Howard Rosenman made his way to a screening of Bradley Cooper’s Maestro at the Academy a few weeks back, and admits that before he took a seat, he really wanted to not like it.
The veteran producer (Father of the Bride, Call Me by Your Name) tried to sell a project based on the life and career of Leonard Bernstein years ago but says he “didn’t have the juice” to get it off the ground. But what Rosenman does have is close personal ties to the iconic composer, a man he says dramatically changed the course of his life — and then some. Instead of hating it, Rosenman, 78, tells The Hollywood Reporter that he was so floored by Cooper’s film that he couldn’t stop crying. “It’s a masterpiece,” he says.
The quick backstory. In 1967, Rosenman, who is Jewish, was in medical school in Philadelphia. Amid a rising conflict in Israel,...

“Inappropriate Behavior” is a comic drama about the relationship between Max Brandel (Cannavale), a formerly successful late-night comedy writer turned not-so-successful stand-up comic, and his brilliant but complicated 9-year-old son Ezra, who struggles with Asperger’s.
Having recently blown up both his career and his marriage, Max now lives with his father Stan (De Niro), a gifted chef whose eccentricities caused him to lose his restaurant and become a doorman. Max, profoundly at odds with his ex-wife and her new boyfriend about how to address their son’s needs, decides to kidnap Ezra and take him on a cross-country odyssey, with hilariously disastrous results.

Renée Zellweger continues to follow the yellow brick road to the Oscars.
The Los Angeles premiere of Judy on Thursday night in Beverly Hills kept the Academy Award winner on track for a possible second win come February.
“We’re just so happy we’re able to share it with you tonight,” Zellweger said to the crowd before the screening began at the Academy on Wilshire Boulevard. “And I hope that you guys love it and feel as much for [Garland] in watching it as we did in making it.”
About two hours later, as the credits rolled on the Rupert Goold-directed drama about the last months of Garland’s life, sniffles could be heard throughout the auditorium. Zellweger received thunderous applause when her name appeared on screen.
Downstairs, during the post-screening buffet dinner and reception, Zellweger was mobbed by well-wishers.

Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman Revisit the Making of Their 1989 Landmark AIDS Doc “Common Threads”
It’s been 30 years since the release of the Oscar-winning documentary “Common Threads: Stories From the Quilt,” but directors Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman remember when they decided to make the film like it was yesterday.
The two were at the 1987 March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights when they saw the massive quilt displayed on the National Mall.
“We were just stunned and awed by the scale of the quilt and the intimacy of it,” Epstein tells Variety. “I’d never seen anything like that. We were with our friend [fellow filmmaker] Peter Adair and he said, ‘Somebody has to make a film about this. Jeffrey and I ran with that and ran back to San Francisco and met with the Names Project folks and started delving into all the material.”

Actors Ashley Judd and Neil Patrick Harris have been roped in for a biopic on anti-gay activist Anita Bryant.
Titled Anita, the film will be on the life of Bryant, the and singer who campaigned against local anti-discrimination ordinances in Florida, inadvertently igniting the gay rights movement.
Chad Hodge will write and direct, while Howard Rosenman and Darren Star will produce the project, reports variety.com.
Bryant was a singer and spokesperson for orange juice and the Florida Citrus Commission. She fronted a campaign in the late 1970s called 'Save Our Children' that advocated against rules prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, tanking her career in the process.
While researching the history, Hodge spent significant time with Bryant in her Oklahoma home, and that element is recounted in the movie. Harris plays Hodge as he meets Bryant, who is played by Judd.

