Snack Shack is a movie written and directed by Adam Rehmeier starring Conor Sherry and Gabriel Labelle.
Like déjà vu, “Snack Shack” takes us back once again to adolescence and its familiar scenarios like growing up, friendships, the awakening of love, and money.
A film that charmingly transports us back to the 90s with a stylish photographic flair and solid performances from its two main leads… And not much more.
About the movie
Adolescence, yet again summer adolescence in a film that serves as a refreshing spring moment, and rather stays there: in a comedy that doesn’t quite want to be a full-fledged comedy and in a relationship of common landscapes that, while pleasant, are unvaryingly repetitive (we’ve seen the same movie for several generations now).
A proper recreation of the 90s that catches the eye with photography, shot in tones of the era that today, the younger ones might say,...

Astrakan (David Depesseville)
Astrakhan fur is unique: dark, beautiful, and stripped exclusively from newborn lambs, even ones killed in their mother’s womb. (Stella McCarthy once said it’s like wearing a fetus.) That ruthlessness—a sense of lost innocence; blood sacrifice—runs deep in Astrakan, a new film from France and one of the better in Locarno this year; and if that title isn’t enough to give pause, plenty else in the opening exchanges will. The first act is a procession of flags, both red and false: at the opening the protagonist, Samuel, lightly goads a snake in the reptile house of a zoo; moments later a rabbit is hung and skinned in his kitchen with all the ceremony of...

Can you remember how you spent your childhood summers? Were they by the pool eating concession stand junk? Biking everywhere you went? Fist-fighting your best friend? Falling for a girl from out of town? Something along those lines? Or maybe you just saw a movie like that. That kind of easy familiarity is what teen comedy “Snack Shack” comfortably sets up shop on. Armed with a talented cast, writer-director Adam Rehmeier’s 1991-set feature happily squares itself in a tradition of teenage hedonism and broad learning opportunities, settling into a generic but warm glow.
Early-20s actors Conor Sherry and Gabriel Labelle lead the film, stretching the laws of verisimilitude playing 14-year-old best friends, but emerging plausibly teenaged with their lame-brain rapport. The two play Aj and Moose, a pair of hustlers hunting for their next score after home-brewing a “drinkable as fuck” beer. When the friendly college-aged lifeguard Shane...

Every year, the /Film crew gathers together to debate, argue, and sometimes even agree on the 50 best moments of the year in cinema. The result: a mammoth list celebrating the best movie moments of the past 12 months. Incredible moments from great movies. Amazing scenes in overlooked films. Brilliant specks in otherwise bad films. They're all here, and they all represent a year that saw Hollywood and international cinema alike bounce back from the pandemic and deliver a slate of films that reminded us why we love this medium so much in the first place. Let's finally close the book on 2022 in style: with wood puppets and fighter jets, with multiverse-jumping and grisly horror kills, with "Rrr" and, well, "Rrr."
Naturally, this article is full of spoilers. To the brim. Overflowing, even. If it was released in 2022, it could be spoiled in the list below. Proceed with caution.

Our year-end coverage continues with a look at the best performances of 2022. Rather than divide categories into supporting or lead or by gender, we’ve written about our 35 favorites, period. Find our countdown below and start watching the ones you’ve missed here.
35. The Ensemble of Funny Pages
Owen Kline’s Funny Pages may be the sweatiest, stinkiest, most stress-inducing film you’ll ever watch, and you’ll be happy about it. Daniel Zolghadri (believably manipulative) plays a pushy, privileged teen who dreams of being a cartoonist, but the weirdo script buzzes largely thanks to an offbeat supporting cast. Standouts include Stephen Adly Guirgis as a larger-than-life art teacher, Miles Emanuel as a geeky deadpan Bff, Marcia Debonis as a cheeky public defender, and Michael Townsend Wright and Cleveland Thomas Jr. as the illegal basement apartment roommates from hell. But Matthew Maher, playing an unstable former comic book colorist our protagonist tries coercing into mentorship,...

It’s that time of year. Ahead of Sight & Sound’s once-a-decade poll launching later today, the 2022 lists are starting to arrive. One of our favorite annual traditions when it comes to the best-of-the-year movie list is a lineup that usually finds a more interesting path than all the various guilds and critics groups. The wonderfully eccentric director John Waters, whose eclectic tastes always includes a mix of the unexpected and underseen, hasn’t let us down this year with his top 10 films of 2022.
Published at Artforum, where one should click over to read his thoughts on each, his top 10 is topped by François Ozon’s Fassbinder reimagining and “Douglas Sirk perfect” Peter von Kant. Other selections include another film from François Ozon, Jerzy Skolimowski’s visually dazzling Eo, Luca Guadagnino’s Bones and All, starring Timothée Chalamet as a “butch twink,” and João Pedro Rodrigues’ Will-o’-the-Wisp, which “makes Titane seem tame.

