Yesterday, we shared the news that Encyclopocalypse Publications, the company that not only brought John Skipp and Craig Spector’s novelization of Fright Night and Jeff Rovin’s novelization of Re-Animator back into print, but have also commissioned new novelizations of older films like Scared to Death, Wishmaster, Vamp, Titan Find (a.k.a. Creature), and Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, is set to bring us a novelization of the 1989 Troma release Redneck Zombies. But that’s not the only novelization they currently have in the works. Encyclopocalypse Publications has also announced that they’ve got Snow Shark author Brian G. Berry working on a novelization of the 1986 low budget classic Nail Gun Massacre, while A Bouquet of Viscera author Bridgett Nelson is writing a novelization of the unnerving 2008 film Deadgirl!
Written and directed by Terry Lofton, Nail Gun Massacre told the following story: Forget about that guy with the chainsaw.

Encyclopocalypse Publications not only brought John Skipp and Craig Spector’s novelization of Fright Night and Jeff Rovin’s novelization of Re-Animator back into print, they’ve also been commissioning new novelizations of older films. Matt Serafini wrote a novelization of the 1980 sci-fi horror film Scared to Death, while Christian Francis wrote novelizations of 1997’s Wishmaster, 1986’s Vamp, and 1985’s Titan Find (a.k.a. Creature). On the more recent side, Bret Nelson wrote a novelization of 2011’s Manborg. A couple months ago, we heard that we’ll be getting a novelization of Attack of the Killer Tomatoes from Encyclopocalypse Publications and author Jeff Strand. And now it has been revealed that Encyclopocalypse Publications also has a novelization of the 1989 Troma release Redneck Zombies (watch it Here) in the works!

In late September, Encyclopocalypse unleashed Fright Night: Origins, a book touted as the definitive literary adaptation of Tom Holland’s 1985 comedy creature feature. Springing straight from the inkwell of Holland himself with some help from novelist A. Jack Ulrich, Origins is a (mostly) unabridged account of the events you remember from the original movie. It is the teen vampire comedy you know and love, but more of it– for better and for worse.
Conceived as a springboard for a new trilogy of novels, Fright Night: Origins is Tom Holland’s attempt to course correct the franchise after the creative and financial disappointments that were Fright Night Part 2 (1988), the 2011 remake, and the 2013 direct-to-video sequel. None of these efforts had Holland’s direct involvement, so one might imagine that bringing him back to the Fright Night fold would serve to avoid similar missteps. Unfortunately, Fright Night Origins suffers from many of the...

Mark Alan Miller and his creative team at Encyclopocalypse have been bringing horror books to life with compelling audio versions, and now the company is expanding with the launch of a publishing imprint for original content and movie novelizations, including Fright Night and Re-Animator:
Press Release: Los Angeles, CA- Saturn and Rondo award-winning producer and writer Mark Alan Miller, best known for Nightbreed: The Director's Cut and Boom! Studios’ Hellraiser comics, is adding a new title to his already expansive resume: publisher.
Miller announced this week that his company Encyclopocalypse, which specializes in audio adaptations of notable works of horror literature, will be expanding into publishing books itself under a new expansion that will encompass both paperback and e-books.
The move came about partially as a result of Encyclopcoalyse acquiring the audio rights to John Skipp and Craig Spector’s novelization of Fright Night, the classic 1985 horror comedy starring Roddy McDowell and Chris Sarandon.

[Originally appeared in the February 2015 issue of Deadly Magazine.] I had survived. There were hundreds more to come, but I had made it through that dreaded first one. Arriving home on a weekday afternoon after earning an “A” on my first college test, I was looking to celebrate. So what if I would have failed without the massive grading curve my professor threw out as a life preserver for the class? An “A” was an “A”, and with the rigid time structure of high school in the rearview mirror, I had the entire afternoon to celebrate my first higher education victory (if you could call it that). I knew exactly where to go for the proper party, a destination that didn’t even require getting off the couch: the “Free Movies” menu on Xfinity.
Recently, I had been steadily devouring episodes of Post Mortem with Mick Garris on Xfinity, but on that day I was looking to watch a horror film.

