Synopsis
All his life, people have told Rudy he’s not good enough, not smart enough, not big enough. But nothing can stop his impossible dream of playing football for Notre Dame. From the time he’s a young boy, Rudy (Sean Astin) is determined to join the Fighting Irish. But his blue collar family only laughs at his ambitions – they know Rudy will follow his father and brothers to the local steel mill. And, for four long years after high school, he does just that. But some dreams won’t die, as Rudy proves when he goes to heroic, occasionally hilarious, lengths to win admission to Notre Dame. Once there, he becomes a walk-on player, serving as little more than a human tackling dummy against the starting players. Bloodied but unbeaten, Rudy wins the respect of legendary coach Ara Parseghian and the other Irish players, who give him one shot at gridiron glory.

Let's just come right out and say it: "Rudy" is one of the greatest sports movies of all time. Whenever a new sports drama comes along and feels cliché, you can blame "Rudy" for doing so many things that have become staples of seeing an underdog overcome seemingly insurmountable odds to achieve their athletic dreams. The film follows scrawny but scrappy dreamer Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger (Sean Astin), who wants nothing more than to attend the University of Notre Dame and play for their legendary football team. Unfortunately, his grades are unimpressive, and his sports prowess leaves plenty to be desired. But that doesn't stop him from doing everything he can to enroll in school and get on that field.
With "Rudy," not only did director David Anspaugh give audiences a story of pure inspiration, but composer Jerry Goldsmith sealed the deal with one of the most beautiful scores ever, so...

It’s an unusual theatrical weekend as the second National Cinema Day rolls out Sunday with $4 tickets for all shows and formats at participating theaters — the bulk of the nation’s circuits big and small. The event was announced Monday with a dedicated clip of new openings, recent returning (The Super Mario Bros. Movie) and re-releases.
Angelika said all its theaters in New York Washington, D.C., California, Virginia and Texas are leaning in, and throwing in $4 sodas of any size. Cinergy Dine-In Cinemas, with nine locations in Texas, North Carolina, Oklahoma and Illinois, will offer small popcorns and sodas for $4. Concession discounts are up each theater owner.
Last year, with the box office still recovering and National Cinema Day held on the generally slow Saturday of Labor Day weekend, the event, which drew crowds, made sense, some indies said this week. (Although they...

Chicago – Catching a young actor in an early career stride is like catching lightning in a bottle. Colin Ford has such a breakthrough role portraying Rickey Hill, a Texas ballplayer who is battling a degenerative disease that may not give him enough time to fulfill his major league dreams. The film is aptly titled “The Hill.”
Rickey Hill wears leg braces as a child due to a degenerative spinal disease, but enjoys playing baseball. His strict pastor father (Dennis Quaid) dissuades his son from the sport, wanting to shield him from further injuries. But despite all odds, the older Rickey (Colin Ford) becomes a baseball “phenom.” When he begins to be scouted for the major leagues, the father and son are still divided, but Rickey Hill won’t give up.

It’s long been said that religion and politics don’t mix. But religion and sports, that’s another story, especially at the movies. The Hill, telling the inspirational true-life story of baseball player Rickey Hill — don’t feel ignorant if you haven’t heard of him; most people seeing the film won’t have either — feels perfectly engineered to appeal to both sports fans and religious folk, especially in those parts of the country so quaintly described as “the heartland.” Basically substituting baseball for dancing, the film plays like an updated version of Footloose, with Dennis Quaid replacing John Lithgow as the disapproving pastor.
When we’re first introduced to Rickey, he’s a young boy growing up impoverished in rural Texas, with braces on his legs because of a degenerative spinal disease. That doesn’t stop him from pursuing his deepest love, namely hitting balls with a bat,...

