Oscar-winning actor Troy Kotsur has joined the cast of Foundation season three.
The Coda star will play Preem Palver, the leader of a planet of psychics in the sci-fi epic. Based on Issac Asimov’s novels, Foundation is from showrunner David S. Goyer and stars Lee Pace and Jared Harris.
Here’s the official description of the most recent season of the centuries-spanning story: “Tension mounts throughout the galaxy. As the Cleons unravel, a vengeful queen plots to destroy Empire from within. Hari, Gaal, and Salvor discover a colony of Mentalics with psionic abilities that threaten to alter psychohistory itself. The Foundation has entered its religious phase, promulgating the Church of Seldon throughout the Outer Reach and inciting the Second Crisis: war with Empire. The monumental adaptation of Foundation chronicles the stories of four crucial individuals transcending space and time as they overcome deadly crises, shifting loyalties and complicated relationships...

Just five months after nabbing a best supporting actor Oscar for his turn as deaf fisherman Frank Rossi in best picture “Coda,” Troy Kotsur nearly lost the little gold man. On Saturday, the “Coda” star’s Oscar statuette was stolen in a car robbery, according to NBC News.
The robbery occurred on Saturday, while Kotsur was visiting his hometown of Mesa, Ariz. to be honored for his Oscar win. During his stay, two teenagers stole the actor’s jeep with his Oscar inside. After Kotsur notified the Mesa Police Department, the jeep was located later that evening. According to the police department, the two teens were charged with theft of means of transportation, and the vehicle was returned to Kotsur with all of his possessions inside.

Troy Kotsur says that after his vehicle was stolen, his Oscar statue went along with it.
The Coda star posted about the incident Saturday in a now-deleted tweet, writing that while in Mesa, Arizona, his vehicle — which had his Oscar inside — was stolen. Both the vehicle and award statue were recovered by local authorities, after which Kotsur shared a photo of himself posing with several police officers while thanking them for their efforts.
The vehicle was located with two juvenile male suspects inside, the Mesa Police Department told The Hollywood Reporter.
“The two juveniles admitted to the theft and were charged with Theft of Means of Transportation. They were remanded to the custody of the Maricopa County Juvenile Court System,” a representative for the Mesa Pd said. “Mr. Kotsur had his vehicle returned to him to include all the property that was inside.

"You want peace, but you won't go get it." Buffalo 8 has revealed an official trailer for an indie sci-fi thriller titled Givers of Death, also known as G.O.D., from filmmaker Addison Henderson - his first narrative feature. Perhaps another pandemic-inspired pessimistic thriller? An incurable virus has wiped out one third of the world’s population (too close to home?). Many infected commit suicide to end their agony. Those who cannot bring themselves to end their own lives hire professionals (called G.O.D. of course). It is the journey of a man, a detective, and an entire city's quest for peace. The man seeks peace through atonement, the detective through revenge and the city through resolution. The film explores whether peace can be attained when one exists in constant chaos - in reality, or in the mind. "An apocalyptic tale of redemption." Starring Henderon with Louis Lombardi, JJ Alfieri,...

With ‘Coda’s’ Oscars, Authentic Representation in Hollywood Takes a Huge Step Forward (Guest Column)
There were several beautiful, gratifying moments at the 94th Academy Awards. But you would not necessarily know that by watching the viral videos circulating social media that emerged in the immediate aftermath of the ceremony, which focus on one particular distasteful incident.
Today, it is time to let the dust settle on the so-called “slap heard around the world” and shift the conversation to “Coda,” enabling this year’s Best Picture winner to receive the attention and accolades it deserves.
The narrative surrounding the success of “Coda” — which also took home Oscars for Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Troy Kotsur) and Best Adapted Screenplay — encompasses much more than initially meets the eye. It is a story of advocacy, not just filmmaking. And it is a story of years of behind-the-scenes efforts by individuals who were not directly involved with the production.

