2013 saw the release of Peter Berg’s Lone Survivor, the true story of Seal Team 10 and the failed United States Navy SEALs counter-insurgent mission “Operation Red Wings.” Based on Marcus Luttrell and Patrick Robinson’s book, the film received two Oscar nominations for Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing, received positive reviews and went onto a $149 million box office gross worldwide.
In 2014, Clint Eastwood brought to the screen American Sniper, based on the memoir American Sniper: The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in U.S. Military History (2012) by Chris Kyle, with Scott McEwen and Jim DeFelice. The film became a box office success (worldwide $547 million), was embraced by moviegoers, received great reviews and went onto garner six Academy Awards nominations.

Amanda Knox, who was convicted, acquitted and re-convicted of killing her former roommate Meredith Kercher, has found a job working as a cub reporter for West Seattle Herald according to the paper itself.
In 2007, Knox and her then-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito were both convicted in Italy, where the crime took place. Knox, an American, was imprisoned for four years though much of the prosecution’s narrative was found to be flawed. They were released in 2011 and quickly returned to America. Both were again tried in an Italian court—this time in absentia—and were found guilty. The case is again in appeal.
“We approached her originally to give her the opportunity of a normal life,” Patrick Robinson, editor at the Herald said. “We simply asked her as we would ask anyone of that age and stage, if they would be interested in writing for us as a qualified writer of that...

Lone Survivor

Metropolis Movie Music
One of the more surprising developments this winter has been the financial success of Peter Berg’s Lone Survivor, a half true-to-life action thriller about 2005′s failed Operation Red Wings. Against the Oscar fare that typically hits multiplexes this time of year, it’s grossed an estimated $108 million as of February 7. It’s also fueled debate over the authenticity of the film’s events as adapted from Patrick Robinson’s gussied-up memoir. In addition to multiplying the number of Taliban forces Petty Officer Marcus Luttrell and his team fought, Lone Survivor makes little effort to complicate U.S. involvement in the Middle East beyond black-and-white terms. While some of the blame falls squarely on Berg’s (and Robinson’s) shoulders, Lone Survivor’s score deserves some heat, too.

Film: "Lone Survivor"; Cast: Mark Wahlberg, Ben Foster, Taylor Kitsch, and Emile Hirsch, Ali Suliman, Alexander Ludwik; Director: Peter Berg; Rating: ***1/2
"Lone Survivor" is a well-constructed 'gory war porn' that camouflages an error of judgment on moralistic grounds and glorifies American patriotism.
Based on a true story by Marcus Luttrell and Patrick Robinson, it is an eyewitness account of Operation Red Wings revealing the tale of the Us Navy Seals and Army Special Operations soldiers who lost their lives in the mountainous terrain of Afghanistan in 2005.
The film narration starts off in a non-linear fashion with the medical team attending the rescued lone survivor.

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) handed out their annual awards tonight and it was Spike Jonze winning for his original screenplay, Her, while Billy Ray took the adaptation top prize for Captain Phillips, based on the book "A Captain's Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy Seals, and Dangerous Days at Sea". Both screenplays are nominated for Oscars this year and, in fact, the Original Screenplay nominations match up exactly, but in the Adapted category John Ridley's screenplay for 12 Years a Slave was one of many deemed ineligible due to WGA qualifying rules. So if you think this makes for an "open and shut" case at the Oscars, that's definitely something to consider. That said, the win for Jonze I see as a very big deal in a tough field of competitors. I have Her at the top of my predictions in the Original Screenplay category and this only solidifies my opinion further,...

Disney's Frozen in its 8th successful week, comes in second. Universal's Lone Survivor directed by Peter Berg, with a talent starring cast of Mark Wahlberg, Eric Bana, Taylor Kitsch, Emile Hirsch, Ben Foster and Alexander Ludwig, topped the box office on its first wide weekend after a limited opening last week, with a very solid $38.5 million. Lone Survivor is now the second biggest January opening weekend ever behind Paramount's Cloverfield which earned $40.05 million. The film has a $0 million production budget.

The spoiler is in the title: Navy Seal Marcus Luttrell was the only one to walk away — well, to get medevac’ed away — from a doomed 2005 mission in the mountains of Afghanistan to capture or kill Ahmad Shahd, a Taliban leader who’d targeted U.S. Marines and was an all-around villain. Now, writer-director Peter Berg, in a gripping bounceback from his deeply terrible Battleship, has adapted Luttrell’s story into one of the more realistic military movies ever (at least as far as someone who’s never been in the military can determine), one...

