Writer-director Billy Wilder’s favorite and perhaps best movie takes the leap to 4K, revealing even more beauty in the images of Joseph Lashelle and the designs of Alexandre Trauner . . . we all feel like we’ve lived in C.C. Baxter’s New York flat. Wilder and I.A.L. Diamond’s ‘dirty fairy tale’ best expresses the difficulty of keeping both a job and one’s self-respect — fitting in a love life seems altogether too much to ask. It all comes down to Shirley MacLaine’s sweet smile and Jack Lemmon’s eagerness to be a ‘mensch’ — when he’s discovering that a moral compromise is like selling one’s soul.

Celebrating its 60th anniversary on October 3, “The Andy Griffith Show” is one of the most charming comedies in the history of American television. The CBS program was never outside of the top seven in TV ratings throughout its eight-year run and continues a strong six-decade domination in syndication.
Starting with the 1960 debut as a spinoff from “The Danny Thomas Show,” the series starred comedian Andy Griffith as Andy Taylor, sheriff of small-town Mayberry in North Carolina. One of the keys to the popularity was casting Don Knotts as bumbling but well-meaning deputy Barney Fife. Audiences got to know the young Ron Howard as Andy’s son Opie, long before his successful time on “Happy Days” and decades before his Oscar-winning career as a film director and producer.

Not every movie can play on the nostalgia factor for every generation, but no matter how old you are, there’s a good chance that you grew up with Winnie the Pooh in some form. The character created by A.A. Milne has endured for over 90 years as a beloved figure of children’s literature and television. And in that time, that silly old bear has been through a lot. Here, we look at the history of Pooh Bear across his many books and cartoons, all the way up to the live action “Christopher Robin.”
The first Winnie the Pooh story written by Alan Alexander Milne first appeared in the London Evening News in 1925 on Christmas Eve. The story, “The Wrong Sort of Bees,” would be the first chapter in the first volume of stories, “Winnie-the-Pooh,” published on October 14, 1926. We’ve got questions, and you’ve (maybe) got answers! With another week of TV gone by, we’re lobbing queries left and right about shows including Stranger Things, The Gifted, Supernatural and Will & Grace!
1 | Regarding the Stranger Things 2 finale, did anyone else chuckle at the parallel between its climactic sequence — involving heroes descending into a cave on a small elevator — and that of Netflix’s own The Defenders? Also, Dustin’s penchant for Dig Dug (in which creatures are confronted in maze-line tunnels) turned out to be a bit of foreshadowing, eh?

They might be known for projects like the Let’s Move! campaign and the Healthy Lunchtime Challenge—but on Halloween, First Lady Michelle Obama and President Barack Obama handed out a deliciously decadent gift to trick-or-treaters: Halloween sugar cookies.
On Monday, the White House grounds were transformed into A Storybook Journey, with different theme stations inspired by tales like Mother Goose, Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, The Wizard of Oz, and Peter Rabbit. As acrobats and Joy of Motion dancers dressed in fiery orange costumes performed on pedestals, the foodie First couple welcomed about 4,000 people—including local Washington, D.C.

President and Mrs. Obama welcomed trick-or-treaters to the White House for the last time on Monday, and you better believe they’re not leave-a-bowl-of-candy-on-the-porch types.
Thousands of visitors stopped by for a treat, and the historic structure received a fantastical new look for the occasion. Characters from famous children’s storybooks including Mother Goose, Peter Pan and The Wizard of Oz make appearances in the larger than life decor, but Alice in Wonderland steals the show. Forget Mother Goose. Bedtime stories just got a whole lot more fun with Jennifer Garner at the helm, after the actress delivered a wicked reading of the spoof children's book Go the F--- to Sleep. Full Frontal with Samantha Bee is off to a running start thanks to its whip-smart commentary on Jeb Bush and his wilting exclamation point, but let's not forget that Samantha Bee once gave us a formal lesson in rhetoric on Sesame Street -- in a stunning Mother Goose costume. In 2013, Bee appeared on Sesame Street as a rhyme-penning Mother Goose who'd come down with writer's block. Luckily some pals arrive to help her out in this preview clip. So keep in mind as Full Frontal rolls on that Samantha Bee is not just an authority on Daily Show-style punditry. She also knows a thing or two about Dr. Seuss literary tricks. As a side note, I love thinking of Mother Goose as an agitated Lillian Hellman type attempting to get her inspiration down on paper. ...

Pancho Moler (2005's Bad News Bears, American Horror Story: Freak Show) as Sick-Head. Jeff Daniel Phillips (The Lords of Salem, Halloween 2) as Roscoe, "the...