As Frank Rossi in the Best Picture winner Coda, Troy Kotsur plays a Deaf father maintaining his connection to his hearing daughter (Emelia Jones). The role earned Kotsur not only praise but also a Best Picture Academy Award, becoming the first Deaf actor to earn the accolade. But before that, Kotsur made a different type of history, long, long, ago in a galaxy far, far away. In an interview from January 2020 with The Daily Moth, Kotsur shares his experience working on the Disney+ series The Mandalorian and helping to develop the sign language used by the Tuskens.
Kotsur’s work appears in “The Gunslinger,” chapter five of The Mandalorian. The episode finds the titular character (Pedro Pascal) reluctantly agreeing to help young bounty hunter Toro Calican (Jake Cannavale) capture Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen). While tracking Shand across the deserts of Tatooine, the pair arrives in Tusken-controlled territory. Where Calican suggests...

Troy Kotsur is operating on one hour of sleep, but he’s still smiling ear to ear. It’s Monday, the morning after he became the second deaf performer in Academy history to win an acting award at the Oscars. His turn as the lusty fisherman Frank Rossi in “Coda” became a favorite of this awards season, and so did appearances from the affable 53-year-old performer, a working Los Angeles stage actor who until recently was not a known entity in Hollywood.
As Kotsur thinks about what his Oscar win will mean to him, he starts to cry. “I was so tired of financially struggling for so many years,” he says through interpreter Justin Maurer. “Now, receiving these awards — it’s saved my life, my career, my family. I’ve taken so many risks, and without these nominations and awards, I don’t know what would have happened.” He ponders a different life,...

Sometimes, it comes down to one very simple thing — and by it, I don’t just mean the best picture race. I mean that thing we call movies.
At the movies, people want to be moved. They also want to be thrilled, staggered, transfixed, seduced, immersed, mystified, mesmerized, drawn outside of themselves. There are movies that can rewire your way of seeing. And the cinema is an endlessly evolving form that has given us some of the greatest works of art of the last century. There are years when the movies that win the Academy Award for best picture are timeless hallmarks of cinema. “The Godfather.” “All About Eve.” “Lawrence of Arabia.” “Midnight Cowboy.” “The Silence of the Lambs.” “On the Waterfront.” “Schindler’s List.” “Gone With the Wind.” “Titanic.”
But not always. Sometimes, the film that wins the Academy Award for best picture is not an indelible piece of cinema,...

“Coda” star Troy Kotsur made history at the Oscars as the first deaf man to win an Academy Award for acting.
His victory comes 35 years after his “Coda” co-star Marlee Matlin became the first deaf actor ever to win an Oscar, for her leading role in “Children of a Lesser God.”
Kotsur dedicated the win to his father in an emotional speech that made his interpreter choke up. Audience members at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood gave Kotsur a standing ovation and signed applause in American Sign Language by waving their hands.
“My dad, he was the best signer in our family, but he was in a car accident and he became paralyzed from the neck down and he no longer was able to sign. Dad, I learned so much from you. I’ll always love you. You are my hero,” Kotsur said.

Deaf representation has taken a major step forward with two Oscar-nominated films this year — one a fictional story, the other entirely real.
Best Picture contender Coda stars Oscar-nominated deaf actor Troy Kotsur as a father who is deaf, and whose daughter is hearing and known as a Coda, or ‘child of deaf adults’. Meanwhile, in the short documentary category, Oscar nominee Audible tells the story of three high school seniors at the Maryland School for the Deaf. They, like Kotsur, grew up deaf in a society that often shunts to the side those without hearing.
Deadline got Kotsur and Audible stars Amaree McKenstry-Hall, Lera Walkup, and Jazie Perry together recently for a video conference call where they shared how moved they were by each other’s films. During the call Kotsur placed his hand on his chest, telling the young people, “When I saw Audible, it hit me hard. It...

Winning the Academy Award for Best Picture often demands so much more than simply making a great film. Sometimes, it comes down to peaking in the minds of awards voters in the final weeks of the season, capturing late awards and having the cast and story to charm the voters.
The film that finds itself in that enviable position of having the last-minute momentum this year is surely Coda.
In addition to its Best Picture nomination, the film’s director Siân Heder is nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay, and the deaf fishing family patriarch played by Troy Kotsur is a favorite for Best Supporting Actor after several wins including a SAG Award. Fellow cast members Emilia Jones, Marlee Matlin and Daniel Durant haven’t made the nominations list, but they have been as united in awards promotion as they were when they shot the film in Gloucester, Massachusetts, reassembling in...