Beaver Trilogy (Trent Harris)
For a 1979 local news segment, Trent Harris filmed an affable young man’s drag performance as Olivia Newton-John at a talent show in Beaver, Utah. A few years later, Harris retold the story of the “Beaver Kid” in two fictional shorts, the first starring a then-unknown Sean Penn, the second starring a then-unknown Crispin Glover. The feature-length sum of all three parts, Beaver Trilogy is a captivating portrait of an outsider, a meta odyssey into reenactment and exploitation, and a true cult masterpiece.

Born from a decision to combine two aughts-era sketches that weren’t quite working on their own, filmed in 2018, and debuted in 2020 at Sundance, writer-director Adam Rehmeier would be forgiven for just being happy Dinner in America is finally hitting the public. The result is more than the culmination of a lengthy artistic gestation, though—its content, humor, and heart all merge to deliver a piece with the potential for cult appeal that transcends the act itself. It’s a treatise on America, the blurred line between taboo and cruelty, and our collective fear of real individuality despite claims by both sides of the aisle to foster freedom. The outcasts get their day.

One of the more entertaining films I saw back at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival was the punk rock rom-com Dinner in America. Directed by Adam Rehmeier and produced by Ben Stiller and Ross Putman, the film surprisingly still hasn’t been picked up for a U.S. release, but it’s now arriving in the U.K. and the first trailer has landed for the occasion.
In a dreary Midwestern suburb, aggro punk rocker Simon (Kyle Gallner) finds himself on the run again after a bout of arson and a close call with the police. A chance encounter with the spirited and socially awkward Patty (Emily Skeggs) provides him a place to lay low. As the two embark on a series of misadventures, they begin to realize they have a lot more in common than they first expected.
Watch below.

Arrow Video’s August films include a brilliantly original American indie comedy, a pair of out-there arthouse masterworks, a rediscovered 70s horror creepfest, a terrifying Korean ghost story, and definitive, collectable editions of an awe-inspiring science fiction blockbuster.
The releases will come in limited edition packaging, with beautiful new artwork, pristine restorations giving the films a new lease of life, brand new expert commentaries and feature-length documentaries, reversible sleeves, as well as goodies including fold-out posters, art cards, books and illustrated booklets.
First in August, Arrow Video presents the mind-blowing ‘acid-western’ El Topo, which shocked and bedazzled audiences upon its controversial original release, single-handedly inventing the American midnight movie phenomenon. A countercultural masterpiece which ingeniously combines iconic Americana symbolism with director Alejandro Jodorowsky’s own idiosyncratic surrealist aesthetic, El Topo is an incredible journey through nightmarish violence, mind-bending mysticism and awe-inspiring imagery. A troubled punk singer and his biggest fan get into a series of scrapes in Adam Rehmeier’s likable indie dramedy
“Is weird cool?” “In your case, no.” This pert exchange summarises the style of writer-director Adam Rehmeier’s indie dramedy, with two very good lead performers whose unexpected chemistry gradually makes this film likable. It’s about an angry punk singer with a pyromania fetish and a lonely and nerdy young woman with Adhd who is his biggest fan.
Kyle Gallner plays John Q Public (real name: Simon), the lead singer of a band called Psy Ops who performs anonymously in a balaclava; off-stage, he has a vocal-fry badass voice, like Ray Liotta in GoodFellas. Simon is experiencing furious musical differences with the rest of the band and is making money through selling weed and taking part in big pharma medical experiments. Adam Rehmeier's Dinner In America is a punk-spirited romance with an anarchic energy that sees anti-hero Simon (Kyle Gallner) strike up an offbeat friendship with Patty (Emily Skeggs), a girl he meets by chance but who has a deeper connection to him than either of them first realise. Spiky comedy is blended with sweetness as the pair forge a connection, make some beautiful music together and raise a fair bit of hell in the process. Adam Rehmeier's latest film, which aptly shared the Rebels With a Cause award at Tallinn Film Festival this year, arrives with the anarchic energy of a cherry bomb tossed into the bathroom toilet of Middle America. His spiky screenplay has the outsider vibe of the likes of Ghost World and scathingly - and often scatalogically - spotlights family dysfunction while smuggling in a surprisingly soft-centred romance under the radar.
Simon (Kyle Gallner) could be the anti-heroes' anti-hero. He's drooling on a drug trial when we meet him, eating one of the hideous "dinners" that punctuate the plot. Before long, he's kicked off it and mooching a meal Beth (Hannah Marks) who also failed the trial. Over the course of dinner with her family, we'll learn Simon takes no prisoners with his attitude and, when in doubt, has a tendency to burn the whole thing down. Also, suburban homes have a heart of.

