Miniseries “The Adrenalist” has been pre-sold to Denmark’s Dr and Iceland’s RÚV. Produced by True Content Production in Norway, and with TV2 already on board, it will be shot in Norway.
Currently casting, the show – budgeted at €10.5 million – is expected to gather “top star actors from the Nordic countries,” says producer Renée Hansen Mlodyszewski. “The Adrenalist” will mark a second miniseries for writer and director Pål Sletaune, also behind “22 July,” about the infamous terrorist attack in 2011.
Sletaune will once again refer to a true story, this time focusing on Arthur Omre: one of the most successful liquor smugglers in Norwegian history, later on transforming into a successful author. His gangster drama, set in Oslo in the 1920s during prohibition, “is a wild ride about the right man, at the right time, in the right place,” adds Hansen Mlodyszewski.

Norway’s Sara Johnsen has won the 2020 Nordisk Film & TV Fond Prize for her writing on Nrk’s “22 July,” a six-part painstaking – and often inevitably pained – reconstruction using fictional composite characters but often meticulously recreated scenes of how Norway reacted to its 2011 terror attacks.
The award, for outstanding screenwriting, was presented to Johnsen at a ceremony on Wednesday evening at the TV Drama Vision section of this week’s Göteborg Film Festival in Sweden. The kudos comes with a Nok 200,000 cash endowment.
Best known as the writer-director of award-winning feature films – “Kissed by Winter”, “Upperdog,” “All That Matters is Past” – Johnsen served as head writer on “22 July,” a series created for Norwegian pubcaster production arm Nrk Drama by Johnsen and Pål Sletaune and directed by Sletaune. It is distributed by the U.K.-based Drg, part of the Nordic Entertainment Group (Nent).

On Friday, July 22 2011, Anders Behring Breivik, a 32-year-old Norwegian, drove a white van from Skoyen to the Government quarter in Oslo, where he parked at 3.17 pm. In the van was a 2,100 pound home-made bomb, with a seven-minute fuse, whose explosion killed eight people. He then travelled to the island of Utoya, then hosting a camp of the Labour Party’s teen Workers’ Youth League, where he shot dead 77 campers, mostly teenagers. Some ran, swam or begged for their lives, others played dead.

Naboer (Next Door)
Screenplay by Pål Sletaune
Directed by Pål Sletaune
Denmark/Norway/Sweden, 2005
Twists appear to be quite the common topic in this column lately. This time out the issue isn’t an actual twist, but the fracturing of a psyche that gives the idea of a twist. There’s no twist to spoil in Naboer because such a twist never takes place. From the start Naboer is the tale of a man who has lost his grip with reality. The question isn’t of the twists to come, but the journey through the mind of a damaged individual.
Naboer starts off plainly enough, and such a start is key to the films effectiveness. Josh is a sympathetic figure in the beginning of the film, and he’s again a sympathetic figure in the final shot of Naboer. In between the beginning and the end we embark on a crazy journey with Josh.

*here be spoilers. Director/writer: Pål Sletaune. Cast: Noomi Rapace, Kristoffer Joner, Vetle Qvenild Werring, and Stig R. Amdam. The Monitor is a Norwegian film that released in the United States July 25th on DVD. In the United Kingdom, this film is called the gentler Babycall. The film itself is a strange tale of a woman recovering from family tragedy. This sums up the central plot. However, there is a strong sub-plot that acts much like a ghost story. Both tales come together through themes of abuse with the film's ending adding some initial confusion. The story centrally follows Noomi Rapace (Prometheus) as Anna. On the surface, she appears as a single mom protecting her son from an abusive father. She uses a baby monitor to eavesdrop on him. There is something more here, though. Without giving too much away, Anna is suffering from loneliness and something else. She reaches...

Director: Pal Sletaune. Review: Adam Wing. Swedish actress Noomi Rapace (Prometheus, Sherlock Holmes) is certainly getting around a bit these days, and despite a move to all things Hollywood, it was her captivating breakout in the ‘Millennium Series’ trilogy that people will remember her for. Two years after she made a permanent impression as Lisbeth Salander in The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest, Rapace took on the role of Anna, in Pål Sletaune’s Norwegian thriller, Babycall. Anna is a single mother given state protection following an abusive relationship. Terrified her ex will come back to find her and their son, Anders, she buys a baby monitor to keep track of him. In a scenario straight out of the latest Scandinavian horror movie, the monitor starts to pick up distressed noises from a child in another apartment and an innocent drawing by her son appears on the fridge stained with blood.

The Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists (U)
(Peter Lord, Jeff Newitt, 2012, UK/Us) Hugh Grant, Martin Freeman, David Tennant, Imelda Staunton. 88 mins
Aardman sets sail on seas of clay, in what feels more like an animated Blackadder than Pirates Of The Caribbean. Grant's inept rogue is good company, falling foul (or rather fowl) of Queen Victoria and Charles Darwin in a nonsensical, if inconsequential, romp that's lifted, as usual, by Aardman's eccentric details and fine craftsmanship.
Into The Abyss (12A)
(Werner Herzog, 2011, Us/UK/Ger) 107 mins
Herzog studies a Texas homicide from all angles, building less a polemic against the death penalty than a humane survey of death and loss.
This Is Not A Film (U)
(Mojtaba Mirtahmasb, Jafar Panahi, 2010, Ira) 75 mins
Panahi boldly defies his own house arrest by "not making" a film within his apartment, the confinement provoking a profound questioning of cinema itself.
Wrath Of The Titans (12A)

Noomi Rapace is wasted in this muddled thriller which can't deliver on its what's-that-on-the-baby-alarm? premise
An intriguing premise, and a potent performance from the original "girl with the dragon tattoo" are squandered in this disappointing, incoherent thriller from Norwegian director Pål Sletaune. Noomi Rapace is Anna, relocated by social services to an anonymous flat with her son to escape a violent husband. Nervy, traumatised Anna insists on buying an infants' listening device so that she can listen to her son sleeping in the next room. But then the Babycall starts picking up disturbing screams from another flat in the block. It's a great idea for a thriller – but then other plotlines get muddled in, and everything unravels into a cop-out. However Rapace, breathing shallowly and turning deathly pale, gives a brilliant impression of fear.

★★★★☆ Pål Sletaune's Norwegian horror/thriller Babycall (2011) may be one of the less-known of this week's new releases, yet features the superb star of the original The Girl With the Dragoon Tattoo film series and Ridley Scott's eagerly-awaited Prometheus (2012) Noomi Rapace. It's also a gripping story in it's own right, and you'll certainly be rewarded for tracking it down.

Anna (Noomi Rapace) and her son Anders (Vetle Qvenild Werring) are on the lamb from Anna’s abusive and meddlesome husband. Following a sketchy and clearly horrifying attack, both Anna and Anders are relocated to a remote housing estate in Norway. Clearly affected by what has happened, Anna struggles to adjust, and is encouraged to integrate herself and her son into a normal life by child services. Anna soon finds solace in the use of a baby monitor – facilitating a distance between mother and son during bedtime hours. However, this newfound comfort is short lived, as Anna finds that the baby monitor is picking up more than just the sounds of her son sleeping – someone or something is crying for help.

Swedish superstar Noomi Rapace is barely recognizable once she scrubs all that Lisbeth Salander Girl With The Dragon Tattoo stuff off.
Released in its home country of Norway last October and fresh off the Glasgow Film Festival last month, Norwegian director Pål Sletaune's Babycall centers on a young woman named Anna (Rapace) who moves into an apartment building with her eight year-old son to get away from her less-than-loving husband. Anna (Noomi Rapace) and her eight year old son, Anders (Velte Qvenild Werring), are moved to a modest apartment block on the outskirts of Oslo as part of the witness protection program. Scared to death by the violent past she’s escaped, Anna takes no risks with Anders, protecting him from all elements, even the draft.
As she starts to warm to her surroundings, she purchases a baby monitor from a friendly salesman, Helge (Kristoffer Joner), as a way of allowing Anders some breathing space while obeying Child Services’ strict rules. However, when she starts to hear disturbing noises through the monitor that aren’t coming from Anders, her paranoia resurfaces and it soon becomes apparent that all it not as clear-cut as it may seem.

