Five years after the Conjuring Universe entry The Nun wracked up almost $366 million at the global box office, a sequel finally reached the big screen on September 8th. At the start of this month, The Nun II was given a digital release (you can get it at This Link). Now Deadline reports that the movie will be streaming on the Max service just in time for Halloween! The Nun II will be available to watch on Max as of October 27th.
The sequel didn’t replicate the box office success of the first film, but it still did quite well. As of this writing, The Nun II has earned over $257 million worldwide.
The Nun II is directed by Michael Chaves from a screenplay by Akela Cooper and the writing duo of Ian Goldberg and Richard Naing (The Autopsy of Jane Doe). The film has the following synopsis: 1956 – France. A priest is murdered.

“The Nun II” has set a streaming release date on Max just in time for Halloween weekend. The New Line horror sequel will hit Max on Friday, Oct. 27 so those looking for a new horror movie to watch before the spooky holiday will be in luck.
The latest film in the “Conjuring” universe and direct sequel to 2018’s “The Nun” opened in theaters on Sept. 8, so it marks a quick move to streaming even in the wake of the film’s box office success. It’s pulled in $257 million at the worldwide box office so far, which is under the $365 million that the first “Nun” movie pulled in but not too shabby for a budget under $40 million.
The streaming release no doubt serves to bolster Max’s visibility during a time of increased movie-watching as the Halloween season coincides with a surge in demand for horror films.

The Nun II is an gothic supernatural horror film directed by Michael Chaves and released in 2023. The screenplay is written by Ian Goldberg, Richard Naing, and Akela Cooper, based on a story by Cooper. This movie serves as a sequel to the 2018 film, The Nun, and is the eighth installment in The Conjuring Universe franchise. The cast includes Taissa Farmiga, Jonas Bloquet, and Bonnie Aarons, who reprise their roles from the first film, along with Storm Reid and Anna Popplewell joining the cast.
As a good sequel, “The Nun II” once again focuses on the elements that made the first one successful: lots of scares and a gothic atmosphere (they say now) with a photography style that emphasizes light and shadow.
Caravaggio’s tenebrism seems to still have its followers, as similar themes are combined, although this time with fewer distorted angles and more scares.

Denzel Washington is no match for this sister.
“The Nun II” topped the box office charts, earning a scary good $32.6 million this weekend from 3,728 locations. That was more than enough to topple Sony’s “The Equalizer 3,” which features Washington as a mysterious avenging angel, from the first place perch it held last weekend. “The Equalizer 3” racked up over $12.1 million in its second weekend to push its domestic gross to $61.9 million. Globally, the action sequel crossed $100 million at worldwide box office, bringing its haul to $107.7 million.
Though impressive, “The Nun II,” which is the ninth chapter in Warner Bros.’ ongoing “Conjuring” series, couldn’t match the high-water mark set by its 2018 predecessor “The Nun,” which opened with $53.8 million. The film sees Taissa Farmiga and Bonnie Aarons return as Sister Irene and the titular Nun, respectively, with newcomers to the franchise, Jonas Bloquet, Storm Reid and Anna Popplewell, rounding out...

Usually, it’s the director looking to push the boundaries on a given film. With The Nun II, it was the audience who demanded a more extreme version of the movie.
“People wanted more violence,” director Michael Chaves told EW, with a laugh. “There was already a good degree of violence and gore in the movie, but people wanted more of it. So, we did a little bit of additional photography and we ramped that up. It just goes to show how audiences are always changing, evolving. Even in the earliest version, it was more [violent] than what was in your traditional Conjuring movie. I think horror audiences have been on this journey, this horror renaissance, where they’ve seen a lot of horror movies, they’ve seen a lot of violence. It’s something they wanted more of and we gladly gave it.”
Looks like the extra work paid off.

