The real Bonnie and Clyde may have died in 1933, but the legend of the couple's crime spree lives on in the form of songs, stories, and one groundbreaking movie. Arthur Penn's "Bonnie and Clyde" took Hollywood by storm when it hit theaters in 1967, generating controversy for its on-screen violence and sensuality -- and kick-starting nationwide conversations about who deserves to be the subject of a movie. While film fans still talk about these topics today, the movie's brutal final shootout feels mild compared to modern blood-soaked movie scenes.
Still, "Bonnie and Clyde" is a fantastic film, thanks in large part to its great cast. Warren Beatty plays cocky Clyde Barrow to Faye Dunaway's initially innocent Bonnie Parker, while actors Michael J. Pollard, Gene Hackman, and Estelle Parsons round out the Barrow gang. A young Gene Wilder made his big screen debut as one of Clyde's hostages, while Denver...

Some classic rock songs are better the second time around. Cher released “Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)” as an uptempo song, but Nancy Sinatra’s ballad cover became more iconic. Sinatra discussed the movie that revived her cover.
Nancy Sinatra wanted to flip Cher’s ‘Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)’ on its head
During a 2013 interview with Vice, Sinatra was asked if she ever covered songs to improve them. “I don’t know that I had that in mind, but I think sometimes I did do it better than the original,” he said. “Like ‘Bang Bang.’ And no offense to Cher, because her record is great and it sold millions of copies. But I like turning a song around and really hearing what the lyric says.”
A journalist said Sinatra’s version of the tune emphasized its darkness. “Another thing I like to do is take...

It’s no coincidence that Johnny & Clyde sounds a lot like Bonnie and Clyde. Helping to usher in a new level of violence in mainstream film Arthur Penn’s film is one of the most influential and imitated films of its time. One can draw a line from Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker to Mickey and Mallory Knox, Oliver Stone’s Natural Born Killers. 1967’s Bonnie and Clyde is considered one of the seminal American films. Known for its provocative use of graphic violence, it helped bring U.S. films closer in line with what was being done in Europe and is one of the films responsible for the MPAA starting a new rating system. It was so controversial that for a while, its home studio, Warner Bros, deemed it unreleasable and initially dumped it in a regional release, only for the film to become a favorite of the sixties counterculture, leading to its eventual wide release. While eventually an iconic hit that launched Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway as superstars, not much attention has been paid over the years to how truthful it was about the two gangsters it idolizes, Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow. Were they romantic anti-heroes, as the film portrays them, or were they murderous bandits?

The Depression era crime spree of Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker has become the stuff of legend. The notorious couple made headlines by stealing money when the rest of America was struggling to survive with sporadic jobs and meager earnings. Bonnie and Clyde became Robin Hood figures in the press, heroes that stood up to "the man" by stealing back what had been taken from the public. Decades before the introduction of the 24-hour news cycle, the controversial Bonnie and Clyde became one of the most infamous and celebrated criminal couples in history.
The image of two outlaws, barely out of their teenage years, robbing banks and riding off into the sunset is an intoxicating one. The myth around the notorious couple has been immortalized in countless works of art, including a 1967 film directed by Arthur Penn. Instead of depicting the couple as heroic figures out to avenge the poor,...

After Bonnie Parker and Joan Crawford, Faye Dunaway's most famous role is arguably sociopathic TV producer Diana Christensen in "Network." The youngest of the film's leads, Diana personifies the generation "raised on TV." Her ambition to bump up the ratings of the Ubs network sees her put the mentally ill Howard Beale (Peter Finch) on TV, then arrange to have him assassinated once his ratings falter. She ruins her relationship with fellow producer Max Schumacher (William Holden) along the way.
"Network" is famous for its verbose dialogue, scripted by screenwriter/satirist seer Paddy Chayefsky. From Beale's "I'm as mad as hell and I'm not gonna take this anymore!" or the towering Arthur Jensen's (Ned Beatty) "You have meddled with the primal forces of nature!," many of the film's monologues have become deservedly famous. However, Dunaway apparently had the hardest time of the film's leads wrapping her brain around Chayefsky's words.

