Japan Latest To Remake Simon Cowell’s ‘Got Talent’
Japan’s Abema TV has become the latest to order a version of Simon Cowell’s Got Talent franchise. Airing next year, Yoshimito Kyogo will produce the local version of the hit format, which has been remade in 72 territories and sees performers of all varieties attempt to impress a panel of celebrity judges and global audience with their talent. Judges will be comedian and actor Masatoshi Hamada, actress Alice Hirose, musician Gackt and producer Takayuki Yamada. The show has been a huge hit over many years for ITV in the UK, where it was created by Cowell’s Fremantle-backed Syco Entertainment and is licensed by Fremantle. The deal was brokered by Fremantle’s Katsuhiko Waza, who is Senior Vice President, Distribution, Japan; Paul Ridley, Senior Executive Vice President, International Distribution; and Stephen Flint, Director of Operations, Global Entertainment Production.

Red Arrow International managing director Jens Richter will join FremantleMedia International as CEO, taking up the post that was vacated in July by David Ellendery. FremantleMedia International confirmed the appointment today, after Broadcast got the jump, saying Richter will join once he completes his contract at Red Arrow, the global sales arm of Germany’s ProSiebenSat.1. Richter has been with Red Arrow since 2004, when the company was known as SevenOne International. He has overseen worldwide distribution of such shows as cooking competition The Taste, Netflix’s Lilyhammer and the recent Endor-produced BBC series The Escape Artist with David Tennant. Jens Richter, the head of ProSiebenSat.1’s international production and sales operation Red Arrow, has been named the new CEO of FremantleMedia International, taking over the position left open when David Ellender exited the post earlier this year. Fremantle confirmed that Richter would be taking up the job when his current contract with Red Arrow expires. In the interim, Fmi’s regional EVPs, including Jamie Lynn, Lisa Honig and Paul Ridley, will run the group’s day-to-day business with oversight from FremantleMedia International’s COO Bob McCourt. LONDON -- FremantleMedia has restructured its Asia Pacific personnel in an indication of the region's increasing significance, FremantleMedia Enterprises CEO David Ellender said Monday.
The distributor of such brands as "American Idol" and "Project Runway" said that Paul Ridley has been promoted to senior vp sales, Asia Pacific from his current role of vp sales. Based in FME's Sydney office, he will be responsible for television distribution across the region and report to David Ellender.
Ganesh Rajaram, currently sales director, Asia, has been elevated to the newly created position of vp sales, Asia. He will continue to be based in FME's Singapore office and, as before, report to Paul Ridley.
In FME's ancillary rights business, Jon Penn has been promoted to senior vp licensing, Asia Pacific. In this position, he will oversee the exploitation of FME brands off-screen including brand licensing, music publishing, participation TV, online, interactive, sponsorship, live events and telephony across Asia Pacific. Penn will continue to be based in Sydney and will report to David Ellender.