Shrouded in shadows, Doom-Head is featured in creepy fashion in the first still from Rob Zombie's 31. Also included in our latest round-up is a casting update for the second season of From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series and an exclusive excerpt from Doug Lavers’ sci-fi thriller, Rekindling of Hope.
Rob Zombie's 31: Played by Richard Brake, Doom-Head dominates the first official still from Rob Zombie's 31 (see below). Since the news broke earlier this month that Malcolm McDowell had joined the cast of 31 as Father Murder, more actors have joined the film's ranks:
Pancho Moler (2005's Bad News Bears, American Horror Story: Freak Show) plays Sick-Head. Jeff Daniel Phillips (The Lords of Salem, Halloween 2) portrays Roscoe, "the ass-kicking carney mechanic of Venus Virgo’s traveling show." Jane Carr (Curb Your Enthusiasm, How I Met Your Mother) plays Sister Serpent, "a wicked cross of Satan meets Mother Goose.

Today, Clive Barker’s wildly imaginative Nightbreed celebrates its 25th anniversary. While that is a remarkable feat in itself, the journey that the film has taken over the years has become the project’s enduring legacy within the horror genre. The recent Director’s Cut release of Nightbreed has been the ultimate vindication for Barker, who saw his vision snapped away decades ago from producers who believed they understood the world of Midian- and all its monsters- better than their creator.
Of course, that wasn’t the case, as Nightbreed received a disastrous response when it arrived in theaters, maligned mostly for its lack of subtlety and nuanced storytelling that was found within the pages of Barker’s original novella, Cabal. When Barker decided to move forward on adapting his work for the big screen, he was quick to rely on his some of his very closest friends to bring...

By far the most clamorous reception I encountered was at the home and studio of William Wegman, from his three Weimaraners — Candy, Bobbin, and Flo. Wegman is widely known for the photographs, films, and videos he stages of his gray-furred clan. This three-decade story began with Wegman’s legendary Man Ray. Fay Ray succeeded his reign in 1986, as later did her offspring, and theirs in turn. Flo, pictured here, arrived in March of 2011, and Topper in May, shortly after my visit. Appearances over the years have included The Tonight Show and Late Night With David Letterman, and Wegman has created film and video works for Saturday Night Live, Nickelodeon, and Sesame Street. Wegman has also produced a series of children’s books (including Little Red Riding Hood, Mother Goose, and Chip Wants a Dog) and many others for adult readership. “I was so excited to see that chair,” Wegman said...

The holidays are almost upon us, and if you just can't wait to re-watch seasonal classics like "White Christmas" or "The Muppet Christmas Carol," they're available right now on Netflix. There are also a few Thanksgiving-themed movies you can stream, our favorite being, of course, "Planes, Trains and Automobiles."
There's something for almost every taste, whether you want something nice like an animated film for the kids or something very naughty, like "Bad Santa."
Thanksgiving Movies

Nick Cannon stars as a young Marine who's just completed basic training and is about to ship out to Iraq: But first, he's home for a volatile four-day Thanksgiving with friends and family.

“So, shall we go to the dump?” Lois Lowry is now a slightly salty 77, with a sort of Elaine Stritch side-mouth speech and no Mother Goose orb about her. It’s a misty morning in late July, and I’m in Bridgton, Maine, watching the young-adult god as she separates cardboard boxes from newspapers and bottles, two days before she heads to Comic-Con, where she’s been roped into a panel with Jeff Bridges to promote the film adaptation of her 1993 classic The Giver—the start of a publicity tour, followed by a major movie release, which will make her dystopian novel, one of the most beloved books of the Ya “golden age,” a whole other kind of famous. Bridges, a lead producer, plays the supporting role of the title character; the movie also stars Meryl Streep and Taylor Swift. “There are those, I think, who are attracted to the...

If you were a kid in the 1980s and early 1990s and if you were into PC video games, one company you knew of was Sierra Entertainment. The video game publisher famous for its point-and-click adventures with a sense of humour.
The result were iconic game series and one-offs like "King's Quest," "Space Quest," "Police Quest," "Leisure Suit Larry," "Quest for Glory," "The Black Cauldron," "Mixed-Up Mother Goose," "Manhunter," "EcoQuest," "The Dagger of Amon Ra," "Castle of Dr. Brain" and many more.
By the late 1990s gamers moved on to different genres and publishers and a buyout essentially scuttled the company. Even so, there's still a lot of respect for the Sierra name which was absorbed into Activision back in 2008.
Now, the company label is being re-activated, with the first game to be a new chapter in the "King's Quest" franchise which will be worked on by The Odd Gentlemen,...