Anonymous Content founder and producer Steve Golin, who succumbed to cancer on April 21 at age 64, had something in short supply in Hollywood: good taste. There aren’t many Hollywood producers who can lay claim to producing two Oscar contenders in one year, as he did with “Spotlight” and “The Revenant” in 2016.
While Golin was a hard-driving entrepreneur who also founded Propaganda Films — the pioneering production/management company/pirate crew that represented more than 50 top movie directors from Michael Bay, Zack Snyder, and Antoine Fuqua to Michel Gondry, David Lynch, Spike Jonze, and David Fincher for commercials and music videos as well as filmed features — he always put in the increasing time and energy it required to support excellent dramas. A column chronicling conversations and events on the awards circuit.
Julia Roberts is back in the awards conversation this season, not only with her latest film, Ben Is Back, which has been winning her some of the best reviews of her career, but also her Amazon series Homecoming, which got a two-season initial order and has racked up Lead Actress nominations right out of the gate for her at the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice Awards after just a 10-episode first season.
I caught up with her Thursday night at CAA for an interview set to run on Deadline next week. We talked as a full house, largely Academy members, watched Ben Is Back. She’s justifiably proud of the movie, which just began its limited runs last week and will expand through Roadside Attractions to the top 25 markets next week as it continues to widen during the season. “Call Me by Your Name” opened Thanksgiving weekend with stellar reviews and the best limited release numbers of 2017. Sony Pictures Classics acquired the elegiac romantic drama in 2016, and with a finished movie by summer’s end, screened it for Sundance programmers who immediately wanted the film in its lineup.
Now, “Call Me by Your Name” has become a consensus favorite among critics and audiences. It’s simple yet sophisticated, an escapist summer fantasy that feels authentic, and a lovely romance between 17-year-old Elio (Timothée Chalamet) and his professor father’s 24-year-old grad student Oliver (Armie Hammer). And it’s that rare four-quadrant specialty hit: embraced by straights and gays, women and men, young and old.
As classics scholars, Professor Perlman (Michael Stuhlbarg) and Oliver explore the eroticism of Greek statues and fine art; Perlman admires the Grecian ideal of love between two men; he wishes he had experienced what Elio and Oliver share that summer.

Veteran filmmaker James Ivory is happy to let “Call Me by Your Name” rest now. Nearly a decade in the making – much of that time spent with Ivory attached to the film in various positions, from producer to co-director to screenwriter – director Luca Guadagnino’s lush big screen take on André Aciman’s novel of the same name is hitting theaters on the wave of accolades first ignited during its Sundance premiere, admiration that has not abated in the months since the film first debuted.
And while Guadagnino has been actively chatting up the possibility of sequels for the film – or, at the very least, a film that picks up with the film’s main characters after many years have passed, as Aciman’s novel does – Ivory has no interest in returning to the material. For him, this chapter of his creative life is closed.

Just a few moments ago, the 2017 Film Independent Spirit Award nominations were revealed to the public, continuing on with Phase One of the awards season. This precursor marks another new point in the race, as many of these movies nominated today will be contending for Oscar attention as well. Removed from the Academy Award race though, this is just a great precursor because of what it nominates. The films are small in budget and often need a leg up, so this is a spotlight on what the viewing public should be searching out in theaters and at home on Blu-Ray or VOD. Congrats to the nominees and read on to see who and what they were… You’ll see all of the nominees below, but as you’ll be able to tell, it appears to be a race between Call Me By Your Name, The Florida Project, Get Out, and Lady Bird,...

At the New York Film Festival press conference last month Luca Guadagnino gave some background on how he took over to become director from James Ivory.
He had been approached by Peter Spears, who, together with Howard Rosenman was one of the original producers. They kept "nurturing this movie until now," he said and were developing the script from the book by Aciman with Ivory. "Because the...

Just a few short hours ago, the precursor season kicked off this morning for 2017 with the nominations for the 27th annual Ifp Gotham Independent Film Awards. Yes, we’ve reached that point in the year. Precursors will begin trickling in, starting to establish early frontrunners. Leading off is the Ifp Gotham Independent Film Awards, which will give us an idea of which indies are contenders, as opposed to just pretenders. This won’t be the last word on them, by any stretch, but it is the first word, and that’s something to take note of. Gotham is beginning a run that will ultimately end up at the Academy Awards in March. As you’ll see below, Get Out led the field with four nominations, followed by Call Me By Your Name, Columbus, The Florida Project, and Lady Bird with three apiece. There was also Good Time, I, Tonya, and Mudbound among multiple nominees,...

