Post-pandemic audiences are much more open to different cultures, thanks to streaming and exposure to new types of content, but some of the world’s biggest film industries are still figuring out how to adapt in a rapidly changing landscape, said speakers on the ‘Cinematic Crossovers’ panel in Red Sea Souk.
Leading producers from three industries with an international footprint – Woo-sik Seo from Korea’s Barunson C&c, a subsidiary of Barunson E&a (Parasite), Dheer Momaya from India’s Jugaad Motion Pictures (Last Film Show) and Jadesola Osiberu, founder of Nigeria’s Greoh Studios (Gangs Of Lagos) – compared their business and funding models with the old world system set up by France’s Cnc and the nascent film industry in Saudi Arabia.
But they concluded by saying that, despite their success in achieving global impact, the current systems face some challenges – particularly in terms of censorship and IP ownership.

Pan Nalin, producer and director of Indian Oscar-shortlisted film “Last Film Show,” has boarded Subhadra Mahajan’s debut feature “Second Chance” as an executive producer.
Mahajan previously served as assistant director on Nalin’s “Echo of Eco,” “Angry Indian Goddesses,” “Beyond the Known World” and “Last Film Show.”
“Second Chance,” now in the final stages of post-production, was launched at India’s Film Bazaar co-production market in 2020, and has participated in labs and development programs including Film Independent Global Media Makers Program 2022, the Cannes market co-production day 2021 and Produire Au Sud Kolkata.
The film follows city girl Nia who visits her family home in the western Himalayas after a decade, in the dead of winter, alone. An illicit abortion paired with a stinging abandonment has broken her spirit. The well-known saying, “if you love someone, set them free,” takes on deeper significance in Pan Nalin’s Last Film Show. This film serves as a heartfelt tribute to celluloid as a living, breathing entity. The character portrayed by actress Richa Meena embodies not just nurturing but also the recognition that she must allow her child to find his own path to happiness—a challenging task to self-impose when your child is not even in the double digits in age. Meena’s character takes on the role of cooking with meticulous and purposeful care, reflecting her artistic nature. It becomes evident that her son, Samay, is an extension of her very purpose for being.…...

It’s not uncommon for seasoned filmmakers to, at some point, turn their lens towards their own love for cinema. Steven Spielberg recently treated us to The Fablemans and in the same year, Pan Nalin delves into his personal narrative to gift us Last Film Show, a tale about the essence of life in cinema and life through cinema. The heartwarming story unfolds in a rural corner of India, where traditional movie theaters are becoming scarce. It centers on a young boy named Samay (reminiscent of François Truffaut’s The Wild Child), who, despite lacking the means, is determined to create cinema of his own.…...

Two movies which come in on immigration from vastly different angles – Laura Ferrés’ “The Permanent Picture” and Ken Loach’s “The Old Oak” – won big Saturday night at Spain’s Valladolid Festival, walking off with its main competition Golden Spike and the Spanish event’s best actor (Dave Turner) and Audience Award plaudits respectively.
The prize ceremony also saw Charlotte Rampling, star of closing film “Juniper” from Matthew J. Saville, accept an enthusiastically applauded Honorific Spike for her career achievement.
Though decided upon by independent juries, Valladolid’s prizes say much about the new-fit festival after a first-year reboot by new director José Luis Cienfuegos, previously a Gijón and Seville fest head.
Under directors Fernando Lara (1984-2004), Juan Carlos Frugone (2005-08) and Javier Angulo (2009-2022), Valladolid has consolidated as one of Spain’s biggest festivals, after San Sebastián. and a bastion of auteurist, arthouse independent cinema. Few figures in Europe...

Watching The Fabelmans takes you back to India’s official entry to Oscars – Pan Nalin’s ‘Chhello Show’, which is alleged to be similar to ‘Cinema Paradiso’. Chhello Show tells the story of a 9-year-old kid Samay. His parents take him for his maiden movie experience that gets him absolutely mesmerized by films and filmmaking, to the point that he decides to become a filmmaker, unaware of the heart-breaking times that await him. Samay leaves his parents and moves with his uncle to pursue his passion for films like Samuel Fabelman whose parents separate, his heart is broken but life goes on.
The Fabelmans is a coming-of-age family drama directed by Steven Spielberg, who co-wrote it with Tony Kushner. On Jan. 24, India had three reasons to celebrate: an original song Oscar nomination for “Naatu Naatu,” the showstopping tune featured in the film Rrr; a documentary feature nom for All That Breathes; and a documentary short nom for The Elephant Whisperers — a respectable showing for a country that takes great pride in its cinematic output. But if leaders of the nation’s film industry had played their cards differently a few months earlier when deciding which film should represent India in the best international feature Oscar competition, there could have been even more cause for celebration.
For that Oscar category, a country can submit only one title. There are no exceptions for countries with vibrant film industries that produce multiple worthy candidates each year because, as it is, Academy members who volunteer to evaluate the submissions barely have time to consider that many. Indeed, 92 countries and regions entered a title this season.