Last weekend at Comic-Con, I had a chance to interview Man of Action’s Steven T. Seagle and Duncan Rouleau, along with artist Jason Adam Katzenstein. Not only did we discuss their Sdcc-exclusive comic book, The Bus: A Camp Midnight Mini, but and I was able to learn about their involvement in Disney and Marvel’s Big Hero 6.
Daily Dead readers will really enjoy what you guys put together for The Bus: A Camp Midnight Mini comic book. How did this project come together?
Steven T. Seagle: I met Jason through a mutual friend, Daryl Sabara. With Comic-Con being so much about movies and TV shows, I thought it would be fun to have a comic at Comic-Con.
Can you tell our readers a little bit about this new story you’ve created?

Maleficent hits cinemas this Wednesday and we’ve got another one of our exclusive Ultimate Trivias “Maleficent” has classic appeal that derives from the Sleeping Beauty fable, which evolved—under different titles—over approximately 400 years. The early written origins of the story can be traced from the French novel “Perceforest” (author unknown) written in 1527. In 1697, “The Beauty Asleep in the Woods” was published by Charles Perrault in his book, “The Tales of Mother Goose.” He changed the villainess from a Queen to a wicked fairy and this version is the closest one to Disney’s interpretation. Perrault also introduced the element of a handsome Prince whose kiss could break the spell. The character Maleficent was a Disney creation first introduced in their 1959 animated feature “Sleeping Beauty,” which took 10 years to make and cost $6 million. It was the most expensive movie the studio had made to that point. “Maleficent” began production on June 11, 2012, at.

David Posamentier and Geoff Moore have been writing together for about ten years. Each has an impressive resume of films they’ve been a part of in some way. Posamentier worked for writer/director Zach Braff on Garden State. Moore has worked on such films as Confessions of a Dangerous Mind and I Love You Phillip Morris. Having worked so long writing and developing projects for others, it seemed inevitable that they would eventually decide to direct themselves. Which is precisely what they have done with the dark comedy Better Living Through Chemistry.
The film tells the story of small-town pharmacist Doug Varney (Sam Rockwell) who’s conventional and boring life is turned upside down when he meets the alluring Elizabeth Roberts (Olivia Wilde). As the pair begins a drug-fueled affair, Doug undergoes a transformation that may ultimately lead him down the path to a better life.

The man whose animated holiday TV specials have touched generations of fans died Thursday at his home in Bermuda. Arthur Rankin Jr was 89. His death was reported by local newspaper The Royal Gazette. With his partner Jules Bass, Rankin mined popular Christmas songs to create enduring stop-motion TV classics including Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964) — which beat The Voice and Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. in the 18-49 demo when CBS aired it Thanksgiving Eve last year – The Little Drummer Boy (1968), Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town (1970) and The Year Without A Santa Claus (1974). The Jimmy Durante-narrated Frosty The Snowman (1969) was done in tradition cel animation and was the first of their Christmas specials done as a half-hour rather than an hour. Rankin and Bass founded their company in 1960 as Videocraft International, and the name was changed to Rankin/Bass Productions eight years later. They also produced plenty of non-holiday fare as well,...

"Arrow" ended its fall episodes with "Three Ghosts," a rather incredible finale in which we learned the fates of Slade Wilson and Shado, saw Barry Allen become the Flash, watched a few deaths and even got a return visit from Tommy. This recap explains it all.
Superhero ER
With Oliver flat-lining on the table, only Barry can save our "Arrow" hero from certain destruction. And he does -- with rat poison. Hands up if you knew that was possible ... Anyone?
That's why Barry is going to be a superhero. He's knows this crazy stuff.
Anyway, with Barry's help, Oliver survives his coagulating-blood issue with no more side effects than a hallucination of Shado and some serious irritation that Barry knows the secret. It turns out that nearly dying makes Oliver Queen a wee bit testy with his associates. Poor Felicity even has to take the brunt of the verbal beating.

How I Met Your Mother Season 9, Episode 11 “Bedtime Stories”
Written by Carter Bays & Craig Thomas
Directed by Pamela Fryman
Airs Monday nights at 8pm Et on CBS
I’ve always had mixed feelings about ‘novelty’ episodes like “Bedtime Stories”: while they often give late-season episodes a nice injection of wit and energy, by construction they require a show to conform to different rules, both for creative types and audiences watching the final product. Novelty episodes can be quite enjoyable, but it’s a surface pleasure, one that comes from watching a show mold itself into something else – which, unfortunately, usually comes at the expense of character. “Bedtime Stories” is no different: it’s three-story Mother Goose structure works well in justifying the novelty of the episode, and there’s enough ingenuity in the rhyme construction – moving from the predictable iambic pentameter at times to dabble into other schemes, usually...

