Longtime Comcast executive David Cohen is stepping down from his operational role overseeing public policy, government relations, diversity and other key corporate functions for the media giant.
Comcast said Thursday in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing that Cohen, senior executive VP and chief diversity officer, will step down from his operational responsibilities as of Jan. 1, and transition to serving as senior counselor to Comcast chairman-ceo Brian Roberts as of Dec. 31, 2020.
Comcast said the plan is for Cohen to gradually transition his responsibilities to other senior managers in the company during the next year. As of 2021 he will segue to an advisory role for Roberts.
Cohen has been with Comcast since 2002. He’s been the face of the company in Washington, D.C. as it has waged a range of regulatory battles, from net neutrality to lobbying for Comcast’s M&A priorities over the years. He has also become a trusted advisor to Roberts.

Chicago – When Olympian Jackie Joyner-Kersee and Comcast Senior Executive VP David L. Cohen gather the press corp to represent the company’s “Internet Essentials,” it’s sure to become a benefit for the City of Chicago. The Essentials program seeks to close the “Digital Divide” – the gap for web access in poorer communities – and bring the internet to everyone’s home.
The program has been an amazing success so far. In the five years of Internet Essentials, Comcast has connected 750,000 families nationwide, with 43,000 families (172,000 people total) newly plugged into the web in Chicago. In addition to the connections, Jackie Joyner-Kersee (National Spokesperson for Internet Essentials) and David L. Cohen announced that $125,000 will be earmarked toward the creation of a computer lab within the Chicago Housing Authority (the public housing agency), a mobile learning lab and access to digital literacy training. At the conclusion of her lengthy interview with Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-ma) Thursday night, Rachel Maddow asked a million-dollar question that got a two-second response and a steely glare. Warren has been playing politician-coy whenever she's asked if she's interested in being Hillary Clinton's running mate, but Maddow framed the question brilliantly, asking Warren if she feels she could fill the role of commander-in-chief if she had to, and pegging it to Ed Rendell's assertion that she could not.

While many liberal Democrats, along with party leaders like Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-nv), are pushing Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-ma) as a vice-presidential pick who could help Hillary Clinton retain some of the Bernie Sanders wing of the party, prominent loose-lipped Hillary surrogate and former Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell may have thrown a monkey wrench into the works by telling a local Philadelphia radio station that Warren is not qualified to fulfill the most important requirement of a vice president.

So, what's on your mind these days? Maybe you're looking ahead to the general election or pondering the nature of judicial activism. Whatever the case, recent events make me pause, as I do often, to think about how much time we spend reading and listening to speculation and predictions from pundits-- that curious cadre of people we've installed in our society, on our talk shows and on our RSS feeds and newspapers who tell us what to think. Whatever one thinks of them, there's little question that these bearers of blood pressure do a very effective job of inflating the deeply contingent nature of reality and making us worry. In my industry, one of our trade magazines reported that the deployment of the words "double-dip recession" which crested at a frenzied 230 articles per week last year has now subsided to under 40 in February of 2012. Los Angeles -- It was a storybook marriage in 1986 on a spring weekend on Cape Cod that united a princess of an American political dynasty, Maria Shriver, and the gap-toothed muscle-clad movie star famous enough to be known by one name, Arnold.

Hello, Zoners, and welcome to the first episode guide of 2011! I love a show that starts with Stephen so bubbling with joy that he has a hard time slipping back into “Stephen” when the show starts. Oh, how I’ve missed that smile – it truly is contagious. We’ve covered Stephen’s appearances at the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in the past, and have always enjoyed seeing him supporting the worthy cause. However, I share his frustration in what seems like a waste of charity money for the charity to be throwing at lawyers. I would hate to think that I donated to what I thought was a charity doing good to the world, only to find out that so much money was...

