Catalan films routinely punch above their weight at high-profile international festivals: Think 2022 Berlin Golden Bear winner “Alcarràs.” That trend looks primed to continue in 2024.
Catalan auteur Albert Serra will debut “Afternoons of Solitude,” co-produced by Catalan companies Andergraun Films and Lacima, with Ideale Audience and Tardes de Soledad.
A fall fest bet, “They Will Be Dust,” from Carlos Marqués- Marcet, is produced by Catalonia’s Lastor Media alongside Chile’s Alina Film and Kino Produzioni in Italy.
Few regions boast a lineup of female filmmakers as impressive as Catalonia. This year, new films from Goya Award winners Pilar Palomero (“Glimmers”) and Belén Funes (“The Turtles”) are strong contenders for festival recognition.
With the backing of Catalonia’s Minority Co-Production Fund, four international co-prods are poised to make a significant impact on this year’s festival circuit. Keep an eye out for Javier Rebollo’s “Close to the Sultan”, Calia Atan...

Argentine co-directors/co-writers Cecila Atwan's and Valeria Pivato's reflective South American arthouse gem The Desert Bride (a.k.a. La Novia del Desierto ) presents an absorbing, truthful, and observational character study of a radiant middle-aged woman forced to embrace unprepared independence after her professional stability collapses leaving her suddenly vulnerable. This low-key, noteworthy soul-searching romancer is undoubtedly profound and passionate in its depiction of a Chilean working-class maid forced to go on an uncertain journey and leave the simple and safe comforts of her existence behind. As inquisitive filmmakers, both Atwan and Pivato skillfully concoct a quiet, sincere and gently witty dramedy that aptly represents new beginnings yet elusive expectations for an exposed woman clinging to her emotional rebound. The Desert Bride is simply poetic in its search for the security of...

It’s a wonderful thing to be proven wrong after declaring a little-known character actor to have had a once-in-a-career moment — when that unforeseen breakthrough merely paves the way for an unexpectedly fruitful career. So it is with Chile’s Paulina Garcia, whose vibrant late-career performance in 2013’s “Gloria” turned out to be a fixed bolt from the blue, its reverberations running the gamut from TV’s “Narcos” to Ira Sachs’ “Little Men.” Now, in Cecilia Atán and Valeria Pivato’s wistfully gorgeous miniature “The Desert Bride,” it has a true and worthy companion piece.
Another story of middle-aged female loneliness and displacement, Atán and Pivato’s anecdote-scaled film is presented through a quieter, more fragile narrative prism than “Gloria’s,” as a repressed domestic worker’s unplanned pit stop en route to a new job opens the narrowest of windows onto a new life altogether. It’s a loving...

Better than ever, now in its seventh year, the spectacular program with its filmmaking guests and a committed community of dedicated and intellectually alive filmgoers invigorates the mind and activist tendencies already in play.
Take for instance, University of Arizona Professor Noam Chomsky, one of the most influential public intellectuals in the world, speaking with Regents’ Professor Toni Massaro about social justice and the environment. It’s not true that nothing grows in the desert. But the plants, creatures and people who make it their home require a certain strain of weathered, parched resilience. And perhaps a brief, unexpected dose of that arid, hardy optimism is exactly what a woman facing the onset of late middle-age needs after decades spent not just in one city, but in one house. The perceptible but shy blossoming of just such a woman forms the dustily sanguine heart of Cecilia Atán and Valeria Pivato‘s tiny but lovely feature debut “The Desert Bride“, a competition title here at the Zurich Film Festival.

In Sebastian Lelio's fine-grained 2013 character portrait, Gloria, Paulina Garcia traced the rocky path to self-discovery of a Chilean divorcee struggling to find wholeness as a middle-aged single woman. In The Desert Bride, the gently seductive first feature from Cecilia Atan and Valeria Pivato, Garcia plays a mousy type who has never known much fulfillment, until an interlude in the rugged Argentinean hinterland liberates the spirit trapped within her. The spareness of both the physical and emotional landscapes yields something quite delicate in a film with the grace and economy of a satisfying short story.

The 2017 Cannes official selection is a mix of brainy competition auteurs, red-carpet star power, and the rarest breed — a handful of players who could return to North America as Oscar contenders.
Nicole Kidman will be stuffing her trunks with evening gowns, as she will need to walk the Palais steps at least four times: twice with Colin Farrell, for Cannes favorite Sofia Coppola‘s Civil War potboiler “The Beguiled” (Focus Features) and Yorgos Lanthimos’ “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” (A24), both in Competition, and again for John Cameron Mitchell‘s midnighter “How to Talk with Girls at Parties” (A24) and a preview of Jane Campion‘s returning Sundance Channel series, “Top of the Lake: China Girl.” How the three films play in Cannes will determine if the Oscar perennial returns for another go-round.
Isabelle Huppert won the Cesar and was close — we think — to winning the Oscar for “Elle.