In the past 55 years in which India has been sending entries for the Best International Feature Film Oscar, it has been on just three occasions that the selected movies, despite some of them being critically acclaimed both in India and abroad, have made it to the nominations shortlist.
A dismal record, if any, calling in question the selection process.
The three films on this rather bald list are the Nargis-Sunil Dutt classic “Mother India” (1957), Mira Nair’s “Salaam Bombay” (1988) and Ashutosh Gowarikar’s Aamir Khan-starrer “Lagaan” (2001).
This year, the official selection — “Chhello Show”, Nalin Kumar Pandya aka Pan Nalin’s Gujarati film — again lost out to a strong field comprising, among others, the German World War I drama “All Quiet on the Western Front” and the Golden Globe winner, “Argentina, 1985” (the historical drama from Argentina around the fight waged by a group of lawyers against the South American’s...

Directed by Pan Nalin, ‘Chhello Show’ is a Gujarati-language coming-of-age drama about a nine-year-old boy, Samay (Bhavin Rabari), who’s ensnared by the magic of cinema and sets forth to fulfil his 35mm celluloid dreams.

As was the tendency in the last years, South Indian films continued to dominate the box office in 2022, with “Rrr” and “Vikram” being some of the highlights, and the former actually getting international recognition, as the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song for Naatu Naatu highlights. In another international success for Indian cinema, Pan Nalin’s “Last Film Show” was shortlisted for the Oscars in the Best International Feature Film category, while Pan Nalin documentary “All That Breathes” won the Grand Jury Prize in World Cinema Documentary Competition in Sundance, before it was also shortlisted for Best Documentary Feature for the 95th Academy Awards. If you add to all these the fact that local movies seem to find more space in international festivals, it seems that finally Indian movies are getting the recognition they deserve. The feat can be attributed to both an “opening” from the West towards...

Legal docudrama Saint Omer was voted Best Picture at the 34th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival, which announced this year’s juried award winners today.
Saint Omer wins for its ability “to expertly interrogate issues of society, culture, race, and gender,” the festival release stated. “Alice Diop, as screenwriter and director, delivers a film that explores different dynamics of Black women in contemporary France, drawing empathetic lead performances from Kayije Kagame and Guslagie Malanga. By harnessing the skills of her technical team, Diop turns Saint Omer into a shrewd, cogent, ambitious, and overwhelming film which teases a metafictional awareness while remaining clear-eyed and unsentimental.”
The Palm Springs festival took place from January 5-16 and screened 134 films from 64 countries, including 27 premieres. The lineup includes 35 of the International Feature Film Oscar submissions.

Making a movie almost always means coming up against unforeseen challenges and figuring out how to work around them, but it's pretty rare that someone has to smuggle a prosthetic penis across international borders for the sake of cinema. The Iranian serial killer thriller "Holy Spider" faced a few difficulties in telling a brutally honest story about the dangers faced by women in the nation that feels even more horrifyingly relevant in the wake of the surge of protests in response to the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini while in the custody of the nation's morality police.
Director and co-writer Ali Abbasi knew that he wouldn't be able to film the movie in Iran, given the nation's strict decency laws, and they ended up settling on filming in Jordan, but there were still some concerns that wouldn't occur to filmmakers in Hollywood. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Abbasi...

The Hollywood Reporter’s first panel of international directors at this year’s Palm Springs Film Festival features movies with atypical lead actors. Jerzy Skolimowski’s Eo, starring several camera-ready Sardinian donkeys, stands out as perhaps the most unlikely casting choice. Projects such as Pan Nalin’s The Last Film Show and Colm Bairéad’s The Quiet Girl both feature young child actors in lead roles, which necessitated extensive nationwide talent scouting and rigid scheduling to accommodate child labor laws.
The breadth of different tones and kinds of stories included in these Oscar-shortlisted international films is evidenced by the varying genres represented on the panel: Tarik Saleh’s Cairo Conspiracy is a thriller centering around the eponymous Egyptian city’s religious and political elites. Joyland, Saim Sadiq’s feature debut, is a family drama that tackles issues of gender, sexuality and lineage. And Ali Abbasi’s Holy Spider is based...

