Ramona Fradon, a comics artist for more than 70 years, has died at 97. She retired just last month. Fradon’s death was shared by Catskill Comics, a comic book art dealer, on Facebook.
She began her career in 1950, beginning to work for DC Comics early on. She’s best known as an artist on “Aquaman” and cocreator of the superhero Metamorpho, set to be played by “Barry” actor Anthony Carrigan in James Gunn’s forthcoming “Superman: Legacy” next year.
Catskill Comics posted, “It comes with great sadness to announced that Ramona Fradon has passed away a few moments ago. Ramona was 97 and had a long career in the comic book industry and was still drawing just a few days ago.”
“She was a remarkable person in so many ways. I will miss all the great conversations and laughs we had. I am blessed that I was able to work with her on a professional level,...

“American Idol” may be a platform for aspiring unknown singers to showcase their talent outside of their bedrooms, but some contestants may have an advantage over others: being born into famous families.
Season 21 has already shown several so-called “Nepo Babies” — contestants with ties to the entertainment business — competing for the crown, including Kaya Stewart, daughter of Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics (pictured).
“With all your different opportunities and connections and stuff, how did you even land on ‘American Idol?’” Judge Katy Perry asked before her audition.
It’s a fair question, but “nepo babies” competing on “American Idol” is nothing new. In the past, the offspring of parents with varying backgrounds from music, acting, sports, and politics have all found their way in front of the judges.
Actor Jim Carrey’s daughter, Jane, earned a golden ticket in season 11; Aretha Franklin’s granddaughter, Grace, auditioned last season; and Lara Johnston,...

Paul Mason, the screenwriter, producer and studio executive who penned episodes of Ben Casey, Ironside and CHiPs, created The Bold Ones: The New Doctors with Steven Bochco and served as president of Viacom Pictures, has died. He was 92.

A business magazine recently featured a story about the astoundingly short average life span of today’s companies, brands and product leaders. They noted that the average life expectancy of a modern company is something like 15 years. I think about a brand like PalmPilot, where one of my college buddies made a fortune, and how that name is practically a trivia question for this year’s Mba graduates. (“Is it a helicopter operator in Palm Beach?”) Likewise, cool companies they want to work for include Google and Lululemon – brands that didn’t exist 15 years ago.
So with all that in mind, let’s explore the opposite: the challenges of working with an 80-year-old brand in such a fickle climate.
Created in 1936, Lee Falk’s The Phantom was the first costumed comic hero. Bridging the gap of the masked vigilantes of the pulps (The Shadow, The Spider, etc.) and comic book superheroes,...

I may not have grown up under the Common Core Standards, but I know enough math to figure out the following simple equation:
There are six weeks left of American Idol‘s Season 15. There are seven weeks left of Kelly Clarkson’s pregnancy. If Fox and 19 Entertainment spring for a luxury Rv to transport the original Idol winner to and from Hollywood every Thursday between now and the April 7 finale, there is no reason whatsoever she can’t upgrade this rollercoaster of a Farewell Season with her sweetly rambling, stream-of-consciousness, heartfelt and honest critiques. (And the occasional emotionally devastating performance.

This week, the Farewell Season Audition Experience rolls into Philadelphia for a blessedly short one-hour episode. American Idol, particularly in the early going, should never last more than one hour.We start strong: Our first hopeful is 15-year-old Gianna Isabella, who is talented and adorable and turns out to be the daughter of Brenda K. Starr, freestyle star of the late 1980s. You may remember Starr for three reasons: Her 1988 signature hit single "I Still Believe" She employed Mariah Carey as a backup singer Whatever she did to Mariah Carey that led her to swipe "I Still Believe," making it so popular that most people now remember Brenda K. Starr's signature 1988 hit single as a Mariah Carey song. And now we're left to wonder what she did to everyone, because her daughter's best shot at a career in the music industry is through an American Idol audition. Gianna does...

Washington, November 16: To make the dream of a leukemia patient come true, San Francisco was transformed into Gotham, while the 5-year-old acted as Batman.
The 'Make-a-Wish Foundation' catered to Miles Scott's dream to be Batman for a day, which saw thousands of people on the streets to cheer him up and even President Obama issued his first Vine on Twitter congratulating him, ABC News reported.
Scott's day began with a special edition cover of the San Francisco Chronicle, whose entire front page was dedicated to him with the headline for the lead story, written by Clark Kent, read 'Batkid Saves City'.
The other front-page stories about Batkid were written by Lois Lane, Brenda Starr and Perry White.

Long-time Dick Tracy aficionado Joe Staton will be taking the classic Dick Tracy newspaper strip following the retirement of long-time artist Dick Locher after March 13.
That’s the right man for the job. Of course, this writer made that suggestion to the newspaper syndicate 27 years ago. Joe should be admired for his patience as well as his craft.
Staton is well-known for his work on such comics characters as Superman, Spider-Man, E-Man, Green Lantern, the Justice Society, The Avengers, The Hulk, The Huntress, Scooby-Doo, Plastic Man … well, you get the point.
What this means is, unlike Brenda Starr and Little Orphan Annie, Tribune Media Services is not canceling Dick Tracy – contrary to rumor.
Joe will be joined by writer Mike Curtis.

First it was Annie. Then Cathy. Now ... Brenda? Brenda Starr -- star of the eponymous comic strip that’s chronicled the life of a ginger-haired, grid-skipping reporter for more than seven decades -- is about to disappear. Tribune Media Services announced on Thursday that the strip -- which at one time appeared in more than 250 newspapers, now just three dozen -- will make its final appearance in print on January 2. Starr’s demise follows on the heels of “Cathy” and “Annie,” both of whom met a similar fate earlier this year. Mary Schmich,...

What ode to class and elegance is complete without a music video featuring an unrecognizably airbrushed reality star and a horde of men spread out at her feet? Not Countess LuAnn de Lesseps new clip for her dubious single "Money Can't Buy You Class." That's for sure. In it, she's been digitally transformed into an expressionless hybrid of Eva Longoria and, like, old Brenda Starr cartoons. Judging by the level of visual marvel here, this must be the work of John Landis. Hype Williams, I mean? One of those. In the meantime, watch the video and keep chivalry alive after the jump.

Buck Rogers In The 25Th Century, the first science fiction comic strip, hit the newspapers in 1929, finally ending its long run in 1967. Writer Phil Nowlan created the character in two Sf pulp stories (published in Amazing Stories) before teaming with artist Dick Calkins on the spin-off strip. Buck Rogers is a former Air Force officer who falls into suspended animation while investigating a strange gas in a mineshaft. He awakens 500 years later to an America that has been conquered by Monguls. Buck meets Wilma Deering, who recruits him to fight the invaders; Dr. Huer, a brilliant scientist who will soon have Buck rocketing to other planets; and Wilma’s brother Buddy. Sometime space pirate “Killer” Kane became Buck’s primary nemesis along with Kane’s sultry assistant Ardala Valmar. No sooner has Buck vanquished the invaders than he, and the Earth, are confronted by the menace of the Tiger Men from Mars.