The delicate facets of parenthood are on full display in this season’s awards contenders. The power of the SAG. Days after winning not one but two Screen Actors Guild Awards for “Coda,” Troy Kotsur rocketed up the Best Supporting Actor Oscar odds into first place. He’s displaced season-long frontrunner Kodi Smit-McPhee (“The Power of the Dog”), who’s been in the top spot this entire time. Can Kotsur really go all the way at the Oscars? Yes.
In some ways, Kotsur — the first deaf actor to be nominated for an Oscar and just the second overall after his “Coda” wife Marlee Matlin — feels like he should’ve been the favorite all along, though this is easier to say with two SAG Awards on his mantle now. Like “Coda” itself, Kotsur has a rooting and likability factor that has widespread appeal. His turn as Frank Rossi is one of the highlights of “Coda” — an emotional, funny, crude yet warm performance that you immediately respond...

History was made at the 28th Annual SAG Awards in both the film and television categories as both “Squid Game” and “Coda” took home two major prizes. Though Netflix went into the evening with 10 nominations it failed to take home any prizes on the film side, but swept the male and female lead actor in a television drama thanks to “Squid Game.”
For TV, HBO Max and Netflix tied with three wins each: “Succession,” “Hacks” and “Mare of Easttown” were all honored, as were “Squid Game” and “Ted Lasso.”
As with every show, a few frontrunners triumphed and a few shockers.
Here, Variety breaks down the biggest snubs and surprises of the 28th Annual SAG Awards.
Surprise: Jessica Chastain, “The Eyes of Tammy Faye”
All season long, it’s been hard to predict who would ultimately triumph in the lead female category, so any winner would likely register as a surprise here.

The 28th annual SAG Awards wrapped Sunday with Apple’s Coda winning the marquee Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture prize, the latest step for the indie drama centered on the deaf community, which has been on the rise since premiering at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival.
The Eyes of Tammy Faye‘s Jessica Chastain won the Female Actor in a Leading Role prize, topping a loaded category that included Olivia Colman, Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Hudson and Lady Gaga. Will Smith topped Denzel Washington, Andrew Garfield, Javier Bardem and Benedict Cumberbatch to take the Male Actor prize. Troy Kotsur is already a trailblazer as the first deaf actor to score an individual nomination at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, but he could make even more history. For his acclaimed work in the Apple TV+ film “Coda,” the 53-year-old actor earned two SAG nominations, one in supporting actor and the other in ensemble. This puts Kotsur in a unique position that no deaf actor has experienced before, with possible wins in both categories.
Kotsur faces some tough competition in his individual contest, including some A-list names. The only other first-time nominee of the group is Kodi Smit-McPhee (“The Power of the Dog”), who has largely swept the critic awards for his performance. The two rookies will face three previous SAG Award winners, including Ben Affleck (“The Tender Bar”), who scored his first individual bid after winning the top ensemble award twice for 1998’s “Shakespeare in Love” and 2012’s “Argo,...

According to Gold Derby predictions, “Coda” will receive three Oscar nominations on the morning of February 8, 2022 (see below). The Apple TV Plus family drama stars Emilia Jones as the only hearing person in her deaf family. The girl’s desire to be a singer and go to college causes a rift with her parents (played by Marlee Matlin and Troy Kotsur), who want her to stay home and help out with their fishing business. “Coda,” which stands for “child of deaf adult,” was recently recognized at the SAG Awards in the film ensemble category and for Kotsur in the supporting actor race.

Currently at Gold Derby, our 12 Experts from major media outlets are evenly split in their SAG Awards predictions for the supporting actor category. Six are going with Kodi Smit-McPhee (“The Power of the Dog”) and six are picking Troy Kotsur (“Coda”). Hmm, can we just declare a tie and call it a day?
Smit-McPhee has the support of Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby), Brian Truitt (USA Today), Peter Travers (ABC), Wilson Morales (BlackFilmandTV), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby) and Matthew Jacobs (unaffiliated). On the Netflix drama, Smit-McPhee plays Peter Gordon, a troubled teen in 1925 Montana who gets made fun of for his lisp and effeminate manner.
And Kotsur is forecasted to win by Jazz Tangcay (Variety), Nikki Novak (Fandango), Clayton Davis (Variety), Tariq Khan (Fox TV), Susan King (Gold Derby) and Tim Gray (Variety). As blue collar fisherman Frank Rossi, a deaf father of two, Kotsur has trouble bonding with his hearing daughter,...

