“Street Gang: How We Got to Sesame Street” has the good fortune to be arriving with about a hundred more built-in advantages than most documentaries. Offering up vintage backstage footage of Jim Henson and Frank Oz operating the Muppets feels a little like Henry Houdini coming back to reveal all his secrets. For parts of a nostalgically inclined audience, almost everything beyond that might be gravy. Yet that’s almost the least of the pleasures in a highly satisfying HBO documentary (premiering at the Sundance Film Festival) that wisely places roughly equal emphasis on how the sausage was made and how the culture was changed. It’s hard to ask for much more than a doc that captures creatives thoughtfully sneaking the civil revolution as well as basic education into children’s TV and includes a Muppets blooper reel.

What’s the magic formula that has made “Sesame Street” such an enduring hit? Midway through Marilyn Agrelo’s “Street Gang,” star Roscoe Orman offers a succinct answer: “serious intent and joy.” Initially conceived of as a then-revolutionary combination of children’s entertainment and educational instruction — literally inventing the idea of educational TV — “Sesame Street” has only maintained and expanded its lofty ambitions over the course of more than five decades. That success, Agrelo’s film sagely argues, was no accident, but instead the product of careful, considerate, and forward-thinking planning. It may be magic, but boy, does it take work.
While Agrelo’s documentary, based on Michael Davis’ similarly exhaustive nonfiction book of the same name, does occasionally nod to the price of that work, the film mostly tracks the story of what happens when a good idea is undertaken by good people. Many of those good people might...

"We've been knocked down before... Just gotta have a little faith." Netflix has unveiled an official trailer for another one of their holiday movies - this one titled Holiday Rush. The more of these holiday movies, the merrier! Right? Romany Malco stars as a popular radio DJ named Rush Williams, who loses his job just as his four spoiled kids hand over their Christmas lists. Through downsizing, the family starts to realize that having less could lead to more good than they ever imagined. Something we all need to think about these days anyway. The ensemble cast also features Deon Cole, Sonequa Martin-Green, Amarr M. Wooten, La La Anthony, Andrea-Marie Alphonse, Selena-Marie Alphonse, Alysia Livingston, Deysha Nelson, Roscoe Orman, Malika Samuel, as well as Tamala Jones and Darlene Love. Yes this looks super duper cheesy, but it has some good lessons for all of us. Just like every other holiday movie before it.

Here’s something I never expected to see: I ran to the blaxploitation attraction Willie Dynamite because I like actress Diana Sands, and it’s her last picture in a too-short career. But the main character on view, a gaudy fur-wearing pimp, is played by none other than Roscoe Orman, well known to a couple of generations of kids as none other than ‘Gordon’ in the long-running TV show Sesame Street. It’s like watching MisterRogers play Hannibal Lecter!

"I know what you've been looking for, I'm not stupid." Orion Pictures has released the first official trailer for an indie drama titled All These Small Moments, from first-time filmmaker Melissa Miller Costanzo, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year. Shot on the streets of New York City, the film is about a struggling family, and one teen boy who is infatuated with an older woman he notices on the bus. Described as an "absorbing coming-of-age tale with heartfelt, nuanced storytelling and genuine intimacy." All These Small Moments stars Brendan Meyer, with Jemima Kirke, Molly Ringwald, Harley Quinn Smith, Brian d'Arcy James, Salena Qureshi, and Roscoe Orman. At first glance, this reminds me of Noah Baumbach's The Squid and the Whale, about a dysfunctional NYC family and all the issues they have. Here's the first trailer (+ poster) for Melissa Miller Costanzo's All These Small Moments, on...

A review of The Night Of finale coming up just as soon as I forget my hat... "Who did it?" -Stone The Night Of was, in no particular order, a murder mystery; a legal procedural; a drama about the way the gears of the criminal justice system can grind on cop, criminal, and family member alike; a harrowing portrait of how a civilian survives behind bars; and a black comic character study of the low-rent attorney who finds himself in the middle of it all. These are not incompatible kinds of stories; you often see many of them comfortably overlapping in the same production (even if John Stone's eczema was unique to Criminal Justice and this remake). But as The Night Of moved along, it became clear that Price and Zaillian were better at — or simply more interested in — certain aspects than others, excelling whenever the focus was on...

When old-school fans of the iconic kid’s show Sesame Street learned that of three of the original cast members — Bob McGrath, Emilio Delgado and Roscoe Orman, aka Bob, Luis and Gordon — were being "let go," they clearly let their displeasure be known to the show’s producers.

