Daniel Kramer, a rock photographer who captured some of the most iconic Bob Dylan images of the Sixties, including the covers of Bringing It All Back Home and Highway 61 Revisited, died April 29, Rolling Stone confirmed. He was 91.
Kramer first encountered Bob Dylan when he watched him perform “The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll” on The Steve Allen Show in 1964. “The lyrics were startling to me,” he told Rolling Stone in 2016. “They were so poetic. I knew this wasn’t an ordinary event. I knew this guy was special.”

It was the fall of 1967. The Summer of Love had just drawn to a close. Teens and twentysomethings, when they weren't studying or punching the clock, were down for a revolution. They wanted to change the world, and, in the process, cheese off their parents. And there was no better way to accomplish the latter than to switch on "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour."
Dick and Tom Smothers didn't look like troublemakers, but their CBS variety show had quickly become an annoyance for the so-called "Tiffany Network." They were a hit with their target demographic, which was, ironically, the problem. Their hip young writing staff was relentlessly satirizing the increasingly uneasy state of the world, which didn't sit well with advertisers or politically conservative executives. And while it was far from provocative to book edgy musical acts, the artists appearing on the Smothers' show were getting young folks to question...

There may not be a more daunting artist from the twentieth century (and beyond) to grapple with in any form than Bob Dylan. The folk music legend is regarded by many as the most influential songwriter of the last 60-plus years, and, at the age of 82, is just as relevant today as he was in his rebellious young adulthood. He pricked the nation's conscience in the early 1960s with classic protest anthems like "The Times They Are a-Changin'," "Blowin' in the Wind" and "A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall," inspiring many a teenager and twentysomething to pick up an acoustic guitar and sing their truth. Then, in what his folkie colleagues/admirers took as a betrayal, he went electric. This would be the first of many confounding transformations. In a way, he kept throwing fans off the scent of the big "Who is Bob Dylan?" question by, every few years, getting...

Eight years before "Saturday Night Live" started stirring up trouble for NBC, "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour" was the counterculture bane of CBS' programming existence. And unlike the surprisingly game gang at 30 Rockefeller Center, the suits at the Eye (that's the nickname for CBS' logo) could not be mollified by high ratings.
The enmity between CBS and Smothers was forged by a perfect confluence of time and content. When the variety show premiered on February 5, 1967, the United States was waging two very different wars on two geographically inconvenient fronts. The country had just entered its second year of full-on, boots-on-the-ground combat in Vietnam, and though a slim majority still supported the conflict, the nation's youth weren't keen on getting drafted to fight an enemy that didn't pose an immediate physical threat to America. This unease dovetailed with the unrest at home: anti-war protests, the ongoing Civil Rights Movement, and a...

Production is now underway on “A Complete Unknown,” the coming Bob Dylan feature directed by James Mangold and starring Timothée Chalamet as the iconic American musician. Set photos from the New York City shoot have emerged online, offering a first look at the 28-year-old actor in costume.

In the first look from set, Chalamet can be seen wearing an old-looking scarf and layering up with some gloves and a thick jacket. Looks like a snowy day in New York for young Bob Dylan. Of course, he’s lugging around a guitar too.
Along with Chalamet, the cast for “A Complete Unknown” is also reported to include Elle Fanning as Sylvie Russo, Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez, Nick Offerman as Alan Lomax and Boyd Holbrook as Johnny Cash.

How does it feel to be on your own, with no direction home, a complete unknown? Timothée Chalamet knows and now we’re starting to see it as well, as the actor has been spotted in full Bob Dylan garb during the filming of A Complete Unknown.
As the images show, Chalamet is decked out in blue jeans, a green jacket, a scarf, and a hat, lugging around an acoustic guitar in an old case. This definitely puts him in the early 1960s, undoubtedly the most defining time in Bob Dylan’s life (with due respect to his Christmas album…).

Hollywood star Timothee Chalamet, who is currently basking in the success of ‘Dune: Part Two’, was spotted on the set of James Mangold’s upcoming biopic on Bob Dylan.
As the actor starts with his journey to step into the shoes of the ‘Blowing in the Wind’ singer, he looks like a spitting image of the singer, reports ‘People’ magazine.
In photos obtained by ‘People’, Chalamet can be seen dressed in a 1960s outfit while holding a worn guitar case in his hand, as he walked the city streets dressed in jeans, a green jacket, an orange scarf, a paperboy hat and had a large yellow backpack on his back.
Beside him, a retro-looking car drove by, setting the scene for the biopic, which will reportedly centre around Dylan’s controversial transition to the electric guitar in the 1960s and his road to becoming a folk music legend, as per Deadline.