Exclusive: Dennis Quaid has signed on to star in The Hill, a family drama penned by Angelo Pizzo and the late Scott Marshall Smith, who passed away in December.
The film will tell the true story of Rickey Hill, a kid who overcame his physical disability to play professional baseball. Given the complexities Rickey faced in his relationship with his father, his is a story about more than just athletics. It’s also a story about family, and what one young man can do to follow his dream.
Quaid will portray Rickey’s father, Pastor Hill, an instinctively protective man who doesn’t want his son to go out into the world to pursue his dream, fearing that he’ll get ridiculed for his disability. Ultimately, Hill’s tough exterior is broken as Rickey grows up and proves his natural ability.
Jeff Celentano is directing the film, cast by Rick Montgomery (Green Book), which will go before cameras in Georgia in November.
He’s also producing alongside Warren Ostergard, with Matthew Dwyer, Michael Hollingsworth, Michael Blubaugh and Rickey Hill serving as exec producers.
The rest of the film’s cast has not yet been announced.
“I’m setting out to make an iconic film in the classic sense, a beautiful sweeping and powerful inspirational story. One that will stand the test of time like Blindside, Rudy, Field of Dreams and The Natural. Dennis was the first and only person I thought of for the lead role upon reading the script,” said Celentano. “There’s no doubt in my mind that he has the ability to play a loving, caring father while at the same time a staunch, powerful man – all the qualities needed to bring Pastor Hill’s character to life.”
“Since the 1970s in particular, the sports film has gained increasing recognition as one of the most important and popular genres in contemporary cinema,” added Quaid. “I couldn’t be more excited about this project. This film will no doubt further validate the power of American social mobility and show that in America you can choose to be what you want.”
Quaid is an Emmy nominee and two-time Golden Globe nominee best known on the film side for turns in Yours, Mine & Ours, In Good Company, The Day After Tomorrow, Cold Creek Manor, Far from Heaven, The Rookie, Wyatt Earp, Postcards from the Edge and other titles.
The actor’s recent TV credits include Netflix’s Merry Happy Whatever, Amazon’s Goliath and Fortitude, and Crackle’s The Art of More.
He’ll next appear in Alex Ranarivelo’s Born a Champion, Julio Quintana’s Blue Miracle, Andrew and Jon Erwin’s American Underdog: The Kurt Warner Story, Ray Giarratana’s The Tiger Rising, Sean McNamara’s Reagan, in which he’ll play the actor-turned president, and more.
Quaid is represented by UTA, Brillstein Entertainment Partners and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller.

“There are so few things in the world that you can stand up and scream from the rooftops and not care what anyone says, because you know there’s absolute right and absolute wrong,” says Sean Astin, who played Rudy Ruettiger in the quintessential underdog movie, “Rudy.”
“And it is an absolute right and an absolute truth that this score by Jerry Goldsmith is perfect. It’s a perfect score.”
Goldsmith’s music, a glorious paean to the unflagging heart, will be celebrated Saturday in a live performance accompanying a 25th anniversary screening of the 1993 film at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. “Rudy in Concert,” conducted by Justin Freer — the co-founder of CineConcerts, who studied with the late composer — will also feature a pre-show panel with Astin, director David Anspaugh, screenwriter Angelo Pizzo, producers Robert Fried and Cary Woods, Carol Goldsmith (the composer’s widow) and Ruettiger himself.

And just a few months ago we watched the rags to riches to rags true tale of Roberto Duran in Hands Of Stone. Now, or should I say, “…and in this corner”, is the saga of Vinnie Pazienza, a scrappy young fighter from a working class East Coast neighborhood. Ah, but he’s not just fighting other contenders. No, his story mixes the standard sports flick with the “struggling against a devastating medical crisis” drama. It’s a story so incredible that it has to be true (who could make it up?), as Vinnie shows the world that to defy the odds...

When you mix a talented young actor with the Oscar bait that is a boxing film, you almost always get an awards contender. This week, a new one opens in Bleed for This, which has Miles Teller in the lead role. Is it a lot like other recent boxing movies? Yes. Does that mean it’s not able to stand on its own? No, especially with how good Teller is. This flick obviously hopes to make a dent with Oscar at the end of the year, but whether or not that happens, it’s a worthwhile true life sports tale with a tremendous performance at its center. The film is based on the true story of boxer Vinny Pazienza (Teller), who staged one of the sport’s greatest comeback stories. A scrappy fighter who always took too many shots to the head, he also has had to deal with an overprotective family,...

