- Andrew Porter was born on August 26, 1928 in Cape Town, South Africa. He was a writer, known for Live from Lincoln Center (1976), Intermezzo (1983) and Massenet: His Life and Music (2000). He died on April 3, 2015 in Chelsea, London, England, UK.
- British writer on music, editor of the Musical Times (1960-1967), author of singing translations of more than 30 operas, and expert on Verdi. He gloried in the rediscovery of the full original version of "Don Carlos" in the Paris Opéra library, and is author (with David Rosen) of _Verdi's 'Macbeth': a Sourcebook_ (1984).
- His career as a critic began with contributions to newspapers including the Daily Telegraph and The Times (London). He also wrote for Gramophone magazine. His New Yorker reviews were collected into five books.
- As a teenager, he studied organ at University College, Oxford.
