Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
As per my Thursday update, M. Night Shyamalan’s thriller Split ended up winning the weekend but with way more than anyone, including myself, predicted, with more than $40 million for its opening weekend. That’s pretty impressive, and his first movie to open at that level since 2010’s The Last Airbender. Meanwhile, Vin Diesel’s sequel xXx: The Return of Xander Cage ended up making around where I predicted, taking second place with $20.1 million, not a great sign for the continuation of that franchise. Michael Keaton’s The Founder ended up right around where I predicted with $3.4 million, ending up just outside the Top 10. Hidden Figures, La La Land and Sing continued to do well with minimal drop-offs.

Law & Order: Svu is always at its best when it examines the nuances of trying to get justice for rape victims in a broken legal system.
Law & Order: Svu Season 18 Episode 2 tries to do just that. "Making a Rapist" does a good job of showing how the penal system doesn't work, especially when cops get it wrong.
However, it is as problematic as it is enlightening.
The opening scene was a nice nod to Mariska Hargitay's real-life advocacy work. She has, among other things, led the charge to reduce the backlog of rape kits so that victims can seek justice faster. Joe Biden's cameo was so true to her real-life work that I expected him to slip up and call Olivia by the actress' name.
It was all downhill from there, both for the characters and the themes of the episode.
Unpleasant and tragic, but well-done.

Taylor Lautner walked hand-in-hand with his new girlfriend, Canadian actress Marie Avgeropoulos, as the two headed into Jay-z’s concert in Los Angeles on Monday night.
Taylor Lautner Dating Marie Avgeropoulos
Lautner, 21, and Avgeropoulos, 27, met and began dating in July on the set of Tracers, a thriller that’s due in theaters sometime in 2014. In the film, Lautner plays a bike courier who gets mixed up in some shady business with the Mafia. He evades them with her parkour skills and eventually meets Avgeropoulos's character, who runs a street gang that can help him get out of his mess.
Taylor Lautner on the set of 'Tracers'
Like in Twilight, Lautner’s Tracers’ character is in a love triangle. This time, his love interest played by Avgeropoulos is already in a complicated relationship with one of the street gang members. Maybe this time his character will get the girl.

It seems Paul Ws Anderson is ready for a busy year. Not only is he currently preparing to shoot historical action-fest Pompeii (as evidenced by the casting ramp up), he’s apparently decided to officially take the director’s chair for Resident Evil 6.Anderson, who kicked off the franchise, has overseen it as producer and returned to direct 2010’s Afterlife and last year’s Retribution, was always likely to be back, especially since the sixth film appears to be the conclusion to the second trilogy. And, if we’re honest, he’s so ingrained in the Evil series, he could direct these things in his sleep.Milla Jovovich (aka Paul’s better half) will be back as Alice in the film, which will be tasked with carrying on from where Retribution left off. Which – spoiler alert if you’ve yet to see it – leaves Alice in the White House standing...

Resident Evil Retribution
Stars: Milla Jovovich, Sienna Guillory, Michelle Rodriguez, Bingbing Li, Boris Kodjoe, Johann Urb, Kevin Durand, Shawn Roberts, Colin Salmon | Written and Directed by Paul W.S. Anderson
Back for a fifth installment (who knew the series would last his long?), Resident Evil Retribution continues the story of Alice and her battle against the Umbrella Corporation.
Now I’ll admit, the Resident Evil franchise lost me after the second film so revisiting the series for the fifth film may not have been such a good idea… But the opening sequence got me up to speed pretty quickly with a re-cap of everything that had come before – including a seemingly out of place rehash of the original film, a rehash which would however foretell the return of the Red Queen!
This time round Alice is captured by the Umbrella Corporation after a huge battle at sea. She awakens in...

Contrary to popular belief, the “Resident Evil” movies aren’t just about Milla Jovovich in tight black pleather fighting hapless zombies or masked henchmen for 90 minutes. There are actually stories to these movies, as this latest 3-minute-plus featurette will attest. Okay, so it’s mostly just Milla Jovovich in tight black pleather going around fighting hapless zombis and masked henchmen and the occasional castmember with dialogue for around 90 minutes. Look, if you plan on seeing this movie on opening day, let’s face it, “story” is the last thing on your mind. Please to enjoy. In the fifth movie, Alice returns once again to fight alongside a resistance movement in the continuing battle against the Umbrella Corporation and the undead. This time around, the undead have been taught to drive cars and shoot machineguns. Yeah. Also starring Kevin Durand, Michelle Rodriguez, Sienna Guillory, Oded Fehr, Johann Urb, Bingbing Li, Shawn Roberts,...

