In 1994, professional basketball was all the rage, largely thanks to the rise of Michael Jordan and the historic run of three back-to-back NBA championships across 1991, 1992, and 1993, as chronicled in "The Last Dance" documentary series. Before his domination of the NBA, Jordan was considered a blue chip player, an athlete regarded as a hot prospect to be drafted into a professional franchise. Jordan gained blue chip status out of high school in the early 1980s, but he'd go on to attend college at University of North Carolina before being drafted by the Chicago Bulls in 1984. It wouldn't be until 10 years after Jordan's draft that "The Exorcist" and "The French Connection" director William Friedkin would direct a movie about the corrupt and complicated practice of college recruitment for sports in the perfect basketball movie, "Blue Chips."
"Blue Chips," released in 1994, follows Nick Nolte as Pete Bell, head coach of the fictional Western University Dolphins in Los Angeles.

Confirming a plan it started exploring last fall, the NCAA said it will host the entire men’s basketball tournament — the event known as March Madness — in Indiana due to Covid-19.
The extraordinary initiative is aimed at ensuring that this year’s 67-game extravaganza does not meet the same fate as the 2020 edition. The cancellation of the tournament last year was one of the most jarring spectacles of the onset of the coronavirus pandemic.
The news delivers a boost to WarnerMedia’s Turner networks as well as ViacomCBS. The two companies have shared broadcast rights to the tournament for many years. The tournament plan also helps Fox and ESPN, which are major college basketball rights holders.
Selection Sunday, the day when tournament participants are announced, remains scheduled for March 14, with the Final Four slated for April 3 and 5. Exact dates for the other rounds of the tournament are yet to be determined.

In HitFix's new feature "Waxing Episodic," we reflect on an episode of television we'll never forget. NBC's "The Office" debuted 10 years ago this week, arriving with the unenviable challenge of having to live up to the standard of one of the best-received comedies of recent times, but went on to outstrip the British original. I don't even know if that's a controversial statement anymore. The British "Office" is great and, in terms of comedic efficiency, NBC's version didn't come close. But Ricky Gervais' series was built for 12 episodes and a Christmas special and never had to worry about longevity, never had to wonder how sustainable its circumstances and its characters were. NBC's version took that world and made it renewable. Whether you think the American "Office" was great (or even good) for all 200-ish of its episodes, it was certainly very good or great for more than 13 episodes. I...

Assuming there were no nerve complications or infections, Ware could be back on the court next season. When the Cardinals beat the Blue Devils 85-63, they honored their fallen teammate by holding up his jersey as they receIved their award. They even...

After two initial replays, CBS stopped showing footage Sunday of Louisville basketball player Kevin Ware breaking his leg during the first half of his team’s Ncaa men’s tournament game against Duke.
The injury during the nationally televised game, and the shocked reaction of Ware’s fellow players, called to mind the gruesome broken leg suffered by Washington Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann in a Monday Night football game in 1985. During Sunday’s game, Theismann tweeted his best wishes to Ware.

During the March 31 Louisville vs. Duke March Madness game, Kevin suffered one of the biggest sports injuries ever caught on camera! Now a new report claims that he could lose his scholarship!
Kevin Ware had his first surgery to repair his horribly broken right leg on April 1. But in the midst of this tragedy, and having to most likely take a year off from basketball to recover, the Louisville Sophomore may lose his scholarship.
Kevin Ware May Lose His Scholarship
Deadspin is reporting that the Georgia native was most likely on scholarship, since he was “highly recruited” out of college. But even though the Ncaa has insurance to cover players when they have “catastrophic” injuries like Kevin’s, there’s no guarantee that his scholarship will be renewed for his junior year.

Louisville sophomore guard Kevin Ware underwent a two-hour surgery Sunday night (March 31) to repair the open fracture he suffered to his right leg during the Cardinals' win over Duke in the Ncaa Midwest Regional final.
The surgery was successful and included resetting Ware's right tibia, inserting a rod into his leg, and closing the wound caused by the bone puncturing the skin of his lower leg. Ware's prognosis is not exactly clear. A lengthy recovery period is expected, as patients who suffer injuries like this may not see signs of healing for eight to twelve weeks.
Still, Lousiville's sports medicine director Fred Hina believes the injury will not be a career ender for Ware. "Because it was a weight-bearing bone and it was such a difficult injury, it will take a while," Hina tells USA Today. "But he will play again."
