The American Cinema Editors (Ace) has announced its new board. Current president Kevin Tent will serve another two-year term.
Lillian Benson will continue to serve alongside him as will vice president Sabrina Plisco and treasurer Andrew Seklir. Former associate board members Dana Glauberman and Nancy Richardson have been bumped up to the board, replacing outgoing members Anita Brandt-Burgoyne and Michael Ornstein.
“On behalf of American Cinema Editors, we are proud to welcome our newly elected Board Members to the Ace leadership team,” stated Tent.
Tent is best known for his collaboration with filmmaker Alexander Payne. They first worked together on the 1996 film “Citizen Ruth.” He was elected to the board in 2020 and was nominated for both an Ace Eddie and an Academy Award for editing Payne’s film “The Descendants,” starring George Clooney. [The following story contains spoilers for Better Call Saul and Westworld.]
After 64 episodes of television, a feature film and a statue dedication, Aaron Paul has closed the book on Jesse Pinkman.
The Breaking Bad and El Camino star has decided that his two recent appearances on Better Call Saul are the perfect way to bid adieu to the character he’s played since Bad’s pilot shoot in 2007. Paul’s decision makes even more sense on the heels of Albuquerque’s unveiling of two bronze statues that commemorate Walter White and Jesse Pinkman, two fictional characters who turned New Mexico’s largest city into a tourist destination for fans around the world.
“[Jesse Pinkman] will always have a special place inside of me, but I can confidently say that [Better Call Saul] was the last time we’re going to see Pinkman. So it was a nice farewell,” Paul tells The Hollywood Reporter.

Westworld Season 4 Episode 6
Anyone who has ever played video games can empathize with Caleb (Aaron Paul) during “Fidelity,” the sixth episode of the fourth season of Westworld. I was never the kind of person who could sit and do a speed-run of any game, probably because I didn’t have the hand-eye coordination necessary to succeed, and I tend to like to explore games rather than just going from point A to point B as quickly as possible. Give me side quests. Give me Easter eggs. Give me time-sucking distractions. Granted, I’m generally not playing video games in an effort to stay alive, but my video game method looks very similar to the way Caleb slowly builds his way to an attempted escape from Charlotte Hale’s secret facility in Delos’s Manhattan headquarters.
This isn’t Caleb’s first escape attempt, and with every attempted escape,...

When aliens and imaginary worlds come into play, it falls on editors to create a pace and tempo that helps us believe they’re real. Sometimes this means holding on an actor’s reaction to visual effects that they haven’t even seen yet; other times it can mean showing us just enough of the invented world to make us yearn for more.
Such shows as Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale,” Netflix’s “Stranger Things” and HBO’s “Westworld” all take us to highly stylized environments, and their editors have found ways to bring the audience into those places by carefully introducing us to their surroundings.
Editor Wendy Hallam Martin is keenly aware that “The Handmaid’s Tale” has resonance for many in the current cultural climate and also wants to pay her respects to the original text.

“Dunkirk,” Christopher Nolan’s trippy, clock-ticking experiment in pure cinema, “I, Tonya,” the black comedy about notorious figure skater Tonya Harding (Oscar nominee Margo Robbie), and “Coco,” Pixar’s ode to Día de los Muertos, took top editing honors in drama, comedy, and animation respectively at the 68th Ace Eddie Awards Friday at the Beverly Hilton.
Ace is a great Oscar predictor for editing (23 out of the last 27 years ), which now makes “Dunkirk” the favorite for editor Lee Smith. It beat Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water,” the Best Picture Oscar frontrunner, edited by Sidney Wolinsky. And, surprisingly, for comedy, “I Tonya” (Tatiana Riegel) triumphed over “Baby Driver” (Jonathan Amos & Paul Machliss) and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” (Jon Gregory). These are the five Oscar nominees for Best Film Editing. However, as a Best Picture predictor, Ace hasn’t fared as well, picking the winner 16 out of the last 27 years.

For the past five seasons, the Best Drama editing winner has gone on to win the Best Drama prize as well. So if you want a potential barometer for this year’s big prize, the three crucial editing nominees are “Stranger Things,” “Westworld,” and “Better Call Saul.”
This doesn’t mean that “The Crown” or “The Handmaid’s Tale” won’t win Best Drama, but it’s noteworthy that they weren’t among the editing nominees. Neither were “House of Cards” or “This Is Us,” the other Best Drama nominees, as “Stranger Things” and “Better Call Saul” each got nominated for two episodes.
However, while “Better Call Saul” significantly saw Jimmy (nominated Bob Odenkirk) getting more Saul-like from “Breaking Bad,” it’s very much the dark horse. The real smackdown is between the dueling sci-fi newcomers, “Stranger Things” and “Westworld.” Both have their advantages (the Upside Down versus the robot...

What the heck is Nibbler? The opening scene of Man Vs. Snake: The Long and Twisted Tale of Nibbler, a new documentary by Andy Seklir and Tim Kinzy, asks that question, which is pertinent because the movie is about several men and their attempts to score more than a billion points on the arcade game Nibbler. When initially achieved in 1984 by Timothy McVey ("not the terrorist," as everyone is quick to point out), it was the first time that any arcade game player had exceeded the magical 'one billion point' mark on any game. Of course, not every machine in the golden age of video gaming tracked points that high, which highlights the foolhardiness of the endeavor; it was not a universal standard for...

