Rituraj Singh, who passed away at the age of 59 in the wee hours of Tuesday, was a member of Tag, the same Delhi theatre group as Bollywood Badshah Shah Rukh Khan. The two used to rehearse together and play football. And they acted together in Shah Rukh Khan’s debut film ‘In Which Annie Gives It Those Ones’.

"Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" is the most contentious of the first three "Indiana Jones" movies. Director Steven Spielberg's filmmaking instincts are sharp as ever, as is Harrison Ford's charisma, and even before the mine tunnel sequence, the film moves like a roller coaster in the best way possible.
But in aping early 20th-century pulp, the film inherits their exoticized distortions of non-American cultures. "Temple of Doom" is mostly set in British-occupied India, but the villains are not these colonizers. No, Indy and co. face off against an indigenous threat: the vicious Thuggee cult that enslaves children and makes human sacrifices to the Hindu god Kali. I'm admittedly not an expert on Indian culture (nor were the writers of the movie), so I'll defer to one who is; Indian-Canadian writer Saffron Maeve has taken the film to task over at Little White Lies. Otherwise, I'll let...

Steven Spielberg's 1984 blockbuster "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" is not a good movie. The pacing is strange, the central story is introduced rather late into the film, and the interior logic doesn't really stand up to scrutiny. Many also take issue with Willie Scott (Kate Capshaw) as she constantly whines. Also what is the true nature of the Sankara stones, and why is it bad that Mola Ram (Amrish Puri) has them? It seems that Mola Ram and Chattar Lal (Roshan Seth) are quite evil enough merely enslaving hundreds of children to work in their mines.
"Temple of Doom" is also the bloodiest and scariest of the "Indiana Jones" movies, a quality that both Spielberg and story writer/producer George Lucas have said was inspired by their respective messy breakups at the time. While many find the movie's gore to be fun and zesty -- including this...

Eight minutes into Temple Of Doom, Indiana Jones kills someone by hurling a flaming kebab into his chest. As far as I’m aware, we hadn’t seen such a thing on screen before. Or in real life. It’s outrageous really, an insane thing to do, and to see. But all of Temple Of Doom is loopy. With Raiders Of The Lost Ark, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas had made a genuinely classic film, got heaps of acclaim, and now here they were with a follow-up for which they, well, went mad. To which I say: Thank you.
Temple Of Doom is pulpier, funnier, sillier, scarier than Raiders. Each Indy outing is tonally different from the last; this one actually becomes a whole other film halfway through, switching unapologetically from knockabout farce to traumatic nightmare. And for all its faults – which, for all the film’s greatness, are admittedly plentiful – it is,...

With less than a week left for the opening in Doha, Qatar, of the Mira Nair-helmed musical, ‘Monsoon Wedding’, based on her iconic 2001 film, members of the cast and crew are taking to their Instagram handles to share pictures of themselves shot by Ishaan Nair (who also had a role in the film) and sharing their excitement to be a part of the FIFA World Cup fever.
The musical, its score written by acclaimed composer-director Vishal Bharadwaj, will open at the Abdul Aziz Nasser Theatre in Doha on November 15.
Namit Das, who was most recently seeing playing the shoe company executive Haresh Khanna in BBC television drama mini-series ‘The Suitable Boy’ (also directed by Mira Nair), shared the cast’s sense of anticipation when he wrote: “The countdown has begun for this ‘Monsoon Wedding’ to shower Doha, Qatar, with a dose of entertainment.”

After being lost in the tendrils of rights issues for many years, Mira Nair’s 1991 masterpiece Mississippi Masala is finally being brought back to audiences with a gorgeous new 4K restoration from Janus Films. Premiering the restoration at the 2021 New York Film Festival, there’s been a euphoria surrounding this re-release in a way that’s difficult to describe. Many resurrections of lost films each year develop a fervent passion from the film-loving community, but there’s something special about what’s happening with Mississippi Masala.
Maybe it has to do with how specifically beautiful the film is. Developed with her longtime creative partner, writer Sooni Taraporevala, it’s a story of love between Mina, a brown woman, and Demetrius (Denzel Washington), a Black man, in Greenwood, Mississippi. It’s also a story of pain, as Mina has ended up in Mississippi due to the exile of Ugandan Indians that...

