Roland A. Pattillo, the gynecologic oncologist who played a pivotal role in bringing the case of Henrietta Lacks to public awareness and was played by Ruben Santiago-Hudson in the 2017 HBO movie The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, died of Parkinson’s disease on May 3 at his home outside Atlanta. He was 89.
His death went largely unreported until recent articles in The Nation and The New York Times.
Although the so-called “HeLa” cell line had been used since the 1950s for scientific research that helped develop the polio vaccine, HIV treatments and many other medical advances, the human source of the cell line – Henrietta Lacks, a 31-year-old Black woman who died of cervical cancer in 1951 – was largely unknown outside the medical community. In the 1990s, Pattillo made it his mission to celebrate Lacks and her immense contribution to medical research.

All Arts’ upcoming non-fiction feature “Manhattan Theatre Club, a Home for Artists” will explore the 50-year history of one of the most impactful off-Broadway theaters in New York. Helmed by the club’s very own Lynne Meadow and Barry Grove, the film stitches together archival footage and photos and interviews with stars like Laura Linney, Edie Falco, Sam Waterston and Sarah Jessica Parker.
“Through their stewardship of Manhattan Theatre Club, Lynne Meadow and Barry Grove have left an indelible mark on the theatrical landscape for decades to come,” said Joe Harrell, executive producer of All Arts, a Wnet group streaming platform and broadcast channel based in New York. “Their story champions the vital role of nonprofit theaters in allowing artists to take risks, explore innovative ideas and challenge conventions.”
The Manhattan Theatre Club was founded in 1970 at Stage 73 but took off under the guidance of Meadow as artistic director and Grove as executive producer.

Aaron Sorkin‘s The West Wing is one of the most optimistic shows to air on television. From 1999 to 2006, President Josiah “Jed” Bartlet, played by the versatile veteran actor Martin Sheen, and his idealistic staff of deep thinkers presented the illusion that Capitol Hill was where the finest minds in America worked together to find the right answers, and got bonus points for the most self-righteous. The NBC series began the same year as HBO’s The Sopranos, and could be seen as its polar opposite, though the two shows had many similarities. Both were considered dramas, but had so many individual laugh lines they veered into comedy. Each featured a strong leader who faced crises, at home and abroad.
Starting with the very first episode, President Bartlet confronted beltway blowback, global dissension, and harsh life-threatening decisions. Some of these issues were personal, because a president’s private life affects the political process.

For East New York fans, CBS' finalization of its 2023-2024 schedule came with devastating news.
Since the network announced that the freshman cop drama was canceled, fan groups have organized petition signing and social media campaigns to save their beloved show.
It's a long shot, but let's hope it works. There are a ton of reasons East New York has a dedicated fan base; this show deserves an 11th-hour reprieve.
While there are many cop shows on the air, none was quite like this one.
Rather than focusing on the parts of the Big Apple that tourists usually frequent, this series took place in a lower-income, majority Black and Brown neighborhood.

Despite a sizable outcry from devoted fans, East New York ended its one-season run on CBS Sunday.
The Warner Bros. TV series from creators William Finkelstein and Mike Flynn wrapped with a sentimental gathering of its leads having one last drink together — Deputy Inspector Regina Haywood (the terrific Amanda Warren), Assistant Chief John Suarez (Jimmy Smits), Det. Crystal Morales (Elizabeth Rodriguez), Det. Tommy Killian (Kevin Rankin), Officer Brandy Quinlan (breakout Olivia Luccardi), Officer Marvin Sandeford (Ruben Santiago-Hudson), Officer Andre Bentley (Lavel Schley) and Capt. Stan Yenko (Richard Kind).
Yenko gave a toast to Haywood, who thanked her for bringing him back onto the force where he “came to love it all over again.” His words brought Haywood to tears.
The episode wrapped up a double homicide from the previous episode in Ruskin Gardens, where Quinlan had been living as part of Haywood’s unique initiative to have officers live in crime-ridden areas.

East New York was cancelled by CBS earlier this week, but there is still some hope that the series could be saved and renewed for a second season. The show's studio, Warner Bros Television, had started to informally shop the series to other outlets in recent weeks when renewal talks with CBS weren't going as well as hoped.
Starring Amanda Warren, Jimmy Smits, Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Kevin Rankin, Richard Kind, Elizabeth Rodriguez, Olivia Luccardi, and Lavel Schley, East New York revolves around the officers and detectives of the 74th precinct in the East New York neighborhood of Brooklyn.