People often throw around the all-too-melodramatic phrase “my childhood is ruined.” Now I’m not going to say that here, but I will say that the younger version of me is certainly more than a little disappointed to find out that Sesame Street has let go of three long-time show actors. Bob McGrath (“Bob”) Emilio Delgado (“Luis”), and Roscoe Orman (“Gordon”) have been fired from the Emmy-winning and legendary TV series. The 84-year-old McGrath broke the news while at Florida Supercon. And he sounded miffed about changes that have happened since HBO acquired the broadcast rights to the series. “As of this season, I have completed my 45th season this year,” McGrath said. “And the show has gone under a major turn around, going from an hour to a half-hour. Director Robert Mandel's F/X is one of the most entertaining and compulsively watchable thrillers of 1986. I originally caught up with it on VHS and, while I was impressed with the film, the ending I found to be both hokey and frustrating, mostly due to the completely out-of-place 1982 song “Just an Illusion” by Imagination that plays over the end credits. I felt that it undermined all that preceded it. However, like William Friedkin's To Live and Die in La (1985) and David Lynch's Blue Velvet (1986), F/X is a film that would only grow on me after subsequent repeated viewings. I learned to forgive the inclusion of this song as the final minutes should really be viewed as a visual pun on the film’s overall theme, which begs the question “What is real and what is fiction?”

What is it about some movies that no matter how badly scripted, acted, shot or directed they still possess a certain charm? We’ve all at some point, caught ourselves enjoying the visual equivalent of a Big Mac and Fries, gulping down every corny line, transfixed by ever dodgy special effect and blissfully ignoring the gaping plot holes.
Today, we take a look at some so bad they’re good movies that you’ve probably never seen, but definitely should take a look at.
5. Willie Dynamite (1973)
From the producers who brought you Jaws, The Sting and Driving Miss Daisy and the man who directed The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh comes this cinematic “classic.” Like the movie poster says, “Ain’t no one crosses Willie D. He’s tight, he’s together, and he’s mean. Chicks, Chumps, he uses them all. He’s got to be number-One.”

There is a fine line between stereo-typing and the honest portrayal of criminals in cinema. Films such as Public Enemy (1931), Goodfellas, and both versions of Scarface (1932 and 1983) are examples of films both under attack and praised for its portrayal of criminals. Brian De Palma’s version of Scarface especially divides audiences and critics as to whether the character of Cuban import Tony Montana is a racial caricature or an honest look at greed and corruption. Blaxploitation cinema’s portrayal of criminals is no different drawing criticism from the African-American community, especially Rev. Jesse Jackson and the NAACP. The pimps and drug pushers in Blaxploitation cinema are considered just the same, walking the line of stereo-type and being socially conscious.

Sesame Street's producers have launched a search for one of the original stars from their pilot episode. A clip from the Children's Television Workshop pilot from 1969 has surfaced featuring Bob McGrath, Loretta Long and an unknown actor in the role of Gordon. When the children's series finally went to air, Gordon was played by Matt Robinson. Hal Miller replaced Robinson in season three and Roscoe Orman has held the role since season six. However, producers have been unable to identify the original Gordon pilot actor and have requested help from anyone who can shed light on his identity. Sesame Street has handled a lot of tricky tasks over the past 42 years, from teaching tykes the alphabet to explaining television to Keith Staskiewicz, but nothing quite like this before. Today’s Sesame Street PopWatch is brought to you by the letter M, for the Missing original Gordon.
In an open letter on their website, the Sesame Workshop explains that they’ve been on the hunt for an actor who played Gordon in an un-aired test pilot that was shown to a focus group of children in the summer of 1969. While all of the other Gordons (played by Matt Robinson,...

Sesame Street bosses are searching for their original Gordon.
Producers of the longrunning kids show have asked fans for help in tracking down the unnamed actor who played teacher Gordon Robinson in the programme's 1969 test pilot.
A post on the Sesame Street website, accompanied by footage of the mystery man, reads, "We don't know who he is, and we'd like to figure it out. We've tried everything short of asking the internet, and come up empty. So we're asking you for help."

The stars of longrunning children's show Sesame Street are campaigning against plans to cut spending on public broadcasting amid fears it will affect funding for the programme.
Emilio Delgado, who portrays Luis, and Roscoe Orman (Gordon) were among the actors who turned up at Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday to march in protest after Congress officials announced plans to cut the broadcasting budget, which totalled $420 million (£280 million) last year.
The Sesame Street stars, who also include Alison Bartlett O'Reilly (Gina), Alan Muraoka (Alan) and Bob McGrath (Bob), fear the decision will affect children's education if the show is hit by the spending review.
The actors appeared at the iconic landmark as part of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, to sign a petition asking for the Senate to rethink the plans, reports the Associated Press.
More than 1.2 million signatures are on the petition.

From "Sesame Street" to Capital Hill, the real life actors behind the hit PBS children's program are getting involved and fighting proposed federal spending cuts to public broadcasting.
The AP reports that Emilio Delgado (Luis,) Roscoe Orman (Gordon) and Bob McGrath (Bob) took to our nation's capital joining unions and activist groups in protest. Alan Muraoka (Alan) and Alison Bartlett O'Reilly (Gina) were also present as members of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists.
On Tuesday (Mar. 15) the actors delivered petitions asking the Senate to fully fund PBS. The House has voted to end over $400 million in spending that would fund the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which produces programming such as Sesame Street.
As Babble points out, those classic "money-making machines" such as Elmo could survive budget cuts, but the daily access millions of kids' have to programming would change eventually. ...
