Richard graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Film and Television production from Boston University's School of Communication in 1998. He went on to work in the film and television industry in Miami and Los Angeles before moving to Europe in 2003 to pursue other interests. He then received a Masters in Film Studies and Archiving in 2005 from the University of East Anglia in Norwich, UK. After working on a news-film digitization project at ITN Source in London, he relocated to Bournemouth, UK to work at the Arts Institute at Bournemouth teaching film production.
In 2008, he moved back to the United States and took up residence in Portland, Oregon, working in secondary education before joining the US Coast Guard Reserves in 2012.
He is now an active duty chef in the US Coast Guard with the rank of First Class Petty Officer (E-6).
