Indigo Girls paid a visit to Late Night with Seth Meyers on Wednesday (May 8th) to play their new song, “What We Wanna Be,” from the soundtrack to the musical film Glitter & Doom.
The duo delivered a moving performance of their first new song in four years while standing against a simple backdrop of purple lighting. Watch a replay below.

“What We Wanna Be” was written for the Glitter & Doom end credits and was inspired by Indigo Girls member Amy Ray’s “own experience of peeling off the layers of things I have built over the years to shield me from pain or even my own truth,” as she explained in a previous statement. “It is a conversation between Glitter and Doom and their endeavor to find healing through the love they have kindled together. It isn’t every day you encounter a pop-disco musical about a buoyant aspiring circus performer and a brooding aspiring rock singer with competing Mommy issues falling in love in Mexico City against the electricized rearrangements of the Indigo Girls. And that’s not exactly lamentable, because I wouldn’t categorize English-language Glitter & Doom as necessarily essential cinema … though I also couldn’t accuse it of being anything other than original either. (Well, except for the foundational premise of opposites attracting and then ultimately clashing over dueling artistic ambitions.) Director Tom Gustafson (Were the World Mine) has crafted a sweet if plodding love story but it’s hard to truly hate on this whirling candy-colored poetic fairytale — it’s just too sincere, much like the musical source material.

Music Box Films has acquired Tom Gustafson and Cory Krueckeberg’s “Glitter & Doom.” The film is billed as a “fantastical queer romance” and the musical comes with songs from the Grammy Award-winning Indigo Girls. “Glitter & Doom” premiered as the closing night film at InsideOut Toronto. White House Alters State Dinner Plans Due To World Crises; The B-52s Will No Longer Perform — Update
Update: First Lady Jill Biden said that The B-52s will no longer perform at the White House State Dinner on Wednesday, and that guests instead will listen to music from the “President’s Own” United States Marine Band and the Army and Air Force Strolling Strings.
The change — from the relentlessly upbeat B-52s to the more sedate instrumental music — was made given the multiple crises in the world, Biden said.
“While we had initially planned for legendary B-52s to perform their iconic dance and party music, we are now in a time when so many are facing sorrow and pain, so we made a few adjustments to the entertainment portion of the evening,” Jill Biden said.
The dinner will be for Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and partner Jodie Haydon. Biden said that The B-52s will still attend the event.

Many might be unaware of the contributions Yoko Ono has made to music. Her music is avant-garde, with sounds often ahead of their time. John Lennon loved her music and infused his own work with a more stylized feel, leading to more unconventional work in his solo career. In the 1970s, Lennon heard a song by The B-52’s that he thought sounded similar to Ono’s work.

It is fitting to find Fanny: The Right to Rock broadcast on PBS. The channel thrives on educational material, and director Bobbi Jo Hart’s documentary teaches many lessons. The film chronicles the career, and captures the reunion of Fanny, a group of musicians who changed the dynamics of rock in the 1970s. The lineup was unique, labels and management executives dubbed them the “female Beatles.” They made history as the first all-women rock band to release an LP with a major record label.
Originally called The Svelts and rebranded as Wild Honey, Fanny was formed in the mid-1960s in Sacramento, Calif., by three Filipina American musicians: sisters June and Jean Millington, on guitar and bass, and drummer Brie Darling. All three sang. When Darling had her daughter, Brandi, in 1968, Fanny added drummer Alice de Buhr, and roving keyboardist Nickey Barclay.
As was the fashion of the time, they lived in a band house.

The first time the B-52s performed onstage together after Covid lockdowns — playing “Love Shack” on Jimmy Kimmel Live! — might have been nerve-racking for any other band. They had to shave a minute out of the song to accommodate the tight TV spot. Then they had to wait in a trailer until they were called onstage —”We didn’t even get to meet him,” the perennially redheaded Kate Pierson says of Kimmel — and then it was just a matter of tapping immediately into their inborn party spirit. The performance was typically spot-on,...

Helping to pave the way for women in the music industry, yet with much of their story lost to history, the rock band Fanny is now deservedly getting the spotlight in a new documentary. A world premiere at last year’s Hot Docs and now set for a release on May 27 at Quad Cinema, Bobbi Jo Hart’s Fanny: The Right to Rock examines the Sacramento-based band formed by a pair of Filipina-American sisters in their garage in the 1960s.

Miranda Lambert’s 2021 collaborative album The Marfa Tapes, with Jack Ingram and Jon Randall, was a stripped-down set that helped resituate the Texas-born Lambert in the tradition of Lone Star singer-songwriters like Guy Clark and Robert Earl Keen. It also further cemented the country star’s reputation for stylistic risks — following 2019’s more conventionally fantastic Wildcard, and released in the same year she dropped a tropical house remix of “Tequila Does.”

