“After the Party” came from anger, says co-creator Dianne Taylor.
“It came from a lot of anger.”
“Robyn delivered an amazing audition for something I wrote, and the director said ‘no.’ He said she was ‘too mature’ for the role, even though it was written for someone her age. We decided to make something together, where a 50-year-old isn’t played by a 30-year-old.”
“For the longest time, we didn’t have a character and we didn’t have a story. All we had was this rage. Then we decided to use our own lives and own experiences, and in the meantime, this anger just went away,” Malcolm says at Series Mania.
Penny, played by Robyn Malcolm – who also co-created the miniseries – is a high-school teacher. Years ago, during a party, she accused her own husband of sexually exploiting her daughter’s drunk teenage friend. Now, he is back, and...

2004 was an odd year for horror films. We got masterpieces, we were gifted some of the best and worst so-bad-it’s-good films and unexpected sequels seemed to come out of left field regularly and one of those is what we’ll focus on today. With its lead from the first film dead, where could a sequel possibly go? Would they dare to introduce brand new characters, or would they continue the story of the Fitzgerald sisters? Join us on JoBlo Horror Originals as we revisit Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed (watch it Here).
Coming out 4 years after the original, Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed takes a turn for the darker side, or even darker side. Brigitte Fitzgerald survives the ordeal with her sister but in the process tasted her sister’s blood. So, like her sister, she starts turning into a werewolf. However, she’s one step ahead in that she...

More than two decades ago, Ginger Snaps,a modest, lycanthropy-themed horror film from Canada, hit the festival circuit, receiving solid critical notices, but limited returns at the box office. Thankfully, Ginger Snaps didn't disappear into obscurity like so many of its contempories horror-wise. Instead, it received a much-deserved second life on the home video format, impressing graduate students and horror fans alike with its subtext-rich narrative, carefully crafted characters, and knockout performances from its co-stars, Emily Perkins and Katharine Isabelle. Two sequels followed, but few films in or out of the horror genre since have explored its themes or ideas with similar depth or insight, though My Animal, Jacqueline Castel’s feature-length debut, might come closest. While Ginger Snaps tied female sexuality — and its first, hormonally driven expression — with lycanthropic transformation, the ‘80s-set My Animal connects lycanthropy...

Ginger Snaps is a landmark in feminist horror and now the seminal movie is set for a highly anticipated collector’s edition treatment from Second Sight Films. The original film is set in the suburban Canadian town of Bailey Downs, where a series of dog killings piques the interest of a pair of outcast teens; sisters Brigitte and Ginger Fitzgerald. Then on the night of Ginger’s first period, she is...

The first week of October is officially here, so it’s full steam ahead on the Halloween season from here on out. This week’s streaming picks embrace spooky season festivities by centering on holiday-themed horror movies that feature Halloween parties as their slaying grounds.
Some of these horror movies bring the fun, while others aim to spike your adrenaline. But all use Halloween parties as a centerpiece for the horror that’s unleashed within.
Here’s where you can stream them this week.
For more Stay Home, Watch Horror picks, click here.
Cemetery of Terror – AMC+, Shudder
Rubén Galindo Jr.’s most prominent horror feature is the American-influenced Don’t Panic (available on Shudder), but the Halloween-centric Cemetery of Terror offers the most fun. A trio of college kids decides to impress their ladies by stealing a body from a morgue for a Halloween prank and party in an abandoned house.

The 2000 film Ginger Snaps (watch it Here) is my all-time favorite werewolf movie. That was followed by a sequel – Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed – and a very unexpected prequel – Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning – and while I’m not as enamored with them as I am with the original movie, I do get some enjoyment out of watching them. The oddball prequel especially. If you’re a fan of Ginger Snaps trilogy as well and happen to have a Region B (or region free) Blu-ray player, you’ll be glad to hear that Second Sight Films is packaging all three movies together in a limited edition UK box set that’s going to be released on October 30th. Just in time for Halloween, which happens to be the setting of the first movie.

From historically accurate costumes to expensive set designs, it takes a lot of money to shoot a believable period piece, with these films requiring an additional level of planning in order to feel true to life. That’s why it’s so rare to see non-blockbuster productions take on this challenge – especially when it comes to monster movies.
That being said, there are still some brave genre filmmakers that try and experiment with different story settings without the benefit of a super-hero movie budget, which often leads to incredibly unique horror films. That’s why we’ve decided to come up with a list recommending six of the best period-piece monster movies, as creature features shouldn’t have to be limited to any particular era.
For the purposes of this list, we’ll be defining “period piece” as any movie that takes place in a time period previous to when it was filmed.