It was good news-bad news day for CBS drama viewers yesterday. Fans of S.W.A.T. rejoiced when the network reversed its cancellation decision and renewed the veteran procedural for a 13-episode seventh and final season. But that tipped the scale for another CBS cop drama, freshman East New York, which was canceled shortly after. And in a case of bad timing, by being axed during a writers strike, East New York is far less likely to get a reprieve.
While not as established as S.W.A.T., East New York, starring Amanda Warren, has developed a loyal following, and its cancellation has sparked a backlash, especially in light of the fact that the cop show drew bigger linear numbers than two other CBS drama series that have been renewed for next season, fellow freshman So Help Me Todd and CSI: Vegas, both of which come from CBS’ sister studios CBS Studios.

Not all the news coming out of CBS today is good news: After reversing its decision to cancel S.W.A.T., the Eye network has cancelled freshman dramas East New York and True Lies, TVLine has learned.
East New York starred Amanda Warren as Deputy Inspector Regina Haywood, who ran a police station in a working-class Brooklyn neighborhood. CBS has canceled both the police procedural “East New York” and “True Lies” after just one season.
According to sources, the decision to cancel the series came down to CBS haggling with the series’ studio Warner Bros. Television over the show’s budget, which included CBS asking that the cast of the show not get the customary pay increases going into the second season. It has previously been reported that CBS has renewed other shows on its lineup, like the comedy “Bob Hearts Abishola,” after asking the cast to take pay cuts or by shifting series regulars to recurring status.

CBS has canceled cop drama East New York, starring Amanda Warren, after one season.
The decision comes after CBS today reversed its Friday decision to cancel S.W.A.T., renewing the veteran drama for a 13-episode seventh and final season.
It also follows lengthy renewal negotiations between the network and East New York‘s lead studio, Warner Bros. Television. In addition to the inevitable squabbles over budget, there was an additional business issue that complicated talks. As Deadline reported, it had to do with additional streaming rights CBS had requested that go beyond the now-standard stacking, which allows networks to stream current season of their series on their digital platforms.

However, progress had been made and East New York‘s renewal prospects went up Friday when CBS, somewhat surprisingly, canceled long-running drama S.W.A.T. However, following backlash from fans, S.W.A.T. was uncanceled.

All you need to do to understand the animating injustice of Viola Davis's career is scan through her Wikipedia biography, and note the puzzling dynamic of going from Tony-winning leads on Broadway in the late 1990s and early 2000s to, at best, supporting turns in studio movies. How was this Juilliard-trained dynamo who routinely set New York City stages ablaze getting relegated to undernourished roles in films starring actors she could dust straight off the screen?
If you're at all aware of how things work in the United States of America, you know the answer. Davis certainly does, and she shouted it from the mountaintop at a Woman in the World event in 2018:
"I have a career that's probably comparable to Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore, Sigourney Weaver. They all came out of Yale; they came out of Julliard; they came out of NYU. They had the same path as me.

The Devil’s Advocate is a horror movie directed by Taylor Hackford starring Al Pacino, Keanu Reeves and Charlize Theron.
About the Movie The Devil’s Advocate
The Devil’s Advocate has Al Pacino at his best and if we want to see him in his Italian acting that is so personal, this is the movie to watch: he dances Flamenco style and whatever they throw at him and invoques the rage of God. Keanu Reeves is… passably good but don´t forget this actor has worked with Coppola and Scorsese so he must be pretty special… and Charlize Theron who is great in the role of the wife of lawyer Kevin Lomax.
Storyline (let´s hope this is not a Spoiler Alert): our star is a unscrupulos lawyer that doesn´t hesitate in defending supposed (more than guilty) pedophiles to pocket some good cash. With these high morals, there is only...

Good news first: Bentley's going to be okay.
While it was unlikely that CBS' newest police procedural would kill off a main character halfway through its freshman season, you never know.
East New York Season 1 Episode 10 dealt with the aftermath of Bentley's shooting. It was an emotional, gripping hour of television that showed how difficult it is to be a cop in these circumstances.
All the cops that worked with Bentley were shocked and upset by the shooting, but they didn't have time to get in their feelings. They prioritized finding out who shot Bentley and bringing that person to justice.
Bentley's mother was the one who did most of the grieving and worrying. She sat vigil at the hospital, ran interference when the cops wanted to spend too much time questioning her son and demanded to know why his partner hadn't come to visit.

