Every Sex and the City fan will instantly recognize two high-wattage looks up for sale in the latest event presented by Julien’s Auctions — one piece worn onscreen by series star and executive producer Sarah Jessica Parker — as they’ve transcended the function of costumes or fashion to become part of the show’s enduring iconography.
“Unstoppable: Signature Styles of Iconic Women in Fashion” is indeed an apt title for an upcoming auction that includes the three-tiered belted tutu skirt worn by Parker in Satc‘s opening credits (and again in the 2008 movie). The skirt was famously purchased by the show’s costume designer, Patricia Field, who discovered the piece in a $5 bargain bin and fashioned it into one of the most-recognized looks in the series.

Bill & Ted Face the Music is Out Now! Excellent! (Loud screeching guitar solo). And really, the dim time-traveling duo have returned just when we need them the most. Since first making their debut in the 1989 sleeper hit Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, these characters — portrayed with glee by Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves — have become that unique thing: A sci-fi/comedy franchise that somehow is both a cult sensation and a mainstream success. Following the unexpected success of the first film, the sequel Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey was released in the summer of 1991. Fans expecting more of the same were instead treated to a rumination on life and death that featured everything from aliens to evil robot doppelgangers of our leads. But the inventiveness of Bill and Ted creators Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon worked against him, and the film went underappreciated during its original run.

Oh man, good ol’ Society, what a history we have together! There was nothin’ quite like those halcyon days of yore, when as a lowly vid-joe store employee I handed my mainstram horror lovin’ customers a copy of this lil’ sick ticket item when asked for a recommendation. They’d return this sh*t with the quickness, slam it on the counter without makin’ eye contact, then try to avoid the ol’ Ouija Board Kid on all future visits. I mean, really, was one massive incestuous orgy with faces blastin’ forth from anuses too much?...

If you are old enough to remember the good old days of renting out horror movies on videos you’ll remember the joy of watching the trailers for new releases, even if you’d seen them many times before. There was a lot of work put into them and they did their job well. One I always remember seeing and it left me wanting more was the trailer for Society, just a shame I never managed to get it. Now though, with Arrow Video’s Blu-ray release, I finally get to see the film in all its gory glory.

Many casual cinema-goers can name their favorite actors, actresses or directors, but not many outside of the industry have a favorite editor. I've often wondered why editors don't seem to get as much credit for the success of a film the same way that directors do. They are, after all responsible for putting a film together, perfecting its flow and artfully connecting the different components of the story, even if they are under the director's instruction. Vsevolod Pudovkin was a director and actor during the birth of the moving pictures. But according to actor-writer-director Evan Richards, Podovkin's biggest contributions to the world of cinema are his editing techniques. Pudovkin wrote,"Editing is not merely a method of the junction of separate scenes or pieces, but is a method that controls the 'psychological guidance' of the spectator." Take a look at Richards' video that lays out Pudovkin's five editing techniques which...

Back when I manned the horror section of the video store I worked at, anytime I’d find a customer skimming through all the “S” titles with mild frustration, 99 percent of the time, I knew exactly what it was they were looking for. And when I would finally ask, my suspicions were confirmed. “Do you have ‘The Silence Of The Lamb’”? To which I’d always reply, “Ah, the Hannibal Lector movies are all in the ‘mystery/thriller’ section.” And usually this would spur a conversation with that customer that would begin with, “Really? I always thought the Hannibal Lector movies were horror!” And it got me thinking about a handful of other titles that horror fans might not even think to hunt for in the “mystery/thriller” section. There are the obvious choices like Se7en or Misery. Then, there’s also stuff like The Sixth Sense, which yes,...

I love it when people email me recommending films they think I might like based on my past reviews. Last year, I received that type of email recommending TiMER on Netflix Instant (which has since gained a small following -- I saw it in the top 100 rentals on iTunes just this last week), and last December, a very nice reader named Marilyn suggested that I might like the British romantic comedy, In a Day, which is also currently available on Netflix Instant.
It took me four months to finally get around to watching In a Day, but Marilyn was right. And if you're feeling beholden to your Netflix queues right now, let me assure you that there's little more enjoyable and liberating than completely ignoring the stack of titles piling up in your electronic queues and stumbling, instead, into a hidden gem, particularly one that's an absorbing and briskly paced 84 minutes long.
