“Chlois,” it turns out, was — for a hot second, and before Smallville was ever pitched as a series — more than just what would one day be a wild fan theory.
Back during the superhero drama’s run, “Chlois” was a theory that Chloe Sullivan (played by original cast member Allison Mack) would somehow, some way turn out to be the iconic Lois Lane — possibly by adopting “Lois Lane,” her onetime pseudonym, as a new identity (and by some accounts, gulp, in the wake of the real Lois’ demise).

Exclusive: Fox’s 2023-2024 schedule will not include the network’s two highest-rated drama series of 2022-23.
The move of flagship 9-1-1 to ABC was announced in May. Now its spinoff, 9-1-1: Lone Star, which was renewed for a fifth season by Fox in May, will not return with new episodes this spring. Instead, the drama starring Rob Lowe will produce 12 episodes to air in fall 2024, making fans’ wait for Season 5 extra long.
Like any other linear or streaming series, 9-1-1: Lone Star has been impacted by the double Hollywood strikes. Earlier this fall, Fox and producing studio 20th Television had been discussing an 18-episode order — six episodes for midseason — and 12 for fall, sources said. As the SAG-AFTRA strike stretched into November, those plans changed, and the two sides ultimately agreed on 12 episodes for fall 2024.
Fox needs 9-1-1: Lone Star next fall.

Fox is bringing in some repeats of 9-1-1: Lone Star to its fall schedule as it tries to remind viewers that scripted drama still has a place on broadcast TV amid the writers and actors strikes.
The move sees unscripted competition series I Can See Your Voice, which has completed production of its third season, to midseason.
Season 4 of 9-1-1: Lone Star will air starting on Tuesday September 19 at 9 pm, after season 3 of Name That Tune.
The hope is that it can get some traction for the return of 9-1-1: Lone Star with its fifth season once the dual strikes are over. It comes as the show’s parent show 9-1-1 was not renewed by Fox in May, instead set to move to ABC, whose sibling studio 20th TV produces, once the strikes are over.

“I’m always interested in the moral ambiguities in all of us,” declares Tony Goldwyn about the complicated character he portrays in “The Hot Zone: Anthrax,” the latest installment of the hit National Geographic anthology drama thriller. “We all cross moral boundaries and tell ourselves that we’re not doing it, so Bruce had a need to see himself as a hero, and as a patriot and as a soldier of good and a do-gooder and that was tremendously important to him,” he explains, adding for our recent webchat that, “he really formed an identity of goodness, service, expertise, intellect and faith.” Watch our exclusive video interview above

“One of the things we loved about the first season is that it was a bit of a procedural, a bit of a horror story,” declares co-creator and co-showrunner Brian Peterson about revisiting the high-stakes tension of the acclaimed “Hot Zone” anthology series, particularly in a time when we are living within a shared experience of a real-lie pandemic. “it really, at the end of the day was a character study of these people caught in this impossible situation,” he explains, adding for our recent Q&a, “what ‘Anthrax’ gave us was another one of those situations.”

Mailing envelopes full of anthrax spores to individuals is certainly an intimate and personal attack, but because of the ability of anthrax to infect anyone in the area who inhales it once it is in the air, it is also a widespread act of terrorism. The second season of National Geographic’s “Hot Zone” anthology, aptly subtitled “Anthrax,” balances both elements while covering a seven-year period in the FBI’s case to uncover who was responsible for the 2001 attacks.
“The Hot Zone: Anthrax,” which premieres Nov. 28 at 9 p.m. on the linear cabler, follows 2019’s freshman season of the anthology series that centered on the 1989 Ebola crisis. Brian Peterson, co-showrunner of “Hot Zone: Anthrax,” notes that Ebola was a contagion story, so it was about “keeping panic in” and therefore “very claustrophobic.” Now, the second season is “blown out.”

Daniel Dae Kim has been acting for three decades, starting his own production company, 3Ad, eight years ago. But his turn on National Geographic’s “The Hot Zone: Anthrax,” which premieres Nov. 28, marks the first time he has taken leading man status. As FBI agent Matthew Ryker on the anthology series, based on the real-life anthrax terrorist threats that began in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks, Kim is the face of the government organization in addition to the face of the show — which he notes is a “significant step in representation.”
“The Hot Zone” showrunners Brian Peterson and Kelly Souders have said you helped them shape the character of Matthew Ryker. Why was it important to have that agency, even without a producer title?

Following the success of National Geographic limited series The Hot Zone, showrunner-EPs Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson and EP David Zucker looked at around 100 ideas for a second season, landing subject-wise on the harrowing anthrax attacks of 2001.
From the perspective of Peterson, The Hot Zone: Anthrax was “a really good companion piece” for the original—focused on an outbreak of Ebola and the scientists working to combat it—because it wasn’t a story about a virus, but instead “about bacteria in a targeted situation, [a story that] still lived roughly in same world.”
Souders said during the show’s panel today at TCA that it felt like “the right time” to tell this story “during a pandemic, when science is at the forefront.
“Definitely, being able to portray scientists as the heroes of today was important for us,” Peterson added, “and was a huge thing for National Geographic as well.”