With the previous episode of our Best Horror Movie You Never Saw video series, I wrote about a werewolf movie that I feel is underrated, the 1985 Stephen King adaptation Silver Bullet. With the episode that was just released this morning, I had the chance to write about my personal favorite werewolf movie, Ginger Snaps (watch it Here) from 2000. To find out all about Ginger Snaps, check out the video embedded above!
Directed by John Fawcett from a screenplay by Karen Walton, Ginger Snaps has the following synopsis:
Ginger and Brigitte, two sisters trapped in suburbia, are obsessed with mayhem, torture and death until they get a taste of the real thing. Bitten by a wild animal, Ginger begins to mutate into a sexy, uncontrolled woman, with some nasty canine tendencies. Is it a virus? Is it a curse? Or the first step towards becoming a vicious werewolf?

In this edition of The Silver Lining, we’ll be covering Colin Minihan’s alien abduction thriller, Extraterrestrial!
At one point, it can be argued that the Vicious Brothers were one of Canada’s most influential filmmaking duos, only challenged by the Soska Sisters in genre cinema. While these punk-rock partners (who aren’t really brothers) skyrocketed to stardom after the popularity of 2007’s Grave Encounters, they weren’t too keen on repeating themselves after that initial success, even passing along their directorial duties to John Poliquin on Grave Encounters 2.
For their next endeavor, the duo decided to look back on an unproduced passion project. Inspired by their perceived lack of “cool” alien movies in the horror genre, the filmmakers had come up with a story informed by UFO abduction accounts and government conspiracy theories long before their first feature film. Updating the script, they soon began production on what would eventually become 2014’s Extraterrestrial.

Screambox original documentary Pennywise: The Story of It uncovered a wealth of insight into the 1990 Stephen King adaptation. Five years of work from co-directors John Campopiano (Unearthed & Untold: The Path to Pet Sematary) and Christopher Griffiths (Leviathan: The Story of Hellraiser) paid untold dividends for horror fans.
With exclusive interviews with many of the miniseries’ key players – Pennywise himself, Tim Curry, cast members Richard Thomas, Seth Green, Tim Reid, and Emily Perkins, director Tommy Lee Wallace, writer Lawrence D. Cohen, special effects makeup artist Bart Mixon, and more – along with rare materials and never-before-seen footage, even the most knowledgeable viewers will learn a thing or two.
Here are six things I learned from Pennywise: The Story of It.
1. George A. Romero was originally attached to direct.
King and George A. Romero were fans of one another’s output, which ultimately led to their friendship and several collaborations, but both wanted to work together more.

A TV series based on the cult horror films “Ginger Snaps” is in the works from the producers behind AMC’s hit series “Killing Eve.”
The trilogy of “Ginger Snaps” movies, released in the early 2000s, follows a pair of teenage sisters obsessed with death and the occult. The darkly comedic horror films starred Emily Perkins and Katharine Isabelle as Brigitte and Ginger Fitzgerald, the latter of whom gets bitten by a vicious creature and turns into a werewolf. Brigitte must fend off this new, violent version of her sister and stop her from wreaking havoc on their town.
The films failed to be major successes at the box office, but have gone on to garner a cult status and win indie acclaim.

As the final season of “Supernatural” inches toward the series’ end, it does so with one quintessential question looming over the show: Will the Winchesters have to kill God — aka Chuck (Rob Benedict) — and if they succeed, does that mean all of existence or simply Sam (Jared Padalecki) will cease to, well, exist?
“It’s Season 15 and it’s as epic as it gets: It’s Sam and Dean versus God. The finish is not going to be, ‘Oh they had a really nice talk and everything’s Ok.’ It’s leaning towards a bigger faceoff, a standoff. It doesn’t feel like Chuck can be reasoned with,” Benedict tells Variety.
Showrunner Andrew Dabb previously told Variety that God was the “uber-villain” of the final season. Although Sam shot him at the end of Season 14, which gave them matching shoulder wounds that seem to be refusing to heal, God/Chuck...

Director John Fawcett and screenwriter Karen Walton prove you can teach an old werewolf new tricks in this inventive B thriller satirizing the miseries of high school life. Brigitte and Ginger Fitzgerald are two rebellious siblings who really take this goth business seriously, particularly Ginger, whose growing pains include turning into a werewolf. Emily Perkins and Katharine Isabelle are terrific as the supernatural sister act and Mimi Rogers is the supportive but ultimately ineffectual mom.

Stephen King is, without a doubt, the ruling monarch of the modern horror story. Over the last couple of years, King’s films have been having a little revival all of there own, one of note is the Andrés Muschietti 2017 reboot of It. Now coming off the back of the film’s success, a new documentary, ‘Pennywise: The Story of It’, focusing on the rightly famous ’90s miniseries is set to reawaken whole generations living nightmare.
The original miniseries traumatised a generation of kids who watched it in 1990 and no-one ever looked at clowns the same way again. The name, The Losers Club, perfectly sums up the group of seven friends that drive the story in this Stephen King shocker. They live in the quiet town of Derry, Maine and spend their days trying to negotiate what it means to be a teen. But when they start hearing and seeing...