Both the Writers Guild of America, West (Wgaw) and East (Wgae) have announced nominations for the Writers Guild Awards. The biggest omission? Oscar front-runner "12 Years A Slave!" According to IndieWire, "12 Years A Slave, Fruitvale Station, Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom, God Loves Uganda, 20 Feet From Stardom, and The Square are indeed ineligible for a WGA nomination because they were not written under the guild's jurisdiction."
Whatever that means! If you're wondering what happened, read the Writers Guild's rules:
Feature films eligible for a Writers Guild Award were exhibited theatrically for at least one week in Los Angeles during 2013 and were written under the WGA.s Minimum Basic Agreement (Mba) or under a bona fide collective bargaining agreement of the Writers Guild of Canada, Writers Guild of Great Britain, Irish Playwrights & Screenwriters Guild, or the New Zealand Writers Guild. Earlier today saw the announcement of the Writers Guild of America‘s nominations for Best Original, Adapted, and Documentary Screenplay for 2013. Of the major guilds (Producers Guild, Directors Guild, etc.), these are usually the awards taken the least seriously due to their silly rules that exclude several of the top contenders each year. This year, major casualties of their rules included 12 Years a Slave (which is on the fast-track to winning the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar), Philomena, and Fruitvale Station. However, this wouldn’t be the first time a disqualified screenplay has gone on to win an Oscar, as we’ve seen previously with Django Unchained and The King’s Speech.
The exclusion of some of these nominees has led to a bit of randomness in their selections, particularly in the Adapted Screenplay category, where we find surprises like August: Osage County and Lone Survivor, two films that were of pretty poor quality.

The Writers Guild of America award nominations are out, but don’t expect to learn much about the Oscar race from these shortlists.
Too many major screenplays are ineligible for the guild prize, since the organization only honors writers who are union members or films that were made under the auspices of a guild agreement — excluding many foreign and independent movies.
Among those disqualified this year: John Ridley’s script for 12 Years a Slave — considered a frontrunner for the adapted screenplay Oscar — and Steve Coogan and Jeff Pope’s Philomena — another strong contender for that Academy Award. In the original screenplay category,...

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has announced the nominees for the 2014 WGA Awards and, as always, there will be Oscar contending screenplays that weren't eligible due to WGA qualifying rules. This year some of the ineligible scripts include 12 Years a Slave, Rush, Fruitvale Station and Philomena (via HitFix). The absence of such titles make the Oscar race a little more interesting, but if you think Lone Survivor is going to get a nomination (as much as I like seeing it recognized) over 12 Years a Slave guess again. In fact, looking at the nominations compared to my current Oscar predictions for Adapted and Original Screenplay you're going to find few differences. In the Original category the biggest difference is yet another snub for Inside Llewyn Davis, which was looked over yesterday by the Producers Guild and again today by the WGA, and once again, in its place we find Dallas Buyers Club,...

The Oscar race gets more interesting by the day!
The Writers Guild of America unveiled their film nominations today, and among the set are a few surprises - as well as some notable snubs.
In the original screenplay category, mortal lock Woody Allen received his 21st WGA nomination for "Blue Jasmine," while Spike Jonze earned his first for "Her." Rounding out the rest of the field were Eric Warren Singer and David O. Russell for "American Hustle," Craig Borten & Melisa Wallack for "Dallas Buyers Club," and Bob Nelson for "Nebraska."
One high-profile movie left out in the cold is Joel and Ethan Coen's "Inside Llewyn Davis." With a snub from the Producers Guild earlier this week, the critically-acclaimed tale of the '60s folk music scene is losing Oscar momentum.
The adapted screenplay category was more muddled this year, with likely Oscar contenders "12 Years a Slave," "Fruitvale Station," and...

Mark Wahlberg leads an impressive ensemble in Lone Survivor, a brutal war drama of a troubled Seal mission. Filmmaker Peter Berg takes the real-life action of the troubled June 2005 Seal Team 10 mission named “Operation Red Wings” to capture Taliban terrorist Ahmad Shahd and turns it into the brutally real and bone crunching Afghan War drama Lone Survivor. The bloodletting is relentless as Seal Team 10 watches their mission dissolve into disaster but Berg and his handsome cast manage to shine the heroism through the increasing carnage. Berg is a macho filmmaker and Lone Survivor, based on books by Seal Team 10 member Marcus Luttrell and author Patrick Robinson, is easily the most violent of the holiday movies. Still, it’s a tense tale of heroism with rousing themes of courage and patriotism that help take one’s mind off the extreme violence.

One of the revelations from the current New York Times list of non-fiction bestsellers is how many films--many in the late-year awards derby-- have landed there. Solomon Northup's "12 Years a Slave," which was overshadowed upon its 1853 publication by abolitionist Harriet Beecher Stowe's "Uncle Tom's Cabin" (1852) and "A Key to Uncle Tom's Cabin" (1853) and was long known only in historian circles, now sits at number three on the bestseller list. Impressive, and cool. Also on the list are Nelson Mandela's "Long Walk to Freedom," no doubt given a boost by the coincidence of the South African leader's death and the Weinstein film in theaters; Marcus Luttrell and Patrick Robinson's "Lone Survivor" (the Peter Berg-directed title hits theaters on Christmas); and Laura Hillenbrand's "Lone Survivor," currently in production down under with Angelina Jolie at the helm. TV has a strong sway, too. Piper Kerman's "Orange Is the New Black,...