Friends for more than 20 years, “Rrr” stars N.T. Rama Rao Jr and Ram Charan say they relied on each another for the extensive shoot of S.S. Rajamouli’s Indian-Tollywood epic, which has taken global cinemas by storm.
On this episode of the Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, the two actors celebrate the phenomenon of “Rrr” and discuss the grueling shoot that took over three years. They describe what it was like to be suspended in harnesses, and the experience of learning and synchronize the film’s signature (and now Golden Globe-winning) song “Naatu Naatu.” Listen below:
The three-hour action epic “Rrr” follows two patriotic but philosophically opposed men (Ram Charan and N.T. Rama Rao Jr.) who team up to rescue a girl from British colonial officials in 1920s Delhi.

“It was exciting news when India chose to send us as an entry,” says director Pan Nalin, whose movie “Last Film Show” was chosen to represent his country at the 95th Academy Awards. It has since been shortlisted as one of 15 potential nominees for Best International Feature. “We make thousands of movies in India. There are all kinds of films with big studios and streamers.” Watch our video interview above.
“Last Film Show” tells the story of nine-year-old Samay (Bhavin Rabari), a young boy who falls in love with the art of filmmaking. He befriends a film projectionist and trades him his lunch to watch movies for free. Samay realizes that in order to pursue his dream, he must leave his small village and everything he loves. Nalin, who wrote the script as well, based portions of Samay’s life experiences on his own.

Don’t crank up “Naatu Naatu” and celebrate just yet: “Rrr” did not triumph as was expected at the Golden Globes, with the award for Best Motion Picture in a Non-English Language at Tuesday’s ceremony instead going to “Argentina, 1985.”
The Amazon Studios film, directed by Santiago Mitre, beat out some of the most acclaimed films of the year to take home the Globe, including S.S. Rajamouli’s Indian smash hit “Rrr,” which won Best Song earlier in the evening; Park Chan-wook’s romantic thriller “Decision to Leave”; German war film “All Quiet on the Western Front”; and Belgian coming-of-age story “Close.”
The win would have made “Rrr,” a historical action musical epic from director Rajamouli, the first ever film solely produced in India to win in the Golden Globe category. In 1983, “Gandhi” won the award (when it was called Best Foreign Film), but that film was a co-production between the United Kingdom and India,...

Exclusive: Shochiku has acquired Pan Nalin’s Last Film Show (Chhello Show) for Japan and has set a theatrical release on January 20. Last Film Show is among the 15 films shortlisted for International Feature Oscar and the first Indian title to make the cut in 21 years.
The Gujarati-language movie is a semi-autobiographical drama that pays homage to the cinema of the past — a reminder of childhood innocence and the universal magic of the movies. It follows Samay, a 9-year-old boy living with his family in a remote village in India who discovers films for the first time and is absolutely mesmerized.
Last Film Show made its World Premiere as the Opening Film of Spotlight at Tribeca and has had a strong festival career, winning such prizes as Best Picture at Spain’s Valladolid, Audience Favorite at Mill Valley and the Los Angeles Asian World Film Festival’s Snow Leopard for Best Picture.

The shortlisting of the ‘Naatu Naatu’ song picturised on Ram Charan and Jr Ntr from ‘Rrr’ for the Oscar in the best original song category has come as another major achievement for S S Rajamouli’s epic adventure film.

Also, on the shortlists are ‘Chhello Show’ (The Last Show), the Gujarati film by Pan Nalin selected as India’s official entry for the Oscars, in the best international feature category, and Shaunak Sen’s documentary, ‘All That Breathes’, which won an award at Cannes earlier this year.
Being on Oscar shortlists, which are released in phases, is not the same as a nomination.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today revealed the 15-film shortlist of movies that will advance to the nominations process for the Best International Feature Film Oscar. While there were no jarring snubs on AMPAS’ shortlist, one film we weren’t sure about making the cut is India’s submission, Last Film Show, which did make it. This is the first time that India has been shortlisted since Lagaan was nominated 20 years ago. Along with Pan Nalin’s Last Film Show, a testament to the whole of the Indian market is that another movie, Rrr, has been recognized by U.

There are lots of questions surrounding the Oscars shortlist voting that has now concluded in seven different categories, and will take place in sound, visual effects and makeup on Saturday. For instance: Can Diane Warren remain in the race for another Best Original Song nomination for a song from a movie that almost nobody has seen, “Tell It Like a Woman?” How many showbiz documentaries can advance to that shortlist? Will the insanely over-the-top visual effects of “Rrr” make it the first Indian film to advance in that race?
But mostly, I’m wondering how this year’s new rules will impact the Best International Feature Film category and its 15-film shortlist, which will be announced on Dec. 21 along with all the other lists.

