Though Scandal wrapped up its seven-season run years ago, the show left us with one too many memorable moments. First there was Olivia’s (Kerry Washington) love life, which was all over the place, and saw her juggle tenderness towards Fitzgerald Grant ( Tony Goldwyn) with periodical affection for Jake Ballard (Scott Foley). Then there was her complicated relationship with Mellie (Bellamy Young), and her most prized possession: Olivia Pope and Associates (Opa). Second to Olivia Pope’s memory-worthy life was the thorn in her rose, Rowan Pope (Joe Morton). Through the seasons, he was not only a pain she had to

Shonda Rhimes is in many ways a television icon. For a while back there, Rhimes dominated Thursday nights with Scandal, Grey’s Anatomy, and How to Get Away With Murder, and did it flawlessly through her production company, Shondaland. In conversation with Oprah Winfrey and Kerry Washington, Rhimes said of meeting the real Olivia Pope: “ Betsy Beers, who is my producing partner, came to me and said, ‘There’s this woman named Judy Smith. You really have to meet her.’ And I was like, ‘ I have two shows. I’m too busy…okay, we’ll meet her for 15 minutes.’ We sat down

In another life, Gabrielle Union would have played Olivia Pope, the no-nonsense character created by Shonda Rhimes, who is a fixer in every way. In this life, however, around the time she auditioned for Scandal, Gabrielle Union got to learn of a different role, one in which she became synonymous; that of Mary Jane Paul on the BET series Being Mary Jane. Just like Pope, Mary Jane is powerful, independent, and in the limelight. She may not be in love with a president, but she sure does have one hell of a love life. Union brought Mary Jane to life

We say “surprisingly” because, as you may recall from TVLine’s breathless coverage, Beech already wrangled her costars for a virtual get-together in April. How many new stories could they possibly have to tell? … As it turns out, plenty.

What would Olivia Pope do? During an Oct. 4 virtual interview with Jimmy Kimmel Live, Kerry Washington—who has worked feverishly to encourage Americans across the country to vote—discussed how she's explaining the Presidential election to her children, Isabelle Amarachi Asomugha, 6, and Caleb Kelechi Asomugha, 4. "We talk a lot about the election in my house," the Scandal star explained. "We do talk about bad guys and good guys. Actor-producer Kerry Washington opened the third night of the virtual Democratic National Convention with a fiery warning about the stakes of the 2020 presidential contest between President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden.

Sen. Harris (D-Calif.), appeared at the top of the 9 p.m. Et hour — in the vein of a “Saturday Night Live” cold open — with a plea for viewers to set up a “voting plan” for Election Day, Nov. 3, by sending a text message to the Biden-Harris campaign.

As the Black Lives Matter movement took hold of the U.S., Kerry Washington could not help but remember filming “Scandal” while she was pregnant. “It’s impossible to not worry about the Black men in my life out in the world. My cousins, my dad, my husband. That is the reality of loving a Black person in America, is you open yourself up to the vulnerability of the danger that Black people face every day,” Washington says on Tuesday’s episode of the Variety and iHeart podcast “The Big Ticket.” “I think a lot about it because I remember begging Shonda [Rhimes] when I was pregnant, ‘couldn’t Olivia Pope be pregnant?’ Because I was like, ‘How are we going to hide this person inside me? Scandal closed up shop over two years ago, but it's a show that will forever be ingrained in the minds of television lovers.
One question that still comes up years after the series premiere is which leading man was the better choice for the leading lady, Olivia Pope. Were you Team Fitz or Team Jake?
Both men were deeply flawed, but there's a case to be made for both, and our TV Fanatics Jasmine Blu and Whitney Evans, got together to debate which leading man reigned supreme.
Jasmine: Why do you think President Fitzgerald "No Eyebrows" Grant is superior?
Whitney: First of all, I will ignore that dig because it's true. But, when it comes to President Fitzgerald's superiority, no matter what was happening and whatever craziness was being thrown at him (and he and Olivia together), he always loved Olivia. He showed that he was willing to put Olivia first.

