A broad range of titles, animation styles and plenty of music define this season’s animated feature race, with some expected contenders still to debut.
For instance, as the studio celebrates its centennial, Walt Disney Animation Studios hopes to grab one of the five nomination slots with its Nov. 22 musical Wish, which tells the story of how Disney’s wishing star came to be. Its voice cast is led by Ariana DeBose as young protagonist Asha and Chris Pine as villainous King Magnifico. The cast performs a collection of original songs from Julia Michaels and Benjamin Rice, including “This Wish,” “I’m a Star” and “This Is the Thanks I Get.” Oscar winner Chris Buck (Frozen) and Fawn Veerasunthorn direct, and Disney Animation chief creative officer and Oscar winner Jennifer Lee is a writer and executive producer.

After 2023’s earlier surprise comedic family gem You Are Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah, Adam Sandler and his Happy Madison Productions have done it again for Netflix, this time in the delightful and remarkably wise CGI animated feature Leo. It is a charmer for kids and their parents who get a few lessons here along the way as well.
Sandler voices 74-year-old Iguana, Leo, as if he were about to take the lectern at a Friar’s Roast. Leo has lived his whole life on display in a fifth grade classroom with revolving groups of kids since the 1940s. Next to him is Bff Squirtle, a fast talking turtle voiced memorably by Bill Burr. They are kind of the Bert and Ernie of the classroom, talking only to each other, and never revealing to the kids or teachers that they can actually converse with humans too. Leo, for whatever reason,...

Leo, the new Adam Sandler animated comedy, is a movie with an identity crisis. A sincere and sweet kids’ movie mashed up with a more subversive adult skewering of that genre, it’s funny and touching in parts but never adds up to a cohesive whole. It’s a fine distraction for family night, but never establishes its own identity.
Sandler dons a curmudgeonly voice as the titular character, a lizard who’s spent his entire life in a terrarium inside a fifth grade classroom. Old and jaded, Leo spends his days critiquing the kids and bemoaning the current state of parents and their children alongside his best friend, an equally cranky turtle named Squirtle, voiced by Bill Burr. When the 74-year-old Leo learns that he’s only one year away from the end of his anticipated lifespan, he plots an escape so that he can finally enjoy the high life in the Everglades.

‘Leo’ Review: Adam Sandler Plays a Literal Teacher’s Pet in Winning Toon From the ‘TV Funhouse’ Team
“Perhaps if people talked less, animals would talk more,” observes one of the human characters in “Charlotte’s Web,” a kiddie classic that serves as both the butt of several jokes and an inspiration for Adam Sandler’s animated “Leo,” an endearing Netflix original that strikes just the right balance between heart and fart jokes.
Basing the way Leo sounds on his squeaky-scratchy, slightly guttural impression of the late Hollywood agent Bernie Brillstein, Sandler voices a crusty old iguana who’s spent three-quarters of a century — practically his entire life — trapped in an elementary school classroom. Leo’s wisdom is largely limited to what’s taught in fifth grade, though he’s observed enough kids over his 74 years that the lizard reckons he’s qualified to advise this crop. Truth be told, he’s cheaper and more consistently helpful than your typical child psychologist.

The lessons in Netflix’s new animated coming-of-age musical Leo might be clichéd, but they are presented with enough heart to turn even the most cynical viewers into fans of the titular reptile.
Leo, voiced by Adam Sandler, is a lizard, and he’s lived in the same classroom for nearly 80 years. Hundreds of fifth-graders have walked through the halls of Fort Myer Elementary School, so there’s not much Leo hasn’t seen when it comes to angsty preteens and their anxious parents. Their aesthetics and preoccupations have changed — the most recent class of students are glued to their phones and no longer sporting mohawks — but their problems are largely the same. From his tank, which he shares with a turtle named Squirtle (Bill Burr), Leo observes each new batch of kids with a distant curiosity.
All of that shifts when Leo overhears an adult during parent-teacher conferences remarking on his age.

It’s a cool indie weekend when the new album by André 3000, New Blue Sun, has morphed into a “cinematic listening experience.” Variance Films is putting the experience, directed by Terence Nance, into three theaters in NYC (IFC Center), LA (Cinepolis Inglewood) and Atlanta (Tara).
Right now, it’s just those locations but after this weekend, “We will see what happens, where the wind takes us,” said Variance CEO Dylan Marchetti. “I swear, I wanted to make a ‘visual album’ but this is literally the way the wind blew me this time,” André has said.
Asked what’s is on the screen, Marchetti said, “Vibes.”
New Blue Sun, out today, is André’s debut solo album, his first full-length LP since his group Outkast released its last record 17 years ago. He described it as “an entirely instrumental album centered around woodwinds; a celebratory piece of work in the form of a living,...