Like with any long-running slasher movie franchise, every horror fan has a favorite Nightmare on Elm Street sequel when asked. The most popular response is Dream Warriors, which, based on anecdotal evidence, many fans prefer even to the first film. Some like its follow-up, the Renny Harlin-directed The Dream Master, best. Very rarely, if ever, do Nightmare fans name the fifth installment, 1989’s The Dream Child, as their favorite. It’s the unloved orphan of the franchise, lacking even the novelty of Freddy’s Dead with its 3-D climax and the fact that it’s designed to end the series for good (even if Wes Craven’s New Nightmare would render said closure impotent just a few years later). For many, The Dream Child represents the franchise overstaying its welcome for one film too many before wrapping up. And, yes, the movie has its share of problems both in...

For years, he's brought the dead to life in books like Patient Zero and Rot & Ruin, so it's rather fitting that prolific author Jonathan Maberry has now teamed up with the legendary George A. Romero to co-edit an anthology set within the early stages of the zombie uprising in Night of the Living Dead. Titled Nights of the Living Dead, the new anthology is now available from St. Martin's Press (check out our giveaway here), and to celebrate, we caught up with Maberry for our latest Q&A feature to discuss his work on the living dead dream project, and we also have a claustrophobic excerpt from his short story "Lone Gunman."
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Jonathan. How did the opportunity come about to collaborate on a Night of the Living Dead anthology with the legend himself, George A. Romero?

Edited by Jonathan Maberry and Romero himself, a new anthology titled Nights of the Living Dead has been announced for a 2017 release and will follow other survivors in the world of Romero’s classic 1968 film.
Author Brian Keene (The Complex, The Rising) recently shared the news about the Nights of the Living Dead anthology on his website. Elizabeth Massie is a Bram Stoker Award-winning writer of short stories and novels, and she is also a humanitarian who has come up with some creative ways to give back. Elizabeth was gracious enough to take time out of her schedule to answer a few questions about the short story, "Abed," and her Hand to Hand Vision Fundraising work.
"Abed" has been called "one of the most disturbing horror stories ever written." What inspired you to write the story?
Necon is a fantastic horror convention in Rhode Island, a convention I attend as regularly as possible. One year, back in the early 1990s, John Skipp and Craig Spector were in attendance. Skipp had read some of my other works and invited me to submit a story to the second of the Book of the Dead (zombie) anthologies, Book of the Dead 2: Still Dead. He basically said, "Send us something that will blow our minds.

In his introduction to Psychos: Serial Killers, Depraved Madmen, and the Criminally Insane, the latest short story anthology from Black Dog & Leventhal - who have previously brought us collections entitled Zombies (2009), Werewolves and Shape Shifters (2010), and Demons (2011) - editor John Skipp hits us with the revelation that 'some people kill people', which is not only true, but in terms of this weighty new tome is also something of a gross understatement.
John Skipp, of course, needs no introduction to anybody familiar with horror literature. In collaboration with former partner in crime Craig Spector, Skipp penned half a dozen novels, reworked writer/director Tom Holland's script for the original (and superior in this writer's opinion) Fright Night (1985) movie into a novelization, and wrote the screenplay for A Nightmare On Elm Street 5: The Dream Child (1993). John Skipp is one of the innovators of contemporary horror. In 1986, his novel The Light at the End (with Craig Spector) hit the New York Times bestseller list, helped launch the splatterpunk movement, and inspired the character of Spike in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Their 1989 anthology Book of the Dead was the beginning of modern post-Romero zombie fiction. After their script for A Nightmare on Elm St. 5: The Dream Child was bastardized out of all recognition, the duo moved to Hollywood, wrote one more book (Animals), and promptly parted ways. Then Skipp disappeared from the scene. Over a decade later, Skipp returned with the solo collection Conscience, and has published 13 new titles since, including Spore (with...

Craig Spector is best known as an author and editor with eleven books under his belt (another on the way tentatively titled Turnaround) and millions of copies sold. His meteoric rise to fame in horror circles came mostly on the back of a series of novels that he co-wrote with John Skipp in the late 1980's. The two also edited a couple of zombie anthologies way before the zombie craze took hold (Book of the Dead - 1990 and Still Dead - 1992). That's right, they were zombie before zombie was cool. Along with some solo novels he has also collaborated with other authors since then, most recently with author Whitley Strieber on the graphic novel The Nye Incidents. Nye centers on a seen-it-all and logical medical examiner whose faith in the rational is shattered when she runs afoul of the brutal murder of a supposed alien abductee. The case puts her on the path chasing a serial killer working in the alien abductee community who may or may not be human.