India has been nominated for Oscar’s international-film award three times — impressive, until you consider that the country makes about 1,600 movies a year. Aside from scattered nominations and wins, the country has largely been ignored by Academy voters. But that may change this year.
India is banking on two excellent narrative films, “Last Film Show” and “Rrr,” plus Shaunak Sen’s “All That Breathes,” an eco-conscious docu about two Delhi brothers rescuing birds S.S. Rajamouli was tapped as the year’s top director by the N.Y. Film Critics for “Rrr” and the film scored two Golden Globe noms. “Last Film” earned a best picture prize at the Asian World Film Festival. And “Breathes” recently led the awards at the Intl. Documentary Assn. handouts, with four wins.

Despite being snubbed as India’s international feature at the upcoming 2023 Oscars, “Rrr” picked up two nominations from the Golden Globes on Monday.
Directed by S.S. Rajamouli, the three-hour action-musical epic was nominated for best non-English language film and original song for the track “Naatu Naatu,” written by Kala Bhairava, M. M. Keeravani and Rahul Sipligunj.
The film is coming off a strong start to its awards season run after winning best director at the New York Film Critics Circle for Rajamouli. This past weekend at the L.A. Film Critics Assn. Samay, the 9-year-old spitfire at the center of Last Film Show, is a pintsize wheeler-dealer, a wily old soul and a bit of a mechanical genius. As in another recently arrived film, The Fabelmans, this young protagonist’s obsession with the big screen begins with a family trip to the local theater (Spielberg’s name is one of many in the pantheon that writer-director Pan Nalin invokes at the beginning and end of his feature). But for rural kid Samay, owning his very own camera is not an option as it is for suburbanite Sammy Fabelman. With impressive ingenuity, he finds another way to make movies.
Set in 2010, as the art of 35mm projection is about to be made obsolete by the advent of digital, India’s official submission to the Academy Awards is a kid’s-eye-view story that never condescends. Alive with movie love,...

‘Live Action Shorts Showcase’ Directors on Breaking Harmful Hollywood Clichés Through Representation
Despite the wide range of topics shorts directors Verónica Echegui, Vanessa Beletic, Brianna Devons and actor Lamar Usher bring to the table through stories of dance, resilience and acting, the group shares a common goal of breaking tired Hollywood clichés by adding voices of authenticity to the existing narratives.
“Hollywood has done a great disservice to the Haitian community,” Beletic told TheWrap during the “Live Action Shorts Showcase” for the 2022-2023 Awards Season Screening Series. “Anytime Haiti comes up in any conversation, when it comes to cinema, we think of voodoo, which has been co opted and used and bastardized and turned into something that’s like, demonic and scary. I’m not an expert in that space, but I do feel a sense of responsibility to help destigmatize my people in any way that I can.”

Director Meg Smaker’s feature-length debut, the intense documentary “The UnRedacted” (formerly known as “Jihad Rehab”), chronicles the plight of Guantanamo detainees undergoing a longterm program of de-radicalization in Saudi Arabia.
Speaking with “The Perfect Storm” author Sebastian Junger at a lively Awards Season Screening Series Q&a at New York City’s Village East Cinema on Sept. 6, Smaker explained that her desire to tell these detainees’ stories came after she experienced a shift in the attitudes of her fellow firefighters after 9/11.
“Before 9/11, my firehouse was a place of love and support and family, and the day after, it became a place of hatred and rage and bigotry,” says Smaker. “And nothing that I saw in mainstream media answered any of the questions generated from the day. The only way I could think about that was to go to Afghanistan on my own.”

After winning the 1998 Thalberg Award, Norman Jewison told the press backstage: “The broader the Academy reaches for artistic excellence in filmmaking, the more important it becomes. Hollywood can’t isolate itself. We’re not the only talented people in the world.”
It’s taken a long time, but Academy voters and the U.S. film industry are heeding Jewison’s advice.
This year, dozens of countries have submitted entries for the international film competition. A few of them have gone beyond that, looking for (deserved) recognition in other races.
That includes several international film entries, such as Austria’s “Corsage”; Belgium’s “Close”; Cambodia’s “Return to Seoul”; Denmark’s “Holy Spider”; Germany’s “All Quiet on the Western Front”; India’s “The Last Film Show”; Mexico’s “Bardo: False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths”; Poland’s “Eo”; and South Korea’s “Decision to Leave.”

Pan Nalin, writer and director of “Last Film Show,” India’s official submission for the Best International Feature Oscar, turned to his own childhood growing in the Adtala village in Saurashtra for inspiration for the semi-autobiographical film.
Centered on 9-year-old Samay (Bhavin Rabari), “Last Film Show” details a summer spent watching films in the projection booth of a rundown movie palace, falling in love with the art of filmmaking and changing the course of his entire life.
Imagine Nalin’s surprise seeing a similar story unfold in another semi-autobiographical awards contender this year, Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans.”