Three great movies, all about love — and not only about love — will be entering the theatrical arena soon and if you are craving some love, you want to see these.credit: The Odyssey Online
“Frantz” directed by Francois Ozon. U.S. Release March 24 by Music Box. International sales by Films Distribution.
About to be released March 24 by Music Box, “Frantz” premiered in Venice and Toronto Film Festivals this last fall. Boyd van Hoeij’s review in The Hollywood Reporter is the recommended review for those who like to read reviews in advance. He describes “Frantz” as “a richly imagined and superbly assembled period piece”. The L.A. Goethe Institute had a sneak preview and I was among the lucky who got to see it there.

Sundance is over and the prizes are won. People have dispersed to their homes and the realities that await them there.
This was a Sundance like no other I can remember, and I have attended every single one since 1986! The cold was extreme; and the political engagement and disgust was extreme. Not only did we have the Inauguration the first day, but the Women’s March the second day had probably 6,000 people marching and on that day the first of many deplorable executive orders (this one against women of the world and their control over their own bodies) began flying off the desk of our current president, who has continued to issue at least one every day, each one more despicable than the previous. Politics and women took center stage.

No, your proverbial chain ain’t being yanked. You indeed heard correctly. Flying straight out of Cannes comes this latest spot of casting news. From the man behind the gushy flimflam that is Sex And The City, comes a film…of an entirely different ouvre. Based on a true story, Anita tells the tale of real life anti-gay activist Anita Bryant, and now has hot tamale Uma Thurman confirmed to star.
The devout Christian singer spent most of her life peddling anti-gay bigotry to all and sundry. Quite the driven and determined woman, Bryant successfully campaigned to repeal a gay rights bill in Florida. She had a ton of Top 40 hits, no doubt crammed full of backwards rhetoric whittling on about the demonic proclivities of gays. Needless to say, her staunch homophobia cost her the career she worked her whole life to attain. Aw…boo hoo. This also caused her...

Sparkle

USA, 2012
Some films can’t help but be defined by elements outside their control. Every so often, those elements help the film or don’t re-form whatever legacy it may inspire. (See, for example, The Dark Knight, which was initially colored by the tragic and untimely death of Heath Ledger, who played the Joker.) Sometimes, though, those elements stick out like a sore thumb, as is the case with Sparkle. This remake of the 1976 film starring Irene Cara may always be remembered as Whitney Houston’s last film before her death earlier this year. Though fond memories of the singer’s history may soothe some, Sparkle is a strangely schizophrenic and familiar movie that never comes together.
American Idol winner Jordin Sparks plays the title character, the youngest daughter of three living in Detroit, circa 1968. She and her sisters, Delores...

If, for whatever reason, Bill Condon’s Dreamgirls didn’t strike you as a shiny enough spectacle, here comes Salim Akil‘s remake of Sparkle, which tells essentially the same story as Dreamgirls, though the film’s first trailer resembles a glossy music video devoid of any of the top-notch performance or actual drama that made Dreamgirls even remotely watchable. Alas, the film does feature a number of interesting actors (including Jordin Sparks in her first feature, Mike Epps, and Derek Luke), and what will likely end up the film’s big selling point – the final performance of Whitney Houston. The original Sparkle hit screens in 1976, thanks to director Sam O’Steen and writers Joel Schumacher (really) and Howard Rosenman, with music composed by Curtis Mayfield and no less than Aretha Franklin singing the songs for the film’s soundtrack. The film was loosely based on the story of The Supremes, featuring...

With her untimely death earlier this year, the focus of the musical drama Sparkle has now shifted to highlight Whitney Houston‘s last acting performance. We’ve got the first trailer today and I have to give kudos to the marketing team to not solely play up this aspect. I’m curious to see how much she factors into the film, as she plays supporting to American Idol star Jordin Sparks. From Salim Akil, director of last year’s Jumping the Broom, this remake of the 1976 film is inspired by The Supremes and you can see the first official trailer below. I’m at least down for seeing Cee-Lo Green in another film again after his all-to-brief apperance in Mystery Men.