There’s a war going on inside many Adam Sandler movies and the loser is frequently the audience. Sandler may be an innately lovable performer, but his sense of humor is also abrasive and immature. So for every great Sandler comedy like “Happy Gilmore” or the overlooked “Hubie Halloween” — films that strike a satisfying balance between charm and adolescent weirdness — there are also films like “That’s My Boy” and “Jack and Jill,” where our affection for Sandler can’t quite compensate for an overwhelming cavalcade of mean-spirited “jokes” that confuse bullying with whimsy.
But when Sandler delves into the world of family-friendly animation he usually sets aside his vicious streak, so his childish humor and uncomplicated moralizing can shine through. You won’t find much of his immaturity in the “Hotel Transylvania” movies or in his new animated Netflix film “Leo” — which he co-wrote with Robert Smigel and Paul Sado...

It's a little humbling to realize that Adam Sandler is in his mid-fifties, just a few years away from the milestone birthday of 60 years old. Sandler is all but enshrined as a comedy icon, having recently received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor and being known to one generation as a mischievous part of "Saturday Night Live" and to another for his roles in animated films like "Hotel Transylvania." Mortality and legacy are -- at least somewhat -- a part of Sandler's latest project, an animated film from Netflix (where he's primarily worked for the last few years). The film is "Leo," which coasts on irresistible charm even when the plot is a bit light. Though "Leo" is perhaps not the most groundbreaking animated film of the year, its gentle tone and emotion mixed with some standard anarchic gags from the Happy Madison school of comedy work in its favor.

If you’ve ever wanted to see Adam Sandler play a septuagenarian talking lizard, then Netflix’s new Leo trailer is for you. Check out the preview of the animated musical comedy ahead of its November 21st release date below.
In the film, Sandler stars as the titular 74-year-old lizard, who has shared a terrarium with a turtle named Squirtle (Bill Burr) in the same Florida classroom for decades. After learning he only has a year left to live, the jaded pet plots an escape to the outside world, but ends up bonding with the students in this year’s class instead after they find out he can talk. “This is a tough time, but these are the best years,” he tells one student.
Leo was directed by Robert Marianetti, David Wachtenheim, and Saturday Night Live alum Robert Smigel, the latter of whom co-wrote the movie with Sandler and Paul Sado.

Netflix animated “Leo” stars Adam Sandler as an elderly lizard living in a Florida classroom who decides to escape after being told he only has one year to live.
While the premise sounds endearingly wacky, writer-producer Sandler makes the animated film a family affair with daughters Sadie and Sunny Sandler, plus wife Jackie Sandler, co-starring. Sunny Sandler recently led breakout Netflix teen film “You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah.”

Opera Man. Barry Egan. Billy Madison. Happy Gilmore. Dracula. Howard Ratner. Leo the Lizard??
If that last name doesn't sound familiar to you, it might very soon. As you can likely tell from the names preceding it, Adam Sandler has portrayed an impressively large number of memorable characters on-screen throughout his career. Although he's most well-known for his comedies (resulting in his being lauded when he takes on a dramatic project such as "Punch Drunk Love" or "Uncut Gems"), even a cursory glance at Sandler's resumé reveals his impressive range of projects in a variety of genres and mediums.
One of those mediums is animation, as best seen in "Eight Crazy Nights" or his successful "Hotel Transylvania" franchise. This November, Sandler hopes Leo the Lizard will become his newest triumph within the medium, when "Leo" premieres on Netflix. "Leo" isn't a mere voice acting gig for Sandler, either; he's a...

“Back to school. Back to school. Back to school.” It’s the end of the summer, and many are singing the back-to-school song that Adam Sandler once sang in his beloved classic, Billy Madison. Even Adam Sandler. Netflix has released the trailer for their newest animated original for the whole family, Leo. Sandler plays the titular Leo — the class pet lizard. Joining Sandler in an against-type of role is comedian Bill Burr, whose normal profanity-laced humor takes a break in lieu of family-friendly comedy. Throughout Adam Sandler's deeply wide-ranging career, the talented actor has delivered some pretty wild performances that have ping-ponged from one extreme to the other. After his run through the '90s and early aughts included hits like "Happy Gilmore," "The Wedding Singer," and especially "Punch-Drunk Love," he more or less lapsed into autopilot mode with several undemanding comedies before roaring back to life with "Sandy Wexler," "The Meyerowitz Stories," and "Uncut Gems." Well, now audiences are about to see Sandler as they never have before: as a lizard.

