Exclusive: Paula Abdul is among an ensemble cast for a feature-length podcast from Steven Jay Rubin (Bleacher Bums), Billy Riback (Home Improvement) and stand-up comic Bruce Smirnoff.
The American Idol star is starring in Spacemen From Planet Judy alongside Phil Hendrie (Rick and Morty), Hal Rudnick (Reno 911), John Mariano (The Offer) and Eric Waddell (Funny You Should Ask).
It begins when all of Earth’s gay males, and two straight men dressed in drag because there was a mix-up in their Halloween costumes, are abducted to the distant planet Judy (named after Judy Garland), the gay haven world of the universe, where they will live in freedom without oppression.
Inadvertently kidnapped, bumbling information technology specialists Mitch (Hendrie) and Lenny (Rudnick) find themselves on an exotic world of constant partying, mingling and cuddling, all run by the Golden Ram Man (Mariano), a mad tyrant who abhors insubordination and seeded grapes.

Virgil Films has released the remarkable documentary "The Coolest Guy Movie Ever", a unique look at the 1963 WWII classic "The Great Escape". The film cemented Steve McQueen as a newly-minted superstar of the big screen and featured one of the all-time great casts: James Garner, Richard Attenborough, Charles Bronson, James Coburn, David McCallum, Donald Pleasence, James Donald among them. United Artists originally intended the movie to be shot in Hollywood but director John Sturges argued that it would only be convincing if shot on location in Germany. "The Coolest Guy Movie Ever" visits those locations and presents how they look today. In some cases, the iconic locations have changed considerably while others remain instantly recognizable. The documentary was conceived, directed, photographed and edited by Christophe Espenan, a devoted fan of the film. Espenan and a team of dedicated assistants and enthusiasts of the movie painstakingly tracked down even the most minor locations.

The thought of massive crowds of excited movie fans is perhaps more attached to Star Wars than any other current film franchise. There are certainly franchises that have a more storied history, but you don't exactly see James Bond fans dressing up and waiting for days in line for each new film. The concept of Star Wars fans waiting in line has even gotten the late night treatment in an iconic late night sketch from Triumph the Insult Comic Dog. (The "which of these buttons calls your parents to pick you up?" zinger is still hilarious.)
Now Variety reports that there's going to be a movie that's explicitly about waiting in line to see a Star Wars movie. It's called The Line Kings and is written by Billy Riback and Steve Rubin and directed by Tony Dow (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Babylon 5).

The Line Kings will tell the story of a bunch of Star Wars fans in a queue...
With a new Star Wars film, inevitably, comes a new queue. In the days of the prequel trilogy, there were stories of people camping out for days, even weeks, to be first in line for the new film. And now a new comedy is coming that’s set to salute the commitment of Star Wars fandom.
The movie is called The Line Kings, and it’s set to follow a group of Star Wars fans who duly camp out for four days in Los Angeles, outside of the Chinese Theatre. The reason for the queue? A Disney announcement that those first in line get a walk-on role in the new Star Wars film. The resultant battle between two fan groups is set to be the focus of the movie.

The past year has been an especially harsh one for the entertainment industry in terms of well-known personalities who have passed away. Today's news that actor Robert Vaughn has died hits Cinema Retro especially hard and this writer in particular. He died from a battle with leukemia and was surrounded by his family in his final moments. I first met Robert in 1983 at a press conference in New York in which he and David McCallum promoted their forthcoming TV movie "Return of The Man From U.N.C.L.E." I've remained friends with them ever since and shared many an enjoyable conversation. Robert was an early supporter of Cinema Retro and contributed to numerous issues, most recently issues #33 and #34 in which he was interviewed by writer Steve Rubin about the dramatic occurrences in making the 1969 WWII film "The Bridge at Remagen...

Aton Soumache, producer of Mark Osborne’s global hit The Little Prince, talks about bringing the French classic to the big screen and his ambitions for Paris-based mini-major On Entertainment.
Producers Aton Soumache and Dimitri Rassam of On Entertainment received Unifrance’s French Cinema Award at its annual Rendez-vous in Paris over the weekend in recognition of the global success of their recent production, Mark Osborne’s The Little Prince.
The $57m production has drawn more than 15 million spectators worldwide since its release last July, making it the most successful French-produced feature-length animation of all time, and has still to hit screens in the Us, where Paramount Pictures has set a March 18 launch. UK and Canada releases are due around the same time.
When Soumache and Rassam first approached Osborne about directing an animation adaptation of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s classic novella, the Kung Fu Panda director turned them down. The pair had...

I’m not sure we’ll get every story of heroism, bravery, and ingenuity that made World War II so endlessly fascinating, but by now we seem to have gotten the best of them. The war had a scope involving millions of people on a global scale never seen before so the stories of the atrocities and acts of mercy continue to be uncovered and justly celebrated. And yet, one of the most enduring tales was not about a battle. Instead, the true story of the massive escape from Germany’s Stalag Luft III demonstrates a never-say-die attitude that demoralized the enemy. Thinking themselves clever, the Nazis collected their most troublesome prisoners and placed them in one facility, thinking they would be able to keep a better eye on them. They were all officers and treated a such, with the expectation that they would not cause trouble.

Strangely, it took the recent death of filmmaker John (Weird Science) Hughes—as we like to call him—to remind me that I briefly met his muse. It was Spring 1983 and she was in NYC to celebrate the premiere of her second motion picture, Spacehunter: Adventures In The Forbidden Zone.
Stare blankly at a computer screen if you don’t recall it. I barely do. It was an Sf flick starring Peter Strauss, a pre-Sixteen Candles Molly Ringwald, Ernie Hudson and Michael Ironside, directed by Twilight Zone classic veteran Lamont Johnson. Ring any bells? Well, it was in 3-D but it wasn’t very good. Ahhhhh, Now you remember!
Nonetheless, magazine editors don’t know That for certain months before release when a picture’s in production. So, we sent James Van Hise on location (to wherever they filmed, Utah? Nevada?), and he filed a Set Visit story and a Strauss profile.

Finally I am getting around to typing this up as the Blu-rays covered in this second report on Fox's James Bond titles on Blu-ray were released in stores two weeks ago. Unfortunately a variety of pressing engagements and other work got in the way, but is it ever too late to talk James Bond? This time around there is a smorgasbord of titles to choose from including the most recent Bond, an infrequently seen Bond and three more original Bond classics to consider. Across the five titles we will see Sean Connery, Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig all inhabiting the iconic British spy, which one is your favorite is up to you. Personally I have found Craig's Bond to be a highly entertaining twist. I thought Brosnan may have been best suited to play Bond, but his films didn't exactly give me much to work with. Connery is...
