Sometimes, a particular subgenre simply isn’t your thing. I can count the number of haunted house movies I like with no fear of running out of fingers: Robert Wise’s original The Haunting; The Innocents; Crimson Peak; Hausu; Beetlejuice if you count comedies. Lake Mungo is a borderline case, not truly a haunted house movie for me, but a great film. I might also say The Others, but I last saw it about 20 years ago, so who knows? There’s one more I enjoy a lot, and we’ll come to that, but to cut a long story short, The Changeling had a bit of a mountain to climb with me. I’ll say this upfront: if you’re generally into ghost/haunting movies, you can add a star to my grade here.

Miranda Lambert’s first big break took place in 2003 when she was 19. She competed on a show called Nashville Star, and she finished in third place. Even though she didn’t win the competition, being on the show got her noticed by people in the music industry. And eventually, she got signed as a result. But even before she knew her fate in Nashville, Lambert was thankful she didn’t place first on the show. Here’s why.
Winners of ‘Nashville Star’ had to sing songs written by other people
Before Lambert went on Nashville Star, she’d already begun to sow the seeds of her career.
“I was writing songs and playing… I was playing bars in Texas for two and a half years before I even auditioned for Nashville Star,” she said on Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace? On HBO and CNN. ”So I had made a little independent record.

Western films have been a staple of American cinema for practically as long as movies have been made.
Movies in the Western genre are set in the American West, typically between the 1850s to the end of the 19th century. While it has been a stable genre — no pun intended! — it has also been the starting ground for several hybrid genres like Western comedies, Western musicals and horror Westerns.
No other genre’s history goes back quite as far as that of Westerns. According to documentarian David Gregory, “It has been estimated that up to 40 percent of all films made before 1960 were Westerns.”
Although the category reached its greatest popularity in the early and middle decades of the 20th century, with several becoming cult classics, films continued to be made even through droughts for Westerns in the late ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s. Actors have also made their name starring in Western films,...

June Blair, who portrayed the wife of her real-life husband, David Nelson, on the reality-bending ABC family comedy The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, has died. She was 90.
Blair died Monday of natural causes at her home in Sherman Oaks, her daughter-in-law Susan Nelson told The Hollywood Reporter.
Shortly after posing as Playboy‘s Playmate of the Month in January 1957, the redheaded Blair starred as a woman mixed up in a complex theft of narcotics in the film noir Hell Bound (1957), starring John Russell.
Then, in 1959 releases, she portrayed a vulnerable secretary at a construction firm in The Rabbit Trap, starring Ernest Borgnine, and was one of three daughters of a nuclear scientist (future Batman butler Alan Napier) — Venetia Stevenson and Diane Jergens were the others — in Island of Lost Women.

“It’s Halloween. I guess everyone’s entitled to one good scare,” Sheriff Brackett says in John Carpenter’s Halloween. While the seminal slasher delivered no shortage of creepy moments and well-placed scares, the Halloween movies aren’t the only ones to embrace holiday frights. Whether through subtle moments, gross-out gags, potent jump scares, or phobia-inducing chills, Halloween-set horror offers something for everyone – beyond the iconic franchise.
This Halloween, we look back at ten of the scariest moments in non-Halloween horror movies that take place around the best holiday of the year. Halloween, of course!

All leading men are not created equal. This is especially true when it comes to playing a love scene. Clark Gable was a man of action; when he lavished his affections on a woman, he knew they would be reciprocated. Cary Grant's approach was more playful; he used banter as foreplay, and let the woman decide when to take their sparring to the bedroom.
And then there was John Wayne. He was trickier. The Western superstar was adored primarily for his unruffled nature. He was the toughest guy in every scene, and we never truly believed his opponent could lick him or outdraw him. Romance was, at best, a secondary concern for him, but when a woman had her mind set on wooing him, he didn't exactly shoo them away. He might've been stolid, but he wasn't made entirely out of stone.

One can make a case that the genesis of horror onscreen was borne out of the Gothic literary movement in the 19th century. Crumbling castles; ghostly cries across the moors at night; fog so thick it can swallow the moonlight… and your will to live. These are all staples of some of the greatest works of Gothic horror on the page, and many of the greatest horror movies of the first half of the 20th century pulled directly from such iconography.
While Gothic horror has become rarer in recent times, as you can see from the below list, it yet beats like the telltale heart in the wall. Given the right direction, it can even thrive and escape from its cloistered hiding places. Hence we here have composed a list of not all the best Gothic horror movies, but enough to get you started in exploring the most alluring of shadows.