Like many of you, I grew up with the 1990 TV adaptation of Stephen King's It in my life. I loved that two-part movie and it scared the shit out of a whole generation of kids! Well, there’s a documentary coming that dives into the making of that adaptation called Pennywise: The Story of It and it looks like it will be filled with all kinds of fun stories about the making of the film.
The doc will include 50 interviews with the cast and crew of the film along with over 700 never-before-seen photos from the production and of course there will be rare footage and photos from the set. Some of the people that were interviewed include Tim Curry, Seth Green, Richard Thomas, Emily Perkins, Bart Mixon, and a lot more. It’s kinda cool seeing all these actors talking about the film all these years later.

Ahead of the three-day event, Scott caught up with the convention’s CEO and founder, Dan Doherty, to discuss what sparked his love of the genre, the convention’s origin, this year’s special guest lineup, and more.]
Dan, let’s start at the start. When did you first get into horror?
Dan Doherty: I’ve been into horror since I was a kid—I’m not sure of the exact age. For me, it was a way to test my bravery. I was bullied a bit growing up, and it was a way to test it from a safe distance. And then after a while, it just becomes an adrenaline rush; you immerse yourself in a good horror film, but there isn’t much that scares me these days other than public washrooms [laughs]. I can remember watching C.H.U.D. when I was fairly young, maybe ten, but I’m not sure if that was the first. All I know is that once I was introduced to horror, I was hooked.
That seems to be the case with pretty much everyone—once you’re in,...

I can remember watching C.H.U.D. when I was fairly young, maybe ten, but I’m not sure if that was the first. All I know is that once I was introduced to horror, I was hooked.
That seems to be the case with pretty much everyone—once you’re in,...

There are certain movies that, as you are witnessing them for the first time, feel like something of an event, and that is precisely my experience with Stephen King’s It, which first aired on ABC in November 1990. I can remember everything about watching both installments—how terrified I was of Tim Curry as Pennywise, how much I genuinely loved those kids and how awesome it was to see one of my favorite actors, John Ritter, show up in a horror movie (based on a Stephen King novel nonetheless). It was a landmark in many regards, but to me, as a fan, it's monumental because it truly was one of the first things I ever saw air on network television that genuinely scared the hell out of me.
And since we here at Daily Dead decided to celebrate the Halloween season by paying tribute to many of our favorite King...

The cast and crew of A Christmas Horror Story have stuffed the cinematic stockings with a delightfully devious new take on the holiday season. With A Christmas Horror Story now out in select theaters and viewable on VOD and iTunes, Daily Dead caught up with Steve Hoban—one of the film's three directors—to discuss working with William Shatner, setting the horror anthology film in the same town from the Ginger Snaps movies, and much more.
Thanks for taking the time to converse with Daily Dead today. I really enjoyed A Christmas Horror Story and believe it will become a holiday cult classic that horror fans can happily unwrap each year. How did you get involved with this project and what appealed to you the most after reading the script for the first time?

It Follows, this year’s genre film of choice for mainstream critics, has been compared to many films. With its indeterminately-retro vibe, well-executed tracking shots, and melodic yet creepy score, it hearkens back to tons of movies, and it’s clearly a descendant of the genre as a whole and its various obsessions; youth, death, sex, dread, and transformation are all invoked, particularly the relationship between sex and death. Essentially, whatever films you grew up with or that strongly affected you were the films you’d see staring back at you from the screen. Today’s widely-read critics mostly grew up in the age of the slasher, so they see the late 70’s and early 80’s in it. So maybe that’s the reason the film’s most obvious parallel- to me, at least- was something I really never saw mentioned in any of the countless thinkpieces and rave reviews...

Horror fans usually know where a film is going when they see a group of walk into a cabin in the woods, it means that blood is going to flow as freely as the alcohol they brought with them. This is the perfect example of what to expect with Extraterrestrial, you can tell what is coming because it never deviates from what is expected. In truth though this may be exactly what the Vicious Brothers were aiming for anyway.

The Vicious Brothers, writer/directors of the two popular Grave Encounters found-footage flicks, turn their hands to a more traditional narrative movie, mixing traditional filming methods with their penchant for Pov shaky-cam, with Extraterrestrial.
Still reeling from her parents divorce, April (Brittany Allen) is dragged back to the vacation cabin she spent fond summers at as a child accompanied by a group of friends. Her trip down memory lane takes a dramatic and terrifying turn when a fireball descends from the sky and explodes in the nearby woods. Lead by her boyfriend (Freddie Stroma), the group venture out toward the crash site and discover the remnants of a ship from another planet along with footprints that suggest its alien occupants are still alive.