Although executive producer Brian Peterson said he and executive producer Kelly Souders probably had “about 100 ideas” for a second season of “The Hot Zone,” diving into the anthrax scare that followed in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks quickly rose to the top for them.

The first time director Jamie Babbit heard the song “Both Sides Now” on the radio, it immediately felt familiar.
She realized she knew the song, not from Joni Mitchell’s expansive library of hits, but because it had been sung at the drug and rehab center her mom ran in Ohio, with different lyrics meant to amplify the perils of addiction.
The revamped lyrics went: “I’ve looked at drugs from both sides now. And still somehow it’s drug delusions. I recall, I really don’t like drugs at all.”
“Growing up, I always thought, ‘Wow, that’s a fun song.’ I didn’t think about the lyrics. But obviously my mom was singing it because it was a drug rehab song,” Babbit recently recalled in an interview with Variety. “And then I heard the Joni Mitchell song on the radio and it had totally different lyrics. Nat Geo is going back to “The Hot Zone.” The cable network ordered a season of the now-anthology series that will center on the anthrax attacks in 2001.
The anthrax attacks took place in the days following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, when letters containing the poisonous and deadly substance were sent to unsuspecting victims.
The anonymous assault claimed five lives, left 17 others sick and caused panic throughout the U.S. Despite interagency turf wars and many false leads, an unlikely team of Usamriid scientists (The U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases and the Department of Defense’s lead research laboratory), FBI agents and Justice Department personnel slowly closed in on a shocking prime suspect.

Included in American Scientist magazine’s list of “books that shaped a century of science,” Richard Preston’s non-fiction classic The Hot Zone has long been considered the definitive study of the origins of the Ebola virus. It is also, as chiller writer Stephen King would testify, a gripping read: “The first chapter of The Hot Zone is one of the most horrifying things I’ve read in my whole life,” he famously wrote, “and then it gets worse.” It was this perfect mix of drama, information and entertainment that drew in its writer-showrunner duo of Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson. “Richard’s book was such a page-turner,” says Souders, “that I’d say about halfway into it we realized we wanted to do it and that there was no turning back.” Add the involvement of Ridley Scott’s Scott Free company and the deal was sealed. “It was a no-brainer,...

When they first went to work creating the National Geographic Channel's limited series The Hot Zone, Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson were excited to dig into this true story about the origins of the Ebola virus. It was going to be a thrill, Souders recalls, "to get into the nitty-gritty of it all and realize that viruses were more terrifying than anything we could write as fiction."

Richard Preston’s 1994 book “The Hot Zone” reflects on the origins of Ebola and the 1980s outbreak that saw the fatal disease hit U.S. soil, and follows the journeys of many individuals who were touched by it at the time. But Brian Peterson and Kelly Souders’ limited series adaptation honed in more specifically on one woman’s experience: Lt. Col. Nancy Jaax (played by Julianna Margulies), who was appointed to work on the Ebola outbreak operation for the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases.

It’s been 30 years since Ebola was first discovered on American soil, and a new NatGeo series is looking to capture the danger and resilience of those who made sure the world avoided catastrophic consequences.
“The Hot Zone” has assembled quite the on-screen group to help bring this sequence of events to the screen. Julianna Margulies stars as Dr. Nancy Jaax, who led the effort to contain the spread of Ebola in the United States after the initial African outbreak. Fresh off the series finale of “Game of Thrones,” Liam Cunningham co-stars as Wade Carter, Jaax’s mentor and another doctor working to counteract the potential biological crisis. The Hot Zone, starring Golden Globe and Emmy award winner Julianna Margulies as Dr. Nancy Jaax, is based on the eponymous international best-seller by Richard Preston. It is inspired by a true story about the origins of Ebola, a highly infectious and deadly virus from the central African rainforest and its arrival on Us soil in 1989. When this killer suddenly appeared in monkeys in a scientific research lab in the suburbs of Washington, D.C., there was no known cure. A heroic U.S. Army scientist (Dr. Nancy Jaax) working with a secret military specialized team put her life on the line to head off the outbreak before it spread to the human population. The Hot Zone is a dramatic, high-stakes scientific thriller with a courageous, brilliant and determined heroine at its center. The day might be near when it will be news if an upcoming TV series doesn’t have a podcast to go along with it. For now, add Nat Geo’s “The Hot Zone” to the growing list of series enlisting some audio companionship. The story, which tells of Lt. Col. Nancy Jaax’s (Julianna Margulies) efforts to contain the Ebola virus after its first appearance on American soil, also will be addressed in “American Epidemics,” a Wondery audio series produced in conjunction with the TV show.
Lindsay Graham, the podcast host behind “American History Tellers” and the presidential-themed fiction series “Terms” and “1865,” will head up this new series, which will span three episodes. The second episode of “American Epidemics” will focus on the production of “The Hot Zone,” featuring interviews with Margulies and showrunners Kelly Sounders and Brian Peterson.
“American Epidemics” premieres May 10, with new episodes debuting every Friday.

