- American character actor of the 1940s and '50s, often in buffoonish roles. Best remembered as Dizzy in the Henry Aldrich series of films.
- Reliable character and bit-part actor whose earnest performances enhanced scores of films and TV episodes, notably Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942), A Guy Named Joe (1943) in which he played a very homesick soldier) and The Shop Around the Corner (1940).
- Played in two versions of the same story: "Rudy," the new messenger boy, in The Shop Around the Corner (1940), and a member of the barbershop quartet in the engagement party scene in the musical remake, In the Good Old Summertime (1949), nine years later.