The ninth and latest chapter in Warner Bros. “Conjuring” series is expected to open around to $31.3 million this weekend from 3,728 locations, a drop from the record-setting original movie but enough to surpass Denzel Washington and Sony’s “The Equalizer 3.” The 2018 “Nun” original scored the highest opening of a movie in the “Conjuring” universe with $53.8 million, and it’s the series’ highest-grossing worldwide with $365.5 million.

Unfortunately, Sister Irene doesn't know what audiences who saw the previous film already do, which is that Valak has been using Maurice "Frenchie" Theriault's (Jonas Bloquet) body as a vessel, as proven by the inverted cross embedded in his skin. You can’t keep a good demon down — not when they can still bring in the crowds.
You might have thought the title character met its end in 2018’s The Nun, having been fed the blood of Christ and all. But since that film became the highest-grossing entry in the Conjuring Universe, there was little doubt that it would return in a sequel featuring a Roman numeral in its title. Thus arrives The Nun II, bringing you more of the same, only with even more jump scares engineered by sadistic sound technicians who crank the volume up to 11 as if they were torturing lab animals.
Directed by Michael Chavis, a Conjuring veteran who previously helmed the entries The Curse of La Llorona and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (how was that last one not a parody?), this 1956-set installment once again features Taissa Farmiga as Sister Irene,...

After five years lying in wait, "The Nun" franchise is emerging from the shadows this weekend to scare moviegoers once again. "The Nun II" makes its theatrical debut this week, but some critics already got the chance to see the movie that marks a ccomeback for one of the Conjuring Universe's most prominent ghouls. Valak, the sinister demon played by Bonnie Aarons in "The Nun" films and "The Conjuring 2," is set to make a harrowing return in the new movie, which picks up the story of heroic nun Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) and her probably-possessed bestie Frenchie (Jonas Bloquet) four years after the original film's ending. Franchise newbie Storm Reid ("The Last Of Us") joins the cast of the sequel alongside "Chronicles of Narnia" alum Anna Popplewell.

Demonic Valak (Bonnie Aarons) is back in the black tunic and veil, different time and place in this second saga, but with greater evil intention. So too, is the horror genre’s abundance of Catholic guilt as The Conjuring Universe’s location switches from Romanian abbey to French boarding school, and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It director Michael Chaves takes the helm. Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) is also reunited with Maurice or ‘Frenchie’ (Jonas Bloquet) while joining forces with new characters to face off the demon in another Biblical battle.

It says a lot about the history of nunsploitation cinema that “The Nun II,” which opens with a scary ghost nun levitating a priest and setting him spectacularly on fire, is one of the more understated entries in the genre.
That’s not to say “The Nun II” is a subtle film, or a thoughtful film, or even a good film. It’s just that when you share space on the video store shelf with Ken Russell’s “The Devils” and Bruno Mattei’s “The Other Hell,” a bunch of cheesy random jump scares wrapped around a tepid storyline just doesn’t stand out much.
Even compared to Corin Hardy’s first “The Nun” movie — itself the fifth entry in the “Conjuring” franchise, with “The Nun II” now the ninth — Michael Chaves’s sequel is a major step down. Hardy’s stylish horror adventure was energetic enough to entertain despite its egregious silliness.

Michael Chaves’ The Nun II is regrettably a dull by-the-books Conjurverse entry. Corin Hardy proved incoming directors could shoot a Conjurverse movie without trying to imitate James Wan — 2018’s The Nun is a breath of fresh Euro-Hammer air. It’s a sequel that copies previous Conjurverse entries, lacks discipline, and overstays a nearly two-hour welcome like the rough draft of something tighter, trimmed, and better focused.

Now on its ninth feature entry in just a decade, the “Conjuring” franchise has proved something of a powerhouse in the continued growth of horror as one of the most reliably popular (not to mention cost-effective) mainstream film genres. Their mythologies may be garbled and silly, the scares mostly “jump” ones, yet these movies provide a kind of creepy comfort food — familiarly formulaic jolts unlikely to trouble any non-child viewer’s sleep later on — whose satisfactions are amplified by the good actors and superior atmospherics deployed.
Defying the law of diminishing returns, 2018’s spinoff “The Nun” was (and so far remains) the franchise’s biggest hit to date. Ergo enter “The Nun II,” a direct sequel. In some respects an improvement on its predecessor, in others not, this is finally one more good-enough if unmemorable entry sure to extend the series’ life in lucrative fashion.

