Exclusive: Juno Films has picked up North American rights to Hilma — the latest film written and directed by three-time Academy Award nominee Lasse Hallström (What’s Eating Gilbert Grape), which is poised to make its North American premiere at the Palm Springs Film Festival.
The cinematic portrait of the Swedish artist and feminist pioneer Hilma af Klint — who’s played at different ages by Tora Hallström and Oscar nominee Lena Olin — will premiere theatrically at the Quad Cinema in NYC on April 14 before expanding nationwide.

LevelK has boarded Icelandic crime drama “Cold,” directed by Erlingur Óttar Thoroddsen and based on the bestselling book “The Undesired” (“Kuldi”) by Yrsa Sigurdardóttir. Still in production, it was recently pitched at Venice Gap-Financing Market.
The story centers on Óðinn, living alone with his daughter Rún. As he investigates decades-old deaths at a juvenile treatment center, he begins to suspect that the sinister secrets are connected to his ex-wife’s mysterious suicide. As well as his daughter’s strange behavior.
“Erlingur is an established, talented director who respects the audiences and finds it fascinating to thrill them,” says LevelK’s CEO Tine Klint.
“We were captured by his take on the book, his style and the entire team behind the production.”
Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, Sara Dögg Ásgeirsdóttir and “Woman at War” lead Halldóra Geirharðsdóttir are all set to star.
“On the surface, ‘Cold’ certainly seems like a classic Nordic noir.

Tom Wlaschiha and Jazzy de Lisser (“Game of Thrones”) have joined the cast of Viaplay’s major English-language original feature “Hilma.” The film is written and directed by Lasse Hallström, the Oscar-nominated director of “The Cider House Rules” and “My Life as a Dog.”
The biopic, which explores the life of revolutionary Swedish artist and feminist pioneer Hilma af Klint, will bow this fall in theaters and on Viaplay, Scandinavia’s leading streaming service.

Celluloid Dreams handles Valley of Shadows; Media Luna boards Little Wing; Indie Sales represents The Giant.
The old adage of ‘leaving them wanting more’ was certainly on display at the Works In Progress pitches at Goteborg’s Nordic Film Market this year (full line-up below).
The most-anticipated pitch of the session was Johannes Nyholm’s feature debut The Giant. The director showed several scenes from the film, but refrained from showing footage of the fantastical Giant as he said the VFX was still being worked on.
Also holding back were the producers of Cold Case Hammarskjold, the latest provocative documentary from Mads Brugger (of The Ambassador and The Red Chapel fame), about the death of Swedish diplomat and author Dag Hammarskjold.

We can still feel the heat generated from Craig Zobel’s Compliance. His sophomore film, which was made on a dime (his directorial debut Great World of Sound was made for a nickel and was also showcased at Sundance), got under the skin of select imbecile auds at its Park City premiere, but in the same token it intellectually tickled the critical masses. Adept in human discord in its purest form, this quality surely got infused on his third directing outing, Z for Zachariah, which is large scale humanity in crisis. You don’t often see Blacklist scripts (ranked #26th in 2009) break into Sundance, but in a Take Shelter scheme of things, this shot in New Zealand production benefitting from a plethora of producers on board could fit a sci-fi mold of Duncan Jones’ Moon. Despite the presence of A listers such as Chris Pine and Chiwetel Ejiofor, conceivably, big...

This is finally happening, and I can’t wait. It has been a really long time since I have seen Lord of Illusions. Fresh off of the Director’s Cut of Nightbreed, I could definitely use some more remastered Clive Barker films in my life. Scream Factory have announced the extras that will be included in their Collector’s Edition of the film. We get a Clive Barker commentary, a behind-the-scenes featurette, some rare on-set footage, deleted scenes with Clive Barker commentary, and likely more. I’ve noticed that they usually undersell the bonus content on their discs, mostly due to space limitations, I would assume. This is shaping up to be a fantastic release, with a new transfer, and what looks to be a generous amount of extras. The release hits shelves on the 16th of December. You can pre-order a copy for yourself either on amazon, or the Shout!

After the departure of former CEO Mikael Modig, the company’s new management team includes Kim Beich as head of acquisitions and general operations; Henrik Rasmussen leading the home entertainment business: and Thor Sigurjonsson as head of production.
Scanbox has built up from a home entertainment-focused company that concentrated on genre fare to have a more diverse slate with top arthouse titles. Joni Sighvatsson, chairman of Scanbox for the past eight years, told Screen: “We have a much more diversified slate, but also we’re not abandoning our roots in genre.”

Another adaptation of a toothy young adult tale featuring vampires is headed our way courtesy of Palomar Pictures, and we've got all the details you can sink your teeth into right here. Two vampire puns in one sentence? We win the Internet!
According to Deadline, Palomar Pictures has acquired screen rights to Blood of Eden, a book series by young adult author Julie Kagawa. The series begins with "The Immortal Rules", which Harlequin Teen published this week.
“It’s simply a great story with an electrifying heroine,” said Palomar principal Joni Sighvatsson. “It makes the series an ideal subject for a film adaptation. Julie’s ability to familiarize the reader with this complex world in a few pages demonstrates the cinematic qualities of her imagination and complements my own sensibilities as a film producer.”

Exclusive: Palomar Pictures has acquired screen rights to Blood Of Eden, a book series by young adult author Julie Kagawa. The series begins with The Immortal Rules, which Harlequin Teen published this week. The Immortal Rules is set in the future world where humanity has been decimated by a deadly virus and exists primarily as a food source and slave class to vampires that run things. The first book revolves around a young girl who is turned into a vampire and has to choose between her dreams of overrunning the vampire overlords, or embracing the idea that she is now one of them. “It’s simply a great story with an electrifying heroine,” said Palomar principal Joni Sighvatsson. “It makes the series an ideal subject for a film adaptation. We’ll still have our Cullens, Eric Northman and the Salvatore brothers gracefully prowling across our screens for a bit longer, but I think it might soon be time for some, er, fresh blood in the vampire game. So does Hollywood, apparently. Palomar Pictures and Harlequin Teen announced today that a book that isn’t even out until next Tuesday, Julie Kagawa’s The Immortal Rules, has been optioned, along with the sequels that will follow it in the Blood of Eden series. The movie would be produced by Joni Sighvatsson, who has made a number of dark and twisty movies, such as Killer Elite, Brothers, Wild at Heart and Basquiat.
Part of the excitement for Immortal Rules stems from the immense popularity of Kagawa’s fairy series, The Iron Fey. The new novel takes place in a future when vampires rule the world and humans are kept like cattle to feed them.

The characters in Nicolas Winding Refn's films remind one of the famous tale of the scorpion and frog. They're trapped by compulsive behavior, often against their better natures. A small-time drug dealer in "Pusher" (1996), the director's breakthrough debut, seems to go further and further into debt the more he tries to pay back a brutal gangster. In "Pusher 3" (2005), that same brutal gangster, trying to find some normalcy in his middle age, is sucked into a whirlpool of harrowing violence.