[1] Way back in 2009, we reported on a couple of comic book adaptations in development: Lions, Tigers and Bears [2], about a boy whose stuffed animals come to life; and The Nye Incidents [3], based on a Devil's Due comic about an alien abductee serial killer. Neither project got much farther than the early stages, however, and we eventually forgot about them altogether. (Or at least I did. Maybe you didn't. I don't know your life.) Now, news comes that both projects are back on track again. Get updates on both, plus info on a potential Penny Arcade-inspired film, after the jump. When we first reported on Lions, Tigers and Bears, relative newcomer Joey Aucoin was set to write the script based on his pitch. A more recent report, however, announces Not Another Teen Movie scribes Adam Jay Epstein and Andrew Jacobson as the screenwriters. As before, Paramount's Lorenzo di Bonaventura is producing.

The comic, published by Devil's Due, was written by Whitley Strieber and Craig Spector. Read more about the film by clicking on he aforementioned link to our Lincoln interview.

There was a time when the name Leisure Books was synonymous with horror novels. When it came to mass market paperbacks, Leisure ruled the horror world. Authors like Ed Lee, Craig Spector, Brian Keene, Richard Laymon, Graham Masterton, Jack Ketchum, and even Stephen King have published with Leisure, which was owned by Dorchester Publishing.
Under other lines Dorchester publishes romance, thrillers, westerns - you name it. However, in 2009 things began to go sideways at Dorchester. Within months the company as it was known was gone: sales and editorial staff fired, reports of shipments to stores and authors delayed, creditors piling up along with unpaid royalties to authors.
In mid-2010 Brian Keene (pictured right; Ghoul, The Rising, Urban Gothic) forged a deal with the company for the return of all publishing rights to his work in return for the forgiveness of all money owed to him by Dorchester. This was the...

Let’s face it ... Technology is changing the landscape of how film, music, and literature are being presented to the marketplace. Netflix is doing the bulk of its business via streaming (either through its website or on various other consoles such as the Xbox 360 and the PS3). Services like Rhapsody and iTunes are making downloading music quick, easy, and affordable.

Seeking publication in today's advertisement saturated industry can be a bit like wandering into the zombie apocalypse: impossible odds, a sense of isolation, and at times it feels like everyone actually making it out there is in serious need of "braaaaaaaaaiiiiinssss."
It's an upstream swim without a doubt. But author Thom Carnell (who is a longtime contributor to both Fangoria Magazine and the Dread Central site as well as a once upon a time co-creator and writer for the much revered Carpe Noctem Magazine) is tackling both at the same time with his first novel, No Flesh Shall Be Spared (review here). Fueled by zombie-bashing carnage, the novel was released in time for Halloween of 2010.

Back in the mid-80s, horror fiction had become more than a little complacent. In most people’s minds, what passed for cutting edge genre fiction was the work of word generators such as Stephen King, Dean Koontz, or Anne Rice. It was all spooky kids, rabid pets, daddy issues, and whiny, homo-erotic vampires.
By and large that was fine, but it is important to remember that the punk music scene had landed with both feet on the next of the public zeitgeist and stories of such archetypical monsters and mayhem didn't resonate with readers like they once did. The public had a new attitude and wanted a new breed of monsters to go with it...ones that better fit in line with their new nihilistic outlook.

Animals
Stars: Marc Blucas, Nicki Aycox, Eva Amurri, Naveen Andrews | Written by Craig Spector | Directed by Douglas Aarniokoski
Despite the fact it came on a shiny disc, was made in 2008 and stars actors from cult TV shows, I have to wonder if perhaps Animals fell through a hole in space/time from the late 80s early 90s and would perhaps feel more comfortable in a nice black Ex-Rental VHS box.
Jarrett (Blucas) has a blue collar job in a run down town. His boss is a jerk, he lives in a trailer, his car is falling apart, life pretty much sucks. His only refuge is the local bar run by his best friend, who idolises him, and a waitress who has a crush on him. Enter Nora (Aycox), a bad girl who comes into the bar one night. We can tell she’s a bad girl because she dresses like Madonna circa 1985, smokes,...