Monday, January 3rd: Governor Ed Rendell:
Former mayor of Philadelphia Ed Rendell has been Governor of Pennsylvania since 2002. He’s a major player in the Democratic Party and a member of the Democratic Governors Association who has advocated the use of slot machines to reduce taxes, cut administrative costs, and quadrupled the number of minority- and women-owned business in his state. A huge sports fan, Rendell recently criticized the NFL for cancelling the Philadelphia Eagles/Minnesota Vikings game due to the blizzard, claiming that “we’re becoming a nation of wussies.”

Crystal Techanand was sitting on the couch next to her husband, Elijah, watching the movie Inception, and weathering the blizzard in their Trenton, New Jersey, home when Crystal knew she couldn't wait any longer. "We have to go now," said the pregnant woman, at 6 p.m., the height of the winter storm. The couple raced to their Nissan Maxima, a neighbor helped push the car down the street, and they slowly made their way to the hospital as good Samaritans helped them by clearing the road in front of them. Our alleged nation of wussies is about to be rewarded for its alleged wussiness with the first Tuesday night NFL game in 64 years. Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell called us a "nation of wussies" after the NFL delayed Sunday's scheduled game between his beloved Philadelphia Eagles and the Minnesota Vikings in anticipation of a blizzard. Philadelphia turned out not to be as badly hit as some neighboring areas, but no one could have predicted that before the game. "It's an absolute joke. I was looking forward to this. It would have been...

Gov. Ed Rendell thinks we're becoming a "nation of wussies" for delaying the Eagles-Vikings game because of the blizzard not "in any way, shape or form a blizzard." The Pennsylvania governor went on Fox's Philadelphia station, saying it was a "joke" that the football game had been scrubbed, saying that football fans were smart enough to make their own decisions about getting safely to the stadium--and, he believes, for braving a few inches of sno...

Fox News' Democratic analysts have thrown President Obama under the bus: Doug Schoen and Pat Caddell suggested this weekend that the Democratic Party must cut off its head to stand a chance in 2012. Schoen was back on America Live earlier today to defend his point of view from former Gov. Ed Rendell, who found the proposition premature and borderline problematic.

Awkward! Last night Governor Ed Rendell appeared on CNN's Parker-Spitzer program to discuss -- what else -- the midterm elections of 2010. The mundane appearance took a rather unfortunate turn as Mr. Rendell made an awkward farewell to the co-hosts wrapping up the segment. "Have fun with that younger woman," the Governor said to Eliot Spitzer, in reference to Kathleen Parker, to which Mr. Spitzer replied "dangerous words!" Watch the video after the jump.

New York -- The governors of New York, California and Pennsylvania have expressed their support for the planned acquisition of a 51% stake in NBC Universal by Comcast Corp. and urged the FCC to approve the deal swiftly and without "extraneous" conditions.
In their letter to the FCC, David Paterson (N.Y.), Arnold Schwarzenegger (Calif.) and Edward Rendell (Pa.) highlighted that the entertainment and cable giants have their most substantial business presence in their states and that Comcast has committed to growing NBC Uni's business instead of focusing on job cuts.
"The interests of the nation and our states will be well served if the relevant agencies move expeditiously and with a clear focus on the merits of the deal, and if they avoid delaying forward progress or imposing extraneous conditions," the governors' letter said.
In expressing their "strong" support for the planned transaction, the governors also said that the deal...

Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell was a guest on Fox and Friends this morning, for what turned into a spirited discussion over both the Tea Party phenomenon, and the media's role in helping shape it. When host Gretchen Carlson challenged the Governor over his assertion that this story has been overreported, Rendell stuck to his guns, saying of Fox News "you guys deserve more credit for marshalling that anger than the Tea Partiers do."...

Last night Rachel Maddow and Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell discussed the other big rallies and protests taking place around the country by people who are actually angry their government isn't doing enough. Rendell thinks the Dems are at fault for losing the argument to the Tea Partiers because they have been unwilling, or afraid, to speak out about what they believe in. "Show some guts!"...
