His wife, actress Sarah Lancashire, gave birth to
their first son at London's Portland Hospital, weighing in at 8lb 2oz.

In 1977 he graduated from the University of Warwick with a degree in
English and European Literature.
Before he joined the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) he was a
local newspaper reporter in Kent, a government press officer and a
teacher with Voluntary Service Overseas.
He was at Channel 4 as Controller of Factual Programmes for three
years, leading a team of eight Commissioning Editors. He also devised
the Granada/Sky Sports channel MUFC TV.