MaryAnn’s quick take…
If there is something new to be said about boxing, Bleed for This doesn’t find it. Sucks all the energy out of a story that should have been a can’t-miss. I’m “biast” (pro): don’t mind a good boxing movie…
I’m “biast” (con): …but I’m not a fan of the sport
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
If there is something new to be said about boxing in a movie, Bleed for This does not find it. If there is something new to be said about incredible true-life tales of survival, Bleed for This does not find it. Does Our Hero defy the odds? He does. Does he climb his way back to success and make an unlikely comeback that nobody but nobody could ever have imagined? You bet. Does the human spirit triumph? Of course it does.

This was the weekend that nothing went as expected at the box office -- hinting that the multiplex may be in for a wild ride this winter.
Even though many predicted that none of this weekend's new releases were going to dislodge "Spectre" and "The Peanuts Movie" from the top two spots, those films still surprised. "Spectre" held on better than anyone thought, losing just 50 percent of last week's business instead of the 60 that many predicted, to finish with an estimated $35.4 million for the weekend. On the other hand, "Peanuts" was supposed to lose just 35 percent of last week's business, but it plunged 45 percent, to an estimated $24.2 million.
It's possible that "Love the Coopers" ate into the "Peanuts" family audience. Instead of debuting at $6 or $7 million, it earned an estimated $8.4 million, good for third place. Despite its unclear title, the movie was well-marketed; viewers knew that it was a Christmas-themed family comedy,...

Even those who love inspirational sports films might have to flinch from “My All American,” a movie so square, conservative and humorless that it winds up playing like a brutally straight-faced “South Park” parody of gridiron schmaltz, particularly in its last half hour, when the male weepie plot finally kicks in. Based on a true story, “My All American” was written and directed by Angelo Pizzo, who wrote the screenplays for two beloved sports pictures, “Hoosiers” (1986) and “Rudy” (1993). In the latter, Sean Astin‘s Rudy was too small to play football but was determined to get on the field through.

Well, the temps are dropping, and the leaves are changing. That can only mean one thing: better check on furnace. Or get the old rake out. Of course, that’s unless you’re a sports fan. Then, for the most part, it’s football all the time (just seems like it to the rest of us). And what better way to lure those fans away from their TVs and bars? Why Hollywood has been passing the ole’ pigskin for decades, even before sound (Harold Lloyd in The Freshman has quite a spectacular final game). There are comedies and dramas, the latter has mostly been the province of the true story. Jim Thorpe, All American (as was coach Knute Rockne) and Invincible to name a few. And, of course, there’s that much beloved crowd-pleaser Rudy. Well, all you gridiron movie lovers, here’s a new flick from the same fellow that penned that underdog story.

Angelo Pizzo makes his directing debut on “My All-American,” a movie about legendary 1960s University of Texas football star Freddie Steinmark that opens Friday, but he’s no stranger to the inspirational sports drama. The Indiana native wrote and produced two of the most beloved and critically praised sports movies ever, “Hoosiers” and “Rudy.” (The former even earned two Oscar nominations and was selected for the National Film Registry.) “Directing was different than anything I’ve done before in my career, and it was the best,” Pizzo, who is in his 60s, told TheWrap. From the writer of Hoosiers and Rudy comes a sports drama based on the true story of Ut Austin college football star Freddie Steinmark (Finn Wittrock) who, in 1969, after winning the national title, was faced with the biggest challenge of his life. In this heartwarming tale of grit and faith, Coach Darrell Royal (Aaron Eckhart) reflects back on Freddie’s journey from being determined underdog – supported at times only by the love of his parents (Robin Tunney and Michael Reilly Burke) and his high school sweetheart (Sarah Bolger) – to a hero both on and off the field.
My All American is directed by Angelo Pizzo, and the executive producers are Ben “Bud” Brigham, Rusty Walter, Paula Walter, Tony Jones, Carl Mazzocone, and Michael Bruegg. The film is produced by Paul Schiff. The screenplay is written by Angelo Pizzo, based upon the book Courage Beyond The Game: The Freddie Steinmark Story by Jim Dent.