This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the movie being reviewed here wouldn't exist.
Against all odds, director James Wan's "The Conjuring" movies somehow managed to hit that horror sweet spot. It takes a deceptive amount of skill to find that special balance between brutal, nightmare-inducing scares and a refreshingly uncynical worldview -- one that never took characters we actually came to love and subjected them to abject cruelty. Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson's performances as expert demonologists Lorraine and Ed Warren went a long way towards grounding such supernatural antics in genuine earnestness, and their absence immediately put 2018's "The Nun" at a creative disadvantage. Detailing the origins of the sinister demon Valak (Bonnie Aarons), the spin-off/prequel film was savaged by critics (it's mostly better than you remember!) despite delivering a...

Like a startlingly funny sermon delivered by your parish’s creepiest priest, “The Nun II” will leave you smiling despite yourself.
Director Michael Chaves helms this surprisingly clever ninth installment in The Conjuring Universe, and his third at-bat for the horror franchise created by James Wan just over a decade ago. With a story by recent genre genius Akela Cooper — and a script co-written by her, Ian Goldberg, and Richard Naing (“The Autopsy of Jane Doe”) — this smartly crafted sequel-to-a-prequel marks a long-awaited upswing for Warner Bros.’ steadily declining demonology epic.
The exposition-heavy whodunit isn’t much scarier than past installments, and it may not mark a permanent about-face for a franchise that’s been struggling since “Annabelle: Creation” (2017). But “The Nun II” proves an invigorating Second Coming for the returning cast painfully let down by the first “The Nun” (2018) — and a redemptive triumph for The Conjuring’s merciless Mother Superior,...

Early commuters were surprised to see seven nuns dressed in a demonic fashion this morning in London at several well-known landmarks. This signals the upcoming release of ‘The Nun II’ on September 8th, 2023.
Early in the morning, there were reports of frightening nuns near St Paul’s Cathedral. They later appeared on the Millennium Bridge, wearing their traditional habits, and even levitated across the Thames to scare commuters on the south side of the river. These nuns seem to have adapted to life in the city and were seen boarding a bus to Seven Sisters, presumably to return home and continue their mischievous actions.
And after evading discovery in the capital, the mystifying robed figures—appearing to defy gravity by the sea—were reported by a couple strolling on the beach by Seven Sisters Cliffs in East Sussex, with the nuns spooking people on the south coast too.

Do you remember the first time you saw The Conjuring? I certainly do. Since then, Warner Brothers have given fans a wild and entertaining cinematic universe based on the intriguing history of real-life couple Ed and Lorraine Warren. And with its tenth anniversary, fans and a few of those involved in the new sequel, had a celebratory night with The Nun II. It was the opportunity to present the film with all the spectacle and thrills of a premiere event but with only a few of the talent involved due to the current strike. Either way, my pal Cory Michael Dawson and I headed over to join in on the creepy activities at the Regal LA Live Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles.
Once we arrived on the scene, we noticed a large gathering of spooky nuns. And yes, they were everywhere. In the crowded theatre, they offered a red carpet and cool photo opportunities.

The Conjuring Universe is one of the most successful horror franchises of all time, with eight films that have grossed over $2.1 billion worldwide. The series is based on the real-life cases of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, who have encountered various demonic entities and haunted objects. One of the most terrifying creatures in the franchise is Valak, the demonic nun who first appeared in The Conjuring 2 and then got her own spin-off film, The Nun, in 2018.
Now, Valak is back to haunt audiences once again in The Nun 2, which is set to hit theaters on September 8, 2023.