Adam Sandler stars in a Netflix movie of a different sort in the first teaser trailer for the original animated film “Leo,” which he also co-wrote with longtime collaborator Robert Smigel.
Described as a “coming-of-age musical comedy,” Sandler voices a 74-year-old lizard who’s been stuck in the same Florida classroom for decades. When he discovers he only has one year left to live (grim stuff!), he plots an escape — only to get “caught up in the problems of his anxious students.”
The animated film was directed by the trio of Robert Marianetti, Robert Smigel and David Wachtenheim. The screenplay was written by Robert Smigel, Adam Sandler, Paul Sado. “Leo” was produced by Happy Madison.
“Leo” will be streaming on Netflix on Nov. 21, just in time for Thanksgiving.
Along with Sandler and Burr, the film also features the voices of Cecily Strong, Jason Alexander, Rob Schneider, Sadie Sandler, Sunny Sandler,...

As part of Netflix’s appearance this week at the Annecy International Animation Festival, the streaming service hosted a sneak peek at upcoming work and the world premiere of Nimona, the anticipated adaptation of Nd Stevenson’s graphic novel coming to the platform on June 30. Additionally, the studio announced that Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget — Aardman Animations’ anticipated sequel to 2000’s Chicken Run — will get a Dec. 15 release.
In a new clip from the sequel to Chicken Run — from the Oscar-winning studio behind Wallace and Gromit and Shawn the Sheep — the Annecy audience was introduced to Molly (Bella Ramsey), the daughter of Chicken Run‘s Ginger (Thandiwe Newton) and Rocky (Zachary Levi). Molly is among those captured and placed in a truck carting chickens to a new fortress-like farm. After a classic Aardman chase — with Ginger, Rocky and others in hot pursuit of the truck — they begin to devise a rescue plan.

The Sandman is certainly keeping himself busy these days, and he doesn't show any signs of slowing down anytime soon. Adam Sandler starred in the basketball drama "Hustle" for Netflix earlier this summer, which came only a few months after announcing he was reuniting with The Safdie Brothers, the team behind his Oscar-snubbed performance in "Uncut Gems." Over the years, Sandler has proven he is more than capable of delivering serious, dramatic performances in films like "Punch Drunk Love," "The Meyerowitz Stories," and "Reign Over Me." But to a lot of folks, Sandler will forever be associated with slapstick comedies from the 1990s and groan-inducing films of the 2010s. Sandler is a bit of an enigma, but he's also someone who specifically works on projects because he wants to, not because he feels like it's expected of him.

Adam Sandler may have chosen to title his Netflix stand-up special Adam Sandler: 100% Fresh as an impudent jab at the critics who consistently trash his comedies, but it’s garnering the actor some of the best reviews of his career. That’s deservedly so, given that the special contains Sandler’s funniest and most wide-ranging material in years. Sandy Wexler is the latest Netflix original film from comedian/actor Adam Sandler – part of his four picture deal with the streaming service – and tells the story of the titular character: a talent manager working in Los Angeles in the 1990s who diligently represents a group of eccentric clients on the fringes of show business. His single-minded devotion is put to the test when he falls in love with his newest client, Courtney Clarke (Jennifer Hudson), a tremendously talented singer who he discovers at an amusement park.
If there’s one thing I can count on from my fellow movie bloggers, it’s their intense disdain for the films of Adam Sandler; in particular those made as part of Sandler’s Netflix deal.

Following up on The Ridiculous Six and wildly over-the-top actioner The Do-Over, Adam Sandler is all set to execute stage three of his four-picture deal with Netflix in the form of Sandy Wexler.
It’ll premiere on April 14th, and in order to generate some semblance of excitement, the online streamer has today rolled out the really rather bizarre first trailer. Unlike The Ridiculous Six (Western) and The Do-Over (action/comedy), Sandy Wexler doesn’t quite know which genre it belongs to. Opening with a shot of Sandler as the bumbling talent manager, the footage above ranges from hammy melodrama to oddball comedy all in the space of two minutes, with cameos from the likes of Chris Rock to Conan O’Brien thrown in for good measure. Can it find an audience in two months’ time? It’s worth remembering that The Do-Over found its way into Netflix’s top...

In 2014, Netflix signed a deal with Adam Sandler to star in and produce four films for the streaming service. The first movie in the pact was “The Ridiculous 6,” which was torn to pieces by critics, though Netflix later stated it was the most-watched movie on the platform in its first 30 days of availability. Then came “The Do-Over,” again panned by critics, and now we have the first teaser trailer for his third offering, “Sandy Wexler.”
This time around Sander stars as the titular character, a talent manager working in Los Angeles in the ‘90s who represents a group of eccentric clients in show biz. His devotion is put to the test when he falls in love with his newest client, Courtney Clarke (Jennifer Hudson), an incredible singer who he discovers at an amusement park.
The first teaser introduces audiences to Wexler crashing a movie scene and being ushered out.