“Coda’s” breakout star Troy Kotsur has already been nominated at the SAG Awards, Critics Choice and Golden Globes for his supporting role as fisherman father Frank Rossi. He’s now a shoo-in for his first career Oscar nomination, according to Gold Derby predictions. But Kotsur’s on-screen wife, Marlee Matlin, has so far been overlooked by major awards groups for playing free-spirited mother Jackie Rossi on the Apple TV Plus coming-of-age film. So what gives?
Matlin is a previous Best Actress Oscar winner for “Children of a Lesser God” (1986). She made history that year by being the first deaf performer to be nominated for an Academy Award, let alone win one. At the age of 21, Matlin was also the youngest person to prevail in that specific category, a record that’s held for 35 years (and counting). While the actress has never returned to the Oscars as a nominee, she...

Nominations were revealed Wednesday morning for the 28th annual SAG Awards, one of the bellwether guild events in the awards-season calendar.
Rosario Dawson and Vanessa Hudgens are being joined by new SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher to announce nominees in 15 film and television categories in a ceremony starting at 7 a.m. Pt on SAG-AFTRA’s Instagram Live page.
The guild also this morning announced its annual stunt ensemble nominees (see the full list of noms below).
After this morning’s nominations, guild members will vote from January 19-25 ahead of the awards ceremony now set to air on TNT and TBS on February 27 at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, a departure from the guild’s usual Shrine Auditorium locale.
In 2021, the SAG Awards were held as a one-hour virtual ceremony delayed to April because of the constraints of the pandemic; for now, an in-person event is planned, complete with a red carpet.

Since the SAG Awards began handing out trophies for Best Film Supporting Actor in 1994, every single winner has gone on to receive an Oscar nomination except for one — Idris Elba was snubbed by the Academy Awards for his role in “Beasts of No Nation” (2015). According to Gold Derby’s SAG Awards predictions for Film Supporting Actor, this year’s five nominees will be Kodi Smit-McPhee (“The Power of the Dog”), Ciaran Hinds (“Belfast”), Jamie Dornan (“Belfast”), Jared Leto (“House of Gucci”) and Troy Kotsur (“Coda”).
Smit-McPhee’s performance as Peter Gordon in “The Power of the Dog” comes in first place with 19/5 odds. This would be the first SAG Awards nomination for the 25-year-old Australian actor. In “The Power of the Dog,” Smit-McPhee plays Peter, the shy, artistic son of Rose (Kirsten Dunst) whose life is uprooted when Rose marries a rancher named George (Jesse Plemons). Once Peter moves to the ranch,...

Whippersnapper Kodi Smit-McPhee (“The Power of the Dog”) has built a significant lead in our Oscar odds for Best Supporting Actor, but the actors ranked second and third pose a major threat. Ciaran Hinds (“Belfast”) and Troy Kotsur (“Coda”) are the kinds of veteran character actors who often get their due in the category, and they also play the kind of role that has been celebrated on multiple occasions: dear old dad.

“Coda” is one of the most acclaimed films of the year thanks, in part, to the breakout performance by Emilia Jones. She and five of her cast members will be eligible for the 2022 SAG Award for best ensemble, as revealed to Gold Derby by Apple TV+. The list also includes Academy Award winner Marlee Matlin and critics favorite Troy Kotsur. See the alphabetical list below.
The film tells the story of Ruby (Jones), a child of deaf adults who is the only hearing member of her family. Matlin and Kotsur play her parents, who are both deaf, as is her brother, Leo (Daniel Durant). Ruby helps out her family with their fishing business while also wanting to pursue her dreams of becoming a singer, and she must decide which path she wants to take. Siân Heder’s coming-of-age drama Coda, which was the first feature in Sundance history to win all the top prizes, has made audiences cry, but it’s also made them laugh.