Mitski recorded a new rendition of “Buffalo Replaced,” off her most recent album, The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We, for Spotify. Like the studio version, the recording features strummed acoustic guitar and Mitski’s delicate lyrics describing an open frontier and the fleeting nature of hope; it’s just a little more raw and up front, and her singing at the end takes centerstage. She also recorded a version of the folk song, “Coyote, My Little Brother,” which Pete Seeger popularized, pushing her voice heavenward in the intro...

Crys Matthews doesn’t equivocate about her music’s north star: “It’s to amplify the voices of the unheard, shed light on the unseen, and be a steadfast reminder that hope and love are the truest pathways to justice and equity. That’s me in a nutshell.”
The 43-year-old singer-songwriter has spent much of her decade-plus career holding a mirror to America’s thorniest issues. Her protest, social justice, and freedom-infused songs have prompted comparisons to historical folk music activists such as Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger. Blending the sounds of country, gospel, Americana, and folk music, Matthews boldly sings what many are reluctant to say out loud, in the open and face-to-face.

Mitski has officially released her cover of Pete Seeger’s “Coyote, My Little Brother” as part of her new contribution to the Spotify Singles series.
This past September, Mitski debuted her version of the song during an intimate show at New York City’s Town Hall. Originally written by American folk singer Peter Lafarge, “Coyote, My Little Brother” first appeared on Lafarge’s 1963 album As Long as the Grass Shall Grow before Seeger took it on for his own LP, Broadsides: Songs and Ballads, one year later.
While introducing “Coyote, My Little Brother” as the final song during her set at Town Hall, Mitski praised Seeger for his environmental work in the Hudson Valley. “Bless him,” she said, before gloomily admitting that Seeger’s efforts mostly went for naught.

Timothée Chalamet has suggested creating a “musical cinematic universe” with his friend and Dune: Part Two co-star, Austin Butler, joking that Butler’s Elvis Presley could make an appearance in his upcoming Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown.
The comments came in a new interview with the two actors by NME, in which Chalamet said that he’s been “picking Austin’s brain nonstop” to learn more about the actor’s notoriously in-depth process. For his part, Butler said “It’s just so cool to get to discuss process and talk through things. I can’t wait for that film. I wish I could be on set every day, and just watch the magic happen.”
Chalamet then jumped in, saying “I wish you were in it” to Butler. “There’s an Elvis character in the Johnny Cash biopic [Walk the Line],” he continued. “I was kinda wishing we could create a musical cinematic universe.

In 2017, I ended my marriage of almost 12 years. It wasn’t one big betrayal. No one was a villain, not really. What happened was the oppressive weight of being a wife and mother and the burden of heterosexual marriage broke me. Three years later, in 2020, I realized I wasn’t alone. That the cultural weight of society keeps slipping onto the shoulders of mothers and wives. We are breaking. Many fans interpret The Beatles’ “All You Need Is Love” and “Can’t Buy Me Love” as anti-materialistic songs. John’s “Imagine” goes even further, painting a world without possessions as a utopian ideal. To this day, the song spurs controversy for drawing influence from Marxist rhetoric. “Working Class Hero” also mimics Marxism. Despite this, The Beatles were as commercialized as humanly possible, inspiring a cartoon series, several films, merchandise, and more.

A scheduling problem knocks Benedict Cumberbatch out of A Complete Unknown – with Edward Norton stepping in instead.
James Mangold is coming off the back of Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny, and has signed up to direct a future Star Wars movie as well. But slotted between the two is a project he’s been interested in for some time: a biopic of Bob Dylan, that he’s looking to press ahead with this year.
Timothee Chalamet – still riding high off the back in the title role of Wonka – has been cast in the role of Bob Dylan, and he’s still on board the movie. But one person who’s made an exit before filming has begun is Benedict Cumberbatch.

I was 10 when I fell in love with Tommy Smothers, who succumbed to cancer on Tuesday at 86. He was my first television hero. He was funny, he was gentle, he was quietly outrageous. And for a pre-teen kid in the 1960s, he was everything I thought a grown-up should be.
Let me back up for a second to note that I was raised in a houseful of liberals bordering on radicals. My parents and siblings were all proudly antiwar when it came to Vietnam. My older sister was the kind who went to love-ins and hung with the hippies, possibly because she was a hippie herself. My mother would bake pot brownies that my sister took to the love-in. Me? I was too young to do much more than get taken along for the ride, but it was made abundantly clear that if I wanted to be a Richmond, I...