"We're just friends." "Did I say any different?" Janus Films has revealed an official trailer for Mississippi Masala, an early 90s romantic drama from filmmaker Mira Nair - her second film at the time. She later went on to make Monsoon Wedding and The Namesake, but before those she made this starring Denzel Washinton and Sarita Choudhury. The film first premiered in 1991, and opened in US theaters in early 1992. This 4K digital restoration was commissioned by the Criterion Collection and supervised by director Mira Nair and cinematographer Edward Lachman. The film is about an ethnic Indian family that's expelled from Idi Amin's Uganda in 1972 and now lives in Mississippi 17 years later. The dad sues Uganda to get his property back, while the grown daughter falls in love with a Black man - played by Denzel. It also stars Roshan Seth, Sharmila Tagore, Charles S. Dutton, Joe Seneca, & Ranjit Chowdhry.

The show would look to shoot in India from early June through November.
First published by Canada’s McLelland and Stewart in 1995, “A Fine Balance” went on to win the 1995 Giller Prize and was shortlisted for the 1996 Booker Prize.

The concept of the conservative, Indian father who has moved from India to the West but cannot seem to adjust or even let his offspring adjust to this “foreign” society has been a recurring one for cinema, with “Bend it Like Beckham” being the first that come to mind. Nisha Ganatra uses this concept as her base, but her narrative moves towards different directions, as this time the focus is the aforementioned father and not his children.

New Delhi, Nov 24 (Ians) At the moment, Richie Mehta is basking in the glory coming his way, after scooping up the first International Emmy for India with his web series, Delhi Crime. The win is all the more special for the Canadian filmmaker of Indian origin because the series marked his debut on the digital platform.
Mehta, who has tried his hand at short and feature filmmaking, as well as the documentary format, says the win comes in sync with his plan to narrate stories that have a global outlook.
His first feature film "Amal" released in 2007. Set in modernday New Delhi, the film narrates the story of a poor autorickshaw driver named Amal Kumar. The film stars Naseeruddin Shah, Roshan Seth, and Seema Biswas, and won over 30 international awards, and was nominated for six Genie Awards including Best Picture, Director, and Adapted Screenplay. We had planned to visit family in India this summer, but instead I'm adding my notes to these travel tips for friends. And each Sunday night, I'm watching Beecham House, which premiered last month on PBS Masterpiece for Us audiences.
Set in India, Beecham House's six episodes narrate a fact-based fiction of an Englishman living in Delhi in the late 19th century. His household includes a baby, Indians, and some British family, with interactions with Muslim neighbors, British and French troops, and the Mughals. It is written, produced, and directed by Gurinder Chadha, whose films like Blinded by the Light have astutely championed the nuances of Indian culture, featuring familial care, domesticity, coming of age, marriage, parenthood, or larger issues like racial discrimination, prejudice, and even ethnic violence. Beecham House attempts a monumental task: creating a glimpse into the complex power struggles among capitalist empires that plundered colonial India...

Almost 19 years after working together in Monsoon Wedding, filmmaker Mira Nair has found a "suitable boy" in acclaimed actor Randeep Hooda for a new web series that she is working on. According to a source in the know, Randeep will be a part of Nair's eight-episode adaptation of Vikram Seth's "A Suitable Boy".
"Yes, it's true I am working with Mira after almost 19 years and looking forward to it. It's a bit early to speak more about the series or my role," Randeep told Ians.
The actor and the New York-based filmmaker had last put their creative forces together for the 2001 film Monsoon Wedding, which depicted romantic involvements during a traditional Punjabi Hindu wedding in Delhi.
The adaptation of "A Suitable Boy", one of the longest novels ever published, was first announced by BBC in 2017 as the first period drama by the production to feature an entirely non white cast.

Dumbo is the live-action remake of the much beloved 1941 Walt Disney film of the same name. This updated 2019 rendition is directed by famed auteur Tim Burton. Who, somewhat ironically, first established that this live-action trend by Disney could be a colossal success with his 2010 remake of Alice in Wonderland. That resulted in a monstrous ride at the box office grossing over a billion dollars. Burton progressed onto his usual mediocre cruise control with multiple box office flops and critical messes in the likes of Dark Shadows, Frankenweenie, Big Eyes and Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. All undoubtedly pieces of Burton’s identifiable aesthetic but lacking the emotional flair he once had in his 80s and 90s heyday.

If you prefer Burton’s big visionary swings into darkness (Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Batman, Ed Wood, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Sweeney Todd), the family-friendly Dumbo will require adjustment to the PG light. Dumbo, the baby elephant who can use his weirdly big ears to fly, still occupies the center ring in Burton’s extravagant new circus. But screenwriter Ehren Kruger, infamous for three of the five Transformers films, has transformed the plot to include a mixed bag of human characters.