Laura Osnes, who received a Tony Award nomination for her performance as Bonnie Parker in the 2011 Broadway musical Bonnie & Clyde, has been replaced by West End actor Frances Mayli McCann in London’s nearly sold-out upcoming Bonnie & Clyde In Concert event that was intended to reteam Osnes with her original Clyde, actor Jeremy Jordan.
Producer Fourth Wall Live announced the new casting in a statement today but didn’t disclose the reason for the replacement, noting only that “The previously announced Laura Osnes is no longer performing in Bonnie and Clyde in Concert.”
Osnes made news several months ago when she departed the upcoming Disney Princess – The Concert tour after declining to comply with the production’s Covid-19 vaccine mandate for performers. In an August message on Instagram, Osnes defended her vaccine refusal by saying, “I stand by the decision my husband and I, with input from our physician,...

Photo: 'The Highwaymen'/Netflix It’s been a long time since Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow went on a killing rampage, driving all across the country, evading the law. Even after they were murdered in 1934 by the cops, they went on to live forever through pop culture. They were icons, so much so that a movie was released about them 37 years later. Bonnie and Clyde (1967), starring Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway, is now regarded as a classic film. The movie romanticized the two outlaws, portraying them as a good-looking couple who were deeply in love, rather than monsters who went on a crime spree just for the thrill of it. 'The Highwaymen' (2019) is essentially a protest of that movie. Instead of telling the story of Bonnie and Clyde, it tells the story of Frank Hamer (Kevin Costner) and Maney Gault (Woody Harrelson), the two Texas Rangers...

This year marks a unique Thanksgiving, to be sure. With the pandemic carrying on, families and loved ones across the United States are testing out new ways to celebrate a national holiday that might be best described as food, football, and then, of course, more food. For some that means outdoor gatherings are the order of the day; for others it will mean the first time you might be cutting turkey while wearing a mask.
However you might wish to celebrate the holiday though, gathering with loved ones around a movie never goes out of style. For that reason, we’ve gathered the best Thanksgiving movies to choose from. Some of these films are truly beloved holiday classics, and others might be less obviously about Thanksgiving, even as they wear their affection for the holiday on their sleeves. And yet others still will offer the rare respite: a streak of...

François Truffaut was a revered member of the French New Wave, but few people know about the filmmaker’s longtime friend and colleague, Helen Scott. Serge Toubiana, the president of Unifrance and the former director of the Cinematheque Française, aims to change that with his new book. “The American Friend,” which will be published by Albertine Books in March 2020, tracks the life of Scott in New York and Paris as the writer and translator played a key role in Truffaut’s career.
At one point, that included her insistence that Truffaut direct “Bonnie and Clyde” at the height of his popularity. While Arthur Penn eventually directed the seminal 1967 film, the history of Truffaut’s involvement in the project is retold in this exclusive excerpt — entitled “The Bonnie and Clyde Hypothesis” — from Toubiana’s book, translated into English for IndieWire.

“There was a saying: ‘The blues had a baby and they called it rock & roll.’ I always say, ‘Yeah, and I think the daddy was a hillbilly.” That’s Country Music Hall of Fame member Bobby Braddock, writer of songs including “He Stopped Loving Her Today,” on the genesis of rock music. He makes the case that its birth, near the end of the first half of the 20th century, was as influenced by country music as it was the blues.

In 1934, Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker drove into an ambush in Bienville Parish, Louisiana. They had come there with the intent of laying low while visiting fellow gang member Henry Methvin’s family home. A number of policemen — and two Texas Rangers — opened fire on them as their stolen car sped down a country road. We know that, by the time they were taken down, the duo had been on a two-year-long crime wave. We know that they had become folk heroes, worshipped by a public who viewed them as...

Making a film about the ex-Texas Rangers who took down Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow on a Louisiana backroad feels so misguided given its inherently incongruent to the subversive nature of Arthur Penn’s seminal film about these outlaws. The groundbreaking “Bonnie and Clyde” was a molotov cocktail to the middle of the studio system in 1967, and its exploration of that blurry lines between sex and violence, the sexual self-denials that leads human beings to satisfy their urges elsewhere, was truly revolutionary and confrontational at the time.