Chelsea Films have announced the UK DVD release of Animals, based on the best-selling 1992 novel by John Skipp and Craig Spector – who co-scripted A Nightmare On Elm Street 5: The Dream Child and are regarded by many as key pioneers of the late-1980s literary splatterpunk movement.
Directed by Douglas Aarniokoski (Highlander: Endgame) from a script adapted by Spector and starring Marc Blucas (Buffy The Vampire Slayer), Naveen Andrews (Lost), Nicki Aycox (Supernatural) and Eva Amurri (Californication), this graphically violent and boldly erotic reinvention of the werewolf/shapeshifter mythos will certainly appeal to horror fans who prefer the mature content of True Blood to the toothless, juvenile shenanigans of the Twilight saga.
Ever since his dreams of a promising football career were shattered by an unexpected injury in college, one-time local hero Jarrett (Blucas) has spent the subsequent years wasting away in his rapidly dying hometown working days in a variety of dead-end,...

Dread Central recently caught up with writer/director John Skipp during the Never Sleep Again event this past weekend and talked to him about his brand new project he has coming up, Rose. The creator describes the project as "a freaky shot-in-3D feature with a radically whacked-out approach to the undead. Call it Pee Wee’s Playhouse meets Night of the Living Dead".
Skipp went on to say, “Rose is a super-hot, hilarious ex-mental patient with a cable access puppet show in downtown La. But now it’s 48 hours into the zombie apocalypse so she’s running rescue stations and musical numbers round the clock, trying to keep people’s hope alive…and periodically pausing to pulverize the skulls of the zombies trying to bust down her door.”
The movie introduces sexy newcomer Chase McKenna as the machete-juggling, shotgun-toting, corset-sporting gonzo comedienne with a secret that just might save the world.

Winter has dropped its frozen shawl and released us from its icy grip. The sun is sitting higher in the sky, birds are singing and plants are blooming. What better time to sit out in the warm sun with a new horror novel from Dorchester Publishing.
May’s offerings are sure to entertain and terrify, with a brand new book by one of my favorite new authors Nate Kenyon and a classic by the formidable duo of John Skipp and Cody Specter.
“They were just a group of high school kids looking for a place to party. They didn’t know the end of the world was coming. Now, alone and trapped below ground in a state-of-the-art bomb shelter, they are being stalked—and the creatures that come for them through the dirt and ash are like nothing anyone has ever seen before.

Aliens of the black-eyed, sinewy variety have lost their edge. "The visitors, the image of the Grays have been ruined by pop culture," balks Todd Lincoln. "Every day they're on t-shirts, skateboard decks and mudflaps." He hopes to turn that all around when he directs and produces The Nye Incidents , a feature film adaptation of Devil's Due Publishing, Whitley Strieber ("The Hunger," "Wolfen") and Craig Spector's graphic novel that was set up last month at Dark Castle and Warner Bros.' horror outfit which produced House on Haunted Hill , Gothika and House of Wax . Lincoln, who has been attached to another Devil's Due property Hack/Slash , claimed dibs on the "Nye" film rights the minute Devil's Due founder Josh Blaylock...

An up-and-coming director we've been aching to see get behind the camera is Todd Lincoln, who was once attached to The Fly and is working on the forthcoming Hack/Slash. Now the young director is teaming up with Dark Castle to write and direct a new haunted house tale, The Apparition, for Joel Silver's genre label. Read all about it inside. Unfortunately, full details of the project, an original idea developed by Lincoln, Dark Castle exec Alex Heineman and producer Daniel Alter, is being kept under wraps, but the plot is said to be based on true events. Variety reports that Dark Castle Films has picked up the rights to the Devil’s Due graphic novel The Nye Incidents. The comic, about a medical examiner looking into the murders of alien abductees, was created by Whitley Strieber (a specialist in the subject with such books as Communion and Transformation) and written by horror novelist Craig Spector.
Attached to direct the film, which will be released by Warner Bros., is Todd Lincoln, who’s also set to direct another Devil’s Due adaptation, Hack/Slash, for Rogue Pictures. The producers are Dark Castle’s Joel Silver, Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman, along with Lincoln and Daniel Alter, who’s also involved with Hack/Slash and yet another Devil’s Due flick, Lost Squad, for Rogue. It's been a while since Whitley Strieber's name has popped up on the horror cinema scene. The author, best known for his alien abduction novel "Communion" (which was adapted into a film with Christopher Walken), also penned the story upon which the feature film Wolfen was based on.