Eight new images have been released for Resident Evil: Rertribution, one of which gives us our first look at Kevin Durand as Barry Burton. I really hope Paul W.S. Anderson does a better job this time around with the story and use of 3D. As much as I've enjoyed watching this film franchise, that last film really sucked. This one looks much better, but only time will tell if it is or not.
The movie also stars Milla Jovovich, Michelle Rodriguez, Sienna Guillory, Kevin Durand, Shawn Roberts, Colin Salmon, Johann Urb, Boris Kodjoe, and Li Bing Bing. It blasts its way into theaters on September 14th! Out of all the Resident Evil movies that have been made, which one is your favorite?

Paul Ws Anderson seems to have turned suiting his other half (that would be Milla Jovovich) up in black leather and latex into a sort of family tradition. Every two years, she dons constricting outfits and they make another Resident Evil movie. The latest, Retribution, arrives on September 28 and the latest trailer can be experienced below.Retribution promises more of the same from Anderson and his team, which means that those who have enjoyed what’s gone before will be delighted and those sick to the back teeth of the undead franchise will pretend it doesn’t exist. This time around, we get to dig a little bit into Alice (Jovovich)’s past, both in terms of discovering some misapprehensions about her origins and alongside returning actors such as Michelle Rodriguez, Sienna Guillory and Oded Fehr. And the nasty Umbrella Corporation seems closer than ever to realising its goal of total destruction,...

"Dark Shadows" director Tim Burton will be adapting a haunted gothic novel about a dark family tragedy (shocking, we know), "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children."
The story comes from author Ransom Riggs' book of the same name that feels similar to Edward Gorey by way of a vintage photo nightmare depicting … peculiar children (a few of the misfits include a girl who had the ability to hold fire in her hands, another who always levitated off the ground, and there were twins who could talk without actually speaking … ). Teenage Jacob visits the home in question, located on a remote island off the coast of Wales. Once there he realizes that the abandoned abode holds a darker and more dangerous secret than previously imagined. Get more on the news over here. The lovely Milla Jovovich has been at it again. Tweeting her little heart out during production on the newest 'Resident Evil' installment. The hottie has posted up a couple of new behind the scenes stills from 'Resident Evil: Retribution' which reveal a peek at Jovovich as 'Alice' in make-up plus a pic of fellow co-star Li Bingbing as 'Ada Wong'. Director Paul W.S. Anderson is like the anti-Christopher Nolan when it comes to secrecy on his films. Star of the 'Resident Evil' series, Milla Jovovich has been the main source of all information coming out of the latest entry, 'Resident Evil: Retribution.' There is no need for random photographers or press releases when Jovovich is around. In between takes as the zombie thumping heroine, Alice, she starts roaming around with her camera. Jovovich revealed a little over a week ago that the role of Ada Wong went to none other than 'The Forbidden Kingdom' actress, Li Bingbing. While Jovovich couldn't provide a shot of Bingbing in Ada's trademark red dress, she did post a shot of the actress with her hair all done up for the role. Check it out below. That's not all, though. Jovovich also captured and posted an action scene being filmed.

Urb (ABC’s Eastwick and 2012) "plays the leader of the Resistance, who teams with Jovovich’s Alice character as she battles the Umbrella Corporation and the swarm of undead." Anderson wrote the script and is producing with Jeremy Bolt, Robert Kulzer, Don Carmody and Samuel Hadida.
I actually enjoyed the last film, it was the best of the franchise aside from the first one. This is shaping up to be awesome. What are your thoughts?...

Westerns don't usually do too well but, if done right, audiences respond. In 1988 and 1990, buoyed by a cast of hot young (then) actors (including Kiefer Sutherland and Charlie Sheen) and a fantastic soundtrack, Young Guns showed that westerns could be cool. Now, with the success of True Grit and Rango, the indie The First Ride of Wyatt Earp is trying out that Young Guns playbook. The story will be about a reporter interviewing a senior citizen Earp about his legendary days as a marshal in the Wild West and they'll show the story about his rounding up a posse to find the outlaw that unintentionally killed the woman he loved.
Val Kilmer will play the elderly Earp; he played Doc Holliday in Tombstone and the title character in the TV movie Billy the Kid. The reporter is Daniel Booko (he's been on "iCarly," "Hannah Montana" and "The Suite Life of Zack and Cody,...

Looks like the studio is anxious to get “Resident Evil 4: Afterlife” out there. The film is scheduled to go into production as early as this week up in Toronto, according to THR. As previously reported, Milla Jovovich returns as the franchise’s star, once again playing Alice, the zombie fighter turned superpowered chick (as seen in “Resident Evil: Extinction”). Also back is Heroes’ Ali Larter as Claire Redfield, one of the survivors that Alice befriends in the previous film. The film will introduce new blood in Prison Break’s Wentworth Miller, who will be playing Claire Redfield’s brother, described as a fighter pilot. In the game, Claire’s brother was Chris Redfield, a Stars commando who uncovers Umbrella’s misdeeds. If I recall correctly, Chris has appeared in all the “Resident Evil” games, including the most recent, “Resident Evil 5″. Boris Kodjoe and Kim Coates will also join the cast,...