HollywoodNews.com: On May 1st, it was announced that Kristen Stewart would attend the annual Costume Institute Gala Benefit taking place on Monday, May 3 at the Met. The event will be hosted by Oprah Winfrey, Patrick Robinson of the Gap, and Anna Wintour, Editor-in-Chief of Vogue.
We already know that Kristen’s hair will be done by Frederik Fekkai stylist Renato Campora. What we don’t know is whether she’ll wear it up to hide the still-there Joan Jett hair, or if she’ll wear it down and do something funky or sleek with her tresses.
However, the big question on everyone’s minds is what Kristen will wear. This is a high-fashion gala and Kristen can do high fashion as easily as she can do jeans, a tee, and Chucks.
Kristen can take a few routes for the event. She can go for the masculine-glam look,...

Katy Brand and Rufus Hound have been voted into the final of this year’s Let’s Dance For Sports Relief.
The comedy based show returned to our screens tonight and delivered some hilarious performances from stand up comedians, actors and sports personalities.
We have a full run down of tonight’s show here and there is no doubt that Katy Brand’s routine to Beyonce’s ‘Single Ladies’ and Rufus Hound’s ‘Fight For This Love’ stole the show for us.
Rufus looked amazing in his full military regalia and as Jason Manford said:
‘If it wasn’t for the beard….I so would!’
Katy looked amazing in her skintight black leotard and proved that she really should wear a bit more slap in future. She looked smoking hot tonight and she pulled off some fabulous moves and butt slapping action.
Who were you rooting for tonight and do...

So we’re getting ready now for a busy showbiz day! In a few hours we’ll be heading to The Hammersmith Apollo for an exclusive Jls gig, then straight to to BBC Television Centre to watch the live final of So You Think You Can Dance.
This week’s final has been thrown into turmoil after Robbie White pulled out due to a dislocated shoulder, Alastair Postlethwaite stepped in and then pulled out also, after deciding that he couldn’t learn six routines in a few days.
So tonight’s show will be a battle between Tommy Franzén, Lizzie Gough and Charlie Bruce. We think Tommy will take the title, though we wouldn’t mind too much if Charlie won instead. We’ll be liveblogging the final right here, so join us tonight to hear our take on the performances and judges comments. In the meantime feel free to...

Ok, so here’s the thing about Monday night’s Gossip Girl: While being somewhat confusing at some points and annoying at others, it was a slight improvement from what I have been seeing lately, with ‘slight’ being the operative word. Not since the season premiere have I cared about what will happen next on Gossip Girl this year. The childish behaviors of the college level characters (Serena, Dan, Vanessa, and especially Blair) make me wonder if the producers jumped the gun by putting them in college so soon. Just about every teen drama that I know has went three to four years in the high school department, with Veronica Mars being the exception. While the young people of Gossip Girl didn’t act like the average teens in season one and most of season two, it seems as if they have reverted backwards in terms of growing up.

Two scenes are clipped from the October 26 episode of "Gossip Girl". Both show relationship crack in the making, with one of them that of Blair and Chuck's. Chuck wants his girlfriend out of the opening night of his new hotel and enlists Serena's help as a publicist instead.
The other clip is concerning Jenny and her new status of Queen Bee. She orders Eric and his friend to move a few steps down so that she and her followers can have a meeting there.
The episode called "How to Succeed in Bassness" also sees Dan finally watching one of Olivia's infamous sex scenes with co-star and real-life boyfriend at the time, Patrick Robinson and Rufus getting Lily into the Halloween spirit.

One of them has me worried for the state of the Bluck relationship (or is it Chair?). I love when they're fighting, but I love them together even more. We'll have to see what happens.

Gossip Girl apparently doesn't do a traditional Halloween episode. Instead, this year's festivities involve the opening of Chuck's new hotel, with a 1920's flapper-theme party. Blair looks gorgeous, as always, as does Serena. But you know who doesn't? Jenny. She needs a new look immediately. This long white-blonde hair with khol-rimmed eyes is not doing her any favors. Check out the synopsis and promo photos.

Oprah Winfrey is set to host fashion's biggest soiree next year. The media mogul will be co-presenting the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute Gala on May 3 with Gap creative director Patrick Robinson.
The annual New York fashion event will be themed "American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity" for 2010.
According to curator Andrew Bolton explained that the show will look at fashion's role in defining how the nation's fairer sex have been represented historically and how fashion costumes women into standards that still persist in varying degrees of relevance.
The event will also pay particular attention to the way fashion from 1890 to 1940 has morphed into current styles.