“To remember is, more and more, not to recall a story but to be able to call up a picture.” — Susan Sontag
My maternal grandfather, Shiwóyé hastiin in Apache, lived with my family during the latter years of his life in the late 1980s. I was about 9 years old and he would watch me play basketball on my makeshift hoop in the backyard while smoking hand-rolled cigarettes and spitting chewing tobacco into soda cans with the lids chopped off. He was mostly quiet, on occasion sharing stories about encounters with rattlesnakes around his horse corral, his review of western movies played on late-night cable, and stories about my mother that were lessons on respect. Sadly, many of the stories have been lost somewhere in memory since that time so long ago.

The ‘other’ Hollywood studio version of the Alamo story is quite good, with strong production values, exciting stunt battle action and something Republic Pictures didn’t manage very often, a solid screenplay. Sterling Hayden is Jim Bowie, this version’s central hero, with great backup from Anna Maria Alberghetti, Ernest Borgnine, J. Carrol Naish, and Ben Cooper. But best of all is that old hay-shaker Arthur Hunnicutt, as the movies’ best and most natural Davy Crockett.

The success of 70’s shockers like The Devils, The Exorcist and Alien – grindhouse films in big budget drag – opened the door to increasingly explicit studio fare – moviemakers were happy to accommodate and upped the ante in the bargain.
1980 alone saw the release of Sean Cunningham’s seminal slasher Friday the 13th, Ken Russell’s evolutionary freak out Altered States and, infamously, the unvarnished (and x-rated) depredations of Deodato’s Cannibal Holocaust.
But it was The Shining, with its rotting ghosts, blood-soaked hallways and promise of never-ending horror that personified Reagan era fright films.
Into this heavy atmosphere ambled Peter Medak’s The Changeling, an unassuming murder mystery disguised as a ghost story. Compared to its over the top contemporaries, Medak’s film seemed...

When it comes to the perfect haunted house films, horror aficionados usually list a handful of reliable classics. There’s 1944’s “The Uninvited,” starring Ray Milland and Ruth Hussey; 1961’s “The Innocents,” where Deborah Kerr takes on Henry James’ iconic ghost story “The Turn of the Screw”; and there’s 1963’s “The Haunting,” a pitch-perfect adaptation of Shirley Jackson’s tale of a truly diabolical haunted house.
However, 1980’s “The Changeling” often gets left out of this conversation — but there’s a reason Martin Scorsese calls it one of his favorite horror films of all time. The film stars Oscar winner George C. Scott as John Russell, a composer struggling with his own family grief who gets caught up in a supernatural mystery involving his new home, where the ghost of a child seeks to bring the house’s dark hidden history to light.

While ghost stories and the supernatural have made a recent resurgence at the box office (think The Conjuring and Hereditary), there was a time in horror when they lay as dormant as a long-forgotten spirit: the early ’80s. Okay, The Amityville Horror (1979) did big business, and The Shining (1980) did well, but these were exceptions, not rules. Audiences were more apt to take in masked killers and teens in peril than adults dealing with psychic crises of the soul and heart. Leave it to Severin Films to unearth and give the deluxe Blu-ray treatment to The Changeling (1980), Peter Medak’s riveting meditation on retribution and the deep shadows of the past that is long overdue for celebration.

Meet the lusty Amber St. Clare, a 17th century social climber determined to sleep her way to respectability. Gorgeous Linda Darnell gets her biggest role in a lavishly appointed period epic; Otto Preminger hated the assignment but his direction and Darryl Zanuck’s production are excellent. And it has one of the all-time great Hollywood movie scores, by David Raksin.

“Cannon for Cordoba,” a 1970 film produced by Vincent M. Wealthy U.S. ranchers and politicians are demanding that the Army secure the border with troops (an outcry for a $70 billion wall would have to wait another hundred years). A middling entry in the genre of blow-it-up big action spectacles, Paul Wendkos’ Spain-filmed western gives us all the excitement promised by the poster, but with some cardboard characters and lumpy storytelling. George Peppard is on the job, however, and once again proves he can carry a big picture, flaws and all.

Robot roll call! This also-ran robotic fantasy from the 1950s is precisely the kind of movie one would expect from Republic, a two-fisted anti-Commie tract for juveniles. The studio comes up with an impressive robo-hero, but short-changes us when it come time for action thrills. Still, as pointed out in Richard Harland Smith’s new commentary, Tobor filled the the kiddie hunger for sci-fi matinees, at least until Robby the Robot came along.

Anyone can watch a creepy movie at this time of year, but these are some of the best horror movies that actually take place on Halloween.
Halloween is such a glorious time for horror enthusiasts, partly because it allows both fans and television networks to indulge in horror movie marathons. It's a ton of fun to watch horror movies over the course of the night, but things feel almost special when the events of the film are actually going down on All Hallow's Eve; almost like what you're watching is happening parallel to you and outside your door while you're tucked away safely inside.
Or supposedly safely.
In honor of the season we thought we'd look at some of the best horror films that take place on Oct. 31, all of which should be added to any horror movie marathon.