This is going to be a hard one to specifically review because it’s the kind of episode that doesn’t have much to offer in terms of story, but it gets by on simply being a clever piece of television. “Bedtime Stories” is How I Met Your Mother experimenting to find a new way to inject some fun into its aging formula. I might think Himym is aging quite well, but that doesn’t mean it couldn’t use some sprucing up now and then. What the show does in this case is take the entirety of the episode’s dialogue and put it to iambic heptameter. You’re going to laugh quite a bit, but not because of the usual jokes Himym tells. No, “Bedtime Stories” is funny in the way it takes classic tropes of the show and spinning them with rhyme. It’s a snazzy new...

We have a confession to make. We're exhausted by Lady Gaga's fashion antics. Every time we think the "Applause" singer has gone as far as she can go, she tops it leaving us to figure out how and why?? Case in point, this belated granny Halloween getup. The lavender suit is a Prabal Gurung design, but it looks like the pop star picked up her wig and bifocals at a shuttering costume shop. Hopefully they were 50% off like the rest of the October 31st gear. We'd typically try to understand why the "Dope" singer would wear such a thing. Is she honoring her own grandma or maybe channeling Mother Goose? Sometimes we compare her looks to the crazy couture that came before. Is it more or less insane...

Showtime’s drama pilot The Affair has added Joshua Jackson to the cast. The drama focuses on two married couples and an affair that creates turmoil between them. Jackson will play a long island cowboy whose wife starts an affair with a character played by Dominic West.
Too bad Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23 didn’t last long enough to get Joshua Jackson.
EW drops the terrible no-good news that Lynda Carter will appear as herself on an episode of Two and a Half Men. I’m telling myself that show probably won’t give Carter a scene to justify watching Two and a Half Men.
NBC lists 12 “Must See TV” Shows You Might Not Remember. I look at it as twelve reasons why NBC has been stuck at the bottom of the ratings.
I had so much hope for The Single Guy, at least until it debuted.

Duck Tales Remastered is out, and it is glorious perfection.
The original gameplay of the original Capcom Nes classic (largely considered the finest platformer on the system) is reproduced perfectly. Nothing has been “improved”, nor need it be.Yes, there are difficulty settings now, but if you want to reproduce the original in its infuriating awesomeness, it is there for you.
Note that I only said the gameplay had not been improved. The rest has been catapulted into the 21st century by spectacular game developers WayForward, makers of the Mighty Switch Force series, and also just reinvigorated Shantae. Why Watch? Well, don’t you want to know the truth about Mother Goose? This quirky 1957 Disney short film takes you behind the rhyme, explaining the origins of “Little Jack Horner,” “Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary” and “London Bridge Is Falling Down.” Sort of. The cartoon is somewhat more devoted to charm than accuracy, getting a few details entirely wrong. Yet if anything it makes The Truth About Mother Goose even more clever, retelling tall tales with the very loose sense of history that made them fun in the first place. Your second to reason to watch is Wolfgang Reitherman, who co-directed the short with Bill Justice. Today is Reitherman’s birthday, what would be his 104th. He was one of Disney’s “Nine Old Men,” the group of core animators that created most of the studios greatest early works. The Truth About Mother Goose was Reitherman’s first outing as a director. Special effects master on fantasy films including Jason and the Argonauts and Clash of the Titans
In 1933, the 13-year-old Ray Harryhausen saw King Kong at the cinema and was hooked – not only by Kong, who was clearly not just a man in a gorilla suit, but also by the dinosaurs. He came out of the theatre "stunned and haunted. They looked absolutely lifelike … I wanted to know how it was done." It was done by using stop-motion animation: jointed models filmed one frame at a time to simulate movement. Harryhausen, who has died aged 92, was to become the prime exponent of the technique and its combination with live action. He created the special effects for fantasy films such as The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad (1958); Jason and the Argonauts (1963), with its famous army of skeletons; and Clash of the Titans (1981).

Among the many primary functions of film music, tension is near the top of the list. Wether it’s to generate feelings of suspense, anticipation, or even a false sense of danger, creating tension is a major part of our work as film composers.
In this article I’ll discuss one of the tools you can add to your bag of tricks for creating tension, the technique of stretching out a scale.
Expectation
Tension is aroused when there is a conflict between what we expect to happen and what actually happens. In music one of the easiest ways to do this is to set up an expectation, but then delay it’s resolution.
I’m reminded of the scene from Who Framed Roger Rabbit in which the villain is trying to get Roger Rabbit to come out of his hiding place. He knocks out the rhythm to the first part...