By all accounts everyone who virtually attended the Nightstream digital film festival had a great time. It was short and most certainly it was sweet. While we hope we do not have to do this type of event next year we are glad that it was a rousing success for our friends at the five collaborating film festivals: Boston Underground, Brooklyn Horror, North Bend, Overlook and Popcorn Frights. Adam Rehmeier’s Dinner in America was announced as the winner of the Audience Award. While that is awesome and there was a slew of awards given to short films from every festival's short film block the real winners are the benifactors of the event's charitable focus. Proceeds from the festival will...

The 11th edition of the Odesa International Film Festival has wrapped in a completely different setting to usual, as this year’s closing ceremony did not happen at the Odessa National Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet. However, as every year, it was still hosted by TV presenter, journalist and actress Yanina Sokolova and TV presenter Oleh Panyuta. The director said: “Many thanks to everyone involved in organising the festival. For me, this is an extremely touching moment, so.
Nightstream 2020 Review: Dinner In America, A Sweetly Chaotic Molotov Cocktail Of Dirty Punk Romance
When rough and tumble mysterious stranger Simon (Kyle Gallner) crosses paths with the socially awkward Patty (Emily Skeggs), they form an unusual bond that sends them careening toward chaos, and loving every minute of it in Adam Rehmeier's Sundance breakout feature, Dinner in America. We meet Simon in the process of getting kicked out of a pharmaceutical study, after which he promptly hooks up with a fellow drug study exile, heading back to her place for one of the most uncomfortable family dinners ever. When Simon's meal ticket's mother comes onto him, the whole family explodes and chases him out. Not the silent type, Simon takes off, but not without leaving a trail of flames...

With the 2020 Fantasia Film Festival wrapping up this week, here’s a look at the final three films this writer had the opportunity to screen during the virtual fest (and enjoyed immensely), including Natasha Kermani’s Lucky, Dinner in America from writer/director Adam Rehmeier, and Minor Premise, which was co-written and directed by Eric Schultz.
Lucky: If Natasha Kermani had been contemplating other titles for her latest film project, Gaslighting: The Movie would have been a wholly appropriate, albeit a very on-the-nose, choice as well. But Lucky works pretty damn well, too, as it is in reference to a moment in the film when the main character, May, is informed by her manager/agent that she should consider herself “lucky” after a professional opportunity works out to her advantage, instead of congratulating her for all of her hard work. But Lucky works pretty damn well, too, as it is in reference to a moment in the film when the main character, May, is informed by her manager/agent that she should consider herself “lucky” after a professional opportunity works out to her advantage, instead of congratulating her for all of her hard work. Truth be told, that’s the moment Lucky totally clicked for me,...

YouTube has given a pilot order to drama Dark Cargo, from Entertainment One and Canada’s Counterfeit Pictures and SEVEN24 Films. The project, which will be in consideration for YouTube Premium, is written by Adam and Max Reid (Sneaky Pete) and will be executive produced by Ben Stiller and Nicky Weinstock via their Red Hour Productions banner. eOne serves as the studio.
Dark Cargo is described as a high-octane, cliffhanger-driven, neo-noir thriller set in the big rig cab of Joe Dobbs as he traverses the darkest nights of his life. What begins as a random encounter with a disturbed stranger turns into a race against time, the police, and even more malevolent forces. All the while, Joe just wants to get back to his family.
Dark Cargo joins two other pilots at YouTube, comedies The Edge of Seventeen, based on the critically praised film of the same name, and It’s a Man’s World.

Content Media has added another tile to its market roster, taking worldwide rights to Adam Rehmeier’s action feature Save A Bullet For Me.
The film takes place in the late 1800s as two wounded frontiersmen make a last stand against young Braves defending their homeland.
Rehmeier will direct from his screenplay. Casting is underway and principal photography is scheduled to begin in the third quarter.
“This is a visceral ride, stripped down to the most primal fight-or-flight level possible,” said Rehmeier.
“For me, this film is an opportunity to combine several of my favourite genres in an exciting way, to create something that hasn’t been seen before in the cinema – and to tell an important and balanced story about a very particular moment in the Us’s history. I’m hoping the wall-to-wall action, the authenticity and intense emotion will captivate audiences worldwide.”