Chicago – The newest Adam Sandler film that doesn’t feature him dressed like a chubby middle schooler is really bad, but in a special way. Similarly, it is an instant classic in the legacy of bizarre disasters, a footnote in writer/director history that must be witnessed to be fully understood.
Part of its perplexity is how the film is always in grasp as it shows itself, and how you can reach out and try to bring it back home, but then it explodes. This is one of those films where its flaws are more believable as a conspiracy than a misjudgment. Someone, please, let the police know that writer/director Tom McCarthy is missing, and someone has his shoes.

The buzz about Adam Sandler's performance in The Cobbler following a premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival hasn't been significant, and that's mostly because reviews of the film itself haven't exactly been glowing. Now the first international trailer has arrived and this doesn't feel like it's directed by Thomas McCarthy (The Station Agent, Win Win) at all. It feels like one of the films they forgot to place somewhere in Funny People. That's not to say it looks absolutely terrible, but there's something that just doesn't feel right. Full disclosure: I am a frustrated Adam Sandler fan. Before you gasp in horror and dismiss everything I’ve ever written, hear me out. The operative word here is ‘frustrated.’ What is the cause of my discontentment? Well, about 95% of his film output, to be precise. I have exactly zero interest in Grown Ups, or its sequel. You could not pay me to invest time in Don’t Mess With The Zohan, and I have no intention of watching Blended, ever.
Punch-Drunk Love, however, is one of my favourite movies – largely due to Sandler’s performance – and I have a deep appreciation for Funny People. I even have a soft spot for Spanglish, since we’re sharing details. What do these films have in common? They require Sandler to act with real emotional depth – and that is something I have been waiting for him to do again since 2009. I...

It's great to know Adam Sandler has a new film coming up that doesn't rely on adults acting like juveniles or forces him to dress up in women's clothing as he will play a lonely New York shoe repairman in Thomas McCarthy's The Cobbler. McCarthy, who is best known for films such as The Station Agent, The Visitor and Win Win, co-wrote the film with Paul Sado, which centers on Sandler's character who starts to sense he's let life pass him by -- going nowhere while fixing the shoes of more-assertive customers taking vacations and living adventures. Things change, though, when he discovers a family heirloom that magically lets him "walk in another man's shoes" and see the world differently. While Sandler is most often associated with his stupid comedies it's films such as Punch-Drunk Love and Reign Over Me that show there is more to him than baby talk and fart jokes.

It's been far too long since Adam Sandler took a break from his stupid comedies like Grown Ups 2, That's My Boy and other garbage we'd rather forget about. Thankfully, Sandler is getting back to some solid filmmaking akin to his praiseworthy turns in films like Punch-Drunk Love, Spanglish and Reign Over Me. Director Thomas McCarthy (Win Win, The Station Agent) has Sandler leading his film The Cobbler, and we have a first look photo from the film. Sandler certainly looks tired (that's probably the idea) sipping some coffee out in front of his shoe shop. Hopefully McCarthy and Sandler deliver a charming little flick. He’s only just made a deal to appear in Shawn Levy’s latest trip to the family franchise well, Night At The Museum 3, but Dan Stevens just can’t stop lining up projects. According to Variety, he’s now planning to fit in work on Tom McCarthy’s new drama, The Cobbler before he reports to Ben Stiller and co.McCarthy’s latest caused waves when he cast Adam Sandler as the lead back in September. Though most of the details are still being kept quiet, the original reports suggested that the plot follows a shoe repair expert who has a strange ability to step into the lives of those whose footwear he works on. We’ll have to wait and see if that turns out to be the case. Flying under the radar, McCarthy appears to already be at work on the film, which was co-written by Paul Sado.

Cinematical has just received a very intriguing new trailer for Brad Coley's The Undeserved, a drama that will be available 'on demand' via various cable systems starting on August 12.
The film snuck under my radar when it traveled the film festival circuit (Mill Valley, Denver, Ashland, Nantucket) a while back, but Dennis Harvey of Variety described it as "a somewhat overloaded yet impressive feature debut by writer-helmer Brad Coley that's a sufficiently edgy update of 'Peyton Place'-style ensemble melodramatics." Coley spent three months on location, according to the film's official site, "shooting in sequence without a pre-written script, and developing his story with his cast through an organic process of character immersion."
The story involves a murder mystery, so, naturally enough, the characters all harbor deep secrets. Science prodigy Charlie (James Martinez) wins a scholarship, but his girlfriend Joy (Autumn Dornfield) disappears after dropping out from the alternative high school they both attend.

The story involves a murder mystery, so, naturally enough, the characters all harbor deep secrets. Science prodigy Charlie (James Martinez) wins a scholarship, but his girlfriend Joy (Autumn Dornfield) disappears after dropping out from the alternative high school they both attend.