Bella, Edward, and a vibrator. No, not all together; after all, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 is rated PG-13. It's just that the eclectic Rome Film Festival, currently being held in the Italian capital, has screened 15 minutes from Breaking Dawn: Part 1, in addition to Tanya Wexler's comedy about the invention of the vibrator, Hysteria, featuring Maggie Gyllenhaal and Hugh Dancy (photo). Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner were elsewhere, but Jackson Rathbone and Nikki Reed were in attendance at the Breaking Dawn screening. Also in attendance were Hysteria players Gyllenhaal and Rupert Everett. Hysteria is one of the 15 films in competition in Rome. Others include Pål Sletaune's Babycall, with Noomi Rapace and Kristoffer Joner; Fred Schepisi's The Eye of the Storm, with Geoffrey Rush and Charlotte Rampling; Cédric Kahn's Une vie meilleure, with Guillaume Canet and Leïla Bekhti; and Pawel Pawlikowski's La Femme du cinquième,...

What, exactly, is director Pål Sletaune’s Norwegian horror outing “Babycall” all about? Frankly, does it really matter? The film stars “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” siren Noomi Rapace, a woman I could watch in just about anything. However, seeing as how this is a movie news site and not a platform for my creepy crushes, we’ll just skip straight to the plot synopsis. A new trailer for Babycall, starring Noomi Rapace has popped up online. Ever since The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trilogy, Rapace has been highly sought after, and before making the leap to America in Sherlock Holmes 2 and Prometheus, she stuck around Sweden long enough to do a horror film…of sorts.
Anna and her 8-year old son, Anders, are on the run from Anders’ violent father. They move to a secret address in a giant apartment building. Anna is terrified that her ex-husband will find them and buys a babycall to make sure Anders is safe while he sleeps. But strange noises echoe in the babycall from elsewhere in the building. Anna overhears what she believes is the murder of a child. Meanwhile, Anders gets a mysterious, dark-haired friend who comes and goes a she wants. Does Anders’ friend know something about the sounds in the babycall? Why...

Here's the trailer for the new Norwegian thriller Babycall, directed by Pål Sletaune and starring The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo star Noomi Rapace. It's hard to get the gist of it from the trailer, and I'll give you the synopsis, but you should watch it first. Because it's moderately interesting, and then about two thirds of the way into it, it scared the bejesus out of me.
Via Twitch:
Rapace plays a woman essentially living in hiding with her young baby after getting out of an abusive relationship. Left scarred and timid by the relationship and basically praying not to be noticed by anyone for any reason her life is turned upside down when her baby monitor picks up signals from other apartments in her building, one signal in particular waking her with what seems to be the sound of someone being killed.
Yikes. It's clearly got a kind...

A few months back, we told you about Babycall, a new dark thriller from director Pål Sletaune (here). While the title and the director’s name doesn’t ring a bell to our American ears, the film stars Noomi Rapace from the international hit, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. And that certainly perked our ears up. Before we see her in the States in Sherlock Holmes 2, Twitchfilm has the teaser trailer for us interested in Rapace’s horror appearance.

What was it about the script that made you want to do the films?
Actually, I said yes before there was any script[s]. I read the books a couple of years before they even decided to do a film of it. So, when they asked me, I said yes right away.
When you read the books, did you ever imagine that you’d be Lisbeth?
Never – it was totally the opposite. I read in the paper that they were going to do a film of the first book and I was so upset because I was sure that they...

In the last few months, you really can’t go online without seeing what Noomi Rapace is doing next. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo star has been attached to the Alien prequels (here), she’s in Sherlock Holmes 2 (here), and a box biopic (here). Hell, why not add her to the growing actresses list for The Dark Knight Rises? Okay, I’m kidding.
But now she’s entering the horror genre in Babycall, a new thriller from director Pål Sletaune. I first came across Norway's Pål Sletaune in 2005 with the release of his third feature, Naboer. Released on these shores as Next Door, the film is a gripping, twisty, punishing psychosexual thriller that remains a huge favorite of mine and has left me waiting for whatever Sletaune may do next ever since. What he's doing is Babycall, a new thriller starring The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo's Noomi Rapace as young mother who believes she hears a murder through her child's baby monitor.
Though he's editing the film right now, Sletaune was good enough to answer a few of our questions via email.