“The Hot Zone,” a new limited series that played at the Tribeca Film Festival April 30 ahead of its debut on National Geographic May 27, begins with a graphic burst of effluvium. A boil-covered air passenger flying over central Africa discharges vomit; later, in the hospital, he practically explodes blood onto a doctor, who very slowly blinks, as if in disbelief that a person could contain so much foul fluid.
These early sequences fulfill several purposes. For one thing, they warn off potential viewers with weak stomachs, and signal to those sticking around exactly what this story will entail. More crucially, they indicate quite how serious are the stakes of this series, about the fight against the Ebola virus after a stateside outbreak in 1989. Death is nothing new on television. But the grotesque hemorrhaging Ebola induces in its unlucky sufferers brings home the gravity of the story, and the courage of its players.

Kelly Souders was “terrified” after reading “The Hot Zone,” Richard Preston Jr.‘s nonfiction bestseller about an Ebola outbreak outside of Washington, D.C. Souders adapted the book into a limited series with her producing partner Brian Peterson and Jeff Vintar, casting Julianna Margulies as the military doctor who works to keep the deadly virus from spreading before it’s too late. Watch our exclusive video interview with Souders and Peterson above.

Souder was intrigued by the story of Dr. Nancy Jaax and her husband, Dr. Jerry Jaax (Noah Emmerich), who’s a fellow soldier. “Obviously, a woman in the military in 1989 was of particular interest to us,” she reveals. Nancy is doubted at every turn, including, at times, by her own spouse, who puts himself in dangerous situations to protect her even though she’s fully prepared to look out for herself.

The Tribeca Film Institute and Alfred P. Sloan Foundation have announced the three Tfi Sloan Filmmaker Fund 2019 grantees, awarding them a total of $150,000.
The creators behind “Asia A,” “Bolichicos,” and “Wiring Utopia” have been chosen as the new grant winners.
“The 2019 slate of Tfi Sloan grantee teams represents our most international year yet,” said Tfi executive director Amy Hobby. “Each project deeply impacted the jury with fresh points of view, sense of timeliness, accessibility to wide audiences, and of course, their incorporation of compelling science, economics, and technology.”
From filmmaker Andrew Reid, “Asia A” portrays a college basketball player who suffers from a spinal cord injury, and must either accept his life as a paraplegic or hold out hope for a recovery. Venezuelan writer-director Juan Avella and Mexican producer Diego Nájera created “Bolichicos,” a film inspired by the true story of a 20-year-old in Venezuela who carries out a million-dollar currency exchange scam.

As the cable portion of the Television Critics Assn. press tour continued, A&E looked ahead about a year to the next season of “Knightfall,” while Epix brought two big dramas set to premiere in the summer of 2019: “Pennyworth,” based on DC Comics characters, and the Ben Kingsley starrer “Perpetual Grace, Ltd.” Lifetime brought together the female directors of a number of their original movies for a rare peak behind the curtain, and National Geographic ended the day with a combination of factual programming such as the feature documentary “Science Fair” and Bear Grylls’ “Hostile Planet” and fiction, with the limited series adaptation of “The Hot Zone,” starring Julianna Margulies.
Here, Variety breaks down five things learned during TCA Day 13.

Julianna Margulies is leaving behind the power suits and high heels she was accustomed to wearing while working on The Good Wife and Dietland, opting instead to wear military fatigues in National Geographic’s The Hot Zone. Margulies stars as Army scientist Lt. Col. Nancy Jaax in the small screen adaption of the 1994 best-selling novel by Richard Preston about the origins of the Ebola virus.
The six-part miniseries follows the heroic Jaax and her race to contain the viral hemorrhagic fever of Central African origins before an outbreak infects the U.S. population. A trailer for the series was released today at the Television Critics Association meeting.
Margulies was joined by co-stars Noah Emmerich, Liam Cunningham, Topher Grace, James D’Arcy, Paul James, and showrunners Brian Peterson and Kelly Souders for a Television Critics Association spring presentation panel on Sunday to discuss the drama set to air May 27-29 at 9/8c.

Exclusive: American Chopper is back for the second season of its revival, returning to Discovery Channel starting Tuesday, Feb. 12.
This season, motorcycle builders Paul Teutul Sr. and Paul Teutul Jr. reclaim their renowned bike brands, Orange County Choppers and Paul Jr. Designs. They also take steps to mend their formerly fractured relationship and begin to restore a 1951 Buick together.
The show returned to the air last year after being absent for six years, during which legal problems between father and son dominated their attention. As noisy as the bikes they producer, the Teutuls have had a contentious relationship, with Paul Jr. being fired at one point from the father’s Orange County Choppers and forming rival Paul Jr. Designs.
While both shops are located near each other in Orange County, New York, the family feud kept them miles apart. The new series explores their reconciliation after years of cross complaints.