Adam Rehmeier, director of controversial feature The Bunny Game, is preparing to shoot a “hardcore” Western with the exec producer of Robert Redford’s The Company You Keep.
Vancouver-based Brightlight Pictures (The Company You Keep) has teamed with UK producer Mark Sandell to co-produce the ‘Western’ action horror Save a Bullet For Me.
It marks the latest feature from writer-director Adam Rehmeier, who sparked controversy with torture film The Bunny Game in 2010.
Brightlight Pictures’ Shawn Williamson joins Mark Sandell (A Liar’s Autobiography) to produce.
Save a Bullet For Me is due to be shot in British Columbia in late 2014.
Set in the 19th century, the film focuses on the aftermath of a brutal massacre, where two wounded frontiersmen make a desperate last stand against a native American war party.

Adam Rehmeier, director of the controversial The Bunny Game (2010) and the acclaimed Jonas (2013), is ready to pull the trigger on his next film, Save A Bullet For Me. This violent western / action / horror picture is slated to begin shooting later this year in British Columbia.
Rehmeier is no stranger to touching nerves and stirring outcry - The Bunny Game sparked protest worldwide, and was banned in the UK - and his new screenplay seems primed to continue the trend. Set in the Us during the 1800s, the blood-splattered film focuses on the aftermath of a brutal massacre, and two wounded frontiersmen who make a desperate last stand against a Native American war party. Digging into the dark underbelly of the human psyche can be an ugly business. Just ask any of those involved in the making of some of horror’s most notorious movies. As filmmaking and storytelling methods evolve, it allows more freedom to those who choose to explore areas that many would prefer remain hidden. But this often prompts us to ask rabidly debated questions like, ‘Just how far is too far?’
Way before the days when watching a film banned in your country was simply a matter of a quick illegal download to side step the censors, the MPAA and BBFC were much more of a force to be reckoned with. Now it seems that films are usually old news way before the censors can even touch them.

With cinematographer and 2nd unit director credits already under his belt, Adam Rehmeier burst onto the indie film scene with his feature film directorial debut, The Bunny Game (2012), in which Rodleen Getsic plays a desperate prostitute who ends up fighting for her life after hooking up with a maniacal trucker. The critically-acclaimed black and white film is somber, gritty, and saturated with panic and dread. Rehmeier's follow-up feature is something of a companion piece: Jonas (2013) is a brooding, sinister, and intelligent film that's as fascinating as the director's methods in creating it. Gregg Gilmore plays Jonas, who mysteriously washes up on a beach, then proceeds to gather an audience for "God's Big Message." Jonas will be released September 11th, and you can watch it in its entirety, absolutely free, at jonasmovie.com. Rehmeier generously took some time to discuss with FEARnet his unique films and his intriguing filmmaking tactics. FEARnet:...

Over the past few years of my movie watching career, a film has never tripped me up quite the way that The Bunny Game has.
No need to regurgitate all my ramblings and questions from that experience (go read it you wanker) but in case you missed it (you wanker) here is a summary...I don't know what to do with The Bunny Game. I'm truly still at a loss as to where I stand on it. Obviously there is no better way to try to solve your misgivings or confusion by talking directly to one of the stars of the film.
Rodleen Getsic is one of those rare human beings that isn't afraid to seize life by the balls and hold on. Her performance was one of the few things in The Bunny Game that did not leave me clueless and confused about myself and my stance on morality.

In the last 2 years, I've reviewed somewhere in the neighborhood of 200 films and home video releases for Twitch. The majority of these reviews are relatively easy to write. However, I also take some interest in writing the more challenging pieces about films which aren't so easy to categorize as simply good or bad. These films often broach the boundaries of good taste and common decency, but still manage to create something worthwhile to the right audience. I don't claim to be the audience for every film, but I like to think that I can be dispassionate about films which may succeed on their own terms, but which do not necessarily inspire a positive reaction from my own gut. Hyper-realistic to a fault, reminiscent of the neo-realist films that came out of post-ww II Europe, but also repressive and redundant in the extreme, with the characters seeming to throw the same temper tantrum for two hours straight while the story, meanwhile, seems stalled. Junkie hooker Sylvia Grey turns the wrong trick in demented trucker Jr. After knocking her out cold and taking her to a desolate place where no one can hear her cries, Jr subjects Sylvia to a series of increasingly twisted, sadistic "games". But will she survive the ultimate test when she wakes up with her head sealed in a white bunny mask?
I've heard a lot of uncomfortable whispers about Adam Rehmeier's The Bunny Game lately. The kind of whispers where people boast of its power to disturb and then the even quieter displays of acclaim and meaning the film just might have. Whether or not The Bunny Game does hold within its running time a symbol of deeper meaning is hindered by the fact that at least 75% of the horror movie watching population probably won't make it past the first 35 seconds.

After knocking her out cold and taking her to a desolate place where no one can hear her cries, Jr subjects Sylvia to a series of increasingly twisted, sadistic “games”. But will she survive the ultimate test when she wakes up with her head sealed in a white leather bunny mask?...