The recent spate of Disney remakes has been somewhat of a mixed bag. Lately, efforts like Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, and The Jungle Book have fared better than Alice in Wonderland, for example. Now, we have Dumbo to add to the fold. Optimism may not have been too high for this one, especially with Tim Burton returning to the Disney family. However, this movie is rather charming and really entertaining. It runs almost an hour longer than the animated original, but up until the third act, really does manage not to feel overstuffed. Could the flick have lost ten minutes somewhere? Sure. Does it keep it from being a good film? Absolutely not. It’s not a classic like the original, but it deserves all the money it’s likely to make this week. The film is a live action adaptation of the Disney animated classic about a baby elephant with giant ears.

Netflix movies may still be question mark in terms of being allowed in competition at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival in May, but the streaming giant will be present at Cannes Series. The Cannes television festival will mark its second year next month with Netflix going up against rival Amazon in the competition section. The full lineup includes series from Israel, Norway, Spain, and Belgium.
Netflix’s competition entry is the German series “How to Sell Drugs Online Fast,” from writers Philipp Käßbohrer and Matthias Murmann. Amazon is heading to Cannes Series with “The Feed,” a London-set drama created by Channing Powell and based on the novel Nick Clark Windo. “The Feed” stars “Game of Thrones” favorite Michelle Fairley opposite David Thewlis in a story about a piece of technology that allows people to instantly share thoughts and emotions. The tech falls into the wrong hands and becomes a murderous weapon.

City of Tiny Lights (Pete Travis)
Small-time private detective Tommy Akhtar (Riz Ahmed) has all the swagger of a hard-boiled snoop: leather jacket on his shoulders and cigarette in his mouth, leaning against London architecture in the darkened night. His office resides above some shops, he makes friendly with local convenience store owner Mrs. Elbaz (Myriam Acharki), and asks new clients where they found him because he’s not advertising in the paper.

Here's Your First Look at Dumbo in Tim Burton's Live-Action Adaptation with Casting and Plot Details
It was announced at Disney's D23 Expo that Tim Burton had started production on his live action adaptation of Dumbo. They also confirmed the cast, offered some story details, and even brought out a life-size prop of Dumbo to show off, which you can see above! He looks so freakin' adorable! The ears on the prop were floppy and everything! I love the character design. It's completely in line with the original design of the animated version, especially in the eyes.
In case you're wondering who will star in the film, they've got Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito, and Eva Green, who have all previously worked with Burton. Stars: Riz Ahmed, Billie Piper, James Floyd, Roshan Seth, Cush Jumbo | Written by Patrick Neate | Directed by Pete Travis
I could watch Riz Ahmed in almost anything, but there are limits, tested here by this deeply mediocre British mystery thriller. "People call me a snoop. They call me a lot worse. Broken marriages, missing kids. Nothing major, just the sacred and profane." An official UK trailer has arrived online for an indie film titled City of Tiny Lights, a "Scorsese-like" crime thriller about a private eye in London. Riz Ahmed (seen in Rogue One and Jason Bourne) plays Tommy Akhtar, who takes on a seemingly straight-forward missing person's case only to get pulled deeper into the underbelly of modern London. The full cast includes Billie Piper, Cush Jumbo, Hannah Rae, Roshan Seth, and James Floyd. This is from the same director of Dredd, a movie which I was very fond of. The film played at the Toronto and London Film Festivals last year, and it looks pretty damn good. Plus, Riz Ahmed is awesome and it's great to see him in a strong lead role. Take a look below. Here's...

Riz Ahmed first made waves in Michael Winterbottom’s “The Road to Guantanamo,” but his Hollywood claim to fame was in last year’s HBO crime drama “The Night Of,” which earned him a Golden Globe and SAG nomination.
Now, after starring in “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” Ahmed is returning to theaters in “City of Tiny Lights,” directed by “Dredd” helmer Pete Travis. Set in West London, the story is co-written by Patrick Neate and is based on his novel of the same name. Described as a “unique portrait of contemporary London as a teeming multicultural metropolis where nothing is as it seems,” it follows the actor as Tommy Akhtar, a London detective who goes searching for a missing girl after a high-class prostitute seeks his help.
The modern noir also co-stars “Penny Dreadful” actress Billie Piper as Shelley, Tommy’s long-lost love, as well as Cush Jumbo and Roshan Seth.