Are Miles, Cara, and Rakesh one step closer to finding out who is behind the God Account on God Friended Me Season 2 Episode 18?
All signs point in that direction.
But if there's one thing I've learned about this series, it's that red herrings are aplenty.
Miles made it very clear that he's not going to let up on his quest for the truth, which is unfortunate for fans that have been dreading this storyline. You are going to have to buckle in and tag along for the ride.

Miles: I think the God Account is trying to help Ali by sending Kylie as a Friend Suggestion.
Rakesh: Yeah, that makes sense. Fix Kylie’s problem and...

“She’s the bad guy here, not me,” Elena Richardson says of Mia Warren late in the new Hulu miniseries Little Fires Everywhere. Elena — perfectly rich and blonde — cannot conceive of a story in which she is the villain. She considers herself a paragon of liberal virtue, someone who, for instance, proudly tells anyone who will listen that her daughter Lexie has an African-American boyfriend. How could she possibly be the bad guy?
The problem — for both Elena and, to a degree, for Little Fires Everywhere — is that Elena is the villain of her story,...

Whiskey Cavalier star Scott Foley has joined Fox’s ballet-centric dramedy pilot The Big Leap — but you shouldn’t expect to see him in tights anytime soon.
Inspired by a U.K. format, The Big Leap centers on a group of diverse underdogs from all different walks of life who attempt to be part of a competition reality series that is putting on a modern, hip remake of Swan Lake. “What they lack in the traditional dancer body type,” the logline reads, “they make up for with their edge, wit and desire to reimagine an iconic story to fit their own mold.

It takes until the third episode of “Little Fires Everywhere” for there to be a significant moment of peace. Izzy (Megan Stott), the youngest and most rebellious of four Richardson children, actually relents to her mother’s wishes and dresses like a “proper” teenager for a school dance. But when she walks downstairs, her shocked mother Elena (Reese Witherspoon) notices a tiny cut marring Izzy’s otherwise pristine appearance.
In just about any other scene of Hulu’s overwrought adaptation, this would be enough to start a fight — Elena would demand perfection, ordering her daughter upstairs to clean up, while Izzy would stubbornly defend the imperfection, mainly to infuriate her mother. The little cut would become a little fire, all to add more white-hot fuel to an already sensationalized inferno.
Instead, Elena takes Izzy upstairs and shows her how to shave her legs. That’s all. It’s a muted,...

Late in the run of an episode of “Little Fires Everywhere,” Hulu’s new literary adaptation, our attention is divided between two women in different situations, both of them precarious and pushing each past frustration and into something like rage. Suddenly, music swells, and a high-dudgeon, piano-driven, choir-backed cover of a pop song kicks in to signal the tension and the grand emotional sweep of the moments we’re witnessing. The song is Meredith Brooks’ “Bitch,” a Lilith Fair standard that seems as unsuited to the vastness of what we’re witnessing on-screen as to the operatic style in which it’s being performed.
It’s, in other words, a moment that exists in bad taste. And “Little Fires Everywhere” could use a lot more of that.
Adapted from Celeste Ng’s best-selling novel and drawing on the acting and producing talents of two superstars, “Little Fires Everywhere” is about...

After years of being talked about, Kerry Washington is ready to steer the conversation herself. The 43-year-old actor and producer spent the better part of last decade playing the brilliant Olivia Pope on “Scandal,” Shonda Rhimes’ buzzy political drama that brought Washington into millions of homes. But as the series wound down, she kept a canny eye trained on her future, and how she could make a difference in her industry and the world beyond it.
“I had such a beautiful, collaborative relationship on ‘Scandal’ with Shonda, and I think that made me feel like, going forward in my career, I only wanted to work on projects where I felt I could be heard,” says Washington. Perched on a chair in the San Vicente Bungalows, a sleek new Los Angeles clubhouse that places palm tree stickers over visitors’ phone cameras lest they try to document anything within, Washington is keenly...

