Among the highlights, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and skier Mikaela Shiffrin took home top honors, winning Best Athlete in men’s and women’s sports, respectively.
Naturally, the Chiefs took home Best Team, and Mahomes took home another Espy for Best NFL player, thanks to the team’s Super Bowl Lvii win earlier this year, their second in 4 years. (Mahomes also led the Chiefs to victory at the Super Bowl in 2019.)

The 2020 Espys aired on Sunday and it may have looked like a different ceremony this year, but it still delivered awards show flair, celebrating the best in sports. While handing out trophies virtually to some of the most prominent figures in sports, it served inspiration and hope.
Hosted by Wnba’s Sue Bird, Ol Reign’s Megan Rapinoe and Seattle Seahawks Qb Russell Wilson, the ceremony was virtual and kicked off with a video tribute honoring the Black men and women in sports. Wilson then addressed the deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and others which launched into Black Lives Matter movement of racial injustice that has been front and center in the past couple of weeks, but has been a battle for too long. ESPN, the sports-media giant with an influence that extends across several types of media, is getting out of one particular venue: print.
The Disney-controlled company said Tuesday that it would shut down ESPN The Magazine, an influential sports publication that has been on newsstands since 1998, in September. The publication was no longer breaking even, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The only change here is that we are moving away from printing it on paper and sending it in the mail, following September’s release of ‘The Body’ Issue,” the company said in a statement. “Our data shows the vast majority of readers already consume our print journalism on digital platforms, and this approach will maximize our reach and impact. The fourth Annual ESPN Sports Humanitarian Awards on Tuesday celebrated the positive impact sports stars have rather than just their achievements on the field, court or ice.
In a year that the #MeToo movement and female empowerment has dominated headlines, the Sports Humanitarian Awards– held at La Live’s The Novo in downtown Los Angeles — honored the likes of Laila Ali, Stephanie McMahon, Charlotte Flair and the U.S. women’s ice hockey team.
“A lot of it is about raising money for the V Foundation and celebrating people who have made an impact in their own areas so it makes sense that the Humanitarian Awards has its own night,” host Hannah Storm told TheWrap before the show. “It says that we value people who make a difference — that’s the kind of thing you might give a single award out during the Espys or might be overshadowed by sporting achievements.

Television remembered the passing and legacies of two trailblazing media figures on Sunday. Espn began the day informing its viewers that Stuart Scott, one of the most distinctive voices in sports broadcasting, had died from cancer at the age of 49. He was brainy but not pretentious, sincere but no fool, and as Daniel Fienberg notes, he deviated sharply from the...