After a major last year with The Night Of, Rogue One, and Jason Bourne this year, Riz Ahmed also brought a few films to Tiff. One of them was City of Tiny Lights, which comes from Dredd‘s Pete Travis, and follows Ahmed as a London detective who gets entangled in a missing-girl case as a complex web of lies bubble up. With the film picked up for U.K. distribution this April, the first neon-soaked trailer has now arrived.
We said in our review, “Ahmed shines in the lead role: something this charismatic actor has deserved since the wonderfully funny Four Lions. He embodies the hard-edged street-wise detective well without erasing the sense of empathy his characters always possess. We see the struggle endured between those worlds and know how Shelley’s leaving widened the void in his soul that Stuart’s death tore open. People like him from Mrs.

City of Tiny Lights is a noir inspired London thriller directed by Pete Travis, based on the novel by Patrick Neate which stars Riz Ahmed (currently to be seen on Netflix starring in the much-acclaimed The Night of), Cush Jumbo, and Billie Piper.
As the film moves through present day multicultural London, it also cuts back to Tommy's youth in 1997, telling the story of his friendship with a lad called Lovely (Antonio Aakeel), his mate Stuart (George Sargeant) and his growing love for Stuart's girlfriend, Shelley (Hannah Rae).
The filmmakers spent almost five months searching for the youngsters, cast by Celestia Fox. Beyond conventional casting methods they trawled youth clubs, theatre's and schools in search for the perfect young ensemble.
Playing the younger Riz Ahmed is newcomer Reiss Kershi-Hussain (represented by Shepherd Management) who had no previous acting experience before being cast as the impressionable young Tommy.

But while he’s good at his work and enjoys the struggle if only to get out of his father’s (Roshan Seth‘s Farzad) house when the old man starts using cricket metaphors to explain life, Tommy has yet to completely run away from his past. It is the “googly ball” of his life, a blind spot that’s never been more apparent until now.

If you didn’t see his break-out role in one of the century’s best comedies, Four Lions, then we imagine Riz Ahmed first landed on your radar as the doomed assistant to Jake Gyllenhaal in Nightcrawler. Along with his high-profile performances in The Night Of, Rogue One, and Jason Bourne this year, one of the two Tiff films he has is the starring vehicle City of Tiny Lights, as noted in our fall festival preview.
Directed by Dredd‘s Pete Travis, it follows Ahmed as a London detective who gets entangled in a missing-girl case as a complex web of lies bubble up. We now have the first clip thanks to THR, which shows Ahmed on the case as he visits his ex-girlfriend at a local bar. Check out the clip below for the film also starring Cush Jumbo, James Floyd, Billie Piper, and Roshan Seth.

An hour into Mahesh Pailoor’s genial drama about a widowed academic and his architect son you just know everything’s going to be fine
This genial, La-set indie contrives a reunion between widowed professor Roshan Seth and his self-absorbed architect son Sendhil Ramamurthy, connected only by the mess they’ve made of their personal lives. Unlike much recent “silver screen” fodder, Mahesh Pailoor’s film is appreciably relaxed around matters of age and race, yet – as a missing-cat subplot suggests – it’s somewhat underpowered.

Gwyneth Paltrow silver dress on the Oscars' Red Carpet Gwyneth Paltrow at the Academy Awards Donning a shining silver dress, Gwyneth Paltrow arrives at the 2011 Academy Awards held on Feb. 27 at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. Paltrow's latest movie, Country Strong, was up for a Best Song Oscar. It lost to the Toy Story 3 ditty "We Belong Together," by Randy Newman. More than a decade ago, Gwyneth Paltrow took home the Best Actress Oscar for John Madden's Shakespeare in Love (1998), a romantic comedy-drama also featuring Joseph Fiennes (as William Shakespeare), Judi Dench, Geoffrey Rush, and this year's Best Actor Oscar winner, Colin Firth (The King's Speech). Paltrow's (moderately) gender-bending Shakespeare in Love heroine remains her only Oscar-nominated performance to date. Directed by Shana Feste, Country Strong fared decently at the U.S. box office, but not as well as some had expected. Besides Gwyneth Paltrow, the cast includes...

Noir isn’t just a genre limited to the mean streets across the pond; there have been plenty of examples set here in Blighty. A new one is set to start shooting next week, with City Of Tiny Lights boasting Billie Piper, Riz Ahmed, Cush Jumbo, James Floyd and Roshan Seth. Adapted by Patrick Neale from his own book, the film will unspool the tale of down at heel investigator Tommy Akhtar (Ahmed), a deadbeat detective still pining over his lost love (Piper). Drowning his sorrows in booze and hoping to smoke away his cares, he’s sparked back into work mode by prostitute Melody (Jumbo), who wants him to track down her friend and flatmate Natasha. Turns out she went to meet a new client at a posh Mayfair bar and never returned. But while Tommy doesn’t have much luck tracking down Natasha, he does stumble upon the...
