George Pal’s second science fiction classic has conceptual imagination and visual wonder to spare, along with a million awkward and dated details. When rogue planets threaten to obliterate the Earth, a super-Ark spaceship is built to spirit forty ‘chosen ones’ to safety. The Ark passengers have the right stuff, but you may be enraged by the rigged process to select who gets to go. Gee-whiz spectacle is the order of the day — how many End Of The World movies actually show terra firma expunged from the Solar System? Barbara Rush and John Hoyt are the acting standouts, but top honors go to Pal’s visual effect artists and designers.

William Castle is a name synonymous with hucksterism and showmanship, more so than the quality of the films he directed. Which isn’t really fair, it’s just that his gimmicky pieces like The House on Haunted Hill and The Tingler (both 1959), with skeletons flying through the audience and buzzers placed under theatre seats respectively, overshadowed an unsubtle but solid directorial style when unburdened by showbiz trappings. Such is the case with The Night Walker (1964), a Robert Bloch (Psycho) scripted thriller that delves into the dream world in effective ways.
Released in late December by Universal, The Night Walker received some good notices but left audiences sleepy. Perhaps the perceived combination of shock master Bloch and schlock meister Castle didn’t match what made it to the screen; indeed it’s a different tale told in a different manner than either was used to telling, yet has a sometimes eerie...

It’s a quiet week of horror and sci-fi home entertainment titles, as there are only a handful coming our way this Tuesday. There’s a limited edition release for Umberto Lenzi’s Eaten Alive! that Severin Films has put together, and Scream Factory is giving William Castle’s The Night Walker the HD treatment as well.
Other releases arriving on February 20th include Mom and Dad, Headgame, Downhill, Cannibal Hookers, and season one of Midnight, Texas.
Eaten Alive!: Limited Edition (Severin Films, Blu-ray)
Eight years after he first unleashed the Italian cannibal craze, spaghetti splatter master Umberto Lenzi (Nightmare City, Cannibal Ferox) returned to the jungle for this "graphic" (Monster Hunter), "sordid" (Geek Legacy) and "extreme" (Horror News) gut-muncher that still packs the power to knock you over. EuroSleaze hall-of- famers Robert Kerman (Cannibal Holocaust), Janet Agren (City Of The Living Dead), Ivan Rassimov (The Man From Deep...

Cinelinx rides high with the Wild Stallion DVD from Warner Archive!
The Set-up
A horse tracker (Ben Johnson) searches for a white stallion that he once owned as a child and now roams the hills on the western frontier. Also stars Edgar Buchanan, Martha Hyer, Hayden Rorke, and Hugh Beaumont.
Directed by Lewis D. Collins
A manufacture-on-demand DVD.
The Delivery
Modern film fans often downplay the value of most pre-1960 westerns, dismissing them as all the same. Of course, this is not the case; westerns were usually built around a charismatic actor or scenic locale, and their penchant for strong moral lessons gives each a distinctive personality.
Wild Stallion, a 1952 Monogram western, plays more like one of the live-action Disney dramas of the era than a standard western, which is actually part of the charm. There's a strong story here, even if there's a bit of wooden acting from some involved.

Drum Beat from 1953 starred Alan Ladd and Charles Bronson and was based on a true story about a violent Indian uprising in the 187os. It’s an impressive and exciting outdoor adventure but Hollywood studios were churning out hundreds of westerns in the early 50′s so it’s not too surprising that Drum Beat, though so superior to many, hasn’t received its due. The most notable thing about Drum Beat is that it provided Charles Bronson with his real break-through role as an actor. Bronson’s scene-stealing performance as an Indian chief received a lot of attention and paved the way for his long and successful career, but Drum Beat is Not available on DVD.

In Charles Bronson news, two of his westerns, Once Upon A Time In The West and The Magnificent Seven, made this weeks list of Top Ten Westerns here at Wamg, but there’s an outstanding western that Bronson costarred in very early in his career worthy of discussion that most readers are probably unfamiliar with. After a number of false starts, the Los Angeles Times says that Columbia Pictures has hired "United States of Tara" writer Sheila Callaghan to pen a new draft of the screenplay for the feature I Dream of Jeannie , based on the 1960s series. The newspaper says Callaghan is "best known as a downtown New York playwright, writing an acclaimed retelling of James Joyce's 'Ulysses' and a Reagan-era romantic drama set in Greece titled 'Lascivious Something,' among some other well-regarded work." They add that one of the hard things for the producers to do is to figure out how to update the series, which starred Barbara Eden, Larry Hagman, Bill Daily and Hayden Rorke.