“The category is ‘stand in your truth,'” Emmy winner Billy Porter said as he presented to his “Pose” comrades at the 13th annual Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards on Thursday afternoon.
Co-executive producer Janet Mock, and stars Mj Rodriguez, Angelica Ross and Hailie Sahar took the stage, acknowledging the importance of the moment — that a cast of black trans and gender non-conforming people could be honored at a Hollywood event, especially as the average life expectancy of black trans women currently stands at 35 years old. As Porter told Variety on the black carpet before the event and repeated on stage, “We’re not free until we’re all free.”
“For 50 years, Essence has recognized us in a culture that overlooks people like us,” Mock said onstage. “I hope our show provides a mirror to black girls everywhere, letting them know they’re worthy.”

The fact that USA Network’s new murder-mystery Briarpatch is set in a steamy Texas border town known as Saint Disgrace is a big clue about what’s to follow. It’s a conspicuously quirky setting for a conspicuously quirky show: a funky neo-noir full of eccentric characters that has atmosphere to burn. There’s plenty to like about the style of Briarpatch — premiering Thursday, Feb. 6 at 10/9c; I’ve seen the first three episodes — but I’m not sure there’s enough substance to go with it. It is undeniably clever… but it might be too clever for its own good.

And these lists are not in any particular order. They're in the order the entries were received by TV Fanatic staff, so don't read into them!
To qualify, a show that began in another decade had to be airing during the decade, run a larger number of seasons from 2010 through 2019 if it started before 2010 or run the entire decade. Here we go!

Olivia Pope's on-screen relationship with Fitz Grant on Scandal may have been . . . well, complicated, but Kerry Washington's relationship with her Irl husband Nnamdi Asomugha seems far more adorable than deplorable. Kerry is notorious private when it comes to her marriage and family, and though she and Nnamdi are rarely photographed or even seen together, the two tied the knot all the way back in 2013. According to the Daily News, the couple met after Nnamdi went with a mutual friend to see Kerry perform in Race on Broadway, and Kerry confirmed as much in an October 2018 interview with Marie Claire. "The last time I did theater, it completely transformed my life," she shared. "That's where I met my husband."
So who exactly is Kerry's husband? As well as being a former NFL cornerback who played for the Raiders, the Eagles, and the 49ers, Nnamdi is also a producer and an actor.

At a pivotal moment in Netflix’s “American Son,” Kerry Washington’s character reveals that her biracial son Jamal feels like “the face of the race,” existing only to explain to his mostly white private school classmates what it feels like to be black in America.

After finishing a seven-season run as Olivia Pope in ABC’s “Scandal,” Kerry Washington fully expected to take a much-needed break. But then the script for a play called “American Son,” by Christopher Demos-Brown, fell in her lap, and her plans soon changed, although with some trepidation.
“I was very resistant to the idea because I was tired and, for me, acting on stage is the hardest kind of acting you can do,” Washington said. “You don’t have a score, you can’t fix any problems in post, and you’ve got to get it right on the day in the moment. There’s nothing to hide behind. But for those same reasons, it’s also the most rewarding experience an actor can have.”

Sidney Poitier, Ava DuVernay, Kerry Washington, and other celebrities are remembering Diahann Carroll, the groundbreaking star of stage and screen after her daughter announced her death after a long battle with cancer Friday. The “Julia” and “Dynasty” star was the first African American woman to star in a non-servant role in a network television series. She was 84.

After six seasons and a historic Emmy win under its belt, “How To Get Away With Murder” will be signing off of ABC.
The Shondaland drama is one of only three left on the broadcaster, and one that has left an indelible mark not only on that network’s schedule but also on the landscape of television in general. Showrun by Pete Nowalk, the series often wrapped deep discussions on tough topics such as addiction, adoption, abuse, an HIV diagnosis and criminal justice reform with more salacious plots about murdered husbands, mysterious new students and complicated romantic relationships.
“I still believe, and I will say this until I go to my grave, that Annalise Keating [and] Olivia Pope are the greatest characters on TV,” series star Viola Davis, who became the first African American woman to win the lead drama actress Emmy for her performance as lawyer and professor Annalise Keating in 2015, tells Variety.
