Claire Dances husband Hugh Dancy is set to reteam with his Ella Enchanted director Tommy O'Haver in an upcoming psychological thriller. Co-written by the helmer and scribe Kevin Turen, it follows an out of control, soon to be groom who has an affair right before his wedding. I've seen both Very Bad Things and Fatal Attraction enough times to know that was probably foolish decision making. Set in Hollywood, the film is called Spree, and it's being produced by Maya Entertainment. They'll handle the American box office publicity, but they're hoping to find an international partnership at the Cannes Film Festival that'll be willing to take the foreign distribution. Beyond Dancy's resumed partnership with Tommy O'Haver and the brief plot description, not much is known about Spree including how the hell it's a psychological thriller. It sounds like a dark comedy or maybe a drama from the...

Catherine Keener and Ellen Page will star in An American Crime, a gritty drama being directed by Tommy O'Haver. First Look Studios' Henry Winterstern and Kevin Turen are producing, in addition to Killer Films' Christine Vachon, Katie Roumel and Jocelyn Hayes-Simpson. The story, which O'Haver wrote with Irene Turner, tells the true story of Sylvia Likens, a 16-year-old girl who died in 1965 while under the care of a woman named Gertrude Baniszewski. She put Sylvia through an ordeal that included beatings in the guise of discipline, burnings with cigarettes and matches and scalding hot baths, among other tortures. Encouraging a Lord of the Flies-type cult, Baniszewski involved her own children and children from her Indianapolis neighborhood in the punishments. Keener is playing Baniszewski, while Page plays Likens.

The Walt Disney Co. has adopted J.T. Saladin's pitch Orphan's Club for Jane Startz and studio-based Beacon Entertainment to produce. The project revolves around an underground network of kids orphaned after the first World War, which produced more than 80 million orphans. The aim of the secret international organization is to prevent all future wars and, in turn, the creation of more orphans. The club follows highly structured rules outlined in the Orphan's Club Handbook. At the studio, the project is being shepherded by senior vp development and production Karen Glass along with director of development and production Karen Glass. Startz will produce along with Beacon topper Armyan Bernstein. Saladin is repped by the Gersh Agency. Startz, who recently pacted with Disney, filmmaker Lawrence Blume and author Judy Blume to develop and produce films based on Judy Blume books, produced the upcoming Ella Enchanted for director Tommy O'Haver and Miramax Films. Bernstein and his Beacon produced the upcoming Ladder 49 for Disney and are shepherding the romantic comedy A Lot Like Love, to star Ashton Kutcher and Amanda Peet.