Over the past eight years we’ve seen quite a number of remarkable documentaries about video game culture including Seth Gordon’s engrossing documentary about the quest for a Donkey Kong record and the feature-length Free to Play that follows three professional gamers from around the world as they compete for a million dollar prize in the first Dota 2 International Tournament. If you’re like me and you love video games and documentary filmmaking equally, you’re going to take an interest in Man Vs. Snake: The Long Twisted Tale of Nibbler. It tells the outrageous and inspirational true story of one man’s quest for the highest video game score ever recorded: In 1984, 16 year-old Timothy McVey walked into the legendary Twin Galaxies arcade in Ottumwa Iowa; and 44 ½ hours later he walked away with the highest score in video game history – on a single quarter. The film, directed by Tim Kinzy and Andrew Seklir,...

It is time for me to make my peace with the fact that I will not be at Fantastic Fest this year. Last year's fest was one of my favorites ever, fitting for a tenth anniversary, and I would love to go this year. It's just not in the cards, though. It guts me, too. The event continues to grow and change and evolve, and it features one of the greatest programming teams in the business right now. There are films playing at the festival that I'll see in Toronto, and I'm sure I'll catch up with others, but that's not the point. Fantastic Fest is an experience, and an amazing one. If you want to go, you still can. "Daytime Only Badges, Fan Badges, and 2Nd Half Badges for Fantastic Fest 2015 are available for purchase here," today's press release urged. If you can go for the second half, you'll...

One of the greatest genre film festivals in the world (some say the best) has just announced its second wave of titles, including a few titles so anticipated you’ll wish you’re in Austin next month. Below are 35 more films to add to the 23 already announced in the first wave. They include Ridley Scott’s The Martian, Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Lobster, Ben Wheatley’s adaptation of J.G. Ballard’s High-Rise and Jeremy Saulnier’s follow up to Blue Ruin, The Green Room. In addition to the films, Fantastic Fest is also delivering something special this year with a performance from Itchy-o – “a blazing, 32-member aural assault from the darkest depths of Colorado.” Fantastic Fest will also host the World Premiere of Lazer Team, the first feature film from web series gods Rooster Teeth. “This is a big year for genre cinema. We’re exceptionally proud to honor incredible filmmakers...

It’s hard to believe that we are a month away from what is possibly the best genre film festival in North America! After announcing a Kurt Russell included first wave, we get a wave that probably includes all the films I have the most interest in. The French remake of what I consider is one of Mario Bava’s best films, Rabid Dogs is included. Along with Jeremy Saulnier’s follow up from Blue Ruin, Green Room where Patrick Stewart plays a Neo-Nazi club owner, Ridley Scott’s The Martian, Ben Wheatley’s adaptation of High-Rise and the horror film that has some chilling buzz, The Witch, are all included. Check out the full listing below and wait with anticipation for our coverage of the festival!

Do we need another documentary involving an arcade game rivalry from the 1980s? Yes, especially if it actually ends up being better than The King of Kong. That way, we can forget that Seth Gordon ever got our hopes up about his career. Also, the competitive nature of a later, potentially greater film of this kind fits perfectly with the subject matter. This new project is called Man vs. Snake: The Long and Twisted Tale of Nibbler, and I’ve been told directly that it began before anyone had heard about Kong. That means it’s been in the works for at least six or seven years*. Which makes sense, because directors Andrew Seklir and Tim Kinzy were still working as editors on Battlestar Galactica when they first discovered the game Nibbler. What is Nibbler, you ask? Yeah, I didn’t know either. And according to the Man vs. Snake trailer, not...

Here are a few geeky crowdfunding projects for your consideration, including a videogame documentary and a survival horror adventure...
If you were a documentary maker, and you went to a major television network, would they necessarily give you the money to make a quirky film about a largely forgotten videogame? Would a major publishing company give you the cash to make an off-the-wall horror game where you fight off monsters using mobile phone apps? The answer in both cases is: probably not.
That's the great thing about crowdfunding, and something we're reminded of every week - it gives everyone a chance to make what they'd like to make, all supported by the people who want to see it. This week's selection includes those examples listed above, plus a worthy cause involving a replica Tardis, and a stop-motion animation from a highly talented artist.

Despite being nominated for Best Drama and having its star Anna Paquin win Best Actress in a TV Drama at this year's Golden Globes, "True Blood" was shut out of the major categories for the 2009 Emmy Awards, which announced its nominees earlier today. But that's not to say it, and a few other genre-related shows, won't be showing up at the party.
Here's a list of the horror-tinged shows that were recognized (with a few others whose fanbase includes a lot of our readers thrown in for good measure):
Outstanding Art Direction For A Single-Camera Series
Bones • The Hero In The Hold • Fox • 20th Century Fox Television
Michael Mayer, Production Designer
Gregory S. Richman, Art Director
Kimberly Wannop, Set Decorator
Heroes • Cold Snap • NBC • Universal Media Studios in association with Tailwind Productions
Ruth Ammon, Production Designer
Sandy Getzler, Art Director
Ron Franco, Set Decorator

It's a good day for funny people, especially if your name is Tina Fey or Seth MacFarlane.
Fey's series, 30 Rock, was handed 22 Emmy nominations this morning, which stands as a record for a comedy series. She and Alec Baldwin were also nominated for acting awards. Plus, for the first time some of the other actors on NBC's laffer were recognized. Jane Krakowski, Jack McBrayer and Tracy Morgan all picked up supporting nominations.
MacFarlane's Family Guy was also nominated for best comedy series, the first time an animated show has cracked that category since The Flintstones in 1961. Two years ago MacFarlane decided to pull his show from contention in the animated series category to have it considered for best comedy.
Mad Men, the drama about the advertising world in the sixties, picked up 16 nominations in the drama categories, including a best actor nod for Jon Hamm. Hamm is also nominated as...
