Guy Ritchie’s spin-off television series to his 2019 film The Gentlemen was launched on Netflix earlier this month, and even though all eyes have been on the lead actor, Theo James, there’s a guest star who has had quite a deep connection with video games in the now-distant past.
Peter Serafinowicz stars as Tommy Dixon, who is the brother of Pearce Quigley’s John “The Gospel” Dixon, the leader of the Scouse crime family, which may have been an interesting role to play, but not everyone knows about his much more intriguing collaboration with FromSoftware nearly a decade ago.
In fact, Serafinowicz actually ended up voicing a character in a major Souls-like title after outing himself as a massive fan of the genre.

Just four years after the movie hit theaters, Netflix has turned Guy Ritchie's "The Gentlemen" into a TV show. The above teaser trailer for the series offers proof of that, introducing a drug empire, a cast of criminals, and some vintage Ritchie shenanigans.
The teaser admittedly doesn't dive too deeply into the story, but it does do a great job of capturing the vibe. It's all set to the tune of "Time of the Season" by The Zombies, with some welcome narration by Giancarlo Esposito, of "Breaking Bad" and "The Boys" fame. Esposito is just one part of a pretty well-stacked ensemble led by Theo James ("The White Lotus"). Blood, boxing, and quips, this has all of the hallmarks of a classic Guy Ritchie production. It certainly has a similar feeling to the 2020 movie, but it also feels designed to satisfy "Snatch" fans. The official synopsis for the show...

Peterloo is the latest film directed by British auteur Mike Leigh and is his second-period piece in the last five years, after his critically acclaimed epic Mr Turner, released in 2014. Premiering on what will be the 200th anniversary of the relatively unknown British tragedy of the same name, occurring in the year of 1819 in Manchester. It is a rather timely release considering only 200 years later the British people are once again in a traumatising political disposition considering the deliberating reasoning of Brexit, although I’m sure this is no coincidence on Leigh’s part. Peterloo covers the days and ultimately the harrowing event itself with a massive British ensemble with pretty much every single UK...

For much of its two-and-a-half-hour running time, Mike Leigh’s period epic “Peterloo” consists mostly of people talking — about what they need in order to be seen, to be heard, and frankly just to live. The last half hour depicts what happens when that kind of speech is cut off by the most disturbingly effective countermeasure: physical violence.
In 1819, a peaceful pro-democracy rally at St. Peter’s Field in poverty-stricken Manchester, England, became a massacre when charging infantrymen attacked the crowd with their swords. Whether you walk away from Leigh’s sacredly handled, no-nonsense slice of this history remembering the impassioned oratory of angry citizens or their murderous treatment by a cruel government is, on some level, Leigh’s own cinematic referendum on what we want from movies. Life as spoken up for, as passionately reasoned, or its opposite: death as grim spectacle?
Leigh makes talky films, after all, not action pictures.

For two filmmakers who have, for much of their careers, been bracketed as twin bastions of British social realism, Mike Leigh and Ken Loach have never had much in common. Where Loach has long worn his liberal activist’s heart on his sleeve, Leigh tends to tuck his politics into the folds of his movies, national crises of class tension and inequality needling through intimate domestic scenarios. So it’s chief among several surprises in “Peterloo,” Leigh’s vast, many-headed, boomingly angry historical epic, that it plays almost as his version of a Loach film. Strenuously detailing the many small orders of business that led to Manchester’s devastating 1819 Peterloo Massacre, which saw the British Tory government ordering a brutal military charge into a working-class crowd of peaceful pro-democracy protesters, it’s a stately, explicitly rhetorical paean to the people — setting the past in stone while also lashing out at a present-day political order.

This week Toronto and Venice will announce at least the first part of their line-ups and one title sure to land amongst the slate is the latest film by Mike Leigh. Following Mr. Turner, his new drama Peterloo follows the British government facing off against 60,000 during a protest in which 15 died with more having numerous injuries.
Ahead of a November release, the first trailer has now arrived, which sets the stage for the massacre. “There has never been a feature film about the Peterloo Massacre,” Leigh said. “Apart from the universal political significance of this historic event, the story has a particular personal resonance for me, as a native of Manchester and Salford.”
See the trailer below, courtesy of Amazon Studios, for the film starring Rory Kinnear, Maxine Peake, Pearce Quigley, Philip Jackson, Karl Johnson, Tim McInnerny, and David Moorst.

Two years ago, Amazon Studios established itself as a significant Oscar player, winning two of six bids for the domestic drama “Manchester by the Sea” as well as Best Foreign Language Feature for “The Salesman.” Last year, the streaming service found success with “The Big Sick,” which reaped a bid for its original screenplay. This year, it has partnered with various distributors to release three films with great Oscar potential.
Timothee Chalamet is following up his Oscar nominated performance in the gay romance “Call Me by Your Name” with the real-life family drama “Beautiful Boy” in which he portrays a meth addict who struggles to overcome his addiction with the support of his father (Steve Carell). The film is the first in English from Belgian director Felix Van Groeningen (“The Broken Circle Breakdown”). Luke Davies (“Lion”) adapted the best-selling pair of memoirs from father and son David and Nic Sheff.

If there’s one sure bet for the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, it’s the latest film by Mike Leigh. Most recently, the director stopped by the festival with Another Year and Mr. Turner, and now he’s finishing up his new film, Peterloo. The story follows the British government facing off against 60,000 during a protest in which 15 died with more having numerous injuries.
The first image has now been revealed, featuring Henry Hunt (Rory Kinnear) addressing the crowd of reformers as they gather at St. Peter’s Field ahead of the massacre. “There has never been a feature film about the Peterloo Massacre,” Leigh said. “Apart from the universal political significance of this historic event, the story has a particular personal resonance for me, as a native of Manchester and Salford.”

A new film by Mike Leigh is pretty big deal — at least for us — especially considering “Peterloo” is his first effort since 2014’s “Mr. Turner.” However, there’s been somewhat of a shroud of secrecy on the movie, the most ambitious of the director’s career.

A good cast led by Kelsey Grammer lifts this comedy about banking, as an old-fashioned British firm falls foul of a shark-like Us investor, out of the doldrums
Like The Big Short earlier this year, this feature by the British director Vadim Jean (best known for his debut, Leon the Pig Farmer) attempts to generate comedy from the banking world and the ethically questionable people who run it – not a subject that would lend itself to hilarity, you would think. This crack at the subject is fluffier, more traditionally sitcom-like than Adam McKay’s docu-comedy about the 2009 savings and loan meltdown, but it’s diverting enough to pass muster, thanks to a seasoned cast. Kelsey Grammer plays bumbler Charles Bunbury who’s been running Tuftons, an investment bank that’s been in the family of his wife, Penelope (Tamsin Greig), for years. Charles is no match for the coup plotted...

There’s a sudden appetite for Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” to become a transmedia spectacle. Filmmaker Danny Boyle is currently directing an adaptation of the classic Victorian novel for the National Theatre (with Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller alternating roles as Frankenstein and his Creature), which was also broadcast to selected cinemas around the world. And last night, BBC3 delivered the horror-musical Frankenstein’s Wedding (a modern spin on Shelley’s masterpiece), which went out live to the nation from Leeds’ Kirkstall Abbey, where 12,000 people had gathered to be part of the performance.
There was ambition to Frankenstein’s Wedding, that much is definitely true, but this live 80-minute spectacle was a mostly laborious and underwhelming flop. A great idea, but the execution didn’t fulfill its promise. Opening on Kirkstall Abbey (after a weird intro from DJ Reggie Yates) the live audience were playing the wedding guests for...