The last thing Officer Marvin Sandeford (Ruben Santiago-Hudson) wants to do after watching Officer Andre Bentley (Lavel Schley) get shot right in front of him is exactly what he has to do in the East New York winter premiere on January 8, and TV Insider has an exclusive sneak peek. After checking on how Officer Brandy Quinlan (Olivia Luccardi) is doing, Sandeford shares that he blames himself. “I was too slow. Younger reflexes might have got the shot off in time.” She insists he can’t know that, then notices blood under his fingernails. As soon as Sandeford sees Deputy Inspector Regina Haywood (Amanda Warren), he hurries over to ask if he can be in the observation room while the suspect is questioned. “Absolutely not,” she tells him. “I gotta tell you, it’s almost impossible staying sidelined from all of this,” Sandeford admits, trying to convince her to let him...

This review originally ran June 13, 2022, in conjunction with the film’s world premiere at the Tribeca Festival.
Theater buffs who couldn’t snag a seat at this year’s Tony Awards will find some solace in “Broadway Rising,” a heartfelt tribute to all the shows that were shuttered between 2020 and 2021.
It does initially seem as though the film might suffer from a touch of solipsism, as actors talk expansively about centering their feelings during a period that wrought so much suffering across the globe. But director Amy Rice (“By the People”) wisely expands the story beyond the stage stars, making the impactful case that behind the bright lights lies an entire ecosystem essential to the city.
As such, she includes a range of representatives from the tens of thousands of Broadway workers who found themselves unemployed and worse during the early days of Covid-19.

The early success of the CBS drama East New York has been no less than “an embarrassment of riches” for series lead Amanda Warren.

Exclusive: Christine Holder and Mark Holder are no longer executive producers of the new CBS drama series East New York, from Warner Bros Television.

One of the most symphonic works of August Wilson’s ten-play cycle about Black experience in the 20th Century, The Piano Lesson takes place in Pittsburgh in 1936, as the Great Migration was delivering African Americans to an uncertain future in the North, even as the brutal legacy of their Southern past maintained its hold on them. That difficult reconciliation with the promise of freedom is represented through a brother and sister at odds over the family heirloom, a piano polished with the tears and blood of their late mother.
The musical instrument at the center of their standoff is among Wilson’s most powerfully loaded symbols, its woodwork adorned with ornate carvings of the siblings’ enslaved ancestors done by their great grandfather. And its history is recounted here as a mesmerizing invocation of the past by Samuel L. Jackson in a thrilling return...

The Covid safety managers, stage managers, cast and crews that kept Broadway productions going during the 2021-2022 season were among those honored during the 2022 Tony Awards, held Sunday night at Radio City Music Hall.
During the ceremony one of the biggest nods to the pandemic-affected season, which began with theaters reopening in 2021 after being dark for more than a year, was during Skylar Astin and Marcia Gay Harden’s presentation of the featured actress in a play award when Covid safety managers were shouted out and thunderously cheered by the Tonys audience.
“It took the entire community to bring Broadway back, to welcome almost 7 million theater goers to a shortened season,” Harden said. “The Broadway League celebrates the crucial role played by the Covid safety managers. One hundred and fifty are here tonight as guests of the Tonys.”

For a Broadway season that will go down in the record books for its abbreviated 42-week length, Covid cancelations and stark decline in attendance attributable at least in part to New York City’s pandemic-era dearth of tourists, the 2021-22 theatrical season was surprisingly healthy in one very significant way: As this year’s Tony Awards nomination roster makes clear, Broadway venues were well-stocked with the talent and quality that can make trophy-voting an endless cycle of on-the-other-hand second guessing and nitpicking.
In a Broadway season that made noticeable (if never enough) strides in presenting new creative voices – Black artists, Queer artists, artists who brought downtown avant-garde sensibilities uptown – so much of the work represented in this year’s Tony nominations roster is bold in ways that would have been unthinkable just a couple seasons ago before the disaster of Covid and the miracle of Black Lives Matter arrived to shake things up.

CBS is changing focus.
After brutally slaying a good portion of their comedy lineup and Magnum Pi, the network announced three drama pickups.
They've picked up none of the comedies they had under consideration.
The best news of the day by a long margin is that CBS formally picked up Fire Country (formerly known as Cal Fire) from CBS Studios.
This series has been exciting our readers since it was first announced, and we couldn't agree more. This one comes from Seal Team's Max Thieriot, who co-wrote the story and serves as an executive producer.
It's co-written by executive producers Tony Phelan & Joan Rater. Other EPs include James Strong (pilot only), David Grae, Jerry Bruckheimer, Jonathan Littman, and KristieAnne Reed (Jerry Bruckheimer Television)
The official logline is: Seeking redemption and a shortened prison sentence, young convict Bode Donovan joins a firefighting program that returns him to his small Northern California hometown,...