From The Twilight Zone to Penny Dreadful, Doctor Who and more, Den Of Geek’s writers revisit the TV episodes that truly terrify them…
It’s Halloween! Icicles are glistening from window sills. Chestnuts are roasting on open fires. North Pole elves are… hang on, no. None of that nice, fluffy stuff is happening. At Halloween, demonic creatures hunt for flesh, monsters creep out of their graves, and TV does its level best to freak us all the hell out.
In the spirit of all that, we asked our writers to select and share the TV episodes, horror or otherwise, that have made them whimper with fear. Here they all are, 31 of them, because, well, at Halloween, we like things to add up to 31.
Note that this isn’t a Top 10, or a Best Of, nor is it listed in order of scariness. It’s a collection of the particular...

The werewolf film is a strange thing. You’d think, being such a well-known movie monster, that there would be millions of examples of the type. However, there is not. I’m not even saying that there aren’t a ton of examples of great werewolf films, I’m saying there are barely any werewolf films at all. A long time ago, we did an article on this site to coincide with the theatrical release of one of the Twilight sequels. It was a list of 30 films, 15 of which were werewolf films, and 15 of them were vampire films, to watch instead of seeing the new Twilight. The hardest part about finding 15 worthy vampire films, was narrowing it down to 15. The hardest part of putting together a list of 15 sold werewolf films was a different beast entirely. It was hard to put together even a list of 15 mediocre werewolf films. Sure,...

The ratty hair, the twisted teeth, the oily flesh. No, I'm not talking about the newest movie monster. I'm talking about our awkward high school years! In celebration of the release of All Cheerleaders Die, we're taking a look back at the Top 9 High School Horrors.
Looking back, we can remember plenty of high school horrors, and combination skin is just one of them. There were a lot of possibilities for this list, and we've got 9 of our favorites listed below. But we would have to flunk ourselves if we didn't turn in an honor roll of honorable mentions.
Of course another Lucky McKee film, The Woods, has to be listed, as does Buffy the Vampire Slayer. And those vivacious vixens from The Craft turned up the heat in their high school, and nobody - and we mean nobody - survives Cherry Falls.

Welcome back to This Week In Discs! If you see something you like, click on the title to buy it from Amazon. Blue Ruin Dwight (Macon Blair) is a bit of a loner. He lives in his car, parked on the side of a road near a Delaware beach, and spends his days scrounging for food, collecting cans and reading. A gentle wake-up knock on his car window precedes a disturbing piece of news. The man who killed Dwight’s parents is being released from prison. Single-minded but far from focused, Dwight fills the gas tank, pops the car battery into place and makes a beeline straight into hell. The setup here is economical, and the rest of the film follows suit, but rather than be a negative that simplicity actually elevates the film above its bigger budgeted, higher profile cousins. A Hollywood version of this tale would complicate things with unnecessary subplots, excessive...

Scream Factory has revealed the cover art for their upcoming Blu-ray / DVD Collector’s Edition of Ginger Snaps:
via Scream Factory: “We end January with yet another key art reveal for you. Check out the new key art for our upcoming Collector’s Edition of the Canadian sisters-in-cahoots werewolf favorite Ginger Snaps (DVD & Blu-ray combo out in July)!
Some of you may have seen this before as artist Joel Robinson (The Vincent Price Collection) adapted this from an existing piece of artwork he created prior to Scream Factory which we thought was cool to begin with and liked it enough to represent this fun cult film.

Scream Factory made not one, but two surprise title announcements this weekend at the Halloween: 35 Years of Terror convention. Both 2002′s Dog Soldiers and 2000′s Ginger Snaps will be coming to Blu-ray in 2014. A specific release date has not been announced, as a deal was just signed, but they said to expect them in the Summer of 2014.
Both titles will be released under Scream Factory’s “Collector’s Edition” series, so expect extensive extras, including new bonus features. We’ll have more details on both titles in the coming months. Until then, here are the plot descriptions and trailers for both movies:
Ginger Snaps: “The Fitzgerald sisters Ginger (Katharine Isabelle) and Brigitte (Emily Perkins), fascinated by the macabre, have sworn an oath: “Out by sixteen, or dead in the scene, but together forever”. Outsiders at school, their only friends being each other, they live in a querulous world of their own.

A Priest, A Rabbi and Your Mom Walk Into a Movie Theatre…
You might think that your Mom disapproves of all horror films on principle. At least that’s the stereotype: the wagging finger; the warning that horror films cause nightmares. But the truth is that this is merely a bit of parental judo, reverse psychology designed to push us to watching horror films, because nothing warns us and upholds the moral order like a horror film.
What are the elements of a horror film after all? There is a monster; there is a sense of danger (as critic Joe Bob Briggs puts it “Anyone can die at any time”); the deaths are usually gruesome; and there is usually a moral. If you think about it, fairy tales and horror films are not that far apart – they are even closer to one another in the fairy tales original Grimm-er forms,...