The legacy of Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow has been so tied to Arthur Penn’s 1967 movie that it’s often mistaken as an authoritative account. But the robbers weren’t the only players in the sprawling legacy of Depression-era bank robbers who faced death in a hail of bullets after years on the run. The gory death scene at the end of Penn’s movie comes at the hands of a supporting player on the killer couple’s trail, but “The Highwaymen” flips the equation: As grizzled Texas Rangers Frank Hamer (Kevin Costner) and Maney Gault (Woody Harrelson) roam dusty southern roads on the outlaws’ trail, Bonnie and Clyde remain faceless monsters whose entire presence exists to fuel the men determined to take them down.
The saga of Hamer and Gault is such a natural alternative to this seminal American myth that it’s a wonder it took more...

There’s a scene in director John Lee Hancock’s film “The Highwaymen” which chronicles the astounding multi-city hunt for the infamous criminals Bonnie Parker (Emily Probst) and Clyde Barrow (Edward Bossert) by detectives Frank Hamer (Kevin Costner) and Maney Gault (Woody Harrelson), that perfectly defines the story. It’s when Frank and Maney, semi-retired rangers recruited back on the scene for the high-profile case, stop inside a quaint home where they think their targets might be only to find a quintessential pencil dress and blue suit worn throughout the Great Depression hanging in the closet. “They were playing house,” Frank says.
It’s an important line because, though Frank is referring to Bonnie and Clyde’s bizarrely romantic relationship, it highlights the fact that everything about the main characters in “The Highwaymen” hinges on identity and perception. Frank is a man of a certain age who’s gotten comfortable...

There hasn’t been a Bonnie and Clyde movie made since Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway’s classic 1967 film. I’m kinda surprised it’s taken so long to tell their story on the big screed again.

Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson play Texas Rangers in Bonnie and Clyde film The Highwaymen.
“You’ve read the story of Jesse James,” wrote Bonnie Parker during the famous crime spree she undertook with Clyde Barrow, “Of how he lived and died.” Well, an event series is on the way that's going to tell a little more.
The Highwaymen will star Kevin Costner as Texas Ranger Frank Hamer, and Woody Harrelson as his partner Maney Gault, who came out of retirement to nab the Barrow Gang, according to Deadline. Costner’s (Dances With Wolves, Hidden Figures, Bull Durham, Field of Dreams, JFK and The Untouchables) turn as a Texas Ranger in the History miniseries Hatfields and McCoys earned him an Emmy, a Golden Globe and a SAG Award. Kathy Bates, Kim Dickens, from Fear the Walking Dead, Thomas Mann, John Carroll Lynch, and William Sadler will also star,...

Hollywood glamour strikes the crime genre, with a bank robbery tale that concentrates on high living and high fashion. Superstars Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway play a coy game of thief and investigator. This expensive show is not really in fashion anymore, but in 1968 it was high-class filmmaking, with Norman Jewison solidifying his position as a smart maker of solid mainstream entertainment.

Life in the post-Twilight world is a bitch. Is this what we have to look forward to? Between the pathetic simpering lip-quivering of Bella Swan and the pathetic "I just need a man" idiocy of Valentine's Day and He's Just Not That Into You, we are seriously lacking in women for our young girls to emulate. I don't have a daughter (thank fucking God), but if I did, I'd honestly never take her to the movies. She'll end up either whimpering about finding a man to complete her, or flashing her cans in front of Joe Francis. That's what it feels like.
No, I want a woman who kicks ass ... literally. I want a daughter who'll punch a guy in the wontons if he even contemplates treating her wrong. I want a woman like my wife -- someone who is smart, acerbic as hell, funny, and takes no shit. And...

Movie: IshqiyaDirector: Abhishek ChaubeyActors: Vidya Balan, Naseeruddin Shah, Arshad WarsiRating: ***1/2 C****ium sulphate is her favoured cuss. She knows her sections of the Indian Penal Code. She’s the Bonnie Parker to two Clyde Barrows (Naseer, Arshad), simultaneously playing both the men. She gets wants she wants. She holds the gun, and is still femininely attractive (or at least as gorgeous as Vidya Balan can possibly get). For a film set in a male-dominated, almost misogynist middles of India, you’re instantly struck by the leading lady, who comes across the most powerful character. Vishal Bhardwaj (as producer, music composer and dialogue-writer) gives this ...
