Andrew Slater’s music documentary Echo in the Canyon has been set as the opening night film of Film Independent’s 2018 La Film Festival, which kicks off Sept. 20 and continues through Sept. 28.
This will mark the world premiere of the documentary which puts the spotlight on iconic music groups The Byrds, The Beach Boys, Buffalo Springfield, and The Mamas & the Papas and how they birthed the beginnings of Laurel Canyon historic music scene. The docu shows how the echo of these artists’ creations reverberated between each other and ultimately across the world with a timelessness that continues today. The film also features appearances by Tom Petty, Brian Wilson, Stephen Stills, David Crosby, Graham Nash, Michelle Phillips, Jackson Browne, Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, Roger McGuinn, John Sebastian, Lou Adler, Jakob Dylan, Norah Jones, Beck, Regina Spektor, Cat Power, and others. The Asmr genre has grown from a YouTube curiosity to a full-blown industry, with whispery creators bringing their soothing sounds to the worlds of art, video games, and more. With so much Asmr content now available on YouTube, it can be hard for newcomers to the space to find a niche -- but Rhino Stew has found a fun way to break in. The production company, which describes its work as “high quality eclectic entertainment," released a short film that gives the Asmr treatment to a bank robbery scenario.

May 2017 is going to give genre fans plenty of reasons to stay home this month, as we have a lot of cool titles to look forward to. The month kicks off with Even Lambs Have Teeth on May 2nd, and just a few days later, Take Me (the latest from Pat Healy) and the horror comedy Another Evil make their digital debuts. Jordan Peele’s Get Out makes its digital bow on May 9th before hitting VOD platforms just a few weeks later, and the Australian thriller Hounds of Love gets released on May 12th. And, for those of you who might have missed it in theaters, A Cure for Wellness arrives on Digital HD at the end of the month, too.