Do houses have memories? These ones seem to. We pick our favorite haunted house movies and TV shows...
The haunted house is a staple horror device. Usually hundreds of years old, ideally massive, and imposing with as many turrets as its roof can bear, there’s nothing like a haunted house to give you the creeps.
But making this list wasn’t as easy as you’d think. To qualify for the list, a film had to feature an actual haunted house – which immediately rules out many of the films that spring to mind when you read that title. The Shining, for example, is about a haunted hotel, not a house. Paranormal Activity initially seems like it’s about a haunted house, but it’s not the house that’s haunted, and also the supernatural entity is a demon, not a ghost. Ditto Insidious, which has some ghosts,...

Nashville, Tenn. (AP) - A suspect wielding a hatchet and a gun inside a Nashville-area movie theater died after exchanging gunshots with a Swat team that stormed the theater, police said Wednesday.
The suspect, who was not identified, was armed with a gun and a hatchet at the Carmike Hickory 8 theater in Antioch, said Don Aaron, a spokesman for Metro Nashville police.
It was not immediately clear if anyone was wounded. Aaron said one person may have suffered a hatchet wound, but fire department spokesman Brian Haas said the agency had not treated anyone for any sort of injuries.
Aaron said an officer came into the theater and was fired upon by the suspect. The officer shot back, then backed off. After that, a Swat team came in, and there was another exchange of gunfire. The suspect was then found dead.

Schumer joined the senator, who is also her cousin, on Monday during a press conference to unveil a three-part plan that will make it more difficult for violent criminals and the mentally ill to obtain guns.
"We're here today to say enough is enough to mass shootings," Schumer said Monday.
The proposed legislation would create monetary rewards for states that submit all required records to the background check system.

Details have begun to emerge about the man who killed two people, injured nine and then shot himself in a Louisiana cinema on Thursday night. John Russell Houser, known as Rusty, was a 59 year old law school graduate who had previously been subject to a court order following allegations of domestic violence.
Questions have been raised over how Houser, who had a history of aligning himself with extremist groups like Hitler's Nazi Party and Golden Dawn, and who had received inpatient treatment for mental health problems inclining him to impulsive behaviour, was able to obtain a gun legally. His purchase of a Hi-Point .40 caliber semiautomatic pistol from a pawn shop in Alabama does not seem to have triggered any alarm despite the system of background checks now in place.

Police investigators are still trying to determine the motive behind John Russell "Rusty" Houser's shooting rampage at the Grand Theatre in Lafayette, Louisiana. On Sunday, Louisiana State Police Colonel Michael Edmonson said Houser had written down the date, time, location and movie title for the Trainwreck screening in his journal, indicating the shooting was pre-meditated. As details of Houser's troubled history with the women in his life emerge — including protective orders filed against him by both his daughter and estranged wife, and multiple television appearances filled with anti-women rhetoric — there has been increasing speculation that the man was, in many respects,

John Russell Houser, the shooter who killed two people and wounded nine others at the Grand Theatre Lafayette multiplex in Louisiana on Thursday, was likely copycatting Aurora, Colorado, shooter James Holmes, according to a leading authority on criminal psychology. “There’s a very strong likelihood this could be either and intentional or subliminal type of a copycat situation,” veteran former FBI profiler Clint Van Zandt told TheWrap. He noted the timing of Houser’s attack, which came just one week after Holmes was convicted of killing 12 people and injuring 70 others in the 2012 massacre in Aurora. Houser, Van Zandt said, “is.

Throughout the vast history of cinema the profession of law enforcement has been portrayed heavily and made its mark on the big screen in both dramatic and comical fodder. Whether it be straight up cops and robbers or crooked officers on the take in gangster flicks or ant-hero gun-slinging loners trying to buck the system the presence of crime-busting cads never fail to add compelling, if not at times over-exaggerated, insight into the world of law-enforcing personalities.
The one element of the law-enforcing community that seems somewhat limited but still registers mightily in some cinematic arenas is the concept of the sheriff. Sheriffs do cast a prominent shadow in all sorts of fields in the movies: westerns, medieval times, contemporary country car-chasing farces and even some urban melodramas.

20. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) directed by Wes Craven
Before he was the one-line-loving, crassly, campy class clown known as Freddy, Fred Krueger was the stuff of genuine nightmares. Scarred and grinning in his striped wool sweater, Fred prowls the dreamscape realm of the local high schoolers, the children upon whom he once preyed before their parents got smart and burned him alive.