The ’90s: back! Also back: overwhelming existential dread! They’re two great tastes that taste great together, as any fan of Showtime’s hit series “Yellowjackets” can attest. Besides all the mid-’90s pop and indie-rock needle drops that pop up amid the calmer moments in the show’s sometimes horrific storm, there’s also music of an uneasier nature coming from the two musicians responsible for both the score and original songs, both ’90s veterans: Craig Wedren of the band Shudder to Think, and Anna Waronker of That Dog.
Without resorting to cannibalism, these two formed a few survival skills of their own, in escaping the uncertainty of the music business for steady television work, and previously became a TV team working on a couple of very different series, Hulu’s “Shrill” and The CW’s “The Republic of Sarah.” Now, “Yellowjackets” has allowed them some moments to revisit their ’90s band roots,...

Thirty years ago, R.E.M. dropped an album called Out of Time — and nobody was prepared for it. “Losing My Religion,” “Half a World Away,” “Country Feedback,” “Near Wild Heaven” — these were the most soulful, gorgeous songs the boys from Athens G-a had ever written. This comeback changed everything about the R.E.M. story, but it also presaged the whole decade to come. They basically invented the Nineties with this album. It was a total shock, after a few years when they sounded like bored rock pros going through the motions.

Pylon came out of the small college town of Athens, Georgia, at the dawn of the Eighties, playing a new kind of Southern rock that stunned people at the time and has continued to make converts ever since. Spare but fun, disorientating but inviting, their sound was in step with the stentorian dance-punk of U.K. bands like Gang of Four or the Au Pairs, but it was much more wide-open, driven by possibility rather than angst — the sound of slackers dreaming, not punks ranting.

New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art is home to an overwhelming collection of historical art objects, including a mummy mask from 60 A.D., Greek bronzes from the 8th century B.C. and the original “Washington Crossing the Delaware” painting. Starting April 8th, it will also welcome a different type of antiques — from the guitar Chuck Berry used to record “Johnny B. Goode” to the knives Keith Emerson would stab into his Hammond organ during the crazier Emerson, Lake & Palmer days.

After learning from PETA that Carson & Barnes Circus recently used the B-52s songs “(Meet) The Flintstones” and “The Bedrock Twitch” in its controversial elephant act, the band sent the circus a cease and desist letter this morning demanding that it stop using their songs — and urging it to end all animal acts as other circuses have.
Referring to this footage of the circus that performs nationwide and supplies elephant acts to other circuses around the country, singer Kate Pierson says in a new PETA video, “The man in this elephant act was caught on tape by PETA beating the elephants with bullhooks and jabbing them with electric prods…. [O]ur message to our fans and our friends and our families is stay away from cruel circuses and go to some great circuses … that don’t use animal acts.”

With a June 1 date at Philadelphia’s Sugar House Casino, The B-52s – the toast of Athens, Ga and avatars of the dance-punk movement – officially kicked off its 40th anniversary summer tour. That The Bs founding brain trust of Kate Pierson, Fred Schneider and Cindy Wilson was, and is, still intact, energetically performing their fun, frantic classics, drove the Philly audience to zealously enthusiastic and participatory action.
Forty years after they dropped their first single – “Rock Lobster,” recorded for Db Records – Schneider’s fiercely playful call to action to go “Down, down… Let’s rock” still inspired a sold-out roomful of fans to snorkel and crumble in place.
“We all still laugh at the same things and have a sense of each other — and the absurd — that influences each other,” said Schneider just before the Sugar House show. “I would never dream of doing it this long if I didn...

At some point in the early 1990s – I forget the exact year, but research tells me it must have been somewhere around late 1993 or early 1994 – something unbearably exciting happened in our suburb of Merseyside. The rumours went around the school playground in hushed whispers: “Have the cable vans been to your street yet?” Yes, cable TV was on its way to Crosby, meaning that for the first time, a world of viewing beyond the ordinary four terrestrial channels was available to homes without a whacking great ugly satellite dish glued to the outside.

Even though it's a big week for Hollywood divorces, it just so happens to be a week of weddings, too! Kate Pierson, one of the lead singers of The B-52s, married longtime partner Monica Coleman in Hawaii over the weekend. Pierson posted several photos of the weekend in Hawaii to her Facebook, giving fans an inside look at their romantic destination wedding. Pierson donned a pink, Victorian-style dress while her now-wife opted for a gold gown. Wearing a floral crown, Pierson looked elated posing next to her wife. Taylor Swift, a woman of many moods and exactly one lipstick, just threw down the third video from her blockbuster album "1989." "Style" is a slow throb, a pleasant recollection of quaint memories with a cute boy who resembles James Dean. This is a big deal because Taylor Swift loves James Dean and knows all of his posters. The video is a B- effort full of familiar Swift sentimentalism. Let's take a walk through a gallery of "Style" and see what kinds of artistic insights we come up with. Just as I suspected, Taylor Swift's innermost feelings -- when revealed -- look like Britney Spears' "Sometimes" video. All this girl wants to do is run around with a pink ball and wear white midriff sweaters on the pier. Duh. Moodz. It's kind of weird that we have a superstar who takes most of her visual cues from that Sixpence None the Richer song.

