The death of icon Raquel Welch sparked conversations about her life and career and how she became a sex symbol early on. She once discussed how things could go wrong for actors like her with Johnny Carson. In their discussion, she revealed the “sex kitten” movie role she couldn’t live down for decades. But was the late-show legend prepared to let her do it then?

After launching a movie career in the ’60s, Welch eventually made a name for herself as a sex symbol. She once said that leaning into “sex kitten” roles early on was a way to open other doors, noting she wasn’t “a fool” about her appeal (per Los Angeles Times).
She explained, “I realized when I came along [that] I wasn’t Meryl Streep who had been put into a bikini.

Raquel Welch, the movie star and model Playboy declared "the most desirable woman of the 1970s," has died at the age of 82. According to her manager, Steve Sauer, (via CNN) Welch passed away after a "brief illness."
Welch was a much-buzzed-about Hollywood ingenue throughout the early 1960s before attaining international stardom in 1966's sci-fi classic "Fantastic Voyage" and the prehistoric Hammer flick "One Million Years B.C." While the latter movie did little to enhance her reputation as an actor, the sight of Welch in a two-piece deerskin bikini made her the pin-up heir to Marilyn Monroe.
Welch's physical beauty was undeniable, and she embraced her sex symbol status. But the Latina performer, who adopted her first husband's last name to avoid the kind of typecasting that drove Rita Moreno from Hollywood at the height of her popularity, knew she was more than just a pretty face, and proved it time and again throughout her career.

Welch’s manager, Steve Sauer said that she, “passed away peacefully early this morning after a brief illness.”
Even though she only had three lines of dialogue in the film One Million Years B.C., the promotional posters of Welch in a bikini became best-selling and turned her into an international sex symbol.

Raquel Welch is dead at the age of 82. Her manager Steve Sauer broke the news to People.
Widely known as a “sex symbol” in the 1960s, when her beauty and iconic fur bikini was practically the sole selling point of the hit film “One Million Years B.C.,” Welch became something much more in her later years.
Born in Chicago and raised in San Diego, Welch was the daughter of an immigrant from Bolivia. Her journey through Hollywood in the ’60s and beyond represents the fraught evolution of representation on the big screen. Married at 18, the girl originally named Jo Raquel Tejada kept her husband’s Anglo name even after her separation from him in her bid to make it big in Hollywood — and avoid the typecasting of Latina actresses typical of the time.
Having won beauty pageants since the age of 14, Welch studied theater at San Diego State College, and worked as a cocktail waitress,...

Exclusive: The lead in the NBC drama pilot Playboy is being recast. Third Watch alum Eddie Cibrian has been tapped for the role, replacing Jeff Hephner, who landed the part last week after a marathon of auditions. The decision was made after the pilot's table read. Sources close to the show say that Hephner, who had never played a major role on a series before, was great in the tests, and the producers love him as an actor, but he didn't work out in the pilot, whose cast includes Laura Benanti, Amber Heard, Naturi Naughton and David Krumholtz. Cibrian, who was finalist for the Playboy lead, is expected start immediately as the pilot is slated to begin filming in Chicago on Tuesday. Playboy, from 20th Century Fox TV, Imagine TV and writer/executive producer Chad Hodge, is set at the Playboy Club in Chicago in 1963. It centers on Nick Dalton...

Steve Carell has just landed a new acting gig. He will star in a new film called Dogs of Bable, based off a novel from Carolyn Parkhurst. The script for the film was written by Jamie Linden (Ten Year, Dear John, We Are Marshall). This sounds like an interestingly dark film.

The only witness to her death is their dog Lorelei. In Paul's grief-stricken search for answers, he endeavors to teach Lorelei to talk in the hopes that he can uncover what happened the day his wife died.

Gossipmongers, consider yourself on notice: Eddie Cibrian is no cheater. At least when it comes to remaining faithful to his mistress. A rep for the CSI: Miami hunk says Cibrian is suing mad over a Life & Style report painting him as a serial womanizer who is now two-timing LeAnn Rimes by secretly seeing an old girlfriend. "Unfortunately Life & Style Magazine has chosen to go out with a story filled with inaccuracies and deceitful lies, presumably to titillate sales, but clearly resulting in harm to Eddie Cibrian and others. This is irresponsible and reckless journalism," the actor's manager, Steve Sauer, tells E! News. "Eddie has met with his attorneys and will be filing a suit for...

British actress Julie Andrews has thrown a planned documentary on her movie The Sound Of Music into jeopardy - for refusing to allow her image to be used in it. The two-hour show for American cable TV station A&E was set to track the lives of the seven actors who played the Von Trapp children in the hit musical. But Michael McLean, a talent manager who served as one of the casting directors on the film, says that Andrews, through her manager Steve Sauer, has refused to allow Digital Ranch, the producer of the documentary, to use her likeness, either in clips of stills from the film or extra footage. McLean says Sauer told him Andrews plans to make a 40th anniversary special of her own in 2005, tied to the movie and that the A&E documentary could seriously detract from broadcast network interest in her project.