Spectre – November 6
Director: Sam Mendes
Stars: Daniel Craig, Christoph Waltz, Léa Seydoux
Synopsis: A cryptic message from Bond’s past sends him on a trail to uncover a sinister organization. While M battles political forces to keep the secret service alive, Bond peels back the layers of deceit to reveal the terrible truth behind Spectre.
Analysis: The question on a lot of people’s minds going into Spectre will no doubt be “is it going to be as good as or better than Skyfall?” Skyfall was certainly an awesome Bond movie, but if there is one thing we can take away from oh say Quantum of Solace, it’s that we should take each Bond movie as a single experience and try not to compare them with each other. That’s what I do anyway and it really takes away from the expectations and makes for a more enjoyable time.

Forget “Rudy! Rudy! Rudy!” — fans will be chanting “Freddie! Freddie! Freddie!” this November. Finn Wittrock plays University of Texas football underdog and fan favorite Freddie Steinmark in “My All American,” which punted a trailer onto the web Thursday morning. If the premise and feel of the inspirational amateur sports story seems familiar, it’s because the film hails from writer-director Angelo Pizzo — the man behind both “Hoosiers” and the aforementioned “Rudy.” The trailer takes viewers from Steinmark’s high school glory days, through a frustrating college recruitment process, and eventually to a devastating leg injury after the undersized player has somehow.

Wittrock, coming off Noah and co-starring in the upcoming Angelina Jolie-directed Unbroken, plays Steinmark. A scrappy undersized defensive back, Steinmark was a standout player on the national-title-winning 1969 team, before his gridiron career was tragically cut short when he went to the hospital for a bone bruise and learned that he had a cancerous tumor that took his leg and ended his career. "Welcome to Indiana basketball."
You would be hard pressed to find a sports fan who didn't include tonight's primetime movie in a list of the best sports movies of all time, typically somewhere near the top. Though constructed on a rather formulaic underdog plot, the nostalgic setting of Hoosiers in a '50s-era Middle America town that cherishes its high school basketball team and the outstanding performances by Gene Hackman as the new coach with the troubled past and Dennis Hopper as the town drunk seeking redemption elevate the movie beyond cliché to timeless classic status.
Written by Angelo Pizzo and directed by David Anspaugh — the same creative team behind another sports movie classic, Rudy — Hoosiers was inspired by the true story of the Milan High School basketball team that won the 1954 Indiana state championship despite the overwhelming odds stacked against them. While away the first night of fall by...

Pizzo and producer Chad Verdi have filed dueling complaints over issues of payment and the delivery of the script. Escapism has always been a central draw of the movies, and in tough economic times, there’s no better racket to be in. In the 1930s, Hollywood churned out splashy musicals, romantic comedies, and gangster pictures by the thousands. In the past few years, low-risk tentpoles have become practically the only game in town. The 1980s weren’t an easy time to make your way in this world, so Hollywood helped moviegoers escape to something a little more tangible; something just out of reach, but theoretically possible to regain - the image of the 1950s. You know, that time when people were more decent and plain-spoken, particularly in a small town. That’s really the only way to do the 1950s. That’s the pure stuff, as they say. Just don’t mention all the racial and sexual hostility, because, well, then it wouldn’t be escapism now would it.

The first half of the 2000s looked like an ever-busy launching pad for writer-director Ben Younger. In addition to Boiler Room and Prime, the Brooklyn-born filmmaker also helmed a handful of short films. Virtually nothing industry-related, however, has been heard from him since the mid-2000s. Hopefully that will change for the better, as he’s signed on to direct Paz, an indie boxing biopic of “The Pazmanian Devil” Vinny Pazienza. [Variety]
The remarkable true story of Paz revolves around the boxer’s critical car-accident injury, which doctors diagnosed, at the time, as a wound of the career-ending variety. The original screenplay was done by Angelo Pizzo (Hoosiers, Rudy), another guy, like Younger, who’s been on an extended creative hiatus. Word is that Younger will polish the screenplay before shooting, which is scheduled to begin in September. Chad A. Verdi and Noah Kraft, meanwhile, are singed on as producers.