Tom Smothers, who with his younger brother Dick changed the face of comedy with their musical humor and The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, died Tuesday in Santa Rosa, California, following a cancer battle. The news was announced by the National Comedy Center, on behalf of Smothers’ family. He was 86.
Tom and Dick Smothers started out as folk musicians in the early ’60s, and soon discovered that, while they were not good enough to be professional musicians, the act worked if they mixed in comedy.
Dick Smothers said in a statement, “Tom was not only the loving older brother that everyone would want in their life, he was a one-of-a-kind creative partner. I am forever grateful to have spent a lifetime together with him, on and off stage, for over 60 years. Our relationship was like a good marriage – the longer we were together, the more we loved and respected one another.

Tom Smothers, the countercultural comedy icon admired for the 1960s variety program he created and hosted with his younger brother, Dick, and for the tenacity he displayed in frequent clashes with CBS censors, has died. He was 86.
Smothers died Tuesday at his home in Santa Rosa, California, after a battle with cancer, his brother announced in a statement shared with The Hollywood Reporter by the National Comedy Center.

Many classic musicians have been working since the early 1960s, but they often have little in the way of a retirement plan. Fans who have been following their favorite bands for decades can still expect to buy tickets to upcoming shows. Here are six classic musicians who have already announced that they have no plans to retire.
Dolly Parton
Dolly Parton has been performing since she was a child and has no plans to slow down.
“I would never retire,” she said on Greatest Hits Radio Thursday (via USA Today). “I’ll just hopefully drop dead in the middle of a song on stage someday, hopefully one I’ve written.”

The Beatles and The Rolling Stones were two of the biggest bands of the 1960s, and they influenced many of the musicians who came after them, including David Crosby. Crosby, who began his own music career just as both bands were reaching heightened levels of success, was a fan of both. Still, he thought The Beatles were the better band. Crosby discussed something he thought The Beatles did well but The Rolling Stones couldn’t quite pull off.
David Crosby said The Beatles could pull something off that The Rolling Stones couldn’t
While doing a Q&a with Rolling Stone, Crosby was asked to name, once and for all, the better band: The Beatles or the Stones. He didn’t hesitate in his answer.
“Beatles,” he said. “Mainly because of the range of stuff that they did. The Stones did have a fairly wide range that they did, but...

Bob Dylan is lending his personal touch to James Mangold’s upcoming film about the timeless music icon.
Made clear not to be called a biopic, Mangold recently appeared on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast to discuss how his film “A Complete Unknown”, which stars “Dune” actor Timotheé Chalamet as the influential musician, focuses more on a “specific moment” in the legendary singer-songwriter’s life in the 1960s folk scene in New York City.

It’s always hard to trust that a biopic will do its subject justice, but in the case of James Mangold’s upcoming film about Bob Dylan, it looks like we’re in good hands. Mangold told IndieWire that the iconic singer-songwriter gave the director notes for his script for A Complete Unknown, starring Timothée Chalamet as Dylan.
“I’ve spent several, wonderfully charming, days in his company, just one-on-one, talking to him,” Mangold said of Dylan. “I have a script that’s personally annotated by him and treasured by me. He loves movies. The first time I sat down with Bob, one of the first things he said to me was, ‘I love Cop Land’ [Mangold’s 1997 feature].”
It’s also assuring that A Complete Unknown will only depict a few years in Dylan’s life, rather than trying to cram his full story into a two-hour movie. According to Mangold, “It...

Timothée Chalamet’s Bob Dylan movie, “A Complete Unknown,” is supposed to kick off filming in August, but don’t call it a Bob Dylan biopic. During a recent appearance on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast (via IndieWire), the film’s director, James Mangold, said “A Complete Unknown” is “not really a Bob Dylan biopic” but a movie about “a very specific moment” in the 1960s folk scene of New York City. The film’s specificity is one reason the real Bob Dylan “has been so supportive of us making it,” the filmmaker reasoned.

Bob Dylan made his comments known for upcoming film “A Complete Unknown.”

James Mangold's Bob Dylan movie has found its Pete Seeger: "Power of the Dog" star Benedict Cumberbatch is set to play the late folk legend in "A Complete Unknown," according to Deadline (via Rolling Stone). Mangold revealed the casting decision at the Cannes Film Festival this weekend, where his latest movie, "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny," just premiered.
If you'd forgotten Mangold was making a Dylan movie, that might be because the first casting news came back in early 2020, when the film was titled "Going Electric." Timothée Chalamet is set to play the soulful musical star at a young age, with Mangold directing and Jay Cocks ("Gangs of New York") penning the script. Chalamet is also set to provide vocals for the performance, which isn't always a sure bet in musical biopics these days -- but he'll be showing off his pipes in "Wonka" first.

It was a great night for Disney as Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny had a smash debut in its world premiere Thursday evening at the Cannes Film Festival. The June 30 release received a warm five-minute standing ovation, especially for Harrison Ford in his swan song in the title role he started playing 40-plus years ago.

All this came on...