The B-52′s are the greatest party band in rock history, and along with R.E.M. put the city of Athens, Georgia on the musical map in the 1980′s.
Formed in 1977, Kate Pierson, Keith Strickland, Fred Schneider and siblings Cindy and Ricky Wilson combined surf music, new wave, and thrift store fashion, and made something magical … and unique.
Ricky died of AIDS in late 1985, and after Rock Hudson, he was the first person I knew of to die from the disease. But his spirit lives on three decades later every time a classic B-52′s song is played.
This weekend is Kate’s 66th birthday, so let’s pay tribute to her, and the rest of the band for giving us so much happiness. What is the greatest B-52′s song? Here are my top five:
5. Roam

It’s no secret we love Adam Lambert and the energy and joy he brings to the otherwise sterile, manufactured world of modern pop music. This year we started the weekly feature Hump Day With Adam Lambert, to keep up with his life and career, and the response from his fans has been overwhelming. We want to thank you taking this glitter rocket through the world of Adam with us!
Because the next two Wednesdays are Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, this will be the final Hump Day of the year, but we’ll see you in January as we journey with Adam through 2014. And we’ll have new Hump Day features for you to enjoy.
Right now, let’s take a chronological look back at some of the highlights of Adam’s 2013. It was a year of surprises, upheaval, and new beginnings. And we’re glad for every minute of it!

We’ve barely had time to recover from last week’s heartwrenching elimination -- Mark was sent packing, plunging a (figurative) knife through the heart of his partner, Clark -- when we’re back for another Quickfire Challenge. Art finds time to blend a watermelon soup, and Lorena manages to grill some cauliflower. Kate Pierson and Fred Schneider, members of The B-52s, appear to sample the hastily thrown together dishes. Most gay children probably don't realize they're gay, but if they're anything like I was at age 5-14, they knew exactly what kinds of TV they cared about. And for those of us who came of age in the '90s, Nickelodeon was truly the ne plus ultra of kid programming. The orange-splashed network routinely featured characters who were self-possessed, unashamed, and totally weird. That's the gay kid hallmark right there. Join us as we revisit nine particular characters who thrilled me and many others during the glorious '90s.
Angelica Pickles from Rugrats
The bossiest brat in the playpen happened to be the funniest female cartoon character to appear on TV, let alone Nickelodeon, in years. When three-year-old tantrum expert Angelica debuted on Rugrats in 1991, she reclaimed Lucy Van Pelt's callous humor for little kids everywhere. She was both diabolical and insufferable, and what self-respecting gay child can't relate to that?...

Sesame Street remains the gold standard for children's television, but it also boasts some of the best original music and parodies of the past 43 years. It's garnered more Emmys than can fit in Hooper's Store, and it's phalanx of celebrity guests is staggering. Last week writer Judy Freudberg, who wrote for the show for 35 seasons, died of a brain tumor at age 62, which got me thinking about the show's wonderful past. Today, let's revisit the show's 10 greatest (and arguably, in many cases, gayest) musical moments. Those hyperlinks within the subheads link to the original video. Jamming yet, fellow Cookie Monsters?

If you were a kid who grew up during the '90s, chances are you were probably watching either MTV or Nickelodeon to get your fix of entertainment for the day. And if you watched Nickelodeon, you were probably a fan of “The Adventures of Pete & Pete,” the oddball series featuring two brothers both named Pete and their sometimes surreal adventures growing up in the suburb of Wellsville. Created by Will McRobb and Chris Viscardi -- who were working in the promo department at the still-fledgling network -- 'Pete & Pete' had begun as a series of shorts in 1989 before becoming a regular series several years later. But this wasn’t just any kids program. Not only did it feature an 8-year-old with a tattoo of a topless mermaid named Petunia and a personal superhero wildly gesticulating in skin tight pants but featured recurring guest stars, including Steve Buscemi, Iggy Pop,...

Howard the Duck was one of my favorite movies for an embarrassingly long stretch of childhood, so I think it’s safe to say I didn’t have particularly great taste. However, one of the undoubtedly few good viewing choices I made was The Adventures of Pete & Pete, which, unlike a certain comedy starring Marty McFly’s mom and an intergalactic mallard, has only gotten better in the rear-view.

By request, the flip side of A Seriously Random List of the Best Bands with the Worst Singers. I found this one much more difficult to compile, so feel free to disagree or add your own.
5. Bjork/The Sugarcubes. Bjork is too fine a vocalist and too big a personality to be sharing the singing with anyone else. The Sugarcubes did have some decent songs, but our little swan queen is much better solo.
4. James Grant/Love and Money. I don't even know if anyone else has even heard of this band, but it's a terrible case of a good singer and bad music. Now maybe the musicians themselves aren't actually the worst but the stuff they played was cheesy, corny and porny and I'm surprised it doesn't play more elevators.
3. Kate Pierson/The B-52s. Yes, I'm ducking and yes, I can hear you screaming. Don't get your feathers all fluffed.
